Katastrofa smoleńska – wypadek lotniczy, w którym 10 kwietnia 2010 roku zginęło 96 osób, w tym prezydent RP Lech Kaczyński oraz wielu członków polskiej elity politycznej – dla Jarosława Kaczyńskiego, prezesa PiS i brata zmarłego prezydenta, od samego początku stała się środkiem do jednoczenia swoich zwolenników w nienawiści do wszystkich przeciwników politycznych. Stanowiła fundament kłamliwej narracji o zdrajcach narodu i mordercach na usługach obcych potęg.
Garstka milcząco przeciw całej potędze państwa
Podczas organizowanych co miesiąc marszów smoleńskich tłum fanatycznych zwolenników PiS przemierzał trasę z bazyliki archikatedralnej św. Jana Chrzciciela na Starym Mieście w Warszawie pod Pałac Prezydencki przy Krakowskim Przedmieściu, żeby tam uczestniczyć w politycznym wiecu. Na każdym z nich z ust przemawiających polityków PiS nie padały słowa o ofiarach tragedii, których pamięć rzekomo mieli czcić, lecz obelgi i kłamliwe oszczerstwa wobec tych współobywateli, którzy nie zgadzają się na nacjonalizm, bezprawie i faktyczne wyprowadzanie kraju z Unii Europejskiej. Gdy w 2015 roku PiS przejął władzę, te seanse nienawiści zyskały status uroczystości państwowych. Do ich ochrony i dla podniesienia ich rangi zaangażowano tysiące funkcjonariuszy policji, wojska i innych służb. Każde wystąpienie prezesa zaczęto transmitować w zawłaszczonych przez partię mediach publicznych, traktując je jako oficjalne stanowisko państwa polskiego, wykładnia jego polityki. Z tej trybuny w świat szedł całkowicie sfałszowany i zakłamany przekaz o naszej historii i współczesności, mający pozbawić opozycję w oczach PiS-owskiego elektoratu ludzkiej twarzy.
Dlatego w marcu 2016 roku niewielka na początku grupka obywatelek i obywateli postanowiła milcząco zaprotestować przeciwko sianiu nienawiści przez partię rządzącą, stając twarzą w twarz ze złem tam, gdzie biło jego symboliczne serce. Gdzie pod pozorem modlitw i żałoby, wzywano do rozprawy z każdym, w gotowości do wykluczenia ze wspólnoty obywatelskiej każdego, kto śmie sprzeciwiać się prezesowi i jego pomagierom. Obywatelskie protesty przed Pałacem Prezydenckim długo były ignorowane nie tylko przez władzę, ale i przez opozycję w rozumieniu zarówno partii politycznych, głównych mediów prodemokratycznych, jak i liderów największej wówczas społecznej organizacji opozycyjnej – Komitetu Obrony Demokracji (KOD). Mimo to jej członkowie pojawiali się na Krakowskim Przedmieściu właściwie od samego początku.
To właśnie tam narodził się zasłużony dla obrony wartości demokratycznych ruch Obywateli RP, stamtąd wzięło się stowarzyszenie Obywatele Solidarnie w Akcji (OSA), tam zaistniała chwalebnie w świadomości opinii publicznej grupa TAMA (i TAMA-Wawa), to tam po wielu miesiącach ramię w ramię stanęli wreszcie przeciw PiS-owskiemu bezprawiu członkowie różnych organizacji opozycyjnych: Strajku Kobiet, KOD, Wolnych i Równych (WiR), Protestu Kobiet, Straży Obywatelskiej, Studenckiego Komitetu Antyfaszystowskiego, Odnowy, Wolności i Demokracji i wielu innych.
Nie zwiodła ich propaganda władzy, w której pokojowe protesty – fundament demokracji – to awantury, podczas których „z ust opętanych komunistów i złodziei dobywa się szatański bełkot”, nie wystraszyły policyjne represje i przemoc – z własnego doświadczenia bowiem znali siłę i smak solidarności, jaka rodzi się jedynie skutkiem wspólnego działania w słusznej sprawie. Mimo wielu różnic i podziałów, naturalnych w polityce, uczestnicy tych wydarzeń wiedzą więc, że mogą na siebie liczyć, niezależnie z jakiej są organizacji.
Eskalacja bezprawia i przemocy władzy
Obywatele RP, czyli środowisko, które od samego początku zajmowało się organizowaniem „kontrmiesięcznic”, zawsze dbali o to, by manifestacje były zgłaszane zgodnie z wymogami prawa, czego nie dopełniała pełna pychy i poczucia wszechmocy władza. Zgodnie z prawem to kontrmanifestacje były legalnymi zgromadzeniami publicznymi, mającymi pierwszeństwo przed smoleńskimi seansami nienawiści. Tego władza znieść nie mogła i dlatego postanowiła zmienić ustawę o zgromadzeniach tak, żeby – likwidując de facto konstytucyjne prawo obywateli do demonstracji – zapewnić sobie monopol na igrzyska na Krakowskim Przedmieściu każdego 10 dnia miesiąca, w „miesięcznicę” katastrofy, którą nazwała bez żadnych dowodów zamachem, aby oczernić swoich przeciwników politycznych. Chodziło w tym jedynie o to, by usunąć sprzed oczu Jarosława Kaczyńskiego kontrmanifestantów wypominających mu co miesiąc milcząco, że kłamie. Przyjęcie przez PiS-owską większość w parlamencie tego ustawowego bezprawia zbiegło się w czasie (jesień 2016) z barbarzyńską decyzją o ekshumacji wszystkich ofiar katastrofy, także tych, których rodziny kategorycznie się temu sprzeciwiały. Ekshumacje te podjęto mimo pełnej świadomości, że odpowiednie badania podjęto już wcześniej i nie było nawet żadnych poszlak, które potwierdzałyby fantastyczne teorie o zamachu. Skargę rodzin na działania PiS-owskiej prokuratury rozpatrzył 20 września br. Europejski Trybunał Praw Człowieka, działania polskich władz uznano za sprzeczne z Europejską Konwencją Praw Człowieka.
Te wszystkie wydarzenia doprowadziły do tego, że grudniu 2016 roku organizatorzy protestów obywatelskich po raz pierwszy postanowili skorzystać ze swoich praw do demonstrowania w zarejestrowanym przez siebie czasie i miejscu (do tamtej pory manifestacje opozycji ustępowały „miesięcznicom”: w imię tego, by nie eskalować konfliktu, ustawiano się z własnej woli po przeciwnej stronie ulicy). Postanowiono nie dopuścić do wiecu PiS pod Pałacem Prezydenckim. Żądano cofnięcia bezprawnej nowelizacji ustawy i wstrzymania ekshumacji.
Obywatelki i obywatele zostali wtedy pierwszy raz przemocą usunięci z miejsca swojej legalnej demonstracji przez bojówki PiS i współpracującą z nimi policję i inne służby państwowe. Od tej pory przemoc i bezprawie władzy na Krakowskim Przedmieściu stały się jawne.
Tego też dnia, 10 grudnia 2106 roku, potraktowany brutalnie tłum kontrmanifestantów po raz pierwszy przerwał swój milczący protest. Anegdota powiada, że w trakcie nienawistnego przemówienia prezesa Kaczyńskiego nie wytrzymał syn pierwszego niekomunistycznego premiera RP Tadeusza Mazowieckiego, który wykrzyknął „kłamca!”, co ludzie podchwycili i skandowali potem na każdej kontrmiesięcznicy, gdy tylko szef PiS zaczynał przemawiać.
Za wznoszenie tego okrzyku wiele osób policja stawiała potem przed sądami, które zawsze jednak uniewinniały manifestantów.
Czas stalowych barier
Symbolem PiS w Polsce stały się metalowe barierki, którymi od grudnia 2016 roku permanentnie ogrodzony jest z powodu strachu władzy przed obywatelami parlament, a które co miesiąc wyznaczały w samym historycznym centrum stolicy „eksterytorialny” korytarz, którym w każdą „miesięcznicę smoleńską” pod ochroną tysięcy policjantów poruszać się mogli jedynie członkowie najwyższych władz partii i ich najwierniejsi zwolennicy.
Ten korytarz nazwano Aleją Hańby, a barierki służyły opozycji za miejsce do ekspozycji haseł w obronie praworządności, wolności, praw człowieka i demokracji. Za to oraz za okrzyki typu „Lech Wałęsa!”, „wolność, równość, demokracja!” lub za machanie białą różą, uznaną przez prezesa PiS za symbol nienawiści i głupoty. Policja na rozkaz władzy stawiała za wyżej opisane „przestępstwa” setki ludzi przed sądem, pod pozorem legitymowania godzinami bezprawnie przetrzymywała i brutalnie znosiła z trasy przemarszu zwolenników władzy.
Wolne i niezależne sądy, które właśnie politycy PiS przejmują, zawsze stawały po stronie konstytucyjnego prawa do wolności wyrażania poglądów i umarzały postępowania w sprawach absurdalnych oskarżeń, jednocześnie wydając prawomocne wyroki, że mają oni prawo protestować tam, gdzie chcą, a zakazy wydawane przez władzę są nie tylko bezprawiem, ale wręcz przestępstwem. Niestety Polska to pod władzą PiS kraj, gdzie do wykonania prawomocnych wyroków sądów nie dopuszcza policja państwowa.
