Ты прав, читатель, что ж, не скрою,
Виновен, - замышлял обман:
Не досказать судьбу героя
И кое-как прервать роман.
Но не суди поэта строго –
Причин на это очень много.
И если б в ряд их ставил ты –
Как раз бы кончил у Читы.
Продолжить я намерен все же.
Быть перед совестью в долгу,
Ей-богу, больше не смогу.
Жизнь – клад, но истина дороже.
Она мне цензор и указ…

Владыка слабый и лукавый,
Плешивый щеголь, враг труда,
Нечаянно пригретый славой,
Над нами царствовал тогда.
Вскочив на трон отца-капрала,
Он долго корчил либерала
И будто выполнить решил
Все, что Лагарп ему внушил.
Явил он действием отвагу:
В кругу интимнейших друзей,
Свободомысленных князей,
Чертил прожектами бумагу…
Но почему-то из царя
Не получилось бунтаря.

As readers rightly apprehended
I’m guilty plotting a deceit -
to leave my hero’s life un-ended
and cut my story loosely knit.
The poet’s guilt is not all his –
so many reasons to do this
that if you lined them straight and far
they’d reach the town of Chita.
Yet, let me tell you what’s in store.
I will move on without regret -
my conscience bears a heavy debt.
Life is a treasure, truth is more,
is my censor and my call…
Let’s move the story after all.
II
A balding follower of fashion,
a weak and vile sovereign,
a labor’s hater, indiscretion
of passing glory ruled us then.
just throned, this son of a corporal
took time to feign a liberal
as if decided to pass through
all what La Harpe had taught was true.
He showed courage in his act:
his freedom-loving friends at hand,
the intimate and noble band,
spent ink and paper to project…
Yet, for a reason I can’t tell
short of conspiracy he fell.
