אז איך? נסיעה לירדן. מדינה כ"כ קרובה, כ"כ יפה ומפתיעה, מדהימה ומגוונת.
ארבעה ימים הספיקו לנו לטעום ולראות הרבה מהנוף והאתרים המגוונים ולדעת שרוצים עוד. פגשנו אנשים נחמדים ומסבירי פנים שעושים לנו הישראלים קבלת פנים נפלאה. תודעת השירות לתיירים גבוהה, מאוד שמחים לשוחח ולעזור. הסברת הפנים לנו הישראלים נהדרת, לא פעם בירכו אותנו כבני דודים.
תוכנית הטיול הכילה שלוב של אתרים וטבע רב עוצמה, אתרי עתיקות מדהימים, הליכה בנחלים, רחיצה במעיינות חמים, ביקור בפטרה וטיול ג'יפים במדבר של ואדי ראם.
התחלנו את הטיול במעבר הגבול הצפוני שיח-חוסין ליד בית שאן. עוברים את הגבול המדיני מעל נהר הירדן בנסיעה.
ג'רש מכילה את הריסות העיר הגרקו-רומאית ג'ראסה, החשובה ביותר במזרח הקרוב. העיר הרומית הגדולה, השלמה ושמורה ביותר. אנחנו לא רגילים לעיר כל כך גדולה עם כמות מונומנטים מדהימים, תיאטראות, היפודרום, שערים, מקדשים, רחובות, והמוני עמודים.
בחממת מעיין נובעים מים חמים שיורדים במפלים, הרחצה בבריכות בזמן השקיעה בסופו של יום מרגיעה ומהנה.
הר נבו - לעמוד על הר נבו, למול צפון ים המלח, יריחו ובקעת הירדן, במקום בו עמד משה, ולקרוא בספר דברים "זאת הארץ אשר נשבעתי לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב לאמר לזרעך אתננה הראיתיך בעיניך ושמה לא תעבור", זה מרגש.
מפת מדבא, המפה העתיקה ביותר בה נראית ארץ ישראל ועריה, נעשתה בפסיפס במאה השישית לספירה. לראות את מפת מדבא, בה מופיעה "ירושלים העיר הקדושה" בהגדלה במרכז המפה, זה מאוד מעניין. על פי מפת מדבא, אותר ונחפר הקרדו הביזנטי בעיר העתיקה בירושלים.

לעלות על ההרים מעל פטרה, לצפות אל עבר הור-ההר ולראות את נבי-הרון, מקום קבורתו של אהרון הכהן, ולקרוא בספר במדבר "ויאמר השם אל-משה ואל-אהרן בהר ההר על גבול ארץ-אדום... וימת אהרן שם בראש ההר", זה מרגש.
להבין את מיתוס "הסלע האדום", על רקע השיר מפי אריק לביא, השיר שהיה אסור לשמיעה בשנות ה-50, בהרים הסובבים את פטרה. וזאת תוך כדי תצפית אל עבר הערבה מקום יציאתם של ההולכים לפטרה.
ואדי ראם – בדרום ירדן, בכיוון הגבול הירדני עם ערב הסעודית. לינה באוהלים לאחר ארוחת ערב בדווית מדהימה, באווירת המרחב העצום והשלו של המדבר. נסיעה בג'יפי טויוטה של הבדווים באזור דיונות בין הרים מפוסלים באבן חול, ביקור בקשתות ענקיות, מצודה צרפתית שנועדה ליצירת סרטים ועוד. זהו טבע פראי, הרי גרניט אדירים, דיונות, קניוני אבן חול וכתובות סלע עתיקות.
חזרנו ארצה דרך מעבר ערבה, קרוב לאילת, הפעם עוברים את הגבול רגלית.

Translation - English The classic trip to Jordan
Many tourists take advantage of the opportunity of their Israeli tour and spend a few days in Jordan, our neighbor to the east. Jordan is so close, so beautiful and surprising, unique, and diverse.

The starting point of the tour in Jordan is the northern border crossing Sheikh Hussein near Beit She’an. We will cross the political border over the Jordan River while traveling.
Jerash, containing the ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Jarasa, was once one of the most important cities in the Near East. It is the second most visited site in Jordan, after Petra. Jarash is the largest, most complete, and preserved Roman city to be found in the Middle East; no wonder it was nicknamed ‘Pompeii of the East’. In the city, we can see many astonishing monuments, theaters, hippodrome, gates, temples, streets, and masses of columns.
In Ma'in Hot Springs, we will visit thermal mineral hot springs and waterfalls. Hot water gushes out in waterfalls. Bathing in the pools during the sunset by the end of a day will be a relaxing and enjoyable end of the day.