Rok 2017 na Krakowskim Przedmieściem upłynął właśnie na pokojowej obronie prawa przez obywateli przed łamiącą je władzą i jej zbrojnym ramieniem.
Pole bitwy
W ubiegłym roku kontrmiesięcznice organizowane były w trzech punktach na trasie przemarszu pochodu smoleńskiego – przez trzech różnych organizatorów.
Na placu Zamkowym i w jego pobliżu odbywały się najliczniejsze demonstracje Obywateli RP, którzy w proteście przeciwko bezprawiu PiS postanowili nie rejestrować swoich zgromadzeń, uznając, że żadna ustawa ograniczająca ich konstytucyjne prawa, nie jest zgodna z prawem.
Z kolei w okolicy placu Zamkowego, przy skwerze Hoovera, odbywały się stosunkowo nieliczne, ale ważne manifestacje grupy TAMA (i potem TAMA-Wawa), ważne dlatego, że to właśnie działacze tego środowiska (m.in. z niezłomnym w walce o praworządność Dariuszem Kornackim) stwierdzili, że PiS-owska nowelizacja prawa o zgromadzeniach jest nie tylko niekonstytucyjna, ale wręcz zawiera w sobie lukę, która nie pozwala administracji państwowej zakazywać manifestacji zgłoszonych w trybie uproszczonym, wedle którego zgłaszali do rejestru aktywiści TAMY i Obywateli Solidarnie w Akcji (OSA), co pozwoliło w sądach kilkadziesiąt razy obalić bezprawne zarządzenia zakazujące obywatelom legalnych manifestacji. Niestety, jak już wspominałem, policja siłą nie dopuszczała do wykonania tych wyroków.
Jednocześnie na tym samym szlaku, ale nieco dalej, w pobliżu hotelu Bristol, w rejonie ulicy Karowej i pomnika Bolesława Prusa, odbywały się kontrmiesięcznice OSA. To stamtąd prezes słyszał „kłamcę” wykrzyczanych z setek, a czasem i tysięcy gardeł.
Gorzkim zwycięstwem opozycji było to, że orzeczeniach sądów uznano, iż to manifestacje władzy nie są w rozumieniu ustawy zgromadzeniami publicznymi (gdyż takie powinny być otwarte dla wszystkich, a nie odbywać się za stalowym płotem), lecz „prywatnymi imprezami PiS”. Tymczasem to jednak opozycja poddana zostaje fali policyjnych represji i aktom przemocy.
Już w kwietniu 2017 zwolennicy PiS napadli na kilku członków Obywateli RP i zaatakowali drzewcami od polskich flag Macieja Bajkowskiego na manifestacji OSA, niszcząc przy okazji sprzęt stowarzyszenia. Co bardzo wymowne, policja na czas napadu zniknęła. Napastnicy nie ponieśli żadnych konsekwencji.
W maju 2017 w wyniku zachęty posłanki PiS Anety Czerwińskiej tłum smoleński prawie zlinczował działaczki Strajku Kobiet – Elwirę Borowiec i Angelikę Domańską, które śmiały w obecności prezesa unieść do góry symbol oporu przeciw PiS – białe róże. W tym samym czasie szeroko zakrojona akcja policji uniemożliwiła dostarczenie na miejsce legalnej manifestacji nagłośnienia OSA – śledzono i zatrzymano wszystkie samochody, którymi Stowarzyszenie wiozło sprzęt.
Miesiąc później, w czerwcu 2017 roku, Obywatele RP w odpowiedzi na te akty bezprawia organizują blokadę marszu smoleńskiego, w której bierze udział wiele znanych i cenionych osób, w tym słynny lider podziemnej „Solidarności” z czasów komunistycznego reżimu Władysław Frasyniuk – on też wyląduje za obronę praworządności przed sądem. W kontrmiesięcznice, w związku z majowym atakiem na swoje działaczki, włączają się oficjalnie środowiska kobiece – członkinie Strajku Kobiet biorą udział w blokadzie i w marszu, który ma ochronić przed konfiskatą nagłośnienie OSA.
Zdjęcia z blokady zorganizowanej przez Obywateli RP, na których widać wynoszonego Władysława Frasyniuka, obiegają świat, który zastyga w zdumieniu na widok PiS-owskiej „demokracji”.
W lipcu 2017 roku OSA i Obywatele RP usiłują już na kilka dni przed nadchodzącą „miesięcznicą” zająć miejsce swoich legalnych manifestacji pod Pałacem Prezydenckim, do czego mają prawo, zgodnie w prawomocnymi wyrokami sądów. Zostają jednak stamtąd siłą przepędzeni przez policję. Obywatele Solidarni w Akcji symbolicznie wynoszą spod siedziby prezydenta egzemplarz Konstytucji, która na terenie okupowanego przez siły porządkowe „PiS-landu” już de facto nie obowiązuje...
Wygrana obywatelek i obywateli
Zupełnie niespodziewanie, w sierpniu 2017 roku, kiedy do PiS dociera, że polityczny i wizerunkowy koszt wieców na Krakowskim Przedmieściu zaczyna przerastać płynące z nich zyski, następuje zwrot akcji, który uznajemy za wygraną! Raptem prezes ogłasza, że za 8 miesięcy odbędzie się ostatnia „miesięcznica smoleńska”, rezygnując przy tym z tego, co obiecywał swoim wyznawcom, po pierwsze: z „dojścia do prawdy o zamachu”, po drugie: z pomników, które miały pod Pałacem Prezydenckim i przy hotelu Bristol głosić chwałę PiS-owskich ofiar katastrofy oraz stać się miejscem wiecznego kultu partii. Pomniki wprawdzie staną w ekspresowym tempie, ale nie tam, gdzie żądał tego PiS, wbrew woli warszawiaków, lecz na placu Piłsudskiego, podstępem zagarniętym przez rząd władzom miasta pod pozorem „względów obronności państwa”.
Obywatelkom i Obywatelom udaje się zatem obronić wspólną przestrzeń publiczną, którą chciała zagarnąć i przez lata zagarniała bezprawnie władza. Wprawdzie czekało ich jeszcze 9 miesięcy walki z aparatem przymusu państwowego, wiele osób nadal było poddawanych represjom i padało ofiarą przemocy, jednak osiągnięto cel podstawowy: plugawe, nienawistne wiece PiS skończyły się w dniu 10 kwietnia 2018 roku. Skończył się czas stalowych barierek hańby w samym centrum stolicy.
Dokonaliśmy tego sami, bez niczyjej pomocy, odzyskaliśmy wreszcie swą podmiotowość – moc płynącą z konsekwentnej solidarności w sprawach fundamentalnych, i tego, czyli wolności, nikt już nam nie zabierze. Wolność jest w nas!

Translation - English Smoleńsk counter-monthiversaries – an example of effective, peaceful resistance of citizens against the violence of the authoritarian rule of the Law and Justice party (PiS)
The Smoleńsk air crash, in which on the 10th of April 2010, 96 people died, including the president of Poland Lech Kaczyński and many representatives of the Polish political elite – from the very beginning was used by Jarosław Kaczyński, the head of PiS and the brother of the deceased president as means of unification in hatred towards all his political opponents. It constituted the foundation of a false narrative of “traitors of the nation and murderers at the service of foreign powers”.
A silent handful against the entire might of the state
During the Smoleńsk marches organised every month, a crowd of fanatic PiS supporters walked from the St John’s Archcathedral in the Old Town in Warsaw to the Presidential Palace at Krakowskie Przedmieście in order to participate in a political rally. At each rally, PiS politicians would not dedicate a word to the victims of the tragedy, the memory of which they were meant to honour. Instead, they uttered insults and words of deceitful slander towards those co-citizens, who do not agree with nationalism, lawlessness and actions leading to the withdrawal of Poland from the EU. In 2015, when PiS took power, those hateful rituals gained the status of state celebrations. Thousands of officers of the police, the army and other state services were involved with the protecting of the events and raising their profile. Each speech of Kaczyński used to be broadcast in the state media, hijacked by the ruling party, and treated as an official position of the Polish state and the one and only interpretation of its politics. A completely falsified and deceitful message about Polish history and modern days was reaching the masses. That message was meant to deprive opposition of a human face in the eyes of PiS supporters.
That is why in March 2016, an initially small group of citizens decided to protest against the spread of hatred from the ruling party and stood face to face with evil, exactly where it's symbolical heart beat. Where, under the disguise of prayers and mourning, people were called to confront those who dared to oppose the head of PiS and his sidekicks; where, for the same reason, people were called to exclude their fellow citizens from society. For a long time, the pavement in front of the Presidential Palace was actually the only place where a symbolical confrontation between two types of Poland would take place. The first Poland – open, tolerant, democratic, the one that does not yell and merely stands in silence holding banners with the words of president Lech Kaczyński, words that disproved what Jarosław Kaczyński was doing with the memory of his brother, with a democratic country of law; stood in front of the second Poland – the one with a face crooked with hatred, insulting and spitting (literally) everyone who does not share the belief in the wicked utopia of PiS.
