Source text - English When you apply for asylum and wait for a decision, you don’t have the right to rent a home, and very few people have the right to work and earn money. Most people get government support with housing and money. They initially live in a government hostel for 3-4 weeks, where meals and toiletries are usually provided. During this time, they have to apply for ‘Asylum Support’ to move into longer-term housing and get money for daily living while they wait for their asylum decision.
To apply for Asylum Support, you need to complete a form to show that you don’t have money for a home/ and or daily living. If you’re successful, you usually get:
● A place to live - you cannot choose where you live. In England, this will usually be outside of London in Central or North England. Some people only apply for money for daily living as they have friends and family who can support them with housing.
● Approximately £40 per week which does not need to be repaid - if you are pregnant or have children, you can get a few pounds more.
It takes a few weeks to process so apply early - most people apply within days of claiming asylum and moving into temporary housing.
