Jerusalem – Bereits im Juli könnte der israelische Regierungschef Benjamin Netanjahu sein Wahlversprechen wahrmachen und der Knesset den Plan für eine Annexion wichtiger Teile des Westjordanlandes zur Abstimmung vorlegen. Es wäre der erste Schritt zur Umsetzung des umstrittenen Nahostplans von US-Präsident Donald Trump.
US-Außenminister Mike Pompeo hat zum Auftakt eines Israel-Besuchs am Mittwoch erneut den Willen der USA zur Umsetzung des Nahostplans von Präsident Trump bekräftigt. Man wolle über "die Friedensvision" Trumps sprechen, sagte Pompeo zu Beginn des Treffens mit Netanjahu in Jerusalem.
Plan erlaubt Annexion von Teilen des Westjordanlandes
Im Jänner stellte der US-Präsident im Beisein Netanjahus seinen lange angekündigten Nahostplan der Öffentlichkeit vor – und löste damit umgehend Empörung bei den Palästinensern aus. Zwar sollen die Palästinenser dem Plan zufolge die Möglichkeit erhalten, unter strengen Bedingungen einen eigenen Staat zu gründen. Grünes Licht geben die USA in dem Plan jedoch auch für eine israelische Annexion aller bestehenden jüdischen Siedlungen im Westjordanland sowie des strategisch wichtigen Jordantals. Insgesamt würden damit rund 30 Prozent des Westjordanlandes Teil des israelischen Staates.
Der Vorschlag erfüllt nicht die Erwartungen der Palästinenser, die alle seit dem Sechstagekrieg 1967 durch Israel besetzten Gebiete für sich in Anspruch nehmen und darauf bestehen, dass Ostjerusalem die Hauptstadt ihres künftigen Staates sein soll. Gemäß Trumps Plan könnte ein eigener Palästinenserstaat auf dem nach den israelischen Annexionen verbleibenden Gebiet des Westjordanlandes sowie des von der radikalislamischen Hamas kontrollierten Gazastreifens entstehen. Hauptstadt wäre demnach der Jerusalemer Vorort Abu-Dis, während Jerusalem laut dem Plan "ungeteilte Hauptstadt" Israels bleiben soll.
International wurde Trumps Plan heftig kritisiert. Die Uno betrachtet die israelischen Siedlungen in Ostjerusalem und im Westjordanland, in denen inzwischen mehr als 600.000 Menschen leben, als völkerrechtswidrig.

Jerusalem – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could keep his campaign promise and the Knesset could put its plan for the annexation of important parts to the vote as early as July. It would be the first step in implementing U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial plan for the Middle East.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo began a visit to Israel on Wednesday by reaffirming the U.S. will to implement President Trump's plan for the Middle East. The goal was to talk about Trump's "Vision for Peace", said Pompeo at the start of the meeting with Netanyahu in Jerusalem.
Plan allows for the annexation of parts of the West Bank
In January the U.S. President, attended by Netanyahu, presented his long-awaited plan for the Middle East to the public – prompting immediate outrage among the Palestinians.
According to the plan, the Palestinians should be given the opportunity to establish their own state under strict conditions. However, the U.S. plan also gives the green light to an Israeli annexation of all current Jewish settlements in the West Bank as well as the strategically important Jordan Valley. Overall, around 30 percent of the West Bank would become part of the Israeli state.
The proposal does not meet the expectations of the Palestinians, who have claimed all the territories occupied by Israel since the Six Day War in 1967 and insist that East Jerusalem be the capital of their future state. According to Trump's plan, a separate Palestinian state could emerge in the area of the West Bank remaining after the Israeli annexations and in the Gaza Strip controlled by the radical Islamic group Hamas. The capital would be the Jerusalem suburb of Abu-Dis, while Jerusalem is planned to remain the "undivided capital" of Israel.
Internationally, Trump's plan has been heavily criticized. The United Nations considers the Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, in which more than 600,000 people now live, to be contrary to international law.