From lack of support to active engagement: the role of counter-monthiversaries in the unification of street opposition
The civil protests in front of the Presidential Palace were ignored for a long time, not only by the authorities but also the opposition, meaning – the political parties, main pro-democratic media, as well as the leaders of, what was at the time, the largest opposition organization – Komitet Obrony Demokracji (The Committee of Defense of Democracy). Despite that, some members of this organization used to appear at Krakowskie Przedmieście from the beginning.
It was there, where Obywatele RP – a movement accomplished in the area of defense of democratic values, was born. It was from there that Obywatele Solidarni w Akcji (Citizens United in Action) association came to existence. It was there that TAMA (and TAMA-Warsaw) group gained a praiseworthy position in the public awareness. It was there, where finally, after many months, members of various opposition organizations such as Strajk Kobiet (Women’s Strike), KOD, Wolni i Równi (Free and Equal), Protest Kobiet (Women’s Protest), Straż Obywatelska (Citizens’ Guard), Studencki Komitet Anty-faszystowski (Student Anti-fascist Committee), Odnowa, Wolność i Demokracja (Freedom and Democracy) stood side by side against the lawlessness of PiS.
They were not misled by the ruling party’s propaganda that portrayed a peaceful protest – the foundation of democracy – as mayhem during which „from the lips of possessed communists and thieves comes satanic gabble”. They were not scared by the police repression and violence; they knew the power and taste of solidarity that arises only as a result of common action for the right cause, from their own experience. Despite many differences and divisions – a natural thing in politics – until today the participants of those events know that they can count on each other, no matter which organization they belong to.
Escalation of lawlessness and violence of the authority
Obywatele RP, the group that since the very beginning was responsible for organizing the counter-monthiversaries, always ensured that their demonstrations were registered in accordance to law, in contrast to the way the arrogant, entitled authority. According to law, it was the counter-manifestations that were legal public assemblies and they had priority in front of the Smoleńsk rituals of hatred. The authority could not bear it and thus it changed the bill on public assembly. As a matter of fact, by doing so, the authority abolished the constitutional right of Polish citizens to demonstrate and ensured it would have a monopoly for events at Krakowskie Przedmieście on each 10th day of the month, that is on each monthiversary of the air crash, which, with no evidence, they called an assassination in order to besmirch their political opponents. It was all done to remove the counter-demonstrators who gathered each month and silently reminded Kaczyński that he was lying, in front of his own eyes. The time when PiS parliamentary majority passed this unlawful bill coincided with their barbaric decision on the exhumation of all of the Smoleńsk air crash victims, including those whose families categorically opposed it. The exhumations were carried out, despite full awareness that adequate investigation had been conducted before, and without any lead proving the incredible assassination theories. On the 20th of September 2018, the European Court of Human Rights examined the complaint of families against the actions of the PiS prosecutor’s office and ruled that they had violated the European Convention on Human Rights.
Due to all of this, in December 2016, the organisers of civil protests decided to use their right to demonstrate at the time and in the place registered by them for the first time. Until then, in order not to escalate the conflict, the opposition’s manifestations would always give way to the monthiversaries and voluntarily move to the other side of the street. It was decided not to allow for the PiS rally to take place in front of the Presidential Palace. The protesters demanded a withdrawal of the unlawful amendment to the bill, and suspension of the exhumations.
This was the first time when citizens, men and women were removed from the spot of their legal demonstration by force. PiS troops in cooperation with the police and other law enforcement were used for this purpose. Since then, the authorities openly acted in violent and unlawful ways at Krakowskie Przedmieście.
It was also that day, on the 10th of December 2016, when the crowd of protesters, having been brutally treated by the authorities, broke its silent protest. It is said that it was the son of the first democratic prime minister of Poland, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, who exclaimed “Liar” during one of Kaczyński’s hateful speeches. People immediately picked it up and chanted the same words on each monthiversary, as soon as the chairman of PiS began his speech.
This yell became a reason for the police to open cases against many citizens. The courts, however, always acquitted the protesters.
The time of metal fences
Metal fences, which since December 2016, due to the authorities’ fear, permanently fence the parliament off the citizens, became the symbol of PiS in Poland. Each month, in the very historical centre of the capital, metal barriers marked an extra-territorial corridor, reserved only for the elite of the ruling party and its most loyal supporters, walking under the protection of thousands of police officers.
People named this corridor “The Avenue of Shame”. The fences were used by the opposition to display slogans in defense of the rule of law, freedom, human rights and democracy. This and anything else, for instance, “Lech Wałęsa” and “freedom, equality, democracy” chants or waving a white rose, deemed as a symbol of hatred and stupidity by Kaczyński, was considered an offence by the authorities. Acting upon the orders of the authorities, the police brought hundreds of people to trial for above-mentioned “crimes”. They would also unlawfully surround and contain protesters for hours as well as brutally remove them from the route of the supporters of the ruling party.
The free, independent Polish courts, currently being hijacked by PiS politicians, always defended the constitutional right to freedom of expression and discontinued proceedings in cases based on absurd charges. At the same time, the courts would issue final sentences confirming that citizens have the right to protest where they want and that the bans issued by the authorities are not only unlawful but, actually, illegal. Unfortunately, Poland under the rule of PiS is a country, where the police prevents the execution of final court judgments.
It was precisely this, the citizens’ peaceful defense of law against its violation by the authority and its armed branch, that 2017 at Krakowskie Przedmieście was dedicated to.
The battlefield
Last year, three different groups organized counter-monthiversaries in three different spots on the route of the Smoleńsk march.
The largest demonstrations took place at Castle Square and its surroundings. They were organized by Obywatele RP, who decided not to register their assemblies in protest against the lawlessness of PiS. They believed that no bill limiting their constitutional rights was lawful.
Smaller but very significant manifestations by TAMA group (and later TAMA-Wawa) were taking place next to Hoover’s Square. Their significance lied in the fact that it was the activists of this group (including steadfast defender of the rule of law – Dariusz Kornacki), who claimed that the PiS amendment of the right to the freedom of assembly was not only unconstitutional, but also included a legal loophole. The loophole did not allow the public administration to ban manifestations registered in the so-called “simplified mode”, and it was exactly the mode in which the activists of TAMA and OSA registered their assemblies. It enabled them to refute the illegal bans on manifestations in court dozens of times. Unfortunately, as I already mentioned, the police used force to not allow for the execution of these court verdicts to take place.
In the meantime, a bit farther on the same route, next to the Bristol Hotel, around Karowa Street and the monument of Bolesław Prus, the counter-monthiversaries of OSA took place. This is where Kaczyński heard the “liar” yell uttered by hundreds and, at times, thousands of throats.
It was a bitter victory of the opposition that, according to the court verdicts, the Smoleńsk gatherings were not public assemblies (which should be open to all of the public and not take place behind a metal fence), but „private PiS events”. It was, however, the opposition that fell victim of the police violence and repressions.
By April 2017, PiS supporters had already assaulted a few members of Obywatele RP and used flag poles to attack Maciej Bajkowski at OSA’s manifestation. They also destroyed OSA’s equipment that time. Curiously enough, the police were nowhere to be seen specifically around the time of assault. The attackers never paid the consequences.
In May 2017, the Smoleńsk crowd, acting upon the encouragement on the part of PiS deputy Aneta Czerwińska, almost lynched two activists of the Women’s Strike, Elwira Borowiec and Angelika Domańska, who dared to raise two white roses- the symbol of protest against PiS - in the presence of Kaczyński. In the meantime, an extensive police action prevented OSA activists from delivering the sound system to the place of its legal demonstration. Members of OSA were followed and all their vehicles carrying the equipment were stopped by the police.
A month later, in June 2017, in reaction to these unlawful actions, Obywatele RP organised a blockade of the Smoleńsk march. Many well-known and esteemed people, including the famous leader of the underground Solidarity movement, Władysław Frasyniuk, participated in the blockade. Frasyniuk also ended up on trial for his defense of the rule of law in Poland. The women’s groups joined the monthiversaries as a response to the May assault on their activists. The members of the Women’s Strike participated in the blockade and in a march that was meant to protect the equipment of OSA from being confiscated.
Photos from the blockade, portraying Władysław Frasyniuk being carried out by the police, went viral. The world froze in astonishment at the sight of PiS-style democracy.
In July 2017, OSA and Obywatele RP tried to secure their legal manifestation spot a few days before the monthiversary. According to final court rulings, they had the right to protest in front of the Presidential Palace. They were, however, chased away from there by the police. Activists of OSA symbolically carried a copy of the Constitution from the President’s headquarters. After all, it was no longer in force in the territory occupied by “PiS-land” law enforcement…
Victory of the citizens
Completely unexpectedly, in August 2017, when PiS finally understood that the cost of their rallies had begun to exceed the political and reputational benefits, a turn of events took place. We saw it as our victory! Suddenly, the chairman of PiS announced that “in eight months the last monthiversary would take place” and at the same time, he resigned from what he had promised his followers; first and foremost, from “discovering the truth about the assassination”, but also from building monuments in front of the Presidential Palace and the Bristol Hotel. Those monuments were supposed to glorify the victims of the Smoleńsk air crash and mark a place for the eternal cult of PiS. Eventually, the monument is built at an express pace, but not where, against the will of the inhabitants of Warsaw, PiS demanded to put it, but on the Piłsudski Square, which is deceitfully taken away from the city authority by the government under the pretext of “reasons of national security”.
