Translation - English
Developmental disability refers to the severe damage of an individual’s mental or physical functions due to genetic or environmental factors; this involves conditions such as mental retardation, learning difficulties, cerebral palsy, autism, and brain injury. Individuals with developmental disabilities display impediments to learning, reveal a lack of metaphysical thinking ability, and are slow in learning due to cognitive defects(Noh, 2009). Group interaction only occurs under controlled circumstances, which results in limited relationships(Yoo, 2000). They also have a hard time building meaningful social relationships with other people due to consistent isolation from society(Na,1999). Children who live in specialized centers with developmental disabilities display low physical abilities. An explanation for this is that they tend to not participate in physical activities(Choi, 2002), and that circumstance does not allow them to act without their parents. Efforts are needed to help them achieve autonomy and raise their quality of life by providing them with more physical activities and by increasing their social skills. To build the quality of their life and assist them with social integration, they need help with their occupations and independence after becoming adults(Cho, 1999). There are many facilities and specialized schools exclusively for them that help in these areas, which provide aid for their welfare and offer rehabilitation. This study which conducted with students with developmental disabilities residing in a special welfare school in Korea, aims to find out whether forest activity programs improve the participants' physical abilities pertaining to gross and fine motor skills and their sociabilities through communication with the peer group.
