Source text - English THE PSYCHOPATH TEST JON RONSON A Journey Through the Madness Industry Chapter 1 THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED This is a story about madness. It begins with a curious encounter at a Costa Coffee shop in Bloomsbury, Central London. It was the Costa where the neurologists tended to go, the University College London School of Neurology being just around the corner. And here was one now, turning onto Southampton Row, waving a little self-consciously at me. Her name was Deborah Talmi. She looked like someone who spent her days in laboratories and wasn’t used to peculiar rendezvous with journalists in cafes and fi nding herself at the heart of baffl ing mysteries. She had brought someone with her. He was a tall, unshaven, academic-looking young man. They sat down. ‘I’m Deborah,’ she said. ‘I’m Jon,’ I said. ‘I’m James,’ he said. ‘So,’ I asked. ‘Did you bring it?’ THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 2 Deborah nodded. She silently slid a package across the table. I opened it and turned it over in my hands. ‘It’s quite beautiful,’ I said. Last July, Deborah received a strange package in the mail. It was waiting for her in her pigeonhole. It was postmarked Gothenburg, Sweden. Someone had written on the padded envelope Will tell you more when I return! But whoever had sent it didn’t leave their name. The package contained a book. It was only forty-two pages long, twenty-one of which – every other page – were completely blank, but everything about it, the paper, the illustrations, the typeface, looked very expensively produced. The cover was a delicate, eerie picture of two disembodied hands drawing each other. Deborah recognized it as a reproduction of M. C. Escher’s Drawing Hands. The author was a ‘Joe K’ (a reference to Kafka’s Joseph K, maybe, or an anagram of ‘joke’?) and the title was Being or Nothingness, which was some kind of allusion to Sartre’s 1943 essay, Being and Nothingness. Someone had carefully cut out with scissors the page that would have listed the publishing and copyright details, the ISBN number, etc., so there were no clues there. A sticker read, ‘Warning! Please study the letter to Professor Hofstadter before you read the book. Good Luck!’ Deborah leafed through it. It was obviously some kind of a puzzle waiting to be solved, with cryptic verse and pages where words had been cut out, and so on. She looked again at the Will tell you more when I return! One of her colleagues was visiting Sweden, and so even though he wasn’t normally the sort of person to send out 3 THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED mysterious packages, the most logical explanation was that it had come from him. But then he returned, and she asked him, and he said he didn’t know anything about it. Deborah was intrigued. She went on the Internet. And it was then she discovered she wasn’t alone. ‘Were the recipients all neurologists?’ I asked her. ‘No,’ she said. ‘Many were neurologists. But one was an astrophysicist from Tibet. Another was a religious scholar from Iran.’ ‘They were all academics,’ said James. They had all received the package the exact same way Deborah had – in a padded envelope from Gothenburg upon which was written Will tell you more when I return! They had gathered on blogs and message-boards and were trying to crack the code. Maybe, suggested one recipient, the book should be read as a Christian allegory, ‘even from the enigmatic Will tell you more when I return! (Clearly a reference to the Second Coming of Jesus.) The author/authors seem to be contradicting Sartre´s atheist “Being AND Nothingness” (not B OR N).’ A researcher in perceptual psychology called Sarah Allred agreed: ‘I have a vague suspicion this is going to end up being some viral marketing / advertising ploy by some sort of religious organization in which academics / intellectuals / scientists / philosophers will come off looking foolish.’ To others this seemed unlikely: ‘The expensiveness factor rules out the viral theory unless the campaign is THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 4 counting on their carefully-selected targets to ponder about the mysterious book online.’ Most of the recipients believed the answer lay, intriguingly, with them. They had been hand-picked to receive the package. There was clearly a pattern at work, but what was it? Had they all attended the same conference together years ago or something? Maybe they were being headhunted for a top position in some secretive business? ‘First one to crack the code gets the job so to speak?’ wrote one Australian recipient. What seemed obvious was that a brilliant person or organization with ties to Gothenburg had devised a puzzle so complex that even clever academics like them couldn’t decipher it. Perhaps it couldn’t be decoded because the code was incomplete. Maybe there was a missing piece. Someone suggested ‘holding the letter closely over a lamp or try the iodine vapor test on it. There may be some secret writing on it in another type of ink.’ But there didn’t turn out to be any secret writing. They threw up their hands in defeat. If this was a puzzle that academics couldn’t solve, maybe they should bring in someone more brutish, like a private investigator or a journalist. Deborah asked around. Which reporter might be tenacious and intrigued enough to engage with the mystery? They went through a few names. And then Deborah’s friend James said, ‘What about Jon Ronson?’ On the day I received Deborah’s email inviting me to the Costa Coffee I was in the midst of quite a bad anxiety 5 attack. I had been interviewing a man named Dave McKay. He was the charismatic leader of a small Australian religious group called the Jesus Christians and had recently suggested to his members that they each donate their spare kidney to a stranger. Dave and I had got on pretty well at fi rst – he’d seemed engagingly eccentric and I was consequently gathering good material for my story, enjoyably nutty quotes from him, etc. – but when I proposed that group pressure, emanating from Dave, was perhaps the reason why some of his more vulnerable members might be choosing to give up a kidney, he exploded. He sent me a message saying that to teach me a lesson he was putting the brakes on an imminent kidney donation. He would let the recipient die and her death would be on my conscience. I was horrifi ed for the recipient and also quite pleased that Dave had sent me such a mad message that would be good for my story. I told a journalist that he seemed quite psychopathic (I didn’t know a thing about psychopaths but I assumed that that was the sort of thing they might do). The journalist printed the quote. A few days later Dave emailed me: ‘I consider it defamatory to state that I am a psychopath. I have sought legal advice. I have been told that I have a strong case against you. Your malice toward me does not allow you to defame me.’ This was what I was massively panicking about on the day Deborah’s email to me arrived in my inbox. ‘What was I thinking?’ I said to my wife, Elaine. ‘I was just enjoying being interviewed. I was just enjoying THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 6 talking. And now it’s all fucked. Dave McKay is going to sue me.’ ‘What’s happening?’ yelled my son, Joel, entering the room. ‘Why is everyone shouting?’ ‘I made a silly mistake, I called a man a psychopath, and now he’s angry,’ I explained. ‘What’s he going to do to us?’ said Joel. There was a short silence. ‘Nothing,’ I said. ‘But if he’s not going to do anything to us why are you worried?’ said Joel. ‘I’m just worried that I’ve made him angry,’ I said. ‘I don’t like to make people upset or angry. That’s why I’m sad.’ ‘You’re lying,’ said Joel, narrowing his eyes. ‘I know you don’t mind making people angry or upset. What is it that you aren’t telling me?’ ‘I’ve told you everything,’ I said. ‘Is he going to attack us?’ said Joel. ‘No!’ I said. ‘No, no! That defi nitely won’t happen!’ ‘Are we in danger?’ yelled Joel. ‘He’s not going to attack us,’ I yelled. ‘He’s just going to sue us. He just wants to take away my money.’ ‘Oh God,’ said Joel. I sent Dave an email apologizing for calling him psychopathic. ‘Thank you, Jon,’ he replied right away. ‘My respect for you has risen considerably. Hopefully if we should ever meet again we can do so as something a little closer to what might be called friends.’ 7 ‘And so,’ I thought, ‘there was me once again worrying about nothing.’ I checked my unread emails and found the one from Deborah Talmi. She said she and many other academics around the world had received a mysterious package in the mail. She’d heard from a friend who had read my books that I was the sort of journalist who might enjoy odd whodunits. She ended with, ‘I hope I’ve conveyed to you the sense of weirdness that I feel about the whole thing, and how alluring this story is. It’s like an adventure story, or an alternative reality game, and we’re all pawns in it. By sending it to researchers, they have invoked the researcher in me, but I’ve failed to fi nd the answer. I hope very much that you’ll take it up.’ Now, in the Costa Coffee, she glanced over at the book, which I was turning over in my hands. ‘In essence,’ she said, ‘someone is trying to capture specifi c academics’ attention to something in a very mysterious way and I’m curious to know why. I think it’s too much of an elaborate campaign for it to be just a private individual. The book is trying to tell us something. But I don’t know what. I would love to know who sent it to me, and why, but I have no investigative talents.’ ‘Well . . .’ I said. I fell silent and gravely examined the book. I sipped my coffee. ‘I’ll give it a try,’ I said. • • • THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 8 I told Deborah and James that I’d like to begin my investigation by looking around their workplaces. I said I was keen to see the pigeonhole where Deborah had fi rst discovered the package. They covertly shared a glance to say, ‘That’s an odd place to start but who dares to second guess the ways of the great detectives.’ Their glance may not, actually, have said that. It might instead have said, ‘Jon’s investigation could not benefi t in any serious way from a tour of our offi ces and it’s slightly strange that he wants to do it. Let’s hope we haven’t picked the wrong journalist. Let’s hope he isn’t some kind of a weirdo, or has a private agenda for wanting to see inside our buildings.’ If their glance did say that they would have been correct: I did have a private agenda for wanting to see inside their buildings. James’s department was a crushingly unattractive concrete slab just off Russell Square, the University College London School of Psychology. Fading photographs on the corridor walls from the 1960s and 1970s showed children strapped to frightening-looking machines, wires dangling from their heads. They smiled at the camera in uncomprehending excitement as if they were at the beach. A stab had clearly once been made at de-uglifying these public spaces by painting a corridor a jaunty yellow. This was because, it turned out, babies come here to have their brains tested and someone thought the yellow might calm them. But I couldn’t see how. Such was the oppressive ugliness of this building it would have been 9 like sticking a red nose on a cadaver and calling it Ronald McDonald. I glanced into offi ces. In each a neurologist or psychologist was hunkered down over their desk, concentrating hard on something brain-related. In one room, I learnt, the fi eld of interest was a man from Wales who could recognize all his sheep as individuals but couldn’t recognize human faces, not even his wife, not even himself in the mirror. The condition is called prosopagnosia – face-blindness. Sufferers are apparently forever inadvertently insulting their workmates and neighbours and husbands and wives by not smiling back at them when they pass them on the street, and so on. People can’t help taking offence even if they know the rudeness is the fault of the disorder and not haughtiness. Bad feelings can spread. In another offi ce a neurologist was studying the July 1996 case of a doctor, a former RAF pilot, who fl ew over a fi eld in broad daylight, turned around, fl ew back over it fi fteen minutes later, and there, suddenly, was a vast crop circle. It was as if it had just materialized. It covered ten acres and consisted of a hundred and fi fty-one separate circles. The circle, dubbed the Julia Set, became the most celebrated in crop-circle history. T-shirts and posters were printed. Conventions were organized. The movement had been dying off – it had become increasingly obvious that crop circles were built not by extra-terrestrials but by conceptual artists in the dead of night using planks of wood and string – but this one had appeared from nowhere in the fi fteen-minute gap between the pilot’s two journeys over the fi eld. THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 10 The neurologist in this room was trying to work out why the pilot’s brain had failed to spot the circle the fi rst time around. It had been there all along, having been built the previous night by a group of conceptual artists known as Team Satan using planks of wood and string. In a third offi ce I saw a woman with a Little Miss Brainy book on her shelf. She seemed cheerful and breezy and good-looking. ‘Who’s that?’ I asked James. ‘Essi Viding,’ he said. ‘What does she study?’ I asked. ‘Psychopaths,’ said James. I peered in at Essi. She spotted us, smiled and waved. ‘That must be dangerous,’ I said. ‘I heard a story about her once,’ said James. ‘She was interviewing a psychopath. She showed him a picture of The Julia Set crop circle. 11 a frightened face and asked him to identify the emotion. He said he didn’t know what the emotion was but it was the face people pulled just before he killed them.’ I continued down the corridor. Then I stopped and glanced back at Essi Viding. I’d never really thought much about psychopaths before that moment and I wondered if I should try and meet some. It seemed extraordinary that there were people out there whose neurological condition, according to James’s story, made them so terrifying, like a wholly malevolent space creature from a sci-fi movie. I vaguely remembered hearing psychologists say there was a preponderance of psychopaths at the top, in the corporate and political worlds – a clinical absence of empathy being a benefi t in those environments. Could that really be true? Essi waved at me again. And I decided, no, it would be a mistake to start meddling in the world of psychopaths, an especially big mistake for someone like me who suffers from a surfeit of anxiety. I waved back and continued down the corridor. Deborah’s building, the University College London Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, was just around the corner on Queen Square. It was more modern and equipped with Faraday cages and fMRI scanners operated by geeky-looking technicians wearing comic-book T-shirts. Their nerdy demeanours made the machines seem less intimidating. ‘Our goal,’ said the Centre’s website, ‘is to understand how thought and perception arise from brain THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 12 activity, and how such processes break down in neurological and psychiatric disease.’ We reached Deborah’s pigeonhole. I scrutinized it. ‘OK,’ I said. ‘Right.’ I stood nodding for a moment. Deborah nodded back. We looked at each other. Now was surely the time to reveal to her my secret agenda for wanting to get inside their buildings. It was that my anxiety levels had gone through the roof those past months. It wasn’t normal. Normal people defi nitely didn’t feel this panicky. Normal people defi nitely didn’t feel like they were being electrocuted from the inside by an unborn child armed with a miniature taser, that they were being prodded by a wire emitting the kind of electrical charge that stops cattle from going into the next fi eld. And so my plan all day, ever since the Costa Coffee, had been to steer the conversation to the subject of my over-anxious brain and maybe Deborah would offer to put me in an fMRI scanner or something. But she’d seemed so delighted that I’d agreed to solve the Being or Nothingness mystery I hadn’t so far had the heart to mention my fl aw, lest it spoiled the mystique. Now was my last chance. Deborah saw me staring at her, poised to say something important. ‘Yes?’ she said. There was a short silence. I looked at her. ‘I’ll let you know how I get on,’ I said. The 6 a.m. discount Ryanair fl ight to Gothenburg was packed and claustrophobic and cramped. I tried to reach 13 down into my trouser pocket to retrieve my notepad so I could write a to-do list, but my leg was impossibly wedged underneath the tray table that was piled high with the remainder of my snack-pack breakfast. I needed to plan for Gothenburg. I really could have done with my notepad. My memory isn’t what it used to be. Quite frequently these days, in fact, I set off from my home with an excited, purposeful expression and after a while I slow to a stop and just stand there looking puzzled. In moments like that everything becomes dreamlike and muddled. My memory will probably go altogether one day, just like my father’s has, and there will be no books to write then. I really need to accumulate a nest egg. I tried to reach down to scratch my foot. I couldn’t. It was trapped. It was fucking trapped. It was fucking . . . ‘YEAL!’ I involuntarily yelled. My leg shot upwards, hitting the tray table. The passenger next to me gave me a startled look. I had just let out an unintentional shriek. I stared straight ahead, looking shocked but also slightly awed. I didn’t realize that such mysterious, crazy noises existed within me. I had a lead in Gothenburg, the name and business address of a man who might know the identity or identities of ‘Joe K’. His name was Petter Nordlund. Although none of the packages sent to the academics contained any leads – no names of possible authors or distributors – somewhere, buried deep within the archive of a Swedish library, I had found ‘Petter Nordlund’ referenced as the English translator of Being or Nothingness. THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 14 A Google search revealed nothing more about him, only the address of a Gothenburg company called BIR he was somehow involved in. If, as the book’s recipients suspected, a team of clever puzzle-makers was behind this expensive, enigmatic campaign for reasons not yet established (religious propaganda? Viral marketing? Headhunting?), Petter Nordlund was my only way in. But he didn’t know I was coming. I’d been afraid he’d go to ground if he did. Or maybe he’d tip off whichever shadowy organization was behind Being or Nothingness. Maybe they’d try to stop me in some way I couldn’t quite visualize. Whatever, I determined that doorstepping Petter Nordlund was the shrewdest course of action. It was a gamble. The whole journey was a gamble. Translators often work at a great distance from their clients and Petter Nordlund might well have known nothing at all. Some recipients had suggested that Being or Nothingness was a puzzle that couldn’t be decoded because it was incomplete, and after studying the book for a week I’d come to agree. Each page seemed to be a riddle with a solution that was just out of reach. A note at the beginning claimed that the manuscript had been ‘found’ in the corner of an abandoned railway station: ‘It was lying in the open, visible to all, but I was the only one curious enough to pick it up.’ What followed were elliptical quotations: My thinking is muscular. albert einstein 15 I am a strange loop. douglas hofstadter Life is meant to be a joyous adventure. joe k The book had only twenty-one pages that weren’t blank, but some pages contained just one sentence. Page 18, for instance, simply read: ‘The sixth day after I stopped writing the book I sat at B’s place and wrote the book.’ And all of this was very expensively produced, using the highest quality paper and inks – there was a fullcolour, delicate reproduction of a butterfl y on one page – and the endeavour must have cost someone or a group of people an awful lot of money. The missing piece hadn’t turned out to be secret writing in invisible ink but there was another possibility. On page 13 of every copy a hole had been assiduously cut out. Some words were missing. Was the solution to the mystery somehow connected to those missing words? I picked up a rental car at Gothenburg airport. The smell of it – the smell of a newly cleaned rental car – never fails to bring back happy memories of past sleuthing adventures. There were the weeks I spent trailing the conspiracy theorist David Icke as he hypothesized his theory that the secret rulers of the world were giant blood-drinking child-sacrifi cing paedophile lizards that had adopted human form. That was a good story. And it began, as this one had, with the smell of a newly cleaned hire car. THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 16 The satnav took me past the Liseberg funfair, past the stadium where Madonna was due to play the next night, and on towards the business district. I imagined Petter Nordlund’s offi ce would be located there, but instead the satnav told me to take a sharp unexpected left and I found myself bouncing up a tree-lined residential street towards a giant white square clapboard house. This was, it told me, my destination. I walked to the front door and rang the buzzer. A woman in jogging pants answered. ‘Is this Petter Nordlund’s offi ce?’ I asked her. ‘This is his home,’ she said. ‘Oh, I’m sorry,’ I said. ‘Is he here?’ ‘He’s with patients today,’ she said. She had an American accent. ‘He’s a doctor?’ I asked. ‘A psychiatrist,’ she said. We stood on her doorstep and talked for a while. She said her name was Lily and she was Petter’s wife. They’d been childhood sweethearts (he went to school in America) and had been considering settling in her home state of California but then Petter’s uncle died and he inherited this huge house and they just couldn’t resist. Petter, Lily said, was not only a translator but a highly successful psychiatrist. (I later read his LinkedIn page, which said he worked with schizophrenics and psychotics and OCD sufferers, and had also been a ‘protein chemist’ and an adviser to both an ‘international investment company’ and a ‘Cambridge biotech company’ specializing in something called ‘therapeutic peptide discovery and development’.) He was working in a clinic two hours outside Gothenburg, she said, and, no, there 17 was no point in me driving over there. They would never let me in without the proper accreditation. ‘I can’t even get a hold of him when he’s with patients,’ she said. ‘It’s very intense.’ ‘Intense in what way?’ I asked. ‘I don’t even know that!’ she said. ‘He’ll be back in a few days. If you’re still in Gothenburg you’re welcome to try again.’ She paused. ‘So, why are you here? Why do you want to see my husband?’ ‘He translated a very intriguing book,’ I said, ‘called Being or Nothingness. I’ve become so fascinated by the book I wanted to meet him and fi nd out who his employer was and why it was written.’ ‘Oh,’ she said. She sounded surprised. ‘Do you know Being or Nothingness?’ I asked her. ‘Yeah,’ she said. She paused. ‘I . . . Yeah. I know which book you’re talking about. I . . . He translates several things. For companies. And that was . . .’ She trailed off. Then she said, ‘We don’t get into each other’s work. I don’t even pay attention to what he’s doing, quite honestly! I know he’s very much into molecular something, but I don’t understand it. Sometimes he says, “I’ve just translated this for some company,” and if it’s in Swedish, or something, I don’t understand it so I really don’t try and look into his work.’ ‘Anyway, it was lovely talking to you,’ I said. ‘I’ll pop back in a few days?’ ‘Sure,’ said Lily. ‘Sure.’ The days that followed passed slowly. I lay in my hotel room and watched the kind of strange European TV THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 18 that would probably make perfect sense if I understood the language, but because I didn’t the programmes just seemed dreamlike and baffl ing. In one studio show a group of Scandinavian academics watched as one of them poured liquid plastic into a bucket of cold water. It solidifi ed, they pulled it out, handed it around the circle and, as far as I could tell, intellectualized on its random misshapenness. I phoned home but my wife didn’t answer. It crossed my mind that she might be dead. I panicked. Then it turned out that she wasn’t dead. She had just been at the shops. I have panicked unnecessarily in all four corners of the globe. I took a walk. When I returned there was a message waiting for me. It was from Deborah Talmi. A suspect had emerged. Could I call her? The suspect, I discovered to my annoyance, wasn’t in Sweden. He was in Bloomington, Indiana. His name was Levi Shand and he had just gone online to post the most implausible story about his involvement in Being or Nothingness. Levi Shand’s story, Deborah told me, went something like this. He was a student at Indiana University. He’d been driving aimlessly around town when he happened to notice a large brown box sitting in the dirt underneath a railway bridge. So he pulled over to have a closer look at it. The box was unmarked and noticeably clean, as if it had only recently been dumped there. Even though Levi was nervous about opening it – anything could be in there, from a million dollars to a severed head – he 19 plucked up the courage, and discovered eight pristine copies of Being or Nothingness. He read the stickers on each: ‘Warning! Please study the letter to Professor Hofstadter before you read the book. Good Luck!’ and was intrigued. Because he knew who Professor Hofstadter was, and where he lived. ‘I’m not familiar with Professor Hofstadter,’ I said to Deborah. ‘I know there are references to him scattered all over Being or Nothingness. But I couldn’t work out if he’s a real person or a fi ctional character. Is he well known?’ ‘He wrote Gödel, Escher, Bach!’ she replied, surprised by my lack of knowledge. ‘It was momentous.’ I didn’t reply. ‘If you’re a geek,’ sighed Deborah, ‘and you’re just discovering the Internet and especially if you’re a boy, Gödel, Escher, Bach would be like your Bible. It was about how you can use Gödel’s mathematic theories and Bach’s canons to make sense of the experience of consciousness. Lots of young guys really like it. It’s very playful. I haven’t read it in its entirety but it’s on my bookshelf.’ Hofstadter, she said, had published it in the late 1970s. It was lauded. It won a Pulitzer. It was fi lled with brilliant puzzles and word play and meditations on the meaning of consciousness and artifi cial intelligence. It was the kind of book – like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance or A Brief History of Time – that everybody wanted on their shelves but few were clever enough to really understand. THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 20 Even though the world had been at Hofstadter’s feet in 1979 he had retreated from it, and had instead spent the past three decades working quietly as a professor of cognitive science at Indiana University. But he was well known amongst the students. He had a shock of grey hair like Andy Warhol’s and a huge house on the edge of campus, which was where – Levi Shand’s story continued – the young student drove with the intention of presenting Hofstadter with the eight copies of Being or Nothingness he had found in the box underneath the railway bridge. ‘A railway bridge,’ I said to Deborah. ‘Have you noticed the parallel? In that covering letter to Douglas Hofstadter, the writer talks about fi nding some old typewritten pages carelessly thrown in the corner of an abandoned railroad station. And now Levi Shand has found some copies of Being or Nothingness thrown underneath a railway bridge.’ ‘You’re right!’ said Deborah. ‘So what does Levi Shand say happened when he went to Hofstadter’s house to deliver the books?’ I asked. ‘He says he knocked on Hofstadter’s door and it swung open to reveal to his astonishment a harem of beautiful French women. And standing in the midst of the harem was Hofstadter himself. He invited the openmouthed young student inside, took the books, thanked him, and showed him to the door again.’ And that, Deborah said, was the end of Levi Shand’s story. We fell into a puzzled silence. ‘A harem of beautiful French women?’ I said. ‘I don’t believe the story,’ she said. 21 ‘It doesn’t seem plausible,’ I said. ‘I wonder if I can get Levi Shand on the phone?’ ‘I’ve done some research on him,’ Deborah said. ‘He’s got a Facebook page.’ ‘Oh, OK,’ I said. ‘I’ll contact him through that, then.’ There was a silence. ‘Deborah?’ I said. ‘I don’t think he exists,’ Deborah said suddenly. ‘But he’s got a Facebook page,’ I said. ‘With three hundred American friends who look the part,’ Deborah said. ‘You think . . . ?’ I said. ‘I think someone has created a convincing Facebook persona for Levi Shand,’ Deborah said. I took this possibility in. ‘Have you thought about his name?’ Deborah asked. ‘Levi Shand?’ ‘Haven’t you worked it out?’ she said. ‘It’s an anagram.’ I fell silent. ‘ “Lavish End”!’ I suddenly exclaimed. ‘No,’ said Deborah. I got out a piece of paper. ‘Devil Has N . . . ? I asked after a while. ‘ “Live Hands”,’ said Deborah. ‘It’s an anagram of “Live Hands”.’ ‘Oh, OK,’ I said. ‘Like the drawing on the cover of Being or Nothingness,’ prompted Deborah. ‘Two hands drawing each other . . . ?’ ‘So if Levi Shand doesn’t exist,’ I said, ‘who created him?’ THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 22 ‘I think they’re all Hofstadter,’ said Deborah. ‘Levi Shand. Petter Nordlund. I think they’re all Douglas Hofstadter.’ I went for a walk through Gothenburg, feeling quite annoyed and disappointed that I’d been hanging around here for days when the culprit was probably an eminent professor some four thousand miles away at Indiana University. Deborah had offered me supplementary circumstantial evidence to back her theory that the whole puzzle was a product of Douglas Hofstadter’s impish mind. It was, she said, exactly the sort of playful thing he might do. And, being the author of an international bestseller, he would have the fi nancial resources to pull it off. Plus he was no stranger to Sweden. According to his Wikipedia page he lived there in the mid-1960s. Furthermore, Being or Nothingness looked like a Hofstadter book. The clean white cover was reminiscent of the cover of Hofstadter’s follow-up to Gödel, Escher, Bach – 2007’s I Am A Strange Loop. True, the creation of a fake Indiana University student with a fake Facebook page and an unlikely tale about a harem of beautiful French women was an odd addition, but it would do no good to second-guess the motives of a brilliant man like Hofstadter. Furthermore, Deborah believed she had solved the puzzle. Yes, there was a missing piece, but it didn’t take the form of invisible ink or signifi cant words cut out of 23 page 13. It was, she said, the way the book had revealed an inherent narcissism in its recipients. ‘That’s what I Am A Strange Loop is about,’ said Deborah. ‘It’s about how we spend our lives selfreferencing, over and over, in a kind of strange loop. Now lots of people are asking themselves, “Why was I selected to receive this book?” They aren’t talking about the book or the message. They’re talking about themselves. So Being or Nothingness has created a strange loop of people and it is a vessel for them to selfreference.’ She paused. ‘I think that’s Hofstadter’s message.’ It was a compelling theory, and I continued to believe this might be the solution to the riddle right up until the moment, an hour later, I had a Skype video conversation with Levi Shand who, it quickly transpired, wasn’t an invention of Douglas Hofstadter but an actual student from Indiana University. THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 24 He was a handsome young man with black hair, doleful eyes, and a messy student bedroom. He had been easy to track down. I emailed him via his Facebook page. He got back to me straight away (he’d been online at the time) and within seconds we were face to face. He told me it was all true. He really did fi nd the books in a box under a railway viaduct and Douglas Hofstadter really did have a harem of French women living at his home. ‘Tell me exactly what happened when you visited him,’ I said. ‘I was really nervous,’ Levi said, ‘given his prominence on the cognitive-science scene. A beautiful young French girl answered the door. She told me to wait. I looked through into the next room, and there were more beautiful French girls in there.’ ‘How many in total?’ I asked. ‘There were at least six of them,’ said Levi. ‘They had brown hair, blonde hair, all standing there between the kitchen and the dining room. All of them stunningly beautiful.’ ‘Is this true?’ I asked him. ‘Well, they might have been Belgian,’ said Levi. ‘What happened then?’ I asked. ‘Professor Hofstadter came out from the kitchen,’ he said, ‘looking thin but healthy. Charismatic. He took the books, thanked me, and I left. And that’s it.’ ‘And every word of this is true?’ I asked. ‘Every word,’ said Levi. • • • 25 But something didn’t feel right. Levi’s story, and indeed Deborah’s theory, only worked if Douglas Hofstadter was some kind of playful, dilettantish prankster, and nothing I could fi nd suggested he was. In 2007, for example, Deborah Solomon of the New York Times asked him some slightly facetious questions and his replies revealed him to be a serious, quite impatient, man: q. You fi rst became known in 1979, when you published ‘Gödel, Escher, Bach,’ a campus classic, which fi nds parallels between the brains of Bach, M. C. Escher and the mathematician Kurt Gödel. In your new book, ‘I Am a Strange Loop,’ you seem mainly interested in your own brain. a. This book is much straighter. It’s less crazy. Less daring, maybe. q. You really know how to plug a book. a. Well, O.K., I don’t know. Questions of consciousness and soul – that is what the new book was motivated by. q. Your entry in Wikipedia says that your work has inspired many students to begin careers in computing and artifi cial intelligence. a. I have no interest in computers. The entry is fi lled with inaccuracies, and it kind of depresses me. And so on. Hofstadter’s work, I learnt, was informed by two neurological tragedies. When he was twelve it became clear that his young sister Molly was unable to speak or understand language: ‘I was very interested already in how things in my mind worked,’ he told Time magazine in 2007. ‘When Molly’s unfortunate plight THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 26 became apparent, it all started getting connected to the physical world. It really made you think about the brain and the self, and how the brain determines who the person is.’ And then in 1993 his wife, Carol, died, suddenly, of a brain tumour. Their children were two and fi ve. He was left overwhelmed with grief. In I Am A Strange Loop he consoles himself with the thought that she lived on in his brain: ‘I believe that there is a trace of her “I”, her interiority, her inner light, however you want to phrase it, that remains inside me,’ he told Scientifi c American in 2007, ‘and the trace that remains is a valid trace of her self—her soul, if you wish. I have to emphasize that the sad truth of the matter is, of course, that whatever persists in me is a very feeble copy of her. It’s reduced, a sort of low-resolution version, coarse-grained . . . Of course it doesn’t remove the sting of death. It doesn’t say, “Oh, well, it didn’t matter that she died because she lives on just fi ne in my brain.” Would that it were. But, anyway, it is a bit of a consolation.’ None of this painted a picture of a man who might have a harem of French women and a propensity to create a complicated, odd conspiracy involving posting dozens of strange books, anonymously, to academics across the world. I wrote him an email, asking him if Levi Shand’s story about the box under the bridge and the harem of French women was true, and then I went for a walk. When I returned, this was waiting for me in my inbox: Dear Mr. Ronson, I have nothing to do with Being or Nothingness 27 except that I’m mentioned in it. I am just an ‘innocent victim’ of the project. Yes, Mr. Shand came to my house and delivered a few copies of the odd book, but the rest of his story is sheer fabrication. My daughter was having her French lesson with her French tutor in the living room, so perhaps Mr. Shand espied the two of them and heard them speaking French. Also, I speak Italian at home with my kids, and for all I know, Mr. Shand may have mistaken the sound of Italian for French. The point is, there was certainly no ‘house fi lled with beautiful French women’ – that’s utter rubbish. He wanted to make his mission sound mysterious and titillating. It’s a shame that people do this kind of thing and post it on the Web. Sincerely, Douglas Hofstadter I emailed Hofstadter back. Much of Levi Shand’s tale didn’t ring true, I said, not only the business of the harem but also the story of how he found the box underneath the railway viaduct. Could it be possible that Levi Shand was in fact the author of Being or Nothingness? He replied: Levi Shand is certainly not the author of the small white book. I have been sent about 80 copies (70 in English, 10 in Swedish) by its author. They sit untouched in my offi ce. Before the book existed, I received a series of extremely cryptic postcards, all in Swedish (all of which I read, although not carefully, and none of which made THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 28 the least sense at all). People who are normal (i.e., sane, sensible) don’t try to open lines of communication with total strangers by writing them a series of disjointed, weird, cryptic messages. From there on, it only got weirder—fi rst several copies of the book were sent to me in a package, and then, some months later, about 80 copies arrived at my offi ce, and then came the bizarre claim that a bunch of copies “were found under a bridge” on my campus, and then books started arriving at various universities around the world, sent to people in certain disciplines that were vaguely associated with AI, biology, etc. And then there were the scissored-out words (super-weird!), and the taped-in letter, addressed to me. All of it was completely nuts. I could say much more about it all, but I don’t have the time. I have a great deal of experience with people who are smart but unbalanced, people who think they have found the key to the universe, etc. This particular case was exceedingly transparent because it was so exceedingly obsessive. Yes, there was a missing piece of the puzzle, Douglas Hofstadter was saying, but the recipients had got it wrong. They assumed the endeavour was brilliant and rational because they were brilliant and rational and we tend to automatically assume that everybody else is basically just like us. But in fact the missing piece was that the author was a crackpot. The book couldn’t be decoded because it was written by a crackpot. ‘Petter Nordlund?’ I thought. 