And so, the citizens of Poland managed to defend a common public space, which the authority had been unlawfully occupying for three years and wanted to seize for good. The truth was that the citizens had to endure nine more months of struggle with the apparatus of state coercion. Many of them were subject to repressions and fell victims of violence, but the primary goal was achieved: the vile, hateful PiS rallies ended on the 10th of April 2018. The time of the metal fences of shame in the very heart of our capital was over.
We achieved it on our own, with no one’s help. We finally regained our identity – the power stemming from consistent unification in fundamental matters, and this, in other words – freedom, cannot be taken away from us. Freedom is in us!

Katastrofa smoleńska – wypadek lotniczy, w którym 10 kwietnia 2010 roku zginęło 96 osób, w tym prezydent RP Lech Kaczyński oraz wielu członków polskiej elity politycznej – dla Jarosława Kaczyńskiego, prezesa PiS i brata zmarłego prezydenta, od samego początku stała się środkiem do jednoczenia swoich zwolenników w nienawiści do wszystkich przeciwników politycznych. Stanowiła fundament kłamliwej narracji o zdrajcach narodu i mordercach na usługach obcych potęg.
Garstka milcząco przeciw całej potędze państwa
Podczas organizowanych co miesiąc marszów smoleńskich tłum fanatycznych zwolenników PiS przemierzał trasę z bazyliki archikatedralnej św. Jana Chrzciciela na Starym Mieście w Warszawie pod Pałac Prezydencki przy Krakowskim Przedmieściu, żeby tam uczestniczyć w politycznym wiecu. Na każdym z nich z ust przemawiających polityków PiS nie padały słowa o ofiarach tragedii, których pamięć rzekomo mieli czcić, lecz obelgi i kłamliwe oszczerstwa wobec tych współobywateli, którzy nie zgadzają się na nacjonalizm, bezprawie i faktyczne wyprowadzanie kraju z Unii Europejskiej. Gdy w 2015 roku PiS przejął władzę, te seanse nienawiści zyskały status uroczystości państwowych. Do ich ochrony i dla podniesienia ich rangi zaangażowano tysiące funkcjonariuszy policji, wojska i innych służb. Każde wystąpienie prezesa zaczęto transmitować w zawłaszczonych przez partię mediach publicznych, traktując je jako oficjalne stanowisko państwa polskiego, wykładnia jego polityki. Z tej trybuny w świat szedł całkowicie sfałszowany i zakłamany przekaz o naszej historii i współczesności, mający pozbawić opozycję w oczach PiS-owskiego elektoratu ludzkiej twarzy.
Dlatego w marcu 2016 roku niewielka na początku grupka obywatelek i obywateli postanowiła milcząco zaprotestować przeciwko sianiu nienawiści przez partię rządzącą, stając twarzą w twarz ze złem tam, gdzie biło jego symboliczne serce. Gdzie pod pozorem modlitw i żałoby, wzywano do rozprawy z każdym, w gotowości do wykluczenia ze wspólnoty obywatelskiej każdego, kto śmie sprzeciwiać się prezesowi i jego pomagierom. Przez długi czas chodnik na Krakowskim Przedmieściu przed Pałacem Prezydenckim był właściwie jedynym miejscem, gdzie dokonywała się symboliczna konfrontacja między dwiema Polskami: Polską otwartą, tolerancyjną, demokratyczną, która nie wznosiła żadnych okrzyków, dzierżąc jedynie transparenty ze słowami zmarłego prezydenta Lecha Kaczyńskiego, zadającymi kłam temu, co Jarosław Kaczyński wyczynia z pamięcią o swoim bracie i demokratycznym państwem prawa, oraz Polską o twarzy wykrzywionej nienawiścią, lżącą i plującą (dosłownie) na każdego, kto nie podziela niegodziwych utopii PiS.
Od braku poparcia po czynny udział:
rola „kontrmiesięcznic” w jednoczeniu opozycji obywatelskiej
Obywatelskie protesty przed Pałacem Prezydenckim długo były ignorowane nie tylko przez władzę, ale i przez opozycję w rozumieniu zarówno partii politycznych, głównych mediów prodemokratycznych, jak i liderów największej wówczas społecznej organizacji opozycyjnej – Komitetu Obrony Demokracji (KOD). Mimo to jej członkowie pojawiali się na Krakowskim Przedmieściu właściwie od samego początku.
To właśnie tam narodził się zasłużony dla obrony wartości demokratycznych ruch Obywateli RP, stamtąd wzięło się stowarzyszenie Obywatele Solidarnie w Akcji (OSA), tam zaistniała chwalebnie w świadomości opinii publicznej grupa TAMA (i TAMA-Wawa), to tam po wielu miesiącach ramię w ramię stanęli wreszcie przeciw PiS-owskiemu bezprawiu członkowie różnych organizacji opozycyjnych: Strajku Kobiet, KOD, Wolnych i Równych (WiR), Protestu Kobiet, Straży Obywatelskiej, Studenckiego Komitetu Antyfaszystowskiego, Odnowy, Wolności i Demokracji i wielu innych.
Nie zwiodła ich propaganda władzy, w której pokojowe protesty – fundament demokracji – to awantury, podczas których „z ust opętanych komunistów i złodziei dobywa się szatański bełkot”, nie wystraszyły policyjne represje i przemoc – z własnego doświadczenia bowiem znali siłę i smak solidarności, jaka rodzi się jedynie skutkiem wspólnego działania w słusznej sprawie. Mimo wielu różnic i podziałów, naturalnych w polityce, uczestnicy tych wydarzeń wiedzą więc, że mogą na siebie liczyć, niezależnie z jakiej są organizacji.
Eskalacja bezprawia i przemocy władzy
Obywatele RP, czyli środowisko, które od samego początku zajmowało się organizowaniem „kontrmiesięcznic”, zawsze dbali o to, by manifestacje były zgłaszane zgodnie z wymogami prawa, czego nie dopełniała pełna pychy i poczucia wszechmocy władza. Zgodnie z prawem to kontrmanifestacje były legalnymi zgromadzeniami publicznymi, mającymi pierwszeństwo przed smoleńskimi seansami nienawiści. Tego władza znieść nie mogła i dlatego postanowiła zmienić ustawę o zgromadzeniach tak, żeby – likwidując de facto konstytucyjne prawo obywateli do demonstracji – zapewnić sobie monopol na igrzyska na Krakowskim Przedmieściu każdego 10 dnia miesiąca, w „miesięcznicę” katastrofy, którą nazwała bez żadnych dowodów zamachem, aby oczernić swoich przeciwników politycznych. Chodziło w tym jedynie o to, by usunąć sprzed oczu Jarosława Kaczyńskiego kontrmanifestantów wypominających mu co miesiąc milcząco, że kłamie. Przyjęcie przez PiS-owską większość w parlamencie tego ustawowego bezprawia zbiegło się w czasie (jesień 2016) z barbarzyńską decyzją o ekshumacji wszystkich ofiar katastrofy, także tych, których rodziny kategorycznie się temu sprzeciwiały. Ekshumacje te podjęto mimo pełnej świadomości, że odpowiednie badania podjęto już wcześniej i nie było nawet żadnych poszlak, które potwierdzałyby fantastyczne teorie o zamachu. Skargę rodzin na działania PiS-owskiej prokuratury rozpatrzył 20 września br. Europejski Trybunał Praw Człowieka, działania polskich władz uznano za sprzeczne z Europejską Konwencją Praw Człowieka.
Te wszystkie wydarzenia doprowadziły do tego, że grudniu 2016 roku organizatorzy protestów obywatelskich po raz pierwszy postanowili skorzystać ze swoich praw do demonstrowania w zarejestrowanym przez siebie czasie i miejscu (do tamtej pory manifestacje opozycji ustępowały „miesięcznicom”: w imię tego, by nie eskalować konfliktu, ustawiano się z własnej woli po przeciwnej stronie ulicy). Postanowiono nie dopuścić do wiecu PiS pod Pałacem Prezydenckim. Żądano cofnięcia bezprawnej nowelizacji ustawy i wstrzymania ekshumacji.
Obywatelki i obywatele zostali wtedy pierwszy raz przemocą usunięci z miejsca swojej legalnej demonstracji przez bojówki PiS i współpracującą z nimi policję i inne służby państwowe. Od tej pory przemoc i bezprawie władzy na Krakowskim Przedmieściu stały się jawne.
