1. The name ‘Gin’ comes from the Dutch ‘jenever’ which is a malted spirit infused with juniper. The British developed what is recognizable as Gin today in London – a spirit which is much purer spirit than the Dutch ‘jenever’.
2. There are more classic cocktails made with Gin than any other spirit including the Martini, Negroni, and many more.
3. The Philippines drinks the most gin – almost half of the annual global sale of gin is consumed there.
4. In the Victorian Era, the British colonies created the ‘Gin and Tonic’ for the quinine present in the tonic, used to fight off malaria. The taste of the tonic water was thought to be so bitter that gin was added to mask the flavour, and so the G&T was born.
5. Sloe gin is a gin infused with the sloe berry – a sharp, unpleasant tasting berry mainly found in hedgerows. The berries are infused in a high-proof gin, along with a pinch of sugar. This creates a beautifully tart liqueur with a delicious richness and great depth of flavour.
6. The earliest known gin food pairing was in 1731 when gin was served with gingerbread.
7. Gin and tomato juice was a well-known hangover cure in the 1920s until the Bloody Mary was created.
8. The gin cocktail called the ‘Gimlet’ was first created at sea as a way of preventing scurvy due to the abundance of vitamin C in the fresh lime juice.
9. While British sailors received a daily rum ration up until 1970, naval officers received a daily gin ration.
10. The juniper berry, from which gin is made, is not a berry at all, but is in fact a female seed cone.
11. During the plague, doctors wore masks filled with juniper berries as they believed that the disease was spread by bad odours and the berries would protect them.
12. The Gin Act of 1736 imposed an annual fee of £50 (approximately £20,000) on the distillers of base spirits. This therefore explains why it has become the norm for distillers of London Dry Gin to buy their base spirit rather than producing it themselves.
13. The term 'Dutch Courage' was invented by English soldiers fighting their Dutch counterparts. They believed that the Dutch drank gin to strengthen themselves before a fight.
14. In 2015, Britain drank over 29 million litres of Gin, with estimates showing that we will spend over £1.3 billion annually on the spirit by 2020.
15. For a gin to be legally defined as a London Dry Gin it must be:
- Distilled to at least 70% ABV
- Free of artificial ingredients
- Free of flavours or colourings added after the distillation process
- Free of Added Sugar