29 Was Petter Nordlund the sole perpetrator? It seemed unlikely that such a successful man – a distinguished psychiatrist and a protein chemist, whatever that was, and an adviser to a biotech company specializing in therapeutic peptide discovery and development, whatever that was, was actually, in Hofstadter’s words, an ‘extremely obsessive crackpot’. But at 7 p.m. that evening I was face to face with him, and it became quickly obvious that he was indeed the culprit. He was tall, in his fi fties, with an attractive face, the air of an academic. He wore a tweed jacket. He stood in his doorway with his wife at his side. Immediately, I liked him. He had a big, kind, cryptic, smile on his face, and he was wringing his hands like a man possessed. I frequently wring my hands in much the same way. I couldn’t help thinking that – in terms of getting much too obsessed about stupid things that didn’t matter – Petter and I were probably peas in a pod. ‘I’m surprised you’re here,’ Petter said. ‘I hope it isn’t too unpleasant a surprise,’ I said. There was a short silence. ‘If you study Being or Nothingness,’ Petter said, ‘you will realize that you will never fi nd out the author.’ ‘I think I know the author,’ I said. ‘I think it’s you.’ ‘That’s easy to . . .’ Petter tailed off. ‘That’s an easy guess,’ he said. ‘Is it a correct guess?’ I asked. ‘Of course not,’ said Petter. Petter (and Petter Nordlund is not his real name, nor is Lily her real name) bounced up and down on his feet a little. He was adopting the demeanour of a man who had received an unexpected visit from a neighbour just THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 30 as something was boiling over on the stove. But I could tell his air of friendly distraction was a mask and underneath he was feeling quite overwhelmed by my arrival. ‘Petter,’ I said. ‘Let me at least ask you this. Why were those particular people chosen to receive the book?’ At this Petter let out a small gasp. His face lit up. It was as if I had just asked him the most wonderful question that could be asked. ‘Well . . . !’ he said. ‘How would you know who got the book?’ Lily quickly interrupted, a sharpness in her voice. ‘You only translated it.’ And, with that, the moment passed. Petter’s face once again took on the mask of polite distraction. ‘Yes,’ he said. ‘Yes. I really am sorry but I’m going to have to end . . . My intention was just to say hi and go back. I have said more than I should . . . You talk to my wife now.’ Petter backed away then, smiling, back into the shadows of his house, and Lily and I looked at each other. ‘I’m going to Norway now,’ she said. ‘Goodbye.’ ‘Goodbye,’ I said. I fl ew back to London. There was an email waiting for me from Petter. ‘You seem like a nice man. The fi rst step of the project will be over soon and it will be up to others to take it to the next level. Whether you will play a part I don’t know—but you will know . . .’ ‘I would be glad to play a part if you give me some guidance as to how I might do so,’ I wrote back. 31 ‘Well you see, that is the tricky part, knowing what to do,’ he replied. ‘We call it life! Trust me, when your time comes you will know.’ Several weeks passed. My time didn’t come, or if it did come I didn’t notice. Finally I telephoned Deborah and told her that I had solved the mystery. I sat outside the Starbucks in the Brunswick Centre, Russell Square, Central London, and watched as Deborah turned the corner and walked fast towards me. She sat down and smiled. ‘So?’ she said. ‘Well . . .’ I said. I recounted to her my conversations with Levi Shand and Douglas Hofstadter, my meetings with Petter and Lily, and my subsequent email correspondence. When I fi nished she looked at me and she said, ‘Is that it?’ ‘Yes!’ I said. ‘It all happened because the author was – according to Hofstadter – a crackpot. Everyone was looking for the missing piece of the puzzle, and the missing piece turned out to be that.’ ‘Oh,’ she said. She looked disappointed. ‘But it isn’t disappointing,’ I said. ‘Can’t you see? It’s incredibly interesting. Aren’t you struck by how much action occurred simply because something went wrong with one man’s brain? It’s as if the rational world, your world, was a still pond and Petter’s brain was a jagged rock thrown into it, creating odd ripples everywhere.’ The thought of this suddenly excited me hugely: Petter Nordlund’s craziness had had a huge infl uence on THE MISSING PART OF THE PUZZLE REVEALED THE PSYCHOPATH TEST 32 the world. It caused intellectual examination, economic activity, and formed a kind of community. Disparate academics, scattered across continents, had become intrigued and paranoid and narcissistic because of it. They’d met on blogs and message boards and had debated for hours, forming conspiracy theories about shadowy Christian organizations, etc. One of them had felt motivated to rendezvous with me in a Costa Coffee. I’d fl own to Sweden in an attempt to solve the mystery. And so on. I thought about my own over-anxious brain, my own sort of madness. Was it a more powerful engine in my life than my rationality? I remembered those psychologists who said psychopaths made the world go around. They meant it: society was, they claimed, an expression of that particular sort of madness. Suddenly, madness was everywhere, and I was determined to learn about the impact it had on the way society evolves. I’ve always believed society to be a fundamentally rational thing, but what if it isn’t? What if it is built on insanity? I told Deborah all of this. She frowned. ‘That Being or Nothingness thing,’ she said. ‘Are you sure it was all because of one crazy Swedish man?’ 33	Translation - Portuguese O TESTE DO PSICOPATA JON RONSON Viagem à Indústria da Loucura Capítulo 1 A PEÇA QUE FALTAVA NO ENIGMA Esta é uma história sobre loucura. Tem início com um encontro numa cafetaria Costa Coffee em Bloomsbury, no centro de Londres. Os neurologistas tendiam a frequentar o Costa, pelo facto de o Departamento de Neurologia do University College de Londres ser logo ao virar da esquina. E ali estava agora mesmo uma neurologista, virando para Southampton Row e acenando-me timidamente. Chamava-se Deborah Talmi. Tinha o ar de quem passa os dias enfiado em laboratórios e não está habituado a encontros peculiares com jornalistas em cafés, nem a ver-se envolvido em mistérios desconcertantes. Vinha acompanhada de um jovem, alto com ar de académico e barba por fazer. Sentaram-se. – Deborah – apresentou-se ela. – Jon – respondi. – E eu chamo-me James – disse o outro. – E então? – inquiri. – Trouxe-o? Deborah assentiu com a cabeça. Fez deslizar silenciosamente um pacote sobre a mesa. Abri-o e revirei o conteúdo nas mãos. – É muito bonito – disse eu. Em julho passado, Deborah recebeu uma estranha encomenda postal. O autor era um certo «Joe K» (quiçá uma referência a Joseph K, de Kafka, ou talvez um anagrama de «joke»?) e o título era O Ser Ou o Nada, aparente alusão ao ensaio de 1943 de Sartre, O Ser E o Nada. Alguém recortara cuidadosamente à tesoura a página que indicaria os pormenores de publicação e copyright, o número ISBN, etc., pelo que nenhuma pista se podia extrair daí. Num autocolante lia-se: «Atenção! Por favor estudar a carta para o Professor Hofstadter antes de ler o livro. Boa sorte!» Deborah folheou o livro. Tratava-se, manifestamente, de algum tipo de enigma à espera de ser resolvido, incluindo versos crípticos, páginas de onde haviam sido recortadas palavras, etc. Olhou de novo o Dir-lhe-ei mais quando eu voltar! Um dos seus colegas estava de visita à Suécia, pelo que, ainda que ele não fosse o tipo de pessoa atreito a enviar encomendas misteriosas, seria ele o remetente mais verosímil. Mas quando o colega regressou e Deborah o questionou, ele afirmou nada saber sobre o assunto. Sentia-se intrigada. Consultou a Internet. E foi então que descobriu que não estava sozinha. – Só neurologistas é que receberam? – perguntei-lhe. – Não – respondeu ela. – Muitos eram-no, sim. Mas também havia um astrofísico do Tibete. Talvez, sugeria um dos destinatários da encomenda, o livro devesse ser lido como uma alegoria cristã, «incluindo o enigmático Dir-lhe-ei mais quando eu voltar! (claramente uma referência à Segunda Vinda de Jesus). O autor, ou autores, parecem contraditar a formulação ateísta 'O Ser E o Nada' de Sartre – em língua inglesa, Being AND Nothing –, contrapondo-lhe 'B OR N', 'nascido'.» Sarah Allred, investigadora de psicologia percetual, manifestou a sua concordância: «Tenho uma vaga suspeita de que vamos acabar por concluir que se trata de uma campanha de marketing viral, ou outro tipo qualquer de campanha de publicidade, concebida por uma organização religiosa qualquer, e que os académicos, intelectuais, cientistas e filósofos vão acabar por ficar mal na fotografia. A outros, pelo contrário, tal cenário afigurava-se improvável: «O fator preço exclui a possibilidade da teoria viral, exceto se a campanha pressupuser desde logo que os seus alvos cuidadosamente selecionados reflitam on-line acerca do misterioso livro.» A maioria dos destinatários considerava que a resposta residia, de forma intrigante, neles próprios. Eles tinham sido selecionados um a um para receber a encomenda. Havia claramente um padrão em jogo, mas qual? Teriam estado presentes numa mesma conferência, anos antes? Estariam a ser selecionados para um lugar de topo numa qualquer organização secreta? «Será que o primeiro a decifrar o código é que fica com o lugar, por assim dizer?», escrevia um australiano destinatário da encomenda. O que parecia óbvio era que um indivíduo ou organização brilhantes concebera um enigma tão complexo que nem mesmo académicos dotados como eles logravam decifrá-lo. Talvez essa decifração simplesmente não fosse possível, por o código estar incompleto. Talvez lhe faltasse uma peça. Alguém sugeriu «observar a carta de perto, junto a uma lâmpada, ou sujeitá-la ao teste dos vapores de iodo. Pode haver alguma escrita secreta, com recurso a outro tipo de tinta.» Mas não se encontrou escrita secreta alguma. Baixaram os braços, derrotados. Se este era um enigma impossível de resolver por académicos, talvez se devesse recorrer a alguém mais rude, como um detetive privado ou um jornalista. Deborah lançou a pergunta no grupo. Que repórter seria suficientemente tenaz e curioso para se interessar pelo mistério? Analisaram alguns nomes. Foi então que James, o amigo de Deborah, aventou o nome de Jon Ronson. No dia em que recebi o e-mail de Deborah a convidar-me para o Costa Coffee, encontrava-me a meio dum horrível ataque de ansiedade. Andava a entrevistar um certo Dave McKay, líder de um pequeno grupo religioso australiano denominado Jesus Christians. McKay sugerira recentemente aos membros do culto que doassem um dos seus rins a um desconhecido. De início, eu e Dave entendêramo-nos muito bem. Parecia entusiasticamente excêntrico e, em resultado disso, eu estava a conseguir recolher material bom para a minha reportagem – citações divertidas e lunáticas, etc. –, mas quando sugeri que a pressão grupal, emanada de Dave, seria porventura a razão que levava alguns dos membros mais vulneráveis a optar por doar um rim, explodiu. Enviou-me uma mensagem em que afirmava ir mandar travar uma doação iminente, para me dar uma lição. Deixaria que a destinatária do rim morresse, fazendo pesar sobre mim o fardo da sua morte. Senti-me horrorizado com a possibilidade de a destinatária do rim sair prejudicada, e em simultâneo bastante satisfeito por Dave me enviar uma mensagem tão demente, ótima para o meu artigo. Mencionei a um jornalista que o homem parecia bastante psicopático (não sabia absolutamente nada acerca de psicopatas, mas presumi que seria o tipo de coisas que seriam capazes de fazer). O jornalista publicou a citação. Alguns dias depois, recebi um e-mail de Dave em que me dizia: «Considero difamatório da sua parte ter afirmado que sou psicopata. Procurei aconselhamento jurídico. A malícia de que deu provas em relação a mim não lhe dá o direito de me difamar.» Era esta a causa do meu enorme pânico, no dia em que o e-mail de Deborah chegou à minha caixa de correio. – Onde é que eu estava com a cabeça? – comentei com a minha mulher, Elaine. – Estava a gostar da entrevista. Estava a gostar da conversa. E agora está tudo lixado. O Dave McKay vai processar-me. – O que é que se passa? – gritou o meu filho, Joel, entrando na sala. – Porque é que está toda a gente aos berros? – Fui eu que cometi um erro estúpido: chamei psicopata a um homem, e ele agora está zangado – expliquei. – O que é que ele vai fazer-nos? – inquiriu o Joel. Seguiu-se um curto silêncio. – Nada – respondi. – Mas então, se ele não vai fazer-nos nada, porque estás preocupado?» – perguntou ele. – Só estou preocupado por o ter feito zangar-se. Não gosto de irritar nem incomodar os outros. É por isso que estou triste. – Estás a mentir – disse o Joel, semicerrando os olhos. Eu sei que não te importas nada com irritar ou incomodar os outros. O que é que não me estás a contar? – Contei-te tudo o que havia para contar – retorqui. – Ele vai atacar-nos? – indagou o Joel. – Não! – respondi. – Não, não! Isso, definitivamente, não vai acontecer! – Corremos perigo? – gritou o Joel. – Ele não vai atacar-nos – gritei eu também. – Vai simplesmente processar-nos. Só quer ficar-me com o dinheiro. – Oh, Deus – disse o Joel. Enviei a Dave um e-mail a pedir-lhe desculpa por lhe ter chamado psicopata. «Obrigado, Jon», respondeu ele de imediato. «O meu respeito por si aumentou consideravelmente. Espero que, se voltarmos a encontrar-nos, o possamos fazer um pouco mais na qualidade do que se poderia chamar amigos.» E pronto, pensei para comigo, cá estou eu mais uma vez a preocupar-me sem razão. Percorri os meus e-mails não lidos e encontrei o da Deborah Talmi. Dizia que ela e muitos outros académicos de todo o mundo tinham recebido por correio uma misteriosa encomenda. Um amigo dela que lera os meus livros dissera-lhe que eu era o tipo de jornalista capaz de se interessar por enredos policiais bizarros. Terminava assim: «Espero ter conseguido transmitir-lhe a sensação de estranheza que tudo isto suscita em mim, e quão aliciante é esta história. É como um conto de aventuras, ou um reality game alternativo, e estamos reféns de todo este mistério. Enviando a encomenda a investigadores, espicaçaram a investigadora que há em mim, mas não consegui achar a resposta. Espero sinceramente que aceite o desafio.» Agora, no Costa Coffee, ela olhava o livro, que eu examinava, revirando-o nas mãos. – No essencial – disse ela –, alguém está a tentar captar a atenção de académicos específicos, fazendo-a incidir sobre algo, de modo muito misterioso, e eu estou ansiosa por perceber a razão. Parece-me uma campanha demasiado elaborada para ser da responsabilidade de um único indivíduo, agindo em privado. O livro está a tentar dizer-nos algo. Só não sei o quê. Adorava descobrir quem mo enviou, e porquê, mas não tenho dotes de investigação.» – Bem... – comecei eu. Fiquei em silêncio, examinando o livro com ar sério. Beberiquei o café. – Vou tentar.  Disse a Deborah e a James que gostaria de iniciar a minha investigação examinando os seus locais de trabalho. Expliquei que queria ver a caixa de correio onde Deborah descobrira pela primeira vez o pacote. Trocaram um olhar furtivo como que significando: «Que sítio esquisito para começar, mas quem se atreve a pôr em questão os métodos de trabalho dos grandes detetives?» O seu olhar poderá, na verdade, não ter significado isso, mas antes: «A investigação do Jon não pode, seriamente, beneficiar de uma ronda pelos nossos escritórios, e é ligeiramente estranho ele querer fazê-la. Esperemos não ter escolhido o jornalista errado. Esperemos que ele não seja um tarado qualquer, nem que tenha uma agenda escondida que o leve a querer ver os nossos edifícios por dentro.» Se foi esse o significado do olhar que trocaram, acertaram: eu tinha de facto uma agenda escondida que me levava a querer ver os seus edifícios por dentro. O departamento de James era uma laje de cimento totalmente desinteressante, logo à saída de Russel Square – a Faculdade de Psicologia do University College de Londres. Fotografias desbotadas dos anos 60 e 70, espalhadas pelas paredes, mostravam crianças presas a máquinas de aparência assustadora, com fios elétricos pendentes das cabeças. Sorriam para a fotografia com excitação inadvertida, como se estivessem na praia. Em tempos, fora manifestamente feita uma tentativa de melhorar a aparência destes espaços públicos, pintando o corredor com um amarelo vistoso. A razão, ao que parecia, era o facto de irem ali muitos bebés sujeitar-se a testes ao cérebro, e alguém se ter lembrado de que a cor amarela poderia acalmá-los. Mas eu não percebia como. Era tal a fealdade opressiva do edifício, que isso seria o mesmo que enfiar um nariz encarnado num cadáver e dizer que era o palhaço do McDonald's. Passei a vista pelos gabinetes. Em cada um deles, um neurologista ou um psicólogo debruçava-se sobre a secretária, concentrando-se denodadamente sobre um qualquer tema relacionado com o cérebro. Num deles, explicaram-me, o objeto da observação era um homem do País de Gales que reconhecia todas as suas ovelhas como indivíduos, mas era incapaz de reconhecer rostos humanos, incluindo o da mulher, e até o seu mesmo, ao espelho. Esta doença é designada prosopagnosia, ou cegueira a rostos. Os seus pacientes, aparentemente, insultam constantemente, de forma inadvertida, os seus colegas de trabalho, vizinhos e cônjuges, ao não lhes retribuírem os sorrisos quando se cruzam com eles na rua, ou em situações semelhantes. As pessoas não conseguem deixar de se sentir ofendidas, mesmo que saibam que a indelicadeza resulta da doença e não de arrogância. Os sentimentos negativos são, às vezes, contagiosos. Noutro gabinete, um neurologista estudava o caso, datado de julho de 1996, de um médico, ex-piloto da Royal Air Force, que voara sobre um campo de cultivo em plena luz do dia, dera meia volta, voara de novo sobre o mesmo campo quinze minutos depois, para então avistar, subitamente, um grande círculo inscrito no campo. Era como se ele se tivesse simplesmente materializado. Estendia-se por uma área de 4 hectares e consistia em 151 círculos distintos. O círculo, denominado Julia Set (Conjunto de Julia), tornou-se o mais celebrado da história dos círculos inscritos em campos de cultivo. Foram comercializados T-shirts e posters. Organizaram-se congressos. O movimento de investigação das inscrições em campos de cultivo estava em declínio, pelo facto de se tornar cada vez mais óbvio que os círculos eram feitos, não por extra terrestres, mas sim por artistas conceptuais, na calada da noite, utilizando pranchas de madeira e corda. Este, porém, aparecera do nada no decorrer de um intervalo de quinze minutos entre as duas viagens do piloto sobre o campo. O neurologista deste gabinete tentava descobrir por que razão o cérebro do piloto não conseguira detetar o círculo na sua primeira passagem. É que ele já lá estava, pois fora inscrito na noite anterior por um grupo de artistas conceptuais conhecidos por Team Satan, com recurso a pranchas de madeira e corda. Num terceiro gabinete, vi uma mulher com um exemplar do livro Little Miss Brainy na prateleira. Pareceu-me bem-disposta, jovial e atraente. – Quem é esta? – perguntei a James. – Essi Viding – respondeu ele. – O que é que ela estuda? – Psicopatas. Espreitei para dentro, olhando para Essi. Ela avistou-nos, sorriu e acenou com a mão. – Deve ser perigoso – observei. – Uma vez ouvi uma história sobre ela – disse James. – Na altura, entrevistava um psicopata. Mostrou-lhe uma fotografia de um rosto de expressão assustada, pedindo-lhe que identificasse a emoção em causa. Ele respondeu que não sabia dizer de que emoção se tratava, mas que era a mesma que as pessoas adotavam antes de ele as matar. Prossegui corredor fora, antes de me deter e observar de novo Essi Viding. Nunca pensara demasiado sobre psicopatas antes daquele momento, e perguntei-me se não deveria tentar conhecer alguns. Parecia-me extraordinário haver pessoas cujo estado neurológico, de acordo com o relato de James, os tornava tão aterrorizadores, semelhantes a uma criatura espacial totalmente malévola, saída de um filme de ficção científica. Recordei-me vagamente de ouvir psicólogos afirmar que existe uma preponderância de psicopatas no topo da escala, no mundo