Tego też dnia, 10 grudnia 2106 roku, potraktowany brutalnie tłum kontrmanifestantów po raz pierwszy przerwał swój milczący protest. Anegdota powiada, że w trakcie nienawistnego przemówienia prezesa Kaczyńskiego nie wytrzymał syn pierwszego niekomunistycznego premiera RP Tadeusza Mazowieckiego, który wykrzyknął „kłamca!”, co ludzie podchwycili i skandowali potem na każdej kontrmiesięcznicy, gdy tylko szef PiS zaczynał przemawiać.
Za wznoszenie tego okrzyku wiele osób policja stawiała potem przed sądami, które zawsze jednak uniewinniały manifestantów.
Czas stalowych barier
Symbolem PiS w Polsce stały się metalowe barierki, którymi od grudnia 2016 roku permanentnie ogrodzony jest z powodu strachu władzy przed obywatelami parlament, a które co miesiąc wyznaczały w samym historycznym centrum stolicy „eksterytorialny” korytarz, którym w każdą „miesięcznicę smoleńską” pod ochroną tysięcy policjantów poruszać się mogli jedynie członkowie najwyższych władz partii i ich najwierniejsi zwolennicy.
Ten korytarz nazwano Aleją Hańby, a barierki służyły opozycji za miejsce do ekspozycji haseł w obronie praworządności, wolności, praw człowieka i demokracji. Za to oraz za okrzyki typu „Lech Wałęsa!”, „wolność, równość, demokracja!” lub za machanie białą różą, uznaną przez prezesa PiS za symbol nienawiści i głupoty. Policja na rozkaz władzy stawiała za wyżej opisane „przestępstwa” setki ludzi przed sądem, pod pozorem legitymowania godzinami bezprawnie przetrzymywała i brutalnie znosiła z trasy przemarszu zwolenników władzy.
Wolne i niezależne sądy, które właśnie politycy PiS przejmują, zawsze stawały po stronie konstytucyjnego prawa do wolności wyrażania poglądów i umarzały postępowania w sprawach absurdalnych oskarżeń, jednocześnie wydając prawomocne wyroki, że mają oni prawo protestować tam, gdzie chcą, a zakazy wydawane przez władzę są nie tylko bezprawiem, ale wręcz przestępstwem. Niestety Polska to pod władzą PiS kraj, gdzie do wykonania prawomocnych wyroków sądów nie dopuszcza policja państwowa.
Rok 2017 na Krakowskim Przedmieściem upłynął właśnie na pokojowej obronie prawa przez obywateli przed łamiącą je władzą i jej zbrojnym ramieniem.
Pole bitwy
W ubiegłym roku kontrmiesięcznice organizowane były w trzech punktach na trasie przemarszu pochodu smoleńskiego – przez trzech różnych organizatorów.
Na placu Zamkowym i w jego pobliżu odbywały się najliczniejsze demonstracje Obywateli RP, którzy w proteście przeciwko bezprawiu PiS postanowili nie rejestrować swoich zgromadzeń, uznając, że żadna ustawa ograniczająca ich konstytucyjne prawa, nie jest zgodna z prawem.
Z kolei w okolicy placu Zamkowego, przy skwerze Hoovera, odbywały się stosunkowo nieliczne, ale ważne manifestacje grupy TAMA (i potem TAMA-Wawa), ważne dlatego, że to właśnie działacze tego środowiska (m.in. z niezłomnym w walce o praworządność Dariuszem Kornackim) stwierdzili, że PiS-owska nowelizacja prawa o zgromadzeniach jest nie tylko niekonstytucyjna, ale wręcz zawiera w sobie lukę, która nie pozwala administracji państwowej zakazywać manifestacji zgłoszonych w trybie uproszczonym, wedle którego zgłaszali do rejestru aktywiści TAMY i Obywateli Solidarnie w Akcji (OSA), co pozwoliło w sądach kilkadziesiąt razy obalić bezprawne zarządzenia zakazujące obywatelom legalnych manifestacji. Niestety, jak już wspominałem, policja siłą nie dopuszczała do wykonania tych wyroków.
Jednocześnie na tym samym szlaku, ale nieco dalej, w pobliżu hotelu Bristol, w rejonie ulicy Karowej i pomnika Bolesława Prusa, odbywały się kontrmiesięcznice OSA. To stamtąd prezes słyszał „kłamcę” wykrzyczanych z setek, a czasem i tysięcy gardeł.
Gorzkim zwycięstwem opozycji było to, że orzeczeniach sądów uznano, iż to manifestacje władzy nie są w rozumieniu ustawy zgromadzeniami publicznymi (gdyż takie powinny być otwarte dla wszystkich, a nie odbywać się za stalowym płotem), lecz „prywatnymi imprezami PiS”. Tymczasem to jednak opozycja poddana zostaje fali policyjnych represji i aktom przemocy.
Już w kwietniu 2017 zwolennicy PiS napadli na kilku członków Obywateli RP i zaatakowali drzewcami od polskich flag Macieja Bajkowskiego na manifestacji OSA, niszcząc przy okazji sprzęt stowarzyszenia. Co bardzo wymowne, policja na czas napadu zniknęła. Napastnicy nie ponieśli żadnych konsekwencji.
W maju 2017 w wyniku zachęty posłanki PiS Anety Czerwińskiej tłum smoleński prawie zlinczował działaczki Strajku Kobiet – Elwirę Borowiec i Angelikę Domańską, które śmiały w obecności prezesa unieść do góry symbol oporu przeciw PiS – białe róże. W tym samym czasie szeroko zakrojona akcja policji uniemożliwiła dostarczenie na miejsce legalnej manifestacji nagłośnienia OSA – śledzono i zatrzymano wszystkie samochody, którymi Stowarzyszenie wiozło sprzęt.
Miesiąc później, w czerwcu 2017 roku, Obywatele RP w odpowiedzi na te akty bezprawia organizują blokadę marszu smoleńskiego, w której bierze udział wiele znanych i cenionych osób, w tym słynny lider podziemnej „Solidarności” z czasów komunistycznego reżimu Władysław Frasyniuk – on też wyląduje za obronę praworządności przed sądem. W kontrmiesięcznice, w związku z majowym atakiem na swoje działaczki, włączają się oficjalnie środowiska kobiece – członkinie Strajku Kobiet biorą udział w blokadzie i w marszu, który ma ochronić przed konfiskatą nagłośnienie OSA.
Zdjęcia z blokady zorganizowanej przez Obywateli RP, na których widać wynoszonego Władysława Frasyniuka, obiegają świat, który zastyga w zdumieniu na widok PiS-owskiej „demokracji”.
W lipcu 2017 roku OSA i Obywatele RP usiłują już na kilka dni przed nadchodzącą „miesięcznicą” zająć miejsce swoich legalnych manifestacji pod Pałacem Prezydenckim, do czego mają prawo, zgodnie w prawomocnymi wyrokami sądów. Zostają jednak stamtąd siłą przepędzeni przez policję. Obywatele Solidarni w Akcji symbolicznie wynoszą spod siedziby prezydenta egzemplarz Konstytucji, która na terenie okupowanego przez siły porządkowe „PiS-landu” już de facto nie obowiązuje...
Wygrana obywatelek i obywateli
Zupełnie niespodziewanie, w sierpniu 2017 roku, kiedy do PiS dociera, że polityczny i wizerunkowy koszt wieców na Krakowskim Przedmieściu zaczyna przerastać płynące z nich zyski, następuje zwrot akcji, który uznajemy za wygraną! Raptem prezes ogłasza, że za 8 miesięcy odbędzie się ostatnia „miesięcznica smoleńska”, rezygnując przy tym z tego, co obiecywał swoim wyznawcom, po pierwsze: z „dojścia do prawdy o zamachu”, po drugie: z pomników, które miały pod Pałacem Prezydenckim i przy hotelu Bristol głosić chwałę PiS-owskich ofiar katastrofy oraz stać się miejscem wiecznego kultu partii. Pomniki wprawdzie staną w ekspresowym tempie, ale nie tam, gdzie żądał tego PiS, wbrew woli warszawiaków, lecz na placu Piłsudskiego, podstępem zagarniętym przez rząd władzom miasta pod pozorem „względów obronności państwa”.
Obywatelkom i Obywatelom udaje się zatem obronić wspólną przestrzeń publiczną, którą chciała zagarnąć i przez lata zagarniała bezprawnie władza. Wprawdzie czekało ich jeszcze 9 miesięcy walki z aparatem przymusu państwowego, wiele osób nadal było poddawanych represjom i padało ofiarą przemocy, jednak osiągnięto cel podstawowy: plugawe, nienawistne wiece PiS skończyły się w dniu 10 kwietnia 2018 roku. Skończył się czas stalowych barierek hańby w samym centrum stolicy.
Dokonaliśmy tego sami, bez niczyjej pomocy, odzyskaliśmy wreszcie swą podmiotowość – moc płynącą z konsekwentnej solidarności w sprawach fundamentalnych, i tego, czyli wolności, nikt już nam nie zabierze. Wolność jest w nas!