Mount Nebo – Here is the place where Moses stood, facing west, toward the north end of the Dead Sea, Jericho, and the Jordan Valley. We will read in the book of Deuteronomy: “Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.”
The Madaba map was incorporated into a mosaic floor in the sixth century AD. It is the oldest map depicting the Land of Israel and its cities. Seeing the map of Madaba, which shows ‘the Holy City of Jerusalem’ in the center of the map, is very interesting. The scale of Jerusalem is ten times bigger in comparison to the rest of the map. The archeological excavations conducted in the Old City of Jerusalem after 1967 were partly assisted by the Madaba map. The Byzantine cardo in Jerusalem was found and excavated according to the map as well.
Wadi ‘ibn-Hamad, seeing Judea and Masada across the Dead Sea to the west, while going down in Wadi ‘ibn-Hamad deep gully, is an unusual look. It is the picturesque stream in the Jordan streams, flowing in a canyon containing waterfalls and hanging gardens. Rising from the deep ravine of Wadi ‘ibn-Hamad and watching the sunset over the Judean Mountains through the Moab Mountains, glittering across the Dead Sea, is an unparalleled view.
Petra, the capital of the Nabatean kingdom, is a pearl from the golden age of the Nabateans, during which they created their great wealth. About 1,000 burial monuments and massive temples are carved in colored sandstone rocks. It is difficult to estimate the amount of ant work required to carve in the sandstone these fantastic monuments. The findings are sculpted with Nabatean, Greek, and Roman influences.
Climbing to a-Dir, west of Petra, is terrific. It is a great monument, even more impressive than the famous Chazaneh. The area is reminiscent of the Sinai Mountains. This is as a result of the formation of the Syrian African rift valley. Transjordan moved about 105 km north, in comparison to the western bank of the Jordan river.
If we go up the mountains above Petra, we can look out over Mount Hor and see Nabi Haron, the burial place of Aaron, the High Priest, and read in the bible: " And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying: “Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the children of Israel” (Numbers, 20:23-24).
Wadi Ram – located in southern Jordan, towards the Jordanian border with Saudi Arabia. After a fantastic Bedouin dinner, we will stay overnight in tents, wrapped in the serene atmosphere of the desert. We will ride the Bedouin Toyota Jeep in the sand dune, exploring sculptured mountains around us. Visit massive arches, a French citadel designed for film making, and more. It is wild nature, mighty granite mountains, dunes, sandstone canyons, and ancient rock inscriptions.
We will return to Israel via the Arava crossing, close to Eilat, this time crossing the border on foot.

Source text - Hebrew כולנו שמענו על עדת "השומרונים", אך לא יודעים באמת מי הם ומה מאפיין אותם.
בעודנו שומעים כי השומרונים חוגגים את זבח הפסח ב-28.04.2010, שחל השנה חודש אחרי ערב הפסח שלנו, הסתקרנו והחלטנו לנסוע, לראות, לשמוע ולהבין.
בנסיעה של כשעה מאזור ראש העיין, הגענו אל הר גריזים.
פגשנו אנשים מקסימים, מכניסי אורחים ששמחו לענות לכל שאלותינו. לספר לנו על מוצאם, ההבדלים בינם לבינינו ולשתף אותנו בזבח הפסח שנערך באותו ערב.
השומרונים הינם אחת מעדות ישראל השומרת על ייחודיות ואוטנטיות לאורך אלפי שנים, בעלי המורשת העתיקה ביותר. שומרונים (בשפתם שומרים, שומרי התורה או תורת משה) הם עם קדום וקבוצה אתנית-דתית המבוססת על נוסח ייחודי של התורה. במהלך ההיסטוריה עברו על השומרונים פרעות ומעשי טבח, בעיקר על ידי הביזנטיים ונושאי הצלב, ומעם של עשרות אלפים, שרדו בשנת 1919 כ-150 איש בלבד.
הם חלק מבני ישראל מתקופת המדבר, ומשתייכים לשבטים אפרים, מנשה ולוי. הם לא גלו עם שאר עשרת שבטי ממלכת ישראל, בגלות אשור שאירעה בשנת 722 לפנה"ס. לפי המסורת השומרונית, הם "ישראלים טהורים", נאמנים לדת משה, חלק מעם ישראל ונושאי מורשתו האמיתית. את הפירוד הם תולים בחילוקי הדעות בדבר ה"מקום המובחר" לשם בניית בית המקדש. לדבריהם משה רבנו קבע את קדושתו של הר גריזים, ולכן יהושע בן-נון בנה את המשכן במקום שהם מכנים אותו "גבעות עולם". כאן כיהנו בקודש פינחס בן אליעזר בן אהרון, כהן גדול ובניו. המקדש בימיהם היה בהר גריזים והוכר על ידי כל שבטי ישראל. על הר גריזים נמצא גם "מזבח יצחק", מקום העקדה.