empresarial e na política, pelo facto de a ausência clínica de empatia constituir um trunfo nesses ambientes. Será que isso era de facto verdade? Essi acenou-me de novo. E decidi que não, seria um erro vasculhar no mundo dos psicopatas, um erro especialmente grande para alguém, como eu, que sofre de excesso de ansiedade. Retribuí o aceno e prossegui pelo corredor fora. O edifício de Deborah, o Wellcome Trust Center for Neuroimaging do University College de Londres, situava-se ao virar da esquina de Queen Square. Era mais moderno, e estava equipado com gaiolas de Faraday e scanners fMRI, operados por técnicos com ar de cromos, envergando T-shirts com motivos de banda desenhada. A sua aparência de totós tornava as máquinas menos intimidantes. «O nosso objetivo», afirmava o sítio na Web do Centro, «é compreender de que forma o pensamento e a perceção emergem da atividade cerebral, e como esses processos se degradam nas doenças neurológicas e psiquiátricas. Chegámos à caixa de correio de Deborah. Examinei-a. – OK – disse eu. – Certo. Fiquei ali por momentos, acenando com a cabeça. Deborah retribuiu o aceno. Olhámo-nos. Agora era seguramente a ocasião perfeita para lhe revelar a minha agenda escondida para querer examinar por dentro os seus edifícios. A razão era que os meus níveis de ansiedade, nos últimos meses, tinham rebentado com a escala. Não era normal. As pessoas normais, definitivamente, não sentem este tipo de pânico. As pessoas normais, definitivamente, não sentem que estão a ser eletrocutadas de dentro para fora por uma criança por nascer, munida de um taser de miniatura, não sentem que estão a ser cutucadas com um fio elétrico que emite o tipo de carga que impede o gado de invadir os campos adjacentes. E assim, o meu plano, ao longo de todo o dia, desde o Costa Coffe, fora o de conduzir a conversa para o tema do meu cérebro excessivamente ansioso. Talvez Deborah se oferecesse para me sujeitar a um scanner fMRI, ou coisa parecida. Mas ela parecia tão satisfeita com o facto de eu ter concordado em solucionar o mistério de O Ser Ou o Nada que eu ainda não tivera coragem de lhe mencionar a minha falha, não fosse com isso estragar a mística. Agora era a minha última oportunidade. Deborah viu-me a olhar para ela, como se me preparasse para dizer algo de importante. – Sim? – fez ela. Seguiu-se um curto silêncio. Olhei-a. – Eu vou-a mantendo a par – respondi. O voo low cost da Ryanair das 6 da manhã para Gotemburgo estava cheio que nem um ovo, provocando-me uma sensação de claustrofobia. Tentei chegar ao bolso das calças para pegar no bloco de notas e escrever uma lista de coisas a fazer, mas a minha perna estava entalada numa posição impossível debaixo da mesa-tabuleiro, que estava atafulhada com os restos do meu pacote de pequeno almoço. Precisava de planear a estada em Gotemburgo. O jeito que não me daria o bloco de notas. A minha memória já não é o que era. Na verdade, hoje em dia, é frequente sair de casa com uma expressão de excitação e propósito no rosto para me deter ao fim de algum tempo, e ficar parado com ar confuso. Nesses momentos, tudo se me torna irreal e vago. O mais provável é que um dia a minha memória desapareça de todo, como aconteceu com a do meu pai, e nessa altura não haverá livros para escrever. Preciso mesmo de juntar um pé-de-meia. Tentei baixar-me para coçar o pé. Não fui capaz. Estava preso. Estava preso, c. Que c... «ICCC!», gritei involuntariamente. A minha perna disparou para cima, batendo na mesa-tabuleiro. O passageiro do lado olhou para mim com ar espantado. eu tinha soltado um guincho não intencional. Olhei para a frente, com ar chocado, mas também ligeiramente assustado. Não tinha a noção de que existissem dentro de mim sons tão misteriosos e invulgares. Tinha uma pista em Gotemburgo: o nome e morada profissional de um homem que poderia conhecer a identidade ou identidades de «Joe K». O seu nome era Petter Nordlund. Muito embora nenhuma das encomendas enviadas aos académicos contivesse quaisquer pistas – em especial, nomes de possíveis autores ou distribuidores – algures, enterrado bem fundo no arquivo de uma biblioteca sueca, eu descobrira «Petter Nordlund», referido como tradutor inglês de O Ser E o Nada. Uma pesquisa no Google nada mais revelou sobre ele, com exceção da morada de uma empresa de Gotemburgo, de nome BIR, à qual ele estava de alguma forma ligado. Caso, como suspeitavam as pessoas que haviam recebido o livro, uma equipa de inteligentes criadores de enigmas estivesse por detrás desta dispendiosa e enigmática campanha, por razões ainda não determinadas (propaganda religiosa? marketing viral? recrutamento?), Petter Nordlund era a minha única porta de entrada. Só que não sabia que eu chegara. Eu receava que, se o soubesse, desaparecesse da circulação. Ou talvez avisasse a organização obscura por detrás de O Ser Ou o Nada, qualquer que ela fosse. Talvez então tentassem deter-me de uma forma qualquer inimaginável para mim. Em todo o caso, cheguei à conclusão de que meter o pé à porta de Petter Nordlund constituía a estratégia mais astuta . Era uma questão de sorte. Toda a viagem era uma simples questão de sorte. Os tradutores trabalham frequentemente a grande distância dos seus clientes, e era perfeitamente possível que Petter Nordlund não estivesse a par de nada. Alguns dos que tinham recebido a encomenda haviam sugerido que O Ser Ou o Nada era um enigma impossível de descodificar pelo facto de estar incompleto e eu, ao fim de uma semana de estudo do livro, acabara por concordar. Cada página parecia constituir um enigma de solução inalcançável. Uma nota logo no início afirmava que o manuscrito fora «encontrado» num canto de uma estação de caminhos-de-ferro abandonada: «Estava no chão, à vista de todos, mas eu fui o único suficientemente curioso para apanhar o pacote.» Seguiam-se citações elípticas. O meu pensamento é muscular. ALBERT EINSTEIN Sou um estranho loop. DOUGLAS HOFSTADTER A vida deve ser uma aventura feliz. JOE K O livro apresentava apenas 21 páginas que não estavam em branco, mas algumas dessas incluíam uma frase apenas. A página 18, por exemplo, dizia simplesmente: «No sexto dia depois de ter parado de escrever o livro, sentei-me em casa de B , e escrevi-o.» E tudo isto numa produção muito dispendiosa, utilizando papel e tintas da mais alta qualidade – numa página, por exemplo, encontrava-se uma delicada reprodução colorida de um borboleta – pelo que o empreendimento deve ter saído muito caro a uma ou mais pessoas. A peça que faltava no enigma acabou por não ser uma qualquer escrita secreta a tinta invisível – havia outra possibilidade. Na página 13 de todos os exemplares fora infalivelmente talhado um buraco. Faltavam algumas palavras. Estaria a solução do mistério de alguma forma ligada a estas palavras em falta? Aluguei um carro no aeroporto de Gotemburgo. O seu cheiro – o cheiro de um carro de aluguer acabado de limpar – nunca deixa de me trazer memórias felizes de aventuras passadas em investigações. Houve aquelas semanas que passei a seguir o rasto de David Icke, o adepto da teoria da conspiração, enquanto ele concebia a sua tese segundo a qual os governantes secretos do mundo eram lagartos gigantes pedófilos que haviam adotado a forma humana e realizavam sacrifícios de crianças depois de lhes beber o sangue. Era uma boa história. E começou, tal como esta, com o cheiro de um carro de aluguer acabado de limpar. O GPS levou-me para lá do parque de diversões de Liseberg, bem como do estádio onde a Madonna iria atuar na noite seguinte, e em direção à zona dos escritórios. Imaginei que o de Petter Nordlund se situasse aí, mas, em vez disso, o GPS mandou-me fazer uma curva pronunciada e inesperada à esquerda, após o que dei comigo a subir uma rua residencial ladeada de árvores, em direção a uma enorme casa quadrada branca revestida a madeira. Chegara, informou-me ele, ao meu destino. Dirigi-me à porta da frente e toquei a campaínha. Atendeu-me uma mulher de calças de fato de treino. – O escritório de Petter Nordlund é aqui? – Aqui é a casa dele – respondeu ela. – Oh, peço desculpa. Ele está? – Hoje está a ver doentes – disse ela, com sotaque americano. – Ele é médico? – perguntei. – Psiquiatra. Ficámos um pouco a conversar à entrada da casa. Explicou-me que se chamava Lily e era casada com Petter. Namoravam desde miúdos (ele estudara na América) e tinham ponderado instalarem-se no estado natal dela, a Califórnia, quando um tio de Petter morreu, legando-lhe este casarão, e não resistiram a aproveitar. Petter, segundo Lily, era não apenas tradutor mas um psiquiatra de grande sucesso. (Li mais tarde a sua página no LinkedIn, onde afirmava que trabalhava com esquizofrénicos, psicóticos e pacientes de perturbação obsessivo-compulsiva, tendo sido igualmente especialista em «química proteica», além de consultor de uma «empresa internacional de investimento» e de uma «empresa de biotecnologia de Cambridge», especializadas na designada «descoberta e desenvolvimento de peptídeos terapêuticos».) Trabalhava numa clínica a duas horas de distância de Gotemburgo, explicou-me ela e, não, não valia a pena eu ir até lá. Nunca me deixariam entrar sem a acreditação adequada. Eu não consigo chegar até ele quando está a ver doentes – explicou. – É uma coisa muito intensa. – Intensa em que aspeto? – inquiri. – Nem isso eu sei – respondeu-me. – Ele volta daqui a poucos dias. Se você ainda estiver em Gotemburgo, tente de novo. – Fez uma pausa. – E afinal, o que o traz por cá? Porque quer ver o meu marido? – Ele traduziu um livro muito intrigante – respondi –, chamado O Ser Ou o Nada. Fiquei tão fascinado com o livro que quis conhecê-lo, para descobrir para quem ele o traduzira e por que razão fora escrito. – Ah – fez ela, aparentando surpresa. – Conhece O Ser Ou o Nada? – perguntei-lhe. – Sim – respondeu. Fez uma pausa. – Eu... sim. Sei de que livro é que está a falar. Eu... Ele traduz várias coisas. Para empresas. E esse foi... – Calou-se, antes de dizer: – Nós não nos imiscuímos no trabalho um do outro. Nem sequer presto atenção ao que ele faz, para ser honesta! Sei que ele está ligado a uma coisa qualquer molecular, mas não percebo nada disso. Por vezes, diz «Acabei de traduzir isto para uma companhia qualquer» e, se estiver em sueco, ou coisa parecida, não percebo nada, por isso nem sequer tento espreitar o trabalho dele. – Bom, de qualquer maneira, foi excelente falar consigo – disse eu. – Posso voltar daqui a uns dias? – Claro – disse Lily. – Claro. Os dias que se seguiram custaram a passar. Deixei-me ficar no meu quarto de hotel a ver o tipo de estranhos programas de TV europeia que, provavelmente, fariam todo o sentido caso eu percebesse a língua. Não sendo esse o caso, os programas pareciam-me simplesmente irreais e desconcertantes. Num programa gravado em estúdio, por exemplo, um grupo de académicos escandinavos observava um deles a verter plástico líquido para um balde de água fria. O plástico solidificava, eles retiravam-no, passavam-no em roda e, tanto quanto me apercebia, racionalizavam acerca da aleatoriedade da forma assumida. Telefonei para casa, mas a minha mulher não respondeu. Passou-me pela cabeça que pudesse estar morta. Entrei em pânico. Acabei por descobrir que não morrera. Tinha simplesmente ido às compras. Tenho entrado desnecessariamente em pânico nos quatro cantos do globo. Dei um passeio. Quando regressei, esperava-me uma mensagem. Era de Deborah Talmi. Aparecera um suspeito. Será que podia ligar-lhe? O suspeito, descobri contrariado, não se encontrava na Suécia, mas sim em Bloomington, no Indiana. Chamava-se Levi Shand e tinha acabado de entrar on-line para publicar uma história totalmente implausível acerca do seu envolvimento em O Ser Ou o Nada. A história de Levi Shand, segundo Deborah me contou, era algo de parecido com isto. Era aluno da Universidade do Indiana. Em determinado momento, guiava sem destino pela cidade quando calhou aperceber-se de uma grande caixa de cartão no chão, debaixo de uma ponte de caminho de ferro. Parou então o carro, para a inspecionar mais de perto. A caixa não tinha nada escrito e parecia manifestamente limpa, como se só lá tivesse sido deixada há pouco tempo. Apesar de a perspetiva de abrir a caixa o deixar nervoso – podia conter fosse o que fosse, desde um milhão de dólares a uma cabeça cortada –, Levi reuniu coragem, e descobriu oito exemplares imaculados de O Ser Ou o Nada. Leu os autocolantes que se encontravam em cada um: «Atenção! Por favor estudar a carta para o Professor Hofstadter antes de ler o livro! Boa sorte!» e ficou intrigado. É que conhecia o Professor Hofstadter, e sabia onde morava. – Não conheço o Professor Hofstadter – disse eu a Deborah. – Sei que há referências a ele espalhadas ao longo do O Ser Ou o Nada. Mas não cheguei a perceber se é uma pessoa real ou uma personagem de ficção. Ele é conhecido? – Ele escreveu Gödel, Escher, Bach! – retorquiu ela, surpreendida com a minha ignorância. – Foi uma coisa importantíssima. Não respondi. – Para quem for um cromo, um geek, – suspirou Deborah –, e estiver a descobrir a Internet, especialmente se se for rapaz, Gödel, Escher, Bach é uma espécie de Bíblia. Trata de como utilizar as teorias matemáticas de Gödel e os cânones de Bach para dar sentido à experiência da consciência. Há muitos jovens que gostam imenso do livro. É muito divertido. Eu não o li todo, mas tenho-o na estante. Hofstadter, prosseguiu ela, publicara-o no final da década de 1970, sendo muito bem recebido pela crítica. Conquistou um Prémio Pulitzer. Estava cheio de brilhantes enigmas, jogos de palavras e meditações acerca do sentido da consciência e da inteligência artificial. Era o tipo de livro – como Zen e a Arte de Manutenção de Motocicletas ou Uma Breve História do Tempo – que toda a gente queria ter na prateleira, mas poucos eram suficientemente inteligentes para de facto entender. Apesar de ter o mundo a seus pés, Hofstadter retirou-se da ribalta em 1979, dedicando as três décadas seguintes a trabalhar discretamente como professor de Teoria Cognitiva na Universidade do Indiana. Mas era bem conhecido entre os alunos. Tinha uma madeixa de cabelo grisalho semelhante à de Andy Warhol, e um casarão à beira do campus universitário. Fora para aí – prosseguia o relato de Levi Shand – que o jovem estudante seguira com o intuito de apresentar a Hofstadter os oitos exemplares de O Ser Ou o Nada que descobrira na caixa por baixo da ponte do caminho de ferro. – Uma ponte de caminho de ferro – disse eu a Deborah. – Apercebeu-se do paraleleismo? Naquela carta de apresentação dirigida ao Douglas Hofstadter, o autor refere ter encontrado páginas velhas, escritas à máquina, atiradas descuidadamente para um canto de uma estação de caminho de ferro abandonada. E agora Levi Shand encontrou umas cópias de O Ser Ou o Nada abandonadas sob uma ponte de caminho de ferro. – Tem razão – disse Deborah. – E afinal, o que diz o Levi Shand que aconteceu quando foi a casa do Hofstadter entregar os livros? – inquiri. – Diz que bateu à porta do Hofstadter e quando esta se abriu, deparou-se, para seu grande espanto, com um harém de belas mulheres francesas, e no meio delas, o próprio Hofstadter. Convidou o jovem estudante boquiaberto a entrar, recebeu os livros, agradeceu-lhe, e conduziu-o de volta à porta. E assim, explicou a Deborah terminava a história de Levi Shand. Caímos num silêncio perplexo. – Um harém de belas mulheres francesas? – repeti. – Não acredito nesta história – respondeu ela. – Não parece plausível – disse eu. – Pergunto-me se conseguirei falar com o Levi Shand ao telefone? – Já fiz um bocadinho de investigação sobre ele – disse Deborah. – Tem página no Facebook. – Ah, OK – disse eu. – Nesse caso, vou contactá-lo por aí. Seguiu-se um silêncio. – Deborah? – Não me parece que ele exista – disse ela subitamente. – Mas tem página no Facebook. – Com trezentos amigos americanos com bom ar – respondeu Deborah. – Acha que... – Acho que alguém criou uma persona convincente para o Levi Shand no Facebook – respondeu ela. Processei esta possibilidade na minha mente. – Já pensou no nome dele? – questionou-me Deborah. – Levi Shand? – Não percebeu? É um anagrama. Fiquei em silêncio. – «Lavish End!» «Extremidade Generosa»! – exclamei subitamente. – Não – disse Deborah. Peguei num pedaço de papel. – Devil Has N?... – perguntei ao fim de um momento. – «Live Hands», «Mãos Vivas» – disse Deborah. É um anagrama de «live ends». – Ah, OK – disse eu. – Como o desenho da capa de O Ser Ou o Nada – prosseguiu Deborah. – Duas mãos a desenharem-se mutuamente...? – Nesse caso, se Levi Shand não existe – disse eu –, quem o criou? – Parece-me que eles são todos Hofstadter – disse Deborah. Levi Shand. Petter Nordlund. Acho que eles são todos Douglas Hofstadter. Fui dar um passeio por Gotemburgo, sentindo-me bastante incomodado e desapontado por ter passado ali dias seguidos, à espera, quando o culpado, era, com toda a probabilidade, um eminente professor que vivia a uns 6000 quilmetros dali, na uUniversidade do Indiana. Deborah providenciara-me provas circunstanciais suplementares que sustentavam a sua teoria segundo a qual todo o enigma era produto da mente endiabrada de Douglas Hofstadter. Era, nas suas palavras, exatamente o tipo de brincadeira de que ele era capaz. E sendo o autor de um bestseller internacional, seria de imaginar que dispusesse dos recursos financeiros para a perpetrar. Além do mais, a Suécia não lhe era estranha. Segundo a sua página da Wikipedia, viveu nesse país em meados da década de 1960. Além disso, O Ser Ou o Nada tinha todo o ar de ser um livro de Hofstadter. A capa branca e limpa fazia recordar a capa do livro de Hofstadter que se seguira a Gödel, Escher, Bach – I Am A Strange Loop, de 2007. É verdade que a criação de um falso aluno da universidade do Indiana com uma falsa página no Facebook e uma história improvável acerca de um harém de belas francesas era um estranho acrescento, mas de nada serviria tentar adivinhar as motivações de um homem brilhante como Hofstadter. Além disso, Deborah julgava ter resolvido o enigma. Sim, é verdade que faltava uma peça, mas não assumia a forma de tinta invisível ou de palavras significativas recortadas da página 13. Era, nas suas palavras, a forma como o livro revelara o narcisismo intrínseco dos seus recetores. – I Am A Strange Loop é disso que trata. – disse Deborah. Trata da forma como passamos a nossa vida a auto-referenciarmo-nos, uma e outra vez, numa espécie de estranho loop. Agora, há imensa gente a perguntar-se: «Porque fui eu selecionado para receber este livro?». Não se interrogam acerca do livro ou da mensagem. Só falam de si próprios. Por isso, O Ser Ou o Nada criou um estranho loop de pessoas e constitui o recipiente no interior do qual elas se podem auto-referenciar. – Fez uma pausa. – Acho que é essa a mensagem do Hofstadter. O Ser Ou o Nada, e a embalagem respetiva. Capa americana em paperback de I Am A Strange Loop. Era uma teoria sedutora, e continuei convencido de que poderia ser esta a solução para o enigma. Até ao momento, uma hora mais tarde, em que tive uma conversa em vídeo, no Skype, com Levi Shand. Este, rapidamente se me tornou patente, não era uma invenção de Douglas Hofstadter, mas um verdadeiro estudante da Universidade do Indiana. Era um jovem de cabelo negro, olhos melancólicos, e um quarto tremendamente desarrumado. Fora fácil de localizar. Eu enviara-lhe um e-mail através da sua página no Facebook. Ele respondera-me imediatamente (estava on-line, na altura) e ao fim de poucos segundos estávamos face a face. Disse-me que era tudo verdade. Encontrara de facto os livros numa caixa debaixo de um viaduto de caminho de ferro, e Douglas Hofstadter tinha de facto um harém de mulheres francesas em casa, vivendo com ele. – Diga-me exatamente o que aconteceu quando o visitou – pedi. – Eu estava mesmo nervoso – respondeu Levi –, dada a sua enorme fama no panorama da Teoria Cognitiva. Uma rapariga francesa muito bonita veio à porta. Disse-me para esperar. Olhei para a divisão