Translation - English Smoleńsk counter-monthiversaries – an example of effective, peaceful resistance of citizens against the violence of the authoritarian rule of the Law and Justice party (PiS)
The Smoleńsk air crash, in which on the 10th of April 2010, 96 people died, including the president of Poland Lech Kaczyński and many representatives of the Polish political elite – from the very beginning was used by Jarosław Kaczyński, the head of PiS and the brother of the deceased president as means of unification in hatred towards all his political opponents. It constituted the foundation of a false narrative of “traitors of the nation and murderers at the service of foreign powers”.
A silent handful against the entire might of the state
During the Smoleńsk marches organised every month, a crowd of fanatic PiS supporters walked from the St John’s Archcathedral in the Old Town in Warsaw to the Presidential Palace at Krakowskie Przedmieście in order to participate in a political rally. At each rally, PiS politicians would not dedicate a word to the victims of the tragedy, the memory of which they were meant to honour. Instead, they uttered insults and words of deceitful slander towards those co-citizens, who do not agree with nationalism, lawlessness and actions leading to the withdrawal of Poland from the EU. In 2015, when PiS took power, those hateful rituals gained the status of state celebrations. Thousands of officers of the police, the army and other state services were involved with the protecting of the events and raising their profile. Each speech of Kaczyński used to be broadcast in the state media, hijacked by the ruling party, and treated as an official position of the Polish state and the one and only interpretation of its politics. A completely falsified and deceitful message about Polish history and modern days was reaching the masses. That message was meant to deprive opposition of a human face in the eyes of PiS supporters.
That is why in March 2016, an initially small group of citizens decided to protest against the spread of hatred from the ruling party and stood face to face with evil, exactly where it's symbolical heart beat. Where, under the disguise of prayers and mourning, people were called to confront those who dared to oppose the head of PiS and his sidekicks; where, for the same reason, people were called to exclude their fellow citizens from society. For a long time, the pavement in front of the Presidential Palace was actually the only place where a symbolical confrontation between two types of Poland would take place. The first Poland – open, tolerant, democratic, the one that does not yell and merely stands in silence holding banners with the words of president Lech Kaczyński, words that disproved what Jarosław Kaczyński was doing with the memory of his brother, with a democratic country of law; stood in front of the second Poland – the one with a face crooked with hatred, insulting and spitting (literally) everyone who does not share the belief in the wicked utopia of PiS.
From lack of support to active engagement: the role of counter-monthiversaries in the unification of street opposition
The civil protests in front of the Presidential Palace were ignored for a long time, not only by the authorities but also the opposition, meaning – the political parties, main pro-democratic media, as well as the leaders of, what was at the time, the largest opposition organization – Komitet Obrony Demokracji (The Committee of Defense of Democracy). Despite that, some members of this organization used to appear at Krakowskie Przedmieście from the beginning.
It was there, where Obywatele RP – a movement accomplished in the area of defense of democratic values, was born. It was from there that Obywatele Solidarni w Akcji (Citizens United in Action) association came to existence. It was there that TAMA (and TAMA-Warsaw) group gained a praiseworthy position in the public awareness. It was there, where finally, after many months, members of various opposition organizations such as Strajk Kobiet (Women’s Strike), KOD, Wolni i Równi (Free and Equal), Protest Kobiet (Women’s Protest), Straż Obywatelska (Citizens’ Guard), Studencki Komitet Anty-faszystowski (Student Anti-fascist Committee), Odnowa, Wolność i Demokracja (Freedom and Democracy) stood side by side against the lawlessness of PiS.
They were not misled by the ruling party’s propaganda that portrayed a peaceful protest – the foundation of democracy – as mayhem during which „from the lips of possessed communists and thieves comes satanic gabble”. They were not scared by the police repression and violence; they knew the power and taste of solidarity that arises only as a result of common action for the right cause, from their own experience. Despite many differences and divisions – a natural thing in politics – until today the participants of those events know that they can count on each other, no matter which organization they belong to.
Escalation of lawlessness and violence of the authority
Obywatele RP, the group that since the very beginning was responsible for organizing the counter-monthiversaries, always ensured that their demonstrations were registered in accordance to law, in contrast to the way the arrogant, entitled authority. According to law, it was the counter-manifestations that were legal public assemblies and they had priority in front of the Smoleńsk rituals of hatred. The authority could not bear it and thus it changed the bill on public assembly. As a matter of fact, by doing so, the authority abolished the constitutional right of Polish citizens to demonstrate and ensured it would have a monopoly for events at Krakowskie Przedmieście on each 10th day of the month, that is on each monthiversary of the air crash, which, with no evidence, they called an assassination in order to besmirch their political opponents. It was all done to remove the counter-demonstrators who gathered each month and silently reminded Kaczyński that he was lying, in front of his own eyes. The time when PiS parliamentary majority passed this unlawful bill coincided with their barbaric decision on the exhumation of all of the Smoleńsk air crash victims, including those whose families categorically opposed it. The exhumations were carried out, despite full awareness that adequate investigation had been conducted before, and without any lead proving the incredible assassination theories. On the 20th of September 2018, the European Court of Human Rights examined the complaint of families against the actions of the PiS prosecutor’s office and ruled that they had violated the European Convention on Human Rights.
Due to all of this, in December 2016, the organisers of civil protests decided to use their right to demonstrate at the time and in the place registered by them for the first time. Until then, in order not to escalate the conflict, the opposition’s manifestations would always give way to the monthiversaries and voluntarily move to the other side of the street. It was decided not to allow for the PiS rally to take place in front of the Presidential Palace. The protesters demanded a withdrawal of the unlawful amendment to the bill, and suspension of the exhumations.
This was the first time when citizens, men and women were removed from the spot of their legal demonstration by force. PiS troops in cooperation with the police and other law enforcement were used for this purpose. Since then, the authorities openly acted in violent and unlawful ways at Krakowskie Przedmieście.
It was also that day, on the 10th of December 2016, when the crowd of protesters, having been brutally treated by the authorities, broke its silent protest. It is said that it was the son of the first democratic prime minister of Poland, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, who exclaimed “Liar” during one of Kaczyński’s hateful speeches. People immediately picked it up and chanted the same words on each monthiversary, as soon as the chairman of PiS began his speech.
This yell became a reason for the police to open cases against many citizens. The courts, however, always acquitted the protesters.
The time of metal fences
Metal fences, which since December 2016, due to the authorities’ fear, permanently fence the parliament off the citizens, became the symbol of PiS in Poland. Each month, in the very historical centre of the capital, metal barriers marked an extra-territorial corridor, reserved only for the elite of the ruling party and its most loyal supporters, walking under the protection of thousands of police officers.
People named this corridor “The Avenue of Shame”. The fences were used by the opposition to display slogans in defense of the rule of law, freedom, human rights and democracy. This and anything else, for instance, “Lech Wałęsa” and “freedom, equality, democracy” chants or waving a white rose, deemed as a symbol of hatred and stupidity by Kaczyński, was considered an offence by the authorities. Acting upon the orders of the authorities, the police brought hundreds of people to trial for above-mentioned “crimes”. They would also unlawfully surround and contain protesters for hours as well as brutally remove them from the route of the supporters of the ruling party.
The free, independent Polish courts, currently being hijacked by PiS politicians, always defended the constitutional right to freedom of expression and discontinued proceedings in cases based on absurd charges. At the same time, the courts would issue final sentences confirming that citizens have the right to protest where they want and that the bans issued by the authorities are not only unlawful but, actually, illegal. Unfortunately, Poland under the rule of PiS is a country, where the police prevents the execution of final court judgments.
It was precisely this, the citizens’ peaceful defense of law against its violation by the authority and its armed branch, that 2017 at Krakowskie Przedmieście was dedicated to.
The battlefield
Last year, three different groups organized counter-monthiversaries in three different spots on the route of the Smoleńsk march.
The largest demonstrations took place at Castle Square and its surroundings. They were organized by Obywatele RP, who decided not to register their assemblies in protest against the lawlessness of PiS. They believed that no bill limiting their constitutional rights was lawful.
Smaller but very significant manifestations by TAMA group (and later TAMA-Wawa) were taking place next to Hoover’s Square. Their significance lied in the fact that it was the activists of this group (including steadfast defender of the rule of law – Dariusz Kornacki), who claimed that the PiS amendment of the right to the freedom of assembly was not only unconstitutional, but also included a legal loophole. The loophole did not allow the public administration to ban manifestations registered in the so-called “simplified mode”, and it was exactly the mode in which the activists of TAMA and OSA registered their assemblies. It enabled them to refute the illegal bans on manifestations in court dozens of times. Unfortunately, as I already mentioned, the police used force to not allow for the execution of these court verdicts to take place.
In the meantime, a bit farther on the same route, next to the Bristol Hotel, around Karowa Street and the monument of Bolesław Prus, the counter-monthiversaries of OSA took place. This is where Kaczyński heard the “liar” yell uttered by hundreds and, at times, thousands of throats.
It was a bitter victory of the opposition that, according to the court verdicts, the Smoleńsk gatherings were not public assemblies (which should be open to all of the public and not take place behind a metal fence), but „private PiS events”. It was, however, the opposition that fell victim of the police violence and repressions.
By April 2017, PiS supporters had already assaulted a few members of Obywatele RP and used flag poles to attack Maciej Bajkowski at OSA’s manifestation. They also destroyed OSA’s equipment that time. Curiously enough, the police were nowhere to be seen specifically around the time of assault. The attackers never paid the consequences.
In May 2017, the Smoleńsk crowd, acting upon the encouragement on the part of PiS deputy Aneta Czerwińska, almost lynched two activists of the Women’s Strike, Elwira Borowiec and Angelika Domańska, who dared to raise two white roses- the symbol of protest against PiS - in the presence of Kaczyński. In the meantime, an extensive police action prevented OSA activists from delivering the sound system to the place of its legal demonstration. Members of OSA were followed and all their vehicles carrying the equipment were stopped by the police.
A month later, in June 2017, in reaction to these unlawful actions, Obywatele RP organised a blockade of the Smoleńsk march. Many well-known and esteemed people, including the famous leader of the underground Solidarity movement, Władysław Frasyniuk, participated in the blockade. Frasyniuk also ended up on trial for his defense of the rule of law in Poland. The women’s groups joined the monthiversaries as a response to the May assault on their activists. The members of the Women’s Strike participated in the blockade and in a march that was meant to protect the equipment of OSA from being confiscated.
Photos from the blockade, portraying Władysław Frasyniuk being carried out by the police, went viral. The world froze in astonishment at the sight of PiS-style democracy.
In July 2017, OSA and Obywatele RP tried to secure their legal manifestation spot a few days before the monthiversary. According to final court rulings, they had the right to protest in front of the Presidential Palace. They were, however, chased away from there by the police. Activists of OSA symbolically carried a copy of the Constitution from the President’s headquarters. After all, it was no longer in force in the territory occupied by “PiS-land” law enforcement…
Victory of the citizens
Completely unexpectedly, in August 2017, when PiS finally understood that the cost of their rallies had begun to exceed the political and reputational benefits, a turn of events took place. We saw it as our victory! Suddenly, the chairman of PiS announced that “in eight months the last monthiversary would take place” and at the same time, he resigned from what he had promised his followers; first and foremost, from “discovering the truth about the assassination”, but also from building monuments in front of the Presidential Palace and the Bristol Hotel. Those monuments were supposed to glorify the victims of the Smoleńsk air crash and mark a place for the eternal cult of PiS. Eventually, the monument is built at an express pace, but not where, against the will of the inhabitants of Warsaw, PiS demanded to put it, but on the Piłsudski Square, which is deceitfully taken away from the city authority by the government under the pretext of “reasons of national security”.
And so, the citizens of Poland managed to defend a common public space, which the authority had been unlawfully occupying for three years and wanted to seize for good. The truth was that the citizens had to endure nine more months of struggle with the apparatus of state coercion. Many of them were subject to repressions and fell victims of violence, but the primary goal was achieved: the vile, hateful PiS rallies ended on the 10th of April 2018. The time of the metal fences of shame in the very heart of our capital was over.
We achieved it on our own, with no one’s help. We finally regained our identity – the power stemming from consistent unification in fundamental matters, and this, in other words – freedom, cannot be taken away from us. Freedom is in us!

Wykorzystanie metody MPM do diagnostyki rurociągów gazowych
ABSTRAKT
W artykule przedstawiono wykorzystanie metody MPM do diagnostyki rurociągów gazowych będących w eksploatacji. Względy bezpieczeństwa i przepisy z tym związane ograniczają możliwości w zakresie przygotowania rurociągów do badań, jaki i zastosowanie części metod badań nieniszczących. W związku z tym, konieczne jest opracowanie metodyki badawczej rurociągów gazowych mającej na uwadze tego typu ograniczenia. Firma Energodiagnostyka Sp. z o.o. przeprowadza badania grupy rurociągów gazowych cyklicznie od ponad 4 lat, co pozwoliło na wypracowanie skutecznej ich diagnostyki, której istotnym elementem są badania z wykorzystaniem metody magnetycznej pamięci metalu (MPM). Artykuł zawiera doświadczenia z badań rurociągów gazowych na przestrzeni kilku lat. Wykorzystanie MPM w powiązaniu z innymi metodami badań nieniszczących pozwala wg autorów na skuteczne i bezpieczne przeprowadzenie diagnostyki mającej na celu nie dopuszczenie do awarii oraz monitorowanie stanu technicznego badanych urządzeń. Metoda MPM dzięki zaletom takim jak szybkość kontroli, brak konieczności przygotowania powierzchni do badań, wskazywanie obszarów rurociągów, w których rozwijają się procesy zmęczeniowe stanowi bardzo istotny element całego procesu badawczego. Z kolei cykliczność takich badań pozwala na obserwowanie kierunku i szybkości zmian procesów zmęczeniowych zachodzących w badanych elementach. Pozostałe metody badań nieniszczących (badania prądami wirowymi, badania ultradźwiękowe phased array, TOFD, badania metalograficzne, pomiary twardości, badania wizualne wideoendoskopem) pozwalają na detekcję uszkodzeń i niezgodności w miejscach koncentracji naprężeń. Dobre rezultaty uzyskanych wyników badań pozwalają na planowanie napraw lub wymian wadliwych elementów rurociągów, co wg. autorów pozwala znacząco podnieść bezpieczeństwo eksploatacji instalacji gazowych

The use of the MMM method in gas pipelines diagnostics.
A summary
The purpose of this article is to present the use of the MMM method in diagnostics of gas pipelines while in operation. Safety issues and regulations reduce the possibilities of preparing the pipelines for inspection as well as limit the application of some of the non-destructive testing methods. It is, therefore, necessary to develop methodology of gas pipelines testing that takes these limitations into consideration.
Energodiagnostyka Ltd. has been conducting inspections of a group of gas pipelines for over four consecutive years now. This experience has enabled them to create an effective diagnostics approach with a significant element at its core, that is, testing incorporating the magnetic metal memory method. The article is based on the experienced gained during gas pipelines inspections conducted in the last several years. According to the article’s authors the usage of MMM method in combination with other non-destructive testing methods enables the conduct of effective and safe diagnostics focused on monitoring the technical condition of the inspected elements as well as preventing their technical failures.
The MMM method is very advantageous as it makes it possible for the inspection to be performed fast and without the need to prepare the surface beforehand. Moreover, it pinpoints the areas of the pipelines where the fatigue processes occur and thus constitutes a very important part of the entire testing process.
Conducting the assessments/inspections on regular basis, on the other hand, makes it possible to monitor the direction and pace of the fatigue processes occurring in the assessed elements. The other non-destructive testing methods such as eddy current testing, ultrasonic testing, phased array, TOFD, metallographic testing, hardness measurements, visual testing using videoscopes enable the detection of damages and irregularities in the stress concentration zones. Good testing results facilitate necessary repairs and/or replacement of faulty pipeline elements, which according to the authors significantly increases the safety of gas pipelines exploitation.

When it happened that I didn’t do anything to deserve the punishment, when he couldn’t remember any of the so called ‘overdue punishments’, when he couldn’t resort to any of these, he would use proverbs instead of the whip.
- Sour rye soup makes a lad grow tough
He’d say and put a plate filled with his favourite soup in front of me; it was a soup that he’d buy in a plastic bag somewhere around Cemetery street. He’d just pour it out of the bag, heat it up and supplement it with some boiled potatoes. It was a replacement meal whenever mum had to go out for some reason, whenever old K. had to spontaneously come up with something for dinner by himself.
- Sour rye soup and potatoes are the basis; it’s the so-called basic food for those who don’t want to be wimps and you don’t want to be a wimp, do you?
He’d say, while eating his favourite soup, which in the meantime would go cold on my side of the table. I’d try to put off eating it because for me it wasn’t basic food at all, for me it was worse than no dinner at all; it was a dinner that you officially had to consume to the accompaniment of all the fatherly words of wisdom only in order to unofficially, as quietly and carefully as possible, puke it out in the toilet once the meal was over. I really, really didn’t want to be a wimp, but the Silesian sour rye soup from a white plastic bag – the trademark of Cemetery street – tasted like Rawa. At least that’s how I imagined the taste of our town’s sewage, in which any form of life had ceased to exist quarter of a century earlier, which stank so persistently that it’s most annoying local inflow, nostalgically called the Suez Canal had to be concreted. Each sip of the sour rye soup was a sip of Rawa, a soup from the gutter.
- What the hell did you say? Not tasty? Don’t you blaspheme against the rye bread soup, son! Your aunt, uncle and me ate potatoes with sour milk all week long, or the water soup, yes, mainly the water soup, we only ate potatoes with sour milk in the better days...Or panchkraut, do you know what panchkraut is, son? Eat up and I’ll tell you. It’s potatoes with cabbage and the water soup, do you know what that is? It’s bread with water and a bit of garlic. Oh yes, we’re poor...And the sour rye soup, oh the sour rye soup was a treat! It was my absolute favourite. Sour rye soup makes a lad grow tough, only wimps don’t like sour rye soup, eat up, son, eat up, there is no time to waste. And just don’t blaspheme, just don’t...