seguinte e havia lá mais raparigas francesas lindíssimas. – Quantas, no total? – Havia pelo menos seis – respondeu ele. – Umas tinham cabelo castanho, outras louro, e estavam todas ali de pé, entre a cozinha e a sala de jantar. Todas incrivelmente belas. – Isso é de facto verdade? – inquiri. – Bem, pode ser que fossem belgas – respondeu Levi. – O que aconteceu então? – perguntei. – O professor Hofstadter saiu da cozinha – disse ele. – Era magro, mas com um ar saudável. Carismático. Pegou nos livros, agradeceu-me, e vim-me embora. Mais nada. – E isso é tudo verdade? – perguntei eu de novo. – Tudo verdade – retorquiu Levi. Mas algo não batia certo. A história de Levi e, na verdade, também a teoria de Deborah só funcionariam caso Hofstadter fosse um brincalhão diletante, amigo de pregar partidas, e nada do que eu encontrara sugeria tal possibilidade. Em 2007, por exemplo, Deborah Solomon, do New York Times, colocou-lhe algumas perguntas ligeiramente jocosas, e as respostas dele revelaram um homem sério e bastante impaciente: P.: Tornou-se pela primeira vez conhecido em 1979, quando publicou «Gödel, Escher, Bach», um clássico dos campus universitários, que descobre paralelismos entre os cérebros de Bach, M. C. Escher e o matemático Kurt Gödel. No seu livro «I Am a Strange Loop», parece fundamentalmente interessado no seu próprio cérebro. R.: Este livro é muito mais simples e directo. É menos louco. Menos ousado, porventura. P.: O senhor sabe mesmo promover um livro. R.: Bem, OK, não sei. Questões de consciência e da alma – foi isso que me motivou a escrever este livro. R.: Na entrada correspondente ao seu nome na Wikipedia, afirma-se que a sua obra inspirou muitos estudantes a iniciar carreiras na computação e na inteligência artificial. – Os computadores não me despertam qualquer interesse. Essa entrada está cheia de imprecisões e, de certa maneira, deprime-me. E assim sucessivamente. A obra de Hofstadter, fiquei a saber, era balizada por duas tragédias de cariz neurológico. Quando ele tinha doze anos, tornou-se claro que a sua irmã mais nova, Molly, era incapaz de falar ou de compreender linguagem: «Já na altura me interessava muito pela forma de funcionamento da minha mente», disse ele à revista Time em 2007. «Quando as provações de Molly se manifestaram, tudo começou a ficar ligado ao mundo físico. Éramos de facto obrigados a pensar no cérebro e no eu, e na forma como o cérebro determina quem é a pessoa. Depois, em 1993, a mulher, Carol, morreu subitamente com um tumor no cérebro. Os filhos tinham dois e cinco anos. Ficou esmagado pela dor. Em I Am A Strange Loop, consola-se com a ideia de ela perdurar no seu cérebro: «Acredito que há um traço do seu 'Eu', da sua interioridade, da sua luz interior, o que quer que se lhe queira chamar, que permanece dentro de mim», disse ele à Scientific American em 2007, «E o traço que permanece constitui um vestígio válido dela – a sua alma, se quiser. Tenho de realçar que o mais triste nisto tudo é, evidentemente, que o que quer que persiste dentro de mim não é senão uma ténue cópia dela. É uma versão reduzida, de baixa resolução, cheia de grão... é claro que não remove a marca da morte. Não diz: «Ah, bom, não faz mal ela ter morrido, porque vive lindamente no meu cérebro. Quem me dera que assim fosse. Mas, seja como for, é uma consolação.» Nada disto esboçava o retrato de um homem capaz de ter um harém de francesas e propensão para criar uma conspiração bizarra e complexa que implicasse mandar pelo correio dezenas de livros estranhos, anonimamente, a académicos de todo o mundo. Escrevi-lhe um e-mail, perguntando-lhe se a história de Levi Shand acerca da caixa debaixo da ponte e o harém de francesas era verdadeira, após o que fui dar um passeio. Quando voltei, tinha isto à minha espera na caixa de correio: «Caro Sr. Ronson: Não tenho nada a ver com O Ser Ou o Nada, com exceção do facto de ser nele mencionado. Sou apenas uma «vítima inocente» do projeto. É verdade que o Sr. Shand veio a minha casa entregar-me algumas cópias do estranho livro, mas o resto da sua história é totalmente inventado. A minha filha estava a ter aula de Francês com a sua tutora francesa, na sala de estar, pelo que é possível que o Sr. Shand tenha espiado as duas e ouvido falar em Francês. Além disso, falo Italiano em casa com os meus filhos, e é possível que o Sr. Shand tenha confundido o som do Italiano com o do Francês. Mas o que há a realçar é que não havia definitivamente nenhuma «casa cheia de belas mulheres francesas» – isso é puro disparate. Ele queria tornar a sua missão mais misteriosa e emocionante. É uma vergonha as pessoas fazerem esse tipo de coisas para de seguir as publicarem na Web. Cumprimentos, Douglas Hofstadter Respondi ao e-mail. Grande parte da história de Levi Shand não soava verdadeira, disse-lhe eu. Não apenas a questão do harém mas igualmente o relato de como encontrara a caixa debaixo do viaduto de caminho de ferro. Seria possível que fosse na verdade Levi Shand o autor de O Ser Ou o Nada ? Ele respondeu: Levi Shand não é, certamente, o autor do pequeno livro branco. Foram-me enviados pelo autor cerca de 80 exemplares (70 em Inglês, 10 em Sueco). Permanecem intocados no meu escritório. Antes da existência do livro, recebi uma série de postais extremamente crípticos escritos em sueco (li-os todos, embora sem grande cuidado, e nenhum deles fazia o mínimo sentido). As pessoas normais (isto é, sãs e sensatas) não tentam abrir linhas de comunicação com perfeitos desconhecidos escrevendo e enviando-lhes uma série de mensagens desconexas, bizarras e crípticas. A partir daí, tudo ficou ainda mais estranho: primeiro, foram-me enviados diversos exemplares do livro numa embalagem; alguns meses mais tarde, chegaram ao meu escritório cerca de oitenta exemplares; de seguida chegou-me aos ouvidos a bizarra alegação de que um maço de exemplares «fora encontrado debaixo de uma ponte» no meu campus; omeçaram então a chegar livros a diversas universidades de todo mundo, enviados a professores de determinadas disciplinas vagamente associadas à Inteligência Artificial, Biologia, etc. E depois vieram as palavras recortadas (super-estranho!) e a carta com colagens, dirigidas a mim. Tudo isto era completamente lunático. Teria muito mais a dizer sobre isto, mas falta-me o tempo. Tenho grande experiência de pessoas inteligentes mas desequilibradas, indivíduos que julgam ter descoberto a chave do universo, etc. Este caso, em particular, é extraordinariamente transparente por ser tão extraordinariamente obsessivo. Sim, faltava uma peça no enigma, dizia Douglas Hofstadter, mas as pessoas que haviam recebido o livro tinham percebido mal. Tinham presumido que o empreendimento era brilhante e racional pelo simples facto de serem elas próprias brilhantes e racionais e tendermos a presumir automaticamente que os outros são essencialmente semelhantes a nós. Na verdade, porém, a peça que faltava era o fato de o autor ser chalado. O livro não podia ser descodificado porque tinha sido escrito por um chalado. «Petter Nordlund?», pensei para comigo. Seria Petter Nordlund o único perpetrador? Parecia pouco provável que um homem tão bem sucedido – psiquiatra distinto, especialista em química proteica, o que quer que isso fosse, e assessor de uma empresa de biotecnologia especializada na descoberta e desenvolvimento de peptídeos terapêuticos, o que quer que isso fosse, acabasse por ser, nas palavras de Hofstadter, um «chalado extremamente obsessivo». Às sete da tarde desse dia, porém, vi-me face a face com ele, e tornou-se-me rapidamente óbvio que era ele de fato, o culpado. Era alto, na casa dos cinquenta anos, com um rosto atraente, e uma aparência geral de académico. Vestia um casaco de tweed. Estava à entrada da porta de sua casa, com a mulher a seu lado. Gostei dele imediatamente. Tinha um grande sorriso simpático mas críptico no rosto, e retorcia as mãos como um homem possuído. Eu próprio o faço frequentemente. Não pude deixar de pensar que, no que toca a ficar obcecado por coisas estúpidas sem importância, Petter e eu éramos provavelmente mais semelhantes que duas gotas de chuva. – Surpreende-me vê-lo aqui – disse Petter. – Espero que a surpresa não seja demasiado desagradável – respondi. Seguiu-se um curto silêncio. – Se estudou O Ser Ou o Nada – disse ele –, perceberá que nunca descobrirá o autor. – Eu acho que conheço o autor – repliquei. – Acho que é o senhor. – Isso é fácil de... – atalhou Petter. – Isso é demasiado fácil de dizer. – E além de fácil, é correto? – inquiri. – Evidentemente que não – respondeu ele. – Petter (e Petter Nordlund não é o seu nome verdadeiro, nem Lilly o da sua mulher) ergueu-se e baixou-se ligeiramente sobre os calcanhares. Estava a adotar a postura de um homem que tivesse recebido uma visita inesperada de um vizinho enquanto tinha alguma coisa ao lume. Mas apercebi-me de que o seu ar de distração amigável constituía uma máscara, sob a qual se detetava o enorme desconforto que a minha chegada lhe provocara. – Petter – disse eu. – Deixe-me pelo menos perguntar-lhe isto. Porque foram essas pessoas em particular escolhidas para receber o livro? Perante a minha pergunta, engoliu levemente em seco. O rosto iluminou-se-lhe, como se tivessem acabado de lhe fazer a mais maravilhosa das perguntas. – Bem...! – fez ele. – Como é que tu podes saber quem é que recebeu o livro? – interrompeu Lilly bruscamente com um tom duro na voz. – Tu só o traduziste. E com isso, o momento passou. O rosto de Petter assumiu de novo a máscara da distração polida. – Sim – corroborou ele. – Sim. Lamento imenso, mas vou ter de pôr um termo a isto... A minha intenção era simplesmente cumprimentar e voltar a entrar em casa. Já disse mais do que devia... Agora, fale com a minha mulher. Petter recuou então, sorridente, para a sombra da sua casa, e Lilly e eu olhámo-nos. – Agora vou para a Noruega – disse ela. – Adeus. – Adeus. E apanhei o avião de regresso a Londres. Aguardava-me um e-mail de Petter. «Você parece boa pessoa. O primeiro passo do projeto em breve estará concluído, e caberá a outros levá-lo ao nível seguinte. Se você desempenhará nisso ou não um papel, não sei – mas você saberá...» «Gostaria muito de desempenhar um papel se me der algum esclarecimento sobre como poderei fazê-lo», respondi, também por e-mail. «Bem, sabe, essa é a parte complicada, saber o que fazer», respondeu ele. «Chama-se a isso vida! Acredite, quando a sua hora chegar saberá.» Várias semanas passaram. A minha hora não chegou, ou, se chegou, não me apercebi. Finalmente, telefonei a Deborah e informei-a de que resolvera o mistério. Estava sentado no Starbucks, no Brunswick Centre de Russell Square, no centro de Londres, observando Deborah virar a esquina e caminhar apressadamente na minha direção. Sentou-se sorridente. – E então? – perguntou. – Bem... Contei-lhe as minhas conversas com Levi Shand e Douglas Hofstadter, as minhas reuniões com Petter e Lilly, e a subsequente troca de e-mails. Quando terminei, ela olhou-me e perguntou: «É só isso?» – Sim! – respondi. – Tudo isto aconteceu por o autor ser – na opinião do Hofstadter – um chalado. Estava toda a gente à procura da peça em falta no enigma, e afinal a peça em falta era isso. – Oh – respondeu ela. Parecia desapontada. – Mas não há razão para desapontamentos – disse eu. – Não está a ver? Isto é incrivelmente interessante. Já reparou na quantidade de ação que ocorreu pelo simples fato de algo ter corrido mal no cérebro de um homem? É como se o mundo racional, o seu mundo, fosse um lago plácido e o cérebro de Petter uma pedra angulosa, lançada sobre a sua superfície, criando uma série de estranhas ondulações por todo o lado. Subitamente, esta ideia excitou-me imensamente: a loucura de Petter Nordlund exercera uma enorme influência sobre o mundo. Recordei os tais psicólogos que afirmavam que eram os psicopatas que faziam o mundo girar. Diziam-no bem a sério: a sociedade constituía, segundo eles, uma expressão desse tipo específico de loucura. Subitamente, a loucura estava por todo o lado, e eu sentia-me determinado a aprender mais sobre o impacto que ela exercia sobre a forma como a sociedade evolui. Source text - English Chapter 0: EDG E ZERO: The Known Unknowns Everyone by nature desires to know. Aristotle, Metaphysics Science is king. Every week, headlines announce new breakthroughs in our understanding of the universe, new technologies that will transform our environment, new medical advances that will extend our lives. Science is giving us unprecedented insights into some of the big questions that have challenged humanity ever since we’ve been able to formulate those questions. Where did we come from? What is the ultimate destiny of the universe? What are the building blocks of the physical world? How does a collection of cells become conscious? In the last ten years alone we’ve landed a spaceship on a comet, made robots that can create their own language, used stem cells to repair the pancreas of diabetic patients, discovered how to use the power of thought alone to manipulate a robotic arm, sequenced the DNA of a 50,000-year-old cave girl. Science magazines are bursting with the latest breakthroughs emerging from the world’s laboratories. We know so much. The advances of science are extremely intoxicating. Science has given us our best weapon in our fight against fate. Instead of giving in to the ravages of disease and natural disaster, science has created vaccines to combat deadly viruses like polio and even ebola. Faced with an escalating world population, it is scientific advances that provide the best hope of feeding the 9.6 billion people who are projected to be alive in 2050. It is science that is warning us about the deadly impact we are having on our environment and giving us the chance to do something about it before it is too late. An asteroid might have wiped out the dinosaurs, but the science that humans have developed is our best shield against any future direct hits. In the human race’s constant battle with death, science is its best ally. Science is king not only when it comes to our fight for survival but also in improving our quality of life. We are able to communicate with friends and family across vast distances. We have unparalleled access to the database of knowledge we have accumulated over generations of investigation. We have created virtual worlds that we can escape to in our leisure time. We can recreate in our living rooms the great performances of Mozart, Miles and Metallica at the press of a button. That desire to know is programmed into the human psyche. Those early humans with a thirst for knowledge are those who have survived, adapted, transformed their environment. Those not driven by that craving were left behind. Evolution has favoured the mind that wants to know the secrets of how the universe works. The adrenaline rush that accompanies the discovery of new knowledge is nature’s way of telling us that the desire to know is as important as the drive to reproduce. As Aristotle articulated in the opening line of his book Metaphysics, understanding how the world works is a basic human need. As a schoolkid, science very quickly drew me into its outstretched arms. I fell in love with its extraordinary power to tell us so much about the universe. The fantastic stories that my science teachers told seemed even more fanciful than the fiction I’d been reading at home. As it worked its spell on me I consumed every outlet of science I could get my hands on. I persuaded my parents to buy me a subscription to New Scientist. I devoured Scientific American in our local library. I hogged the television each week to watch episodes of my favourite science programmes: Horizon and Tomorrow’s World. I was captivated by Jacob Bronowski’s Ascent of Man, Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, Jonathan Miller’s Body in Question. Every Christmas the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures provided a good dollop of science alongside our family tur key. My stocking was stuffed with books by Gamow and Feynman. It was a heady time, with new breakthroughs being announced each week. Alongside reading these stories of the discovery of things we know, I began to get more fired up by the untold tales. What we knew lay in the past but what we didn’t yet know was the future, my future. I became obsessed with the puzzle books of mathematician Martin Gardner that my maths teacher gave me. The excitement of wrestling with a conundrum and the sudden release of euphoria as I cracked each puzzle got me addicted to the drug of discovery. Those puzzles were my training ground for the greater challenge of tackling questions that didn’t have an answer in the back of the book. It was the unanswered questions, the mathematical mysteries and scientific puzzles that no one had cracked that would become the fuel for my life as a scientist. If I look back to the Seventies when I was at school and compare the things that we knew then to what we know now, it is quite extraordinary how much more we have understood about the universe even in the half century that I’ve been alive. Technology has extended our senses so we can see things that were beyond the conception of the scientists who excited me as a kid. The new range of telescopes that look out at the night sky have discovered planets like the Earth that could be home to intelligent life. They have revealed the amazing fact that three-quarters of the way into the lifetime of our universe the expansion of the universe started to accelerate. I remember reading as a kid that we were in for a big crunch, but now it seems that we have a completely different future waiting for us. The particle colliders like the Large Hadron Collider at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Switzerland) have allowed us to penetrate the inner workings of matter itself, revealing new particles – like the top quark discovered in 1994 and the Higgs boson discovered in 2012 – that were bits of speculative mathematics when I was reading my New Scientist at school. And since the early Nineties the fMRI scanner has allowed us to look inside the brain and discover things that in the Seventies were frankly not even considered part of the remit of scientists. The brain was the preserve of philosophers and theologians, but today the technology can reveal when you are thinking about Jennifer Aniston or predict what you are going to do next even before you know. Biology has seen an explosion of breakthroughs. In 2003 it was announced that scientists had mapped one whole human DNA sequence consisting of 3 billion letters of genetic code. In 2011 the complete neuronal network of the C. elegans worm was published, providing a complete picture of how the 302 neurons in the worm are connected. Chemists too have been breaking new territory. A totally new form of carbon was discovered in 1985, which binds together like a football, and chemists surprised us again in 2003 by creating the first examples of graphene, showing how carbon can form a honeycomb lattice one atom thick. And in my lifetime the subject to which I would eventually dedicate myself, mathematics, has seen some of the great enigmas finally resolved: Fermat’s Last Theorem and the Poincare conjecture, two challenges that had outfoxed generations of mathematicians. New mathematical tools and insights have opened up hidden pathways to navigate the mathematical universe. Keeping up with all these new advances, let alone making your own contribution, is a challenge in its own right. The know -it-all professorship A few years ago I got a new job title to add to my role as a professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford. It often makes me laugh: the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science. There seems to be a belief that with such a title I should know it all. People ring me up expecting that I know the answers to every question of science. Shortly after I’d taken on the job, the