Old K. would wipe his moustache, put the plate in the sink, pour some water over it and go to brush his teeth; my soup would gradually go cold and the potatoes would still stick above its surface. I’d scoop a bit of this potato island and chew slowly to delay the first contact with the cool suspension. Old K. brushed his teeth. He scrubbed them viciously, rubbed the enamel off, hurt the gums, sometimes to the point of bleeding and then he used to tell me:
- See how to brush your teeth properly? So that blood flows! Not the way you do it; just touch it with the brush once or twice and that’s it.
He brushed his teeth loudly and persistently, just as loudly and persistently as he rinsed his mouth afterwards; he did it repeatedly, each corner of his mouth had to be rinsed precisely and repeatedly; he spat with a splash, put more water in his mouth and rinsed his mouth again, then he also rinsed his throat, just in case, gargling loudly. When I heard that the whole procedure was nearly finished, that he was turning the tap off, wiping his face with a towel, roaring with content, I knew it was high time for me to face the sour rye soup, that it was impossible to delay it anymore, so when he was leaving the bathroom and making his way to the kitchen to check on me I was already eating again; he’d walk in, glance at me and murmur menacingly:
- What, you haven’t finished yet?!
But he saw that I was still eating and as long as I was eating, no matter how slowly, I remained untouchable, so he would leave again and this time he would go to his room to finish reading the papers; the sewage-like liquid poured down my gullet; thick, greasy and cold, I could hear the rattle of cart wheels and the driver calling in the sing- song Silesian manner: ‘Potaaatoes, potaaaatoes!’ outside, but inside my potatoes were still in the sour rye soup, old K. always served me a plate full to the brim and I never managed to have even half of it, however even such amount would end up being immediately puked out in the toilet. I consoled myself with the thought that mum would make a nice supper once she was back but meanwhile I had to eat as much as I could cause old K. was finishing reading the papers and approaching me for the final check.
- So, I hope you’ve finished.
He kept on staring at the plate and shouting:
- What the hell is this supposed to mean, am I raising a wimp?!
But I was already locked in the toilet.
- Damn it, he didn’t eat it again, bloody wimp!- he said yanking the door handle- Why did ya lock the door, just ya wait, one day ya gonna live on bread and water and ya gonna learn what hunger is, ya wimp!
He snapped from behind the door, not caring about the correct grammar anymore, as usual when he was mad, and I was already sticking my fingers down my throat and pouring out the rye bread soup, I was coughing up the Suez Canal and I didn’t even care too much about old K.’s cursing. Only later, once I stopped vomiting and waited for him to calm down some of it’d get through to me.
- As thin as a rake and doesn’t eat on top of that, and this is supposed to be my son?! Oh God, how can you see it and not thunder...He locks himself in the bog on top of that, cowardly wimp...Don’t ya worry, I’m not gonna give ya a beatin’, it’s not worth it, it’s enough to touch ya and ya bleed, ya anaemic wimp, If I pull ya any harder I’m gonna break all yer little bones and go to prison for that. Don’t ya worry, I’m not gonna give ya a beatin’, don’t eat if ya don’t want to, ya gonna be such a weakling that wind is gonna blow ya away, all folks’re gonna kick ya around, ya scrag, no girl’ll ever want ya. Don’t ya worry, anyway, sit in there if ya want, just don’t make any scenes in front of yer mother when she’s back. I won’t give ya a beatin’, life will.
Oh, yes, sometimes instead of the whip, old K. would use proverbs.
However, if he suddenly remembered any of the ‘overdue punishments’ he’d not say anything. Quietly and furtively he’d open the cupboard and take that very whip off the hanger gently, so that I’d not sniff out danger on time, cause if I did sniff it out, he’d have to chase me around the table, and we used to have a big table. He didn’t like to chase me cause I was agile; he’d get tired but somewhat his blows wouldn’t get weaker afterwards, quite contrary, furious that I dared to offer even such tiny, instinctive resistance, that I run around the flat, dummying him, blocking the way with chairs, forcing him to make more effort, exhausting him, he would beat me even more mercilessly, precisely and methodically. Oh, when he finally caught me, he’d be so excited by the chase that he’d even forget to count out the blows, he’d not count out the delivered blows as he normally used to, so I didn’t know how many of them I had to endure. He’d no longer beat me in order to deliver the ‘overdue punishment’ but to punish me for the resistance, for the escape, for the fact that I didn’t approach him, sniff the whip and present my arse as soon as I heard his ‘Come and sniff’. The ‘overdue punishment’ remained overdue, it was just postponed as I’d most probably not be able to endure a double sentence, and now he beat me only for making him short of breath.
One day, for example, I was watching the Ski Jumping World Cup and he just got back home from a walk with our dog and was rustling something in the wardrobe; I thought he was just taking his coat off and putting it away, I didn’t even glance to check cause Weissflog was jumping a hundred and sixteen metres and I was just saying:
- Dad, we have a new record!
Cause I could sense him getting closer and I thought he was just about to sit down and watch the tournament with me, but he was approaching me with the whip and on these occasions, if I didn’t realise that there was something bad afoot, if I didn’t dodge a blow and didn’t manage to slip behind the table or into the hallway, he’d carefully creep up on me from behind as if he was approaching a wild animal. Suddenly he sped up as he ran up to me with little steps, threw himself at me and grabbed my shoulder just when Fijas spat on the sides and made a sign of cross before the jump, before I managed to say:
- Dad, a Pole is jumping, aren’t you gonna look?!
Even if I’d managed to say it, my words wouldn’t have got through to him, the only thing that mattered was:
- The overdue punishment, remember?
And he was already putting me on the couch and pinning me so that the blows could start.
- Didn’t I tell ya ya’ll get a beatin’? - (blow) – I promised ya’ll get it – (blow) – I told ya – (blow) – told ya – (blow) – told ya ya’ll get it – (three blows) – Now remember I don’t waste words.
And then he’d leave me fallen and from behind the wall of pain and defeat I could hear commentator Mrzyglod’s voice:
- Unfortunately, it’s not a good day for our contestant, unfortunately the others proved to be better again...
Unless I managed to dummy him and then even if I did get one in the back when he swung his arm to hit me, the blow wasn’t aimed precisely; and even if I felt the lash on my back for a while, I’d manage to run out into the hallway and I was free, of course unless I didn’t have to go through the unpleasant experience of bumping into a locked door, cause then old K.’d catch me, pleased with his craftiness; he’d catch me and etcetera... So if I was already in the corridor, I’d run down as fast as I could, straight to the front door, in my socks, even in wintertime; and by the time old K. got dressed and put his shoes on I was already hidden in the garden, in our neighbours’ old shed...oh, silly me, my footprints in the snow, he caught me again. And in the summer, oh, silly me, he took my beloved dog forever wagging its tail and caught me, even though I climbed a tree, he climbed to get me, I was already as high as possible, at the top of the crown, the thin branches bent dangerously under my weight, I couldn’t climb any higher and old K. nestled down comfortably two branches lower and lashed my legs with a whip. I cried:
- Dad, I’m gonna fall down!
- No, you’re gonna climb down.
And he whipped me until I climbed down. Only once I started to run away further, into the town, he decided it was humiliating enough for me to be running in the streets barefoot, in the rain.
- Tough luck, who doesn’t obey ones’ parents, will obey the leather belt...
I run away from him; and each time I run from him, I run to my mother.

Bio
I’m a Polish linguist
and polyglot with over ten years of experience in the field of interpreting,
translation and language teaching. I studied Applied Linguistics at Warsaw
University (English and Russian) and later, Russian and East European Studies
(Czech and Slovak) with a special focus on Cinema and Literature at University
College London. I graduated in 2011 with A First-Class Honours, multiple
awards, including The Dean’s List.
Languages are not
only the foundation of my professional life but also one of my greatest
passions. It’s thanks to my linguistic skills that I have always been able to
cultivate my second biggest passion - travelling/hitch-hiking and to reach the
most remote corners of the globe. Travelling, on the other hand, enabled me to
learn additional languages such as Hebrew and later, Spanish and
Portuguese.
I left my home
country at a young age and in the past two decades I have lived in different
countries all across the world, ranging from Russia to United Arab Emirates. In
2014 I settled on the Pacific coast of Ecuador where, together with my
Brazilian husband, I created a no 1 guesthouse in one of the most popular
tourist destinations of Ecuador. Naturally, my language skills are of key
importance in running the business and dealing with clients from all over the
globe.
My in-depth knowledge
of Polish, English, Russian, Czech, Spanish and Portuguese has been
particularly helpful in various types of research and consulting work I’ve been
engaged in for the past 10 years. Most recently I completed a series of
projects (payments and financial markets) for KAE - a top London-based
marketing consulting company specialising in financial consulting.
I am very passionate
about humanitarian work as well as human rights/political activism and I often
contribute to different causes with my fundraising and language skills (mainly
translation and interpreting).
Languages are my
whole life, I use four of them with my closest family (husband and daughter)
and up to eight in my daily life, particularly when dealing with tourists.