Nobel Prize for medicine was announced. A journalist called, hoping for an explanation of the breakthrough that was being rewarded: the discovery of telomeres. Biology has never been my strong point, but I was sitting in front of my computer screen and so I’m embarrassed to admit I got the Wikipedia page up on telomeres and, after a quick scan, proceeded to explain authoritatively that they are the bit of genetic code at the end of our chromosomes that controls ageing among other things. The technology we have at our fingertips has increased that sense that we have the potential to know anything. Just tap my question into a search engine and the device seems to predict, even before I’ve finished typing, what it is I want to know and provides a list of places to find the answer. But understanding is different from a list of facts. Is it possible for any scientist to know it all? To know how to solve non-linear partial differential equations? To know how SU(3) governs the connection between fundamental particles? To know how cosmological inflation gives rise to the state of the universe? To know how to solve Einstein’s equations of general relativity or Schrodinger’s wave equation? To know how neurons and synapses trigger thought? Newton, Leibniz and Galileo were perhaps the last scientists to know all that was known. I must admit that the arrogance of youth infused me with the belief that I could understand anything that was known. If someone’s human brain out there has found a way to navigate a path to new knowledge, then if the proof works in their brain it should work in mine. With enough time, I thought, I could crack the mysteries of mathematics and the universe, or at least master the current lie of the land. But increasingly I am beginning to question that belief, to worry that some things will forever remain beyond my reach. Often my brain struggles to navigate the science we currently know. Time is running out to know it all. My own mathematical research is already pushing the limits of what my human brain feels capable of understanding. I have been working for over ten years on a conjecture that remains stubbornly resistant to my attempts to crack it. But my new role as the Professor for the Public Understanding of Science has pushed me outside the comfort zone of mathematics into the messy concepts of neuroscience, the slippery ideas of philosophy, the unfounded theories of physics. It has required a different way of thinking that is alien to my mathematical mode of thought, which deals in certainties, proofs and precision. My attempts to understand everything that is currently regarded as scientific knowledge has severely tested the limits of my own ability to understand. The process of attaining knowledge necessarily relies on our standing on the shoulders of giants, as Newton famously declared about his own breakthroughs. And so my own journey to the edges of knowledge has involved reading how others have articulated the current state of knowledge, listening to lectures and seminars by those immersed in the field I’m trying to understand, talking to those pushing the boundaries, questioning contradictory stories, consulting the evidence and data recorded in the scientific journals that support a theory, even at times looking up an idea on Wikipedia. Although we teach students to question any information that pops up from a Google search, research has revealed that Wikipedia’s accounts of topics at the less controversial end of the scientific spectrum, like the theory of general relativity, are regarded as on a par with accounts in the scientific literature. Choose a more contested issue, like climate change, and the content might depend on what day you look. This raises the question of how much can you trust any of these stories. Just because the scientific community accepts a story as the current best fit, this doesn’t mean it is true. Time and again, history reveals the opposite to be the case, and this must always act as a warning that current scientific knowledge is provisional. Mathematics perhaps has a slightly different quality, as I will discuss in the final two chapters. Mathematical proof provides the chance to establish a more permanent state of knowledge. But it’s worth noting that even when I am creating new mathematics, I will often quote results by fellow mathematicians whose proofs I won’t have checked myself. To do so would mean running in order to keep still. And for any scientist the real challenge is not to stay within the secure garden of the known but to venture out into the wilds of the unknown. That is the challenge at the heart of this book. Despite all the breakthroughs made in science over the last centuries, there are still lots of deep mysteries waiting out there for us to solve. Things we don’t know. The knowledge of what we are ignorant of seems to expand faster than our catalogue of breakthroughs. The known unknowns outstrip the known knowns. And it is those unknowns that drive science. A scientist is more interested in the things he or she can’t understand than in telling all the stories we already know how to narrate. Science is a living, breathing subject because of all those questions we can’t answer. For example, the stuff that makes up the physical universe we interact with seems to account for only 4.9% of the total matter content of our universe. So what is the other 95.1% of so-called dark matter and dark energy made up of? If our universe’s expansion is accelerating, where is all the energy coming from that is fuelling that acceleration? Is our universe infinite? Are there infinitely many other infinite universes parallel to our own? If there are, do they have different laws of physics? Were there other universes before our own universe emerged from the Big Bang? Did time exist before the Big Bang? Does time exist at all or does it emerge as a consequence of more fundamental concepts? Why is there a layer of fundamental particles with another two almost identical copies of this layer but with increasing mass, the so-called three generations of fundamental particles? Are there yet more particles out there for us to discover? Are fundamental particles actually tiny strings vibrating in 11-dimensional space? How can we unify Einstein’s theory of general relativity, the physics of the very large, with quantum physics, the physics of the very small? This is the search for something called quantum gravity, an absolute necessity if we are ever going to understand the Big Bang, when the universe was compressed into the realm of the quantum. And what of the understanding of our human body, something so complex that it makes quantum physics look like a high-school exercise. We are still trying to get to grips with the complex interaction between gene expression and our environment. Can we find a cure for cancer? Is it possible to beat ageing? Could there be someone alive today who will live to be a 1000 years old? And what about where humans came from? Evolution is a process of random mutations, so would a different roll of the evolutionary dice still produce organisms with eyes? If we rewound evolution and pressed ‘play’, would we get intelligent life, or are we the result of a lucky roll of the dice? Is there intelligent life elsewhere in our universe? And what of the technology we are creating? Can a computer ever attain consciousness? Will I eventually be able to download my consciousness so that I can survive the death of my body? Mathematics too is far from finished. Despite popular belief, Fermat’s Last Theorem was not the last theorem. Mathematical unknowns abound. Are there any patterns in prime numbers or are they outwardly random? Will we be able to solve the mathematical equations for turbulence? Will we ever understand how to factorize large numbers efficiently? Despite so much that is still unknown, scientists are optimistic that these questions won’t remain unanswered forever. The last few decades give us reason to believe that we are in a golden age of science. The rate of discoveries in science appears to grow exponentially. In 2014 the science journal Nature reported that the number of scientific papers published has been doubling every nine years since the end of the Second World War. Computers too are developing at an exponential rate. Moore’s law is the observation that computer processing power seems to double every two years. Engineer Ray Kurzwell believes that the same applies to technological progress: that the rate of change of technology over the next 100 years will be comparable to what we’ve experienced in the last 20,000 years. And yet can scientific discoveries maintain this exponential growth? Kurzwell talks about the Singularity, a moment when the intelligence of our technology will exceed our human intelligence. Is scientific progress destined for its own singularity? A moment when we know it all. Surely at some point we might actually discover the underlying equations that explain how the universe works. We will discover the final list of particles that make up the building blocks of the physical universe and how they interact with each other. Some scientists believe that the current rate of scientific progress will lead to a moment when we might discover a theory of everything. They even give it a name: ToE. As Hawking declared in A Brief History of Time: ‘I believe there are grounds for cautious optimism that we may be near the end of the search for the ultimate laws of nature’, concluding dramatically with the provocative statement that then ‘we would know the mind of God’. Is such a thing possible? To know everything? Would we want to know everything? Science would ossify. Scientists have a strangely schizophrenic relationship with the unknown. On the one hand, it is what we don’t know that intrigues and fascinates us, and yet the mark of success as a scientist is resolution and knowledge, to make the unknown known. Could there be some quests that will never be resolved? Are there limits to what we can discover about our physical universe? Are some regions of the future beyond the predictive powers of science and mathematics? Is time before the Big Bang a no-go area? Are there ideas so complex that they are beyond the conception of our finite human brains? Can brains even investigate themselves, or does the analysis enter an infinite loop from which it is impossible to rescue itself? Are there mathematical conjectures that can never be proved true? What we’ll never know What if there are questions of science that can never be resolved? It seems defeatist, even dangerous, to admit there may be any such questions. While the unknown is the driving force for doing science, the unknowable would be science’s nemesis. As a fully signed-up member of the scientific community, I hope that we can ultimately answer the big open questions. So it seems important to know if the expedition I’ve joined will hit boundaries beyond which we cannot proceed. Questions that won’t ever get closure. That is the challenge I’ve set myself in this book. I want to know if there are things that by their very nature we will never know. Are there things that will always be beyond the limits of knowledge? Despite the marauding pace of scientific advances, are there things that will remain beyond the reach of even the greatest scientists? Will there remain mysteries that will resist our attempts to lift the veils that currently mask our view of the universe? It is, of course, very risky at any point in history to try to articulate Things We Cannot Know. How can you know what new insights are suddenly going to pull the unknown into the knowable? This is partly why it is useful to look at the history of how we know the things we do, because it reveals how often we’ve been at points where we think we have hit the frontier, only to find some way across. Take the statement made by French philosopher Auguste Comte in 1835 about the stars: ‘We shall never be able to study, by any method, their chemical composition or their mineralogical structure.’ An absolutely fair statement given that this knowledge seemed to depend on our visiting the star. What Comte hadn’t factored in was the possibility that the star could visit us, or at least that photons of light emitted by the star could reveal its chemical make-up. A few decades after Comte’s prophecy, scientists had determined the chemical composition of our own star, the Sun, by analysing the spectrum of light emitted. As the nineteenth-century British astronomer Warren de la Rue declared: ‘If we were to go to the Sun, and to bring some portions of it and analyse them in our laboratories, we could not examine them more accurately than we can by this new mode of spectrum analysis.’ Scientists went on to determine the chemical composition of stars we are unlikely ever to visit. As science in the nineteenth century continued to give us an ever greater understanding of the mysteries of the universe, there began to emerge a feeling that we might eventually have a complete picture. In 1900 Lord Kelvin, regarded by many as one of the greatest scientists of his age, believed that moment had come when he declared to the meeting of the British Association of Science: ‘There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now. All that remains is more and more precise measurement.’ American physicist Albert Abraham Michelson concurred. He too thought that the future of science would simply consist of adding a few decimal places to the results already obtained. ‘The more important fundamental laws and facts of physical science have all been discovered . . . our future discoveries must be looked for in the sixth place of decimals.’ Five years later Einstein announced his extraordinary new conception of time and space, followed shortly after by the revelations of quantum physics. Kelvin and Michelson couldn’t have been more wrong about how much new physics there was still to discover. What I want to try to explore is whether there are problems that we can prove will remain beyond knowledge despite any new insights. Perhaps there are none. As a scientist that is my hope. One of the dangers when faced with currently unanswerable problems is to give in too early to their unknowability. But if there are unanswerables, what status do they have? Can you choose from the possible answers and it won’t really matter which one you opt for? Talk of known unknowns is not reserved to the world of science. The US politician Donald Rumsfeld strayed into the philosophy of knowledge with the famous declaration: There are known knowns; there are things that we know that we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don’t know we don’t know. Rumsfeld received a lot of stick for this cryptic response to a question fired at him during a briefing at the Department of Defense about the lack of evidence connecting the government of Iraq with weapons of mass destruction. Journalists and bloggers had a field day, culminating in Rumsfeld being given the Foot in Mouth award by the Plain English Campaign. And yet if one unpicks the statement, Rumsfeld very concisely summed up different types of knowledge. He perhaps missed one interesting category: The unknown knowns. The things that you know yet dare not admit to knowing. As the philosopher Slavoj Zizek argues, these are possibly the most dangerous, especially when held by those with political power. This is the domain of delusion. Repressed thoughts. The Freudian unconscious. I would love to tell you about the unknown unknowns, but then they’d be known! Nassim Taleb, author of The Black Swan, believes that it is the emergence of these that are responsible for the biggest changes in society. For Kelvin it was relativity and quantum physics that turned out to be the unknown unknown that he was unable to conceive of. So in this book I can at best try to articulate the known unknowns and ask whether any will remain forever unknown. Are there questions that by their very nature will always be unanswerable, regardless of progress in knowledge? I have called these unknowns ‘Edges’. They represent the horizon beyond which we cannot see. My journey to the Edges of knowledge to articulate the known unknowns will pass through the known knowns that demonstrate how we have travelled beyond what we previously thought were the limits of knowledge. This journey will also test my own ability to know, because it’s becoming increasingly challenging as a scientist to know even the knowns. As much as this book is about what we cannot know, it is also important to understand what we do know and how we know it. My journey to the limits of knowledge will take me through the terrain that scientists have already mapped, to the very limits of today’s cutting edge breakthroughs. On the way I will stop to consider those moments when scientists thought they had hit a wall beyond which progress was no longer possible, only for the next generation to find a way, and this will give us an important perspective on those problems that we might think are unknowable today. By the end of our journey I hope this book will provide a comprehensive survey not just of what we cannot know but also of the things we do know. To help me through those areas of science that are outside my comfort zone, I have enlisted the help of experts to guide me as I reach each science’s Edge and to test whether it is my own limitations, or limitations inherent in the questions I am tackling, that make them unknowable. What happens then if we encounter a question that cannot be answered? How does one cope with not knowing? Dare I admit to myself that some things will forever remain beyond my reach? How do we as a species cope with not knowing? That is a challenge that has elicited some interesting responses from humans across the millennia, not least the creation of an idea called God. Transcendence There is another reason why I have been driven to investigate the unknowable, which is also related to my new job. The previous incumbent of the chair for the Public Understanding of Science was a certain Richard Dawkins. When I took over the position from Dawkins I braced myself for the onslaught of questions that I would get, not about science, but about religion. The publication of The God Delusion and his feisty debates with creationists resulted in Dawkins spending a lot of the later years of his tenure debating questions of religion and God. So it was inevitable that when I took up the chair people would be interested in my stance on religion. My initial reaction was to put some distance between myself and the debate about God. My job was to promote scientific progress, and to engage the public in the breakthroughs happening around them. I was keen to move the debate back to questions of science rather than religion. As a strategy to deflect the God questions I actually admitted that I was in fact a religious man. Before journalists got too excited, I went on to explain that my religion is the Arsenal. My temple is the Emirates (it used to be Highbury Stadium) in north London, and each Saturday I worship my idols and sing songs to them. And at the beginning of each season I reaffirm my faith that this will be the year we finally win some silverware. In an urban environment like London, football has taken over the role that religion played in society of binding a community together, providing rituals that they can share. For me, the science that I began to learn as a teenager did a pretty good job of pushing out any vaguely religious thoughts I had had as a kid. I sang in my local church choir, which exposed me to the ideas that Christianity had to offer for understanding the universe. School education in the Seventies in the UK was infused with mildly religious overtones: renditions of ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ and the Lord’s Prayer in assemblies. Religion was dished up as something too simplistic to survive the sophisticated and powerful stories that I would learn in the science labs at my secondary school. Religion was quickly pushed out. Science . . . and football . . . were much more attractive. Inevitably the questions about my stance on religion would not be fobbed off with such a flippant answer. I remember that during one radio interview on a Sunday morning on BBC Northern Ireland I was gradually sucked into considering the question of the existence of God. I guess I should have seen the warning signs. On a Sunday morning in Northern Ireland, God isn’t far from the minds of many listeners. As a mathematician I am often faced with the challenge of proving the existence of new structures or coming up with arguments to show why such structures cannot exist. The power of the mathematical language to produce logical arguments has led a number of philosophers throughout the ages to resort to mathematics as a way of proving the existence of God. But I always have a problem with such an approach. If you are going to prove existence or otherwise in mathematics, you need a very clear definition of what it is that you are trying to prove exists. So after some badgering by the interviewer about my stance on the existence of God, I pushed him to try to define what God meant for him so that I could engage my mathematical mind. ‘It is something which transcends human understanding.’ At first I thought: what a cop-out. You have just defined it as something which by its very nature I can’t get a handle on. But I became intrigued by this as a definition. Perhaps it wasn’t such a cop-out after all. What if you define God as the things we cannot know. The gods in many ancient cultures were always a placeholder for the things we couldn’t explain or couldn’t understand. Our ancestors found volcanic eruptions or eclipses so mysterious that they became acts of gods. As science has explained such phenomena, these gods have retreated. This definition has some things in common with a God commonly called the ‘God of the gaps’. This phrase was generally used as a derogatory term by religious thinkers who could see that this God was shrinking in the face of the onslaught of scientific knowledge, and a call went out to reject this kind of God. The phrase ‘God of the gaps’ was coined by the Oxford mathematician and Methodist church leader Charles Coulson, when he declared: ‘There is no “God of the gaps” to take over at those strategic places where science fails.’ But the phrase is also associated with a fallacious argument for the existence of God, one that Richard Dawkins spends some time shooting down in The God Delusion: if there are things that we can’t explain or know, there must be a God at work filling the gap. But I am more interested not in the existence of a God to fill the gap, but in equating God with the abstract idea of the things we cannot know. Not in the things we currently don’t know, but the things that by their nature we can never know. The things that will always remain transcendent. Religion is more complex than the simple stereotype often offered up by modern society. For many ancient cultures in India, China and the Middle East, religion was not about worshipping a Supernatural Intelligence but precisely the attempt to appreciate the limits of our understanding and language. As the theologian Herbert McCabe declared: ‘To assert the existence of God is to claim that there is an unanswered question about the universe.’ Science has pushed hard at those limits. So is there anything left? Will there be anything that will always be beyond the limit. Does McCabe’s God exist? This is the quest at the heart of this book. Can we identify questions or physical phenomena that will always remain beyond knowledge? If we can identify things that will remain in the gaps of knowledge, then what sort of God is this? What potency would such a concept have? Could the things we cannot know act in the world and affect our futures? Are they worthy of worship? But first we need to know if in fact there is anything that will remain unanswered about the universe. Is there really anything we cannot know? Todas as semanas, os títulos dos jornais anunciam novas descobertas que aperfeiçoarão a nossa compreensão do Universo, novas tecnologias que transformarão o nosso ambiente, novos avanços na medicina que prolongarão a nossa vida. A ciência proporciona-nos um conhecimento sem precedentes sobre algumas das grandes questões que desafiam a Humanidade desde que conseguimos formulá-las. De onde viemos? Qual o destino último do Universo? Quais os elementos básicos constituintes do mundo físico? De que modo um conjunto de células adquire consciência? Só na última década, fizemos pousar uma nave espacial sobre um cometa, desenvolvemos robôs capazes de criarem a sua própria linguagem, utilizámos células estaminais para efectuar reparações no pâncreas de doentes diabéticos, descobrimos como utilizar o simples poder do pensamento para manipular um braço robótico e sequenciámos o ADN de uma menina das cavernas com 50 000 anos de idade. As revistas especializadas rebentam pelas costuras com a divulgação das últimas descobertas ocorridas nos laboratórios de todo o mundo. Sabemos tanta coisa. Os avanços científicos são verdadeiramente inebriantes. A ciência proporcionou-nos a melhor arma na luta contra o destino. Em vez de ceder às devastações provocadas pela doença e os desastres naturais, criou vacinas capazes de combater vírus letais como o da poliomielite, ou mesmo do ébola. Confrontados com uma escalada da população mundial, é nos avanços científicos que residem as nossas melhores esperanças de alimentar 9,6 mil milhões de pessoas que se estima irem habitar o planeta em 2050. É a ciência que nos adverte contra o impacte mortífero que estamos a exercer sobre o nosso ambiente e nos oferece a oportunidade de fazer algo enquanto não é demasiado tarde. Dispomos de acesso sem paralelo à base de dados de conhecimentos que acumulámos ao longo de gerações e gerações de investigação. Criámos mundos virtuais para os quais nos podemos escapar no nosso tempo livre. Podemos recriar na nossa sala de estar as melhores execuções das obras de Mozart, Miles Davis e Metallica, através do simples premir de um botão. Este desejo de conhecer está programado na psique humana. Os primeiros seres humanos dotados de sede de conhecimento foram os que sobreviveram, se adaptaram e transformaram o seu ambiente. Aqueles que não possuíam esta ânsia de conhecer foram deixados para trás. A evolução favoreceu a mente que quer conhecer os segredos do funcionamento do Universo. O fluxo de adrenalina que acompanha a descoberta de novos conhecimentos é a forma de a Natureza nos dizer que o desejo de saber é tão importante como o impulso para nos reproduzirmos. Como disse Aristóteles na frase de abertura do seu livro Metafísica, perceber como funciona o mundo constitui uma necessidade humana básica. Quando andava na escola, a ciência muito rapidamente me estendeu os seus braços abertos. Apaixonei-me pelo seu poder extraordinário de nos dizer tanto acerca do Universo. Parecia haver mais fantasia nas histórias que me contavam os meus professores de ciências do que nos livros de ficção que eu lia em casa. À medida que lançava sobre mim o seu feitiço, eu consumia todas as fontes de ciência a que conseguia deitar a mão. Persuadi os meus pais a oferecerem-me a assinatura da revista New Scientist, devorei a Scientific American na biblioteca da minha zona. Agarrava-me todas as semanas à televisão para ver os episódios dos meus programas científicos preferidos: Horizon e Tomorrow's World. Deixei-me cativar por Ascent of Man, de Jacob Bronowski, Cosmos, de Carl Sagan e Body in Question, de Jonathan Miller. Todos os Natais as palestras Royal Institution Christmas Lectures me ofereciam grandes colheradas de ciência a par do peru da quadra. Tinha o sapatinho cheio de livros de George Gamow e Richard Feynman. Eram tempos inebriantes em que novas descobertas eram anunciadas todas as semanas. A par da leitura destas histórias de descobertas das coisas que conhecíamos, comecei a entusiasmar-me cada vez mais pelas histórias ainda por contar. Aquilo que sabíamos residia no passado, mas o que não conhecíamos era o futuro, o meu futuro. Fiquei obcecado com os livros de enigmas do matemático Martin Gardner que o meu professor de matemática me ofereceu. A excitação de me debater com uma charada e a súbita libertação de euforia de cada vez que desvendava um enigma criou-me a dependência da droga da descoberta. Aqueles enigmas foram o meu campo de treino para os desafios maiores de como lidar com as questões cujas respostas não vinham no final do livro. Foram as questões por responder, os mistérios matemáticos e os enigmas científicos que ninguém conseguira resolver que se transformaram no combustível da minha vida de cientista. O QUE SABEMOS Se olhar em retrospectiva para os anos 70, quando andava na escola, e comparar o que então sabíamos com o que sabemos hoje, é extraordinário verificar quantas coisas mais ficámoa a saber sobre o Universo apenas no meio século da minha vida. A tecnologia ampliou os nossos sentidos e permite-nos ver coisas que superavam a capacidade de idealização dos cientistas que me entusiasmavam em miúdo. A nova gama de telescópios que perscrutam o céu nocturno permitiu-nos descobrir planetas semelhantes à Terra, capazes de acolher vida inteligente. Esses telescópios revelaram-nos o facto surpreendente de, a uns três quartos do tempo de vida do nosso Universo, a expansão deste ter começado a acelerar. Lembro-me de ler, em miúdo, que nos esperava um Big Crunch, isto é, uma gigantesca compressão; mas parece, agora, que nos espera um futuro completamente diferente. Os aceleradores de partículas como o Grande Acelerador de Hadrões do CERN (a Organização Europeia para a Investigação Nuclear, sediada na Suíça) permitiram-nos penetrar nos mecanismos íntimos da própria matéria, revelando-nos novas partículas – como por exemplo o top quark descoberto em 1994 e o bosão de Higgs descoberto em 2012 – que constituíam fragmentos de matemática especulativa quando eu lia sobre eles na minha New Scientist. Desde o início dos anos 90 que o scanner fMRI (imagiologia de ressonância magnética funcional) nos permitiu espreitar para o interior do cérebro e descobrir coisas que nos anos 70 não eram sequer consideradas da competência dos cientistas. O cérebro era então território exclusivo de filósofos e teólogos; actualmente a tecnologia pode revelar o que estamos a pensar acerca da Jennifer Aniston ou prever o que vamos fazer antes mesmo de nós próprios o sabermos. A biologia assistiu a uma explosão de descobertas. Em 2003, foi anunciado que os cientistas tinham cartografado uma sequência inteira de ADN humano, a qual consistia em 3 mil milhões de letras de código genético. Em 2011, a totalidade da rede neuronal do verme C. elegans foi publicada, proporcionando-nos uma imagem completa do modo como estão interligados os 302 neurónios do animal. Também os químicos desbravam novo território. Uma forma de carbono totalmente nova foi descoberta em 1985. A sua estrutura mantém-se coesa de forma semelhante à de uma bola de futebol. Os químicos voltaram a surpreender-nos em 2003 ao criarem os primeiros exemplos de grafeno, mostrando-nos como o carbono consegue formar uma malha semelhante à dos favos de uma colmeia, com um átomo de espessura. Ao longo do meu tempo de vida, o tema ao qual haveria de me dedicar, a Matemática, assistiu por fim à resolução de alguns dos maiores enigmas de sempre: o Último Teorema de Fermat e a conjectura de Poincaré, dois desafios cuja resolução escapara a inúmeras gerações de matemáticos. Novas ferramentas e perspectivas matemáticas abriram-nos caminhos até aí ocultos para navegarmos o universo matemático. Mantermo-nos a par de todos estes novos avanços científicos, já não falando em darmos o nosso próprio contributo, constitui por si só um enorme desafio. A CÁTEDRA DA OMNISCIÊNCIA Recebi há alguns anos um novo título académico a acrescentar ao meu cargo de professor de Matemática da Universidade de Oxford. É frequente a designação dar-me vontade de rir: Professor Simonyi para a Compreensão Pública da Ciência. Parece haver a ideia de que, munido de tal título, devo saber tudo sobre tudo. Há quem me telefone à espera de que eu conheça todas as respostas para todas as questões científicas. Por exemplo, pouco depois de ter tomado posse, deu-se o anúncio do Prémio Nobel da Medicina. Ligou-me então um jornalista que esperava de mim uma explicação do avanço científico que justificara o galardão. A descoberta dos telómeros. A biologia nunca foi o meu forte, mas, como estava então sentado à frente do computador, tenho de confessar com algum embaraço que abri a página da Wikipédia para procurar informação sobre telómeros. Após uma breve busca, afirmei cheio de autoridade que são o trecho de código genético que se situa na extremidade dos nossos cromossomas e controla, entre outras coisas, o processo de envelhecimento. A tecnologia que temos na ponta dos dedos aumentou essa sensação de dispormos do potencial para conhecer seja o que for. Só temos de inserir a questão no motor de busca e o dispositivo parece prever, antes mesmo de termos acabado de digitar a pergunta, o que queremos saber, fornecendo-nos uma lista de locais onde encontrar a resposta pretendida. Compreender, porém, é diferente de dispor de uma lista de factos. Será possível a um cientista saber tudo sobre tudo? Saber resolver equações diferenciais parciais não lineares? Saber de que forma o grupo especial unitário SU(3) rege a ligação entre partículas fundamentais? Saber de que forma a inflação cosmológica gera o estado do Universo? Saber resolver as equações da relatividade geral de Einstein, ou a equação de onda de Schrödinger? Saber de que forma os neurónios e as sinapses desencadeiam o pensamento? Newton, Leibniz e Galileu foram porventura os últimos cientistas a saber tudo o que era conhecido à época. Tenho de admitir que a arrogância da juventude infundiu em mim a crença de poder compreender tudo o que é conhecido. Se o cérebro de alguém descobriu uma forma de navegar rumo a novo conhecimento, então, se a demonstração funcionou no cérebro dessa pessoa, deverá funcionar igualmente no meu. Dispondo do tempo suficiente, pensava eu para mim, seria capaz de decifrar os mistérios da matemática e do Universo, ou, ao menos, dominar os conhecimentos actuais sobre o tema. Cada vez mais, porém, dou por mim a questionar essa crença, e preocupa-me cada vez mais, também, a possibilidade de haver coisas que permanecerão eternamente fora do meu alcance. O meu cérebro luta frequentemente por percorrer os caminhos da ciência que actualmente conhecemos. Mas há cada vez menos tempo para saber tudo. A minha própria investigação matemática está já a atingir os limites daquilo que o meu cérebro humano parece capaz de compreender. Trabalho há mais de dez anos numa conjectura que permanece teimosamente resistente às minhas tentativas de a decifrar. Mas o meu novo cargo de Professor para a Compreensão Pública da Ciência pressionou-me para fora da zona de conforto da Matemática, fazendo-me penetrar nos conceitos mais complexos das neurociências, nas ideias incertas da Filosofia, nas teorias não fundamentadas da Física. Exigiu-me uma forma distinta de pensar que é estranha ao meu modo matemático de raciocinar, que lida com certezas, demonstrações e precisão. As minhas tentativas de compreender tudo o que é actualmente tido por conhecimento científico puseram severamente à prova os limites da minha própria capacidade de compreender. O processo de alcançar conhecimento sustenta-se necessariamente em pormo-nos de pé sobre os ombros de gigantes, para utilizar a descrição que Newton fez das suas próprias descobertas. Por isso, a minha própria viagem aos limites do conhecimento obrigou-me a ler o que outros declararam sobre o estado actual do saber, a ouvir palestras e seminários por parte dos que estão imersos no campo científico que estou a tentar compreender, a falar com os que alargam fronteiras, a questionar histórias contraditórias, a consultar os indícios e dados registados nas publicações científicas que sustentam determinada teoria, e mesmo, por vezes, a consultar ideias na Wikipédia. Muito embora ensinemos os alunos a questionar qualquer informação que surja de uma pesquisa no Google, a verdade é que a investigação revelou que a informação publicada na Wikipédia sobre temas situados no extremo menos controverso do espectro científico, como por exemplo a teoria da relatividade geral, são consideradas a par da informação publicada na literatura científica. Se, porém, optarmos por consultar um tema mais controverso, como por exemplo as alterações climáticas, o conteúdo poderá depender do dia da consulta. Isto levanta a questão do grau de confiança que nos podem inspirar estes relatos. O simples facto de a comunidade científica aceitar que determinada narrativa é a que melhor se ajusta actualmente aos factos não faz dela necessariamente verdadeira. Vezes sem conta, a História revela-nos que é o contrário que acontece, o que deve sempre servir-nos de advertência para o facto de todo o conhecimento científico actual ter uma natureza provisória. A Matemática possuirá, porventura, uma natureza ligeiramente diferente, como proporei nos últimos dois capítulos deste livro. A demonstração matemática oferece-nos a possibilidade de consolidar um estado mais permanente de conhecimento. Mas vale a pena notar que, mesmo quando estou a criar nova matemática, é frequente citar resultados de colegas matemáticos cujas demonstrações não verifiquei pessoalmente. Fazê-lo significaria correr sem sair do mesmo sítio. Além disso, para qualquer cientista, o verdadeiro desafio não é o de permanecer no seio do jardim seguro do que é conhecido, mas antes aventurar-se no território ainda não palmilhado do desconhecido. Esse é o desafio que o leitor encontrará no âmago deste livro. O QUE NÃO SABEMOS Não obstante todos os progressos realizados pela ciência ao longo dos últimos séculos, existe ainda uma imensidão de mistérios profundos à espera de os resolvermos. Coisas que não conhecemos. O conhecimento daquilo que ignoramos parece expandir-se mais depressa do que o nosso catálogo de avanços. Os desconhecidos que conhecemos superam os conhecidos que conhecemos. E são esses desconhecidos que fazem andar a ciência. Um cientista está mais interessado nas coisas que não consegue compreender do que em contar todas as histórias que já sabemos relatar. A ciência é matéria que vive e respira devido a todas essas questões a que não sabemos dar resposta. Por exemplo, a substância que constitui o universo físico com o qual interagimos parece representar apenas 4,9% do conteúdo total de matéria do nosso universo. De que são feitos, então, os restantes 95,1% das chamadas matéria negra e energia negra? E se a expansão do nosso universo está em vias de acelerar, de onde vem toda a energia que alimenta essa aceleração? Será o nosso universo infinito? Haverá um número infinito de outros universos infinitos paralelos ao nosso? E se houver, possuirão diferentes leis da física? Será que houve outros universos antes de o nosso ter surgido a partir do Big Bang? Será que o tempo existia antes do Big Bang? Será que o tempo existe de todo, ou derivará de conceitos mais fundamentais? Por que razão existe uma camada de partículas fundamentais a par de outras duas cópias quase idênticas a essa, mas com maior massa, as chamadas três gerações de partículas fundamentais? Haverá ainda mais partículas a descobrir? Serão as partículas fundamentais, na verdade, minúsculas cordas a vibrar num espaço 11-dimensional? Como podemos unificar a teoria da relatividade geral de Einstein – a física do muito grande – com a física quântica, a física do muito pequeno? Esta é a busca de algo que se designa por gravidade quântica, uma necessidade absoluta se quisermos alguma vez conseguir compreender o Big Bang, o momento em que o Universo foi comprimido até ao domínio do quantum. E que dizer da compreensão do nosso corpo humano, algo de tão complexo que faz a física quântica parecer-se com um exercício de liceu? Estamos ainda a tentar aprender a lidar com a interacção complexa entre a expressão dos genes e o nosso ambiente circundante. Poderemos encontrar uma cura para o cancro? Será possível vencer o envelhecimento? Haverá alguém vivo hoje em dia que vá conseguir viver até aos mil anos de idade? E quanto à questão de saber de onde vieram os seres humanos? Se a evolução é um processo constituído por mutações aleatórias, será que um lançamento diferente dos dados evolutivos produziria ainda assim organismos dotados de olhos? Se rebobinássemos a evolução e carregássemos em «play», obteríamos vida inteligente, ou somos simplesmente o resultado de um lançamento afortunado dos dados? Haverá vida inteligente em qualquer outra paragem do nosso universo? E quanto à tecnologia que estamos a criar, poderá um computador alguma vez alcançar consciência? Poderei eu algum dia fazer o download da minha consciência de modo a conseguir sobreviver à morte do meu corpo? Também a Matemática está longe de acabada. Não obstante a crença popular, o Último Teorema de Fermat não foi o último teorema. Os desconhecidos matemáticos abundam. Haverá alguns padrões nos números primos, ou serão completamente aleatórios? Alguma vez conseguiremos resolver as equações matemáticas relativas à turbulência? Alguma vez saberemos factorizar eficazmente números muito grandes? Apesar de tudo o que é ainda desconhecido, os cientistas estão optimistas e acreditam que estas questões não permanecerão para sempre sem resposta. As últimas décadas dão-nos razões para acreditar que atravessamos uma era dourada da ciência. O ritmo das novas descobertas científicas parece crescer exponencialmente. Em 2014, a revista científica Nature observava que o número de artigos científicos publicados tem vindo a duplicar de nove em nove anos desde o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Também os computadores se desenvolvem a um ritmo exponencial. A lei de Moore consiste na observação de que a capacidade de processamento dos computadores parece duplicar de dois em dois anos. O engenheiro Ray Kurzwell é de opinião que o mesmo se aplica ao processo tecnológico – que o ritmo de mudança tecnológica ao longo dos próximos cem anos será comparável àquilo que experimentámos ao longo dos últimos 20 000 anos. Podem as descobertas científicas, porém, manter este crescimento exponencial? Kurzwell fala da Singularidade, o momento no qual a inteligência da nossa tecnologia excederá a nossa inteligência humana. Estará o progresso científico destinado a rumar à sua própria singularidade – o momento em que saberemos tudo? Seguramente, a partir de determinado momento, poderíamos descobrir de facto as equações subjacentes que explicam o modo de funcionamento do Universo. Descobriremos a lista final de partículas que são os elementos constituintes do Universo e de que forma interagem entre si. Alguns cientistas estão convencidos de que a actual taxa de progresso científico nos conduzirá a um momento em que poderemos descobrir uma teoria de tudo. Chegaram mesmo a baptizá-la: TdT. Como declarou Stephen Hawking em Uma Breve História do Tempo – «Acredito haver razões para um optimismo prudente, e para acharmos que podemos estar perto do fim da busca das leis últimas da Natureza», concluindo de forma dramática com a afirmação provocadora de que, então, «conheceríamos a mente de Deus». Será isso possível? Conhecer tudo? E quereríamos conhecer tudo? A ciência ossificaria. Os cientistas têm uma relação estranhamente esquizofrénica com o desconhecido. Por um lado, é aquilo que não conhecemos que nos fascina e intriga; por outro lado, a marca do sucesso de um cientista é a resolução e o conhecimento – é tornar conhecido o desconhecido. Poderá haver algumas buscas que nunca venham a ser bem-sucedidas? Haverá limites àquilo que podemos descobrir sobre o nosso universo físico? Haverá algumas regiões do futuro que se situem para lá dos poderes preditivos da ciência e da matemática? Será o tempo anterior ao Big Bang uma zona inacessível? Haverá ideias tão complexas que estão para lá da capacidade de idealização dos nossos cérebros humanos finitos? Poderão os cérebros investigar-se a si próprios, ou entrará a análise num loop infinito a partir do qual não conseguirá libertar-se? Haverá conjecturas matemáticas cuja verdade nunca poderá ser demonstrada? O QUE NUNCA SABEREMOS E se houver questões científicas que nunca poderão ser resolvidas? Parece derrotista, ou até mesmo perigoso, admitir tal hipótese. Se o desconhecido é a força impulsionadora do exercício da ciência, o incognoscível seria a némesis da ciência. Enquanto membro de pleno direito da comunidade científica, espero que possamos finalmente, um dia, dar resposta às grandes questões em aberto. Parece por isso importante saber se a expedição em que embarquei embaterá um dia em fronteiras além das quais não possamos prosseguir viagem – questões que nunca possam ser encerradas. Este é o desafio que lancei a mim próprio ao propor-me escrever este livro. Quero saber se haverá coisas que, pela sua própria natureza, nunca conheceremos. Haverá questões que se situem para além dos limites do conhecimento? Apesar do ritmo frenético dos avanços científicos, haverá domínios que estarão fora do alcance até mesmo dos maiores dos cientistas? Subsistirão mistérios que resistam às nossas tentativas de levantar os véus que actualmente ocultam a nossa visão do Universo? É, evidentemente, muito arriscado, em qualquer momento da História, tentar articular as Coisas que Não Sabemos. Como podemos ter a certeza de que novas descobertas não irão subitamente arrastar o desconhecido para o domínio do cognoscível? É em parte por esse motivo que me parece útil olhar para a história de como conhecemos aquilo que conhecemos, pois tal revelar-nos-á em quantas ocasiões pensámos ter embatido na fronteira derradeira, para descobrir afinal que havia forma de a atravessar. Consideremos, por exemplo, a afirmação produzida em 1835 pelo filósofo francês Auguste Comte acerca das estrelas: «Jamais conseguiremos estudar, seja por que método for, a sua composição química ou a sua estrutura mineralógica.» Afirmação absolutamente compreensível, considerando que tal conhecimento parecia depender da possibilidade de visitarmos uma estrela. O que Comte não levou em linha de conta foi a possibilidade de a estrela nos visitar a nós, ou, pelo menos, de os fotões de luz por ela emitidos poderem revelar a sua composição química. Algumas décadas após a profecia de Comte, já os cientistas haviam determinado a composição química da nossa própria estrela, o Sol, através da análise do espectro da luz emitida. O astrónomo britânico do século XIX Warren de la Rue declarou: «Se fôssemos ao Sol e trouxéssemos alguma da sua matéria para a analisar nos nossos laboratórios, não o examinaríamos com maior rigor do que podemos fazer com este novo método de análise espectral.» Os cientistas passaram então à determinação da composição química de estrelas que é pouco provável que algum dia visitemos. À medida que a ciência do século XIX continuava a facultar-nos uma compreensão cada vez mais apurada dos mistérios do Universo, começou a instalar-se a sensação de que poderíamos um dia dispor do retrato completo. Em 1900, Lord Kelvin, considerado por muitos um dos maiores cientistas do seu tempo, estava convencido de que esse momento chegara quando declarou numa reunião da British Association of Science: «Não há nada de novo a ser descoberto actualmente na Física. A única coisa que resta são medições cada vez mais precisas.» O físico americano Alfred Abraham Michelson era da mesma opinião. Também ele achava que o futuro da ciência consistiria simplesmente em adicionar algumas casas decimais aos resultados já obtidos. «As leis e factos mais importantes e fundamentais da ciência física foram já todos descobertos… as nossas futuras descobertas devem ser procuradas na sexta casa decimal.» Cinco anos depois, no entanto, Einstein anunciava a sua nova e extraordinária concepção do tempo e do espaço, em breve seguida pelas revelações da física quântica. Mas Kelvin e Michelson não podiam, afinal, estar mais equivocados acerca de quanta nova física havia ainda por descobrir. Aquilo que me proponho tentar analisar é se haverá problemas que podemos demonstrar permanecerão além do conhecimento humano, não obstante quaisquer novas descobertas. Talvez não haja nenhum. Enquanto cientista, essa é a minha esperança. Um dos perigos de nos confrontarmos com problemas actualmente sem resposta possível é o de cedermos demasiado cedo à sua incognoscibilidade. Mas se houver incognoscíveis, que estatuto terão? Será que podemos escolher de entre as respostas possíveis e não importará verdadeiramente por qual optaremos? A referência aos desconhecidos que conhecemos não se restringe ao mundo da ciência. O político americano Donald Rumsfeld aventurou-se pelo campo da filosofia do conhecimento com a sua famosa declaração: Há conhecidos; há coisas que sabemos que sabemos. Também sabemos que há desconhecidos conhecidos; isto é, sabemos que há coisas que não sabemos. Mas há igualmente desconhecidos, que são aqueles que não sabemos que não sabemos. Rumsfeld foi alvo de críticas intensas devido a esta resposta críptica a uma questão que lhe foi lançada durante um briefing no Departamento de Defesa, acerca da falta de provas da ligação do governo do Iraque com as armas de destruição em massa. Jornalistas e bloggers tiveram um dia em cheio, que culminou na atribuição a Rumsfeld do prémio Foot in Mouth pela iniciativa Plain English Campaign. E, no entanto, se analisarmos a declaração, verificamos que Rumsfeld resumiu de forma muito concisa os diferentes tipos de conhecimento. Passou, porventura, apenas, ao lado de uma interessante categoria: os conhecidos desconhecidos. As coisas que sabemos, mas não nos atrevemos a admitir que sabemos. Como defende o filósofo Slavoj Zizek, são estas possivelmente as mais perigosas, especialmente quando associadas aos detentores do poder político. Esse é o domínio do delírio. Dos pensamentos reprimidos. Do inconsciente freudiano. Adorava poder falar-lhe nos desconhecidos, mas nesse caso tornar-se-iam conhecidos! Nassim Taleb, autor de O Cisne Negro, afirma que é o aparecimento destes desconhecidos o responsável pelas maiores mudanças ocorridas na sociedade. No caso de Kelvin, foram a relatividade e a física quântica que desempenharam o papel de desconhecidos que ele se revelou incapaz de conceber. Por isso, ao longo das páginas deste livro, posso, na melhor das hipóteses, tentar articular os desconhecidos conhecidos e interrogar-me se algum deles permanecerá para sempre desconhecido. Haverá, por outras palavras, questões que, pela sua própria natureza, nunca poderão ter resposta, independentemente dos progressos registados no conhecimento? Chamei a estes desconhecidos «Limites». Representam o horizonte além do qual não conseguimos ver. A minha viagem até aos Limites do conhecimento, para articular os desconhecidos conhecidos, passará pelos conhecidos que demonstram como viajámos além do que anteriormente pensávamos serem os limites do conhecimento. Esta viagem porá igualmente à prova a minha própria capacidade de conhecer, pois torna-se cada vez mais difícil para um cientista conhecer sequer os conhecidos. Se este livro trata daquilo que não conseguimos conhecer, é igualmente importante compreender aquilo que conhecemos e como o conhecemos. A minha viagem até aos limites do conhecimento far-me-á percorrer o terreno que os cientistas já cartografaram, até aos mais longínquos limites das descobertas de ponta dos nossos dias. Ao longo do percurso, deter-me-ei a analisar aqueles momentos em que os cientistas julgaram ter deparado com uma parede além da qual o progresso não era já possível, para afinal a geração seguinte encontrar o caminho. Isso proporcionar-nos-á uma importante perspectiva sobre esses problemas que poderíamos julgar incognoscíveis hoje em dia. Quando chegarmos ao término da nossa viagem, espero que este livro tenha proporcionado uma análise abrangente não apenas do que não conseguimos conhecer, mas também das coisas que conhecemos de facto. Para me ajudar nas áreas científicas que se encontram fora da minha zona de conforto, solicitei a ajuda de especialistas que me pudessem guiar enquanto percorro o Limite de cada ciência e testar se são as minhas próprias limitações ou, por outro lado, as limitações inerentes às questões que enfrento, que as tornam incognoscíveis. O que acontecerá, então, se nos depararmos com uma questão que não possa ser respondida? Como se lida com o não conhecer? Atrever-me-ei a admitir para comigo próprio que algumas coisas permanecerão para sempre fora do meu alcance? Como é que nós, espécie humana, lidamos com o não sabermos? Esse é um desafio que suscitou respostas interessantes dos seres humanos ao longo dos milénios, dos quais o menor não será certamente a criação de uma ideia chamada Deus. TRANSCENDÊNCIA Há uma outra razão para me ter sentido incluído a investigar o incognoscível, igualmente relacionada com o meu novo cargo. O anterior ocupante da cátedra para a Compreensão Pública da Ciência foi um certo Richard Dawkins. Quando me passou o testemunho, preparei-me para o massacre de perguntas a que teria de responder, não sobre ciência, mas sobre religião. A publicação de A Desilusão de Deus e os debates acalorados que manteve com os criacionistas fizeram Dawkins gastar uma grande parte dos últimos anos do seu mandato a debater questões sobre religião e Deus. Era, assim, inevitável que quando eu próprio assumisse o cargo as pessoas se interessassem sobre a minha posição relativamente à religião. A minha reacção inicial foi a de colocar alguma distância entre mim próprio e Deus. A minha tarefa era a de promover o progresso científico, e de comunicar ao público as grandes descobertas que tinham lugar em seu redor. Estava ansioso por deslocar o debate de volta às questões da ciência, em lugar das da religião. Como estratégia para desviar as questões sobre Deus, acabei por admitir que era de facto um homem religioso. E antes que os jornalistas ficassem demasiado excitados, expliquei que a minha religião é o Arsenal. O meu templo é o Emirates (anteriormente conhecido por Estádio Highbury) na zona norte de Londres, e todos os Sábados adoro os meus ídolos e entoo-lhes cânticos. No início de cada época, reafirmo a minha fé de que este será o ano em que finalmente ganharemos alguma prata. Num ambiente urbano como o de Londres, o futebol assumiu o papel que a religião desempenhava na sociedade – estabelecer laços fortes, proporcionando rituais partilháveis por todos. Para mim, a ciência que comecei a aprender na adolescência cumpriu muitíssimo bem a tarefa de expulsar quaisquer ideias vagamente religiosas que alimentara em criança. Cantava no coro da igreja da minha zona, o que me expôs às ideias que o Cristianismo tinha a oferecer para a compreensão do Universo. A educação ministrada na década de 70 no Reino Unido estava imbuída de insinuações religiosas: por exemplo, cantava-se «All Things Bright and Beautiful» e o Pai Nosso nas assembleias. A religião era servida como algo demasiado simplista para sobreviver aos relatos sofisticados e poderosos que aprenderia nos laboratórios científicos da minha escola secundária e rapidamente foi posta de parte. A ciência e o futebol eram muito mais atraentes. Era inevitável que as questões relativas à minha posição sobre religião não se desvanecessem com uma resposta tão petulante. Recordo-me que, durante uma entrevista radiofónica numa manhã de domingo na BBC da Irlanda do Norte fui lentamente arrastado para uma reflexão sobre a questão da existência de Deus. Devia ter estado atento aos sinais de perigo. Numa manhã de sábado na Irlanda do Norte, Deus nunca está muito longe das mentes de muitos dos ouvintes. Na minha qualidade de matemático, confronto-me frequentemente com a dificuldade de provar a existência de novas estruturas, ou de encontrar argumentos para demonstrar por que razão tais estruturas não podem existir. O poder da linguagem matemática para produzir argumentos lógicos tem levado ao longo dos tempos bastantes filósofos a recorrer à matemática como forma de demonstrar a existência de Deus. Mas tenho sempre uma dificuldade com tal abordagem. Se queremos provar a existência, ou qualquer outra coisa, na matemática, necessitamos de uma definição muito clara daquilo cuja existência tentamos provar. Assim, após algum assédio por parte do entrevistador acerca da minha posição sobre a existência de Deus, obriguei-o a tentar definir o que Deus significava para ele, de modo a poder fazer entrar em acção a minha mente matemática. «É algo que transcende a compreensão humana.» De início pensei: que belo chuto para canto. Acabas de definir algo que, pela sua própria natureza, não posso debater. Mas a verdade é que aquela definição me deixou intrigado. Talvez não fosse afinal bem um chuto para canto. E se definirmos Deus como as coisas que não podemos conhecer? Os deuses de muitas culturas antigas eram um repositório das coisas que não se conseguia explicar ou compreender. Os nossos antepassados consideravam as erupções vulcânicas e os eclipses tão misteriosos que se transformavam em actos dos deuses. Mas à medida que a ciência foi explicando tais fenómenos, esses deuses foram recuando. Esta definição tem alguns aspectos em comum com o Deus habitualmente designado por «Deus das lacunas». Esta expressão era em geral utilizada em sentido depreciativo por filósofos da religião que se apercebiam de que este Deus ia encolhendo em face das investidas do conhecimento científico, tendo-se erguido um clamor no sentido de rejeitar este tipo de divindade. A expressão «Deus das lacunas» foi cunhada pelo matemático de Oxford e pastor da igreja Metodista Charles Coulson, quando declarou: «Não há nenhum 'Deus das lacunas' para ocupar aqueles locais estratégicos em que a ciência falha.» Mas a frase está igualmente associada a um argumento falacioso em favor da existência de Deus, a que Richard Dawkins dedicou algum tempo, tentando aniquilá-lo em A Desilusão de Deus: se há coisas que não conseguimos explicar ou conhecer, tem de haver um Deus em jogo a preencher a lacuna. A mim, porém, o que mais me interessa não é a existência de um Deus para preencher a lacuna, mas sim relacionar Deus com a ideia abstracta das coisas que não conseguimos conhecer. Não aquelas que actualmente não conhecemos, mas aquelas que pela sua própria natureza nunca poderemos conhecer. As coisas que sempre permanecerão transcendentes. A religião é mais complexa do que o simples estereótipo frequentemente formulado pela sociedade moderna. Para muitas culturas antigas da Índia, China e Médio Oriente, a religião não implicava adorar uma Inteligência Sobrenatural, mas constituía precisamente a tentativa de compreender os limites da nossa compreensão e linguagem. Como declarou o teólogo Herbert McCabe: «Afirmar a existência de Deus é o mesmo que afirmar que existe uma questão sem resposta relativa ao Universo.» Ora, a ciência empurrou vigorosamente esses limites. My background is not your average one. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering (University of Coimbra, Portugal), a C2 Proficiency, formerly known as Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), I worked as advertising copywriter for a decade and now am a full-time freelance translator. Honouring such an eclectic background, I do all kinds of translations, from technical (science, engineering, marketing, management) to child and youth literature, biology, history, politics, etc.

I am also an author, with half a dozen titles published (humour and child llterature).