הם מצביעים של שושלת בני אהרון הכהן כפי שמופיע בספר דברי הימים. הספר הקדוש היחיד המוכר על ידם הוא תורת משה שהוכתבה למשה בן עמרם. הם נאמנים לקיום החוקים הכתובים בתורה כלשונה. השינוי העיקרי שבו לעומת התורה שבידי היהודים הוא כי בעשרת הדיברות, בדיבר העשירי, מופיע הנוסח: "ובנית שמה מזבח ליהווה אלוהיך מזבח אבנים". השומרונים אינם מכירים בתורה שבעל פה, ולא במשנה ובתלמוד. כמו כן אין הכרה בנביאים ובכתובים למעט ספר יהושע, השונה מאוד מנוסח המקרא.
השומרונים שומרים את השבת כהלכתה, מחויבים לארץ ישראל, הם חוגגים חגים מקראיים בלבד ומנהגיהם שונים מאלו הנהוגים בעם היהודי. השומרונים מונים את השנים מכניסת בני ישראל לארץ כנען.
הם שומרים על הכתב העברי הקדום ועדיין משתמשים בעברית הקדומה בתפילותיהם.
קהילת השומרונים מונה כיום כ-750 נפש, כמחציתם מתגוררים בחולון והשאר בשכונת לוזה בשכם שבהר גריזים, בסמוך לאתריהם המקודשים. לכל השומרונים יש אזרחות ישראלית. לתושבי קריית לוזה, שנכללת בתחום המוניציפאלי של שכם, יש גם אזרחות פלסטינית. הללו מעורבים בשכניהם הערבים, הילדים לומדים בבתי הספר הערבים שבשכם, כך שהשפה המדוברת ביניהם הינה ערבית, ובנוסף הם לומדים בצורה מאורגנת ומסודרת הן את השפה העברית והן את העברית העתיקה בה משתמשים בעת התפילות. מבחינה כלכלית מעורבים השומרונים בכלכלת הגדה המערבית, ויתכן שנהנים קצת משני העולמות.
זבח הפסח
זבח הפסח הוא החג החשוב ביותר לשומרונים. כל בני העדה מחויבים להיות נוכחים בזבח. השומרונים תושבי חולון עוזבים את בתיהם למשך ימי הפסח, ועוברים לבתיהם בשכונת לוזה.
בימים שלפני הזבח מתחילים בהכנות, קניית כבשים ורחיצתם, והכנת העצים להדלקת האש בתנורים.
הגענו בסביבות השעה שלוש ועלינו לאתר הארכיאולוגי שבפסגת הר גריזים. ראינו את המקום שבו מאמינים השומרונים כי עמד אוהל מועד, "גבעות עולם". ראינו גם את "מזבח יצחק", המקום שבו התרחשה עקדת יצחק.
ירדנו אל מרכז השכונה, אל מתחם הטקס שהתחיל לאט לאט להתמלא. האורחים מתרכזים ביציע האורחים.
באתר הטקס שישה תנורים ענקיים שכבר דלקו, שסביבם הוכנו ערמות עצים שמשמשים לשריפה.
אט אט מתמלא המתחם באנשים. אנשי הקהילה עוברים לבגדים לבנים.
בסביבות השעה חמש מביאים את הכבשים, בני העדה ממשיכים לשיר ולזמר את תפילותיהם. כדי לא לבטל את הזמן עד לשקיעת החמה ותחילת הטקס, שרים מזמורים.
הכהן הגדול אלעזר בן-צדקה הוא היחיד העוטה "טלית" כפי שאנו מכירים. השומרונים מכנים בשם "טלית" את הגלימה הארוכה המעוטרת ב-22 כפתורים ולולאות. כולם מחכים להינתן האות לשחיטה ע"י הכהן הגדול שמנהל את הטקס.
הטקס מתחיל וכשהכהן הגדול קורא "והיה לכם למשמרת, עד ארבעה עשר יום לחדש הזה; ושחטו אתו, כל קהל עדת-ישראל- בין הערבים" שמות יב 6, זהו האות.
כל השוחטים נמצאים מצדי תעלת השחיטה, "מזבח האדמה". כשישים כבשים נשחטים בו זמנית.
פושטים את עור הכבשים ומנקים אותם מאיברים האסורים לאכילה. איברים אלו, "אימורין", מועברים מיידית למזבח הגדול לשריפה.
מסירים את עורו של הכבש ושורפים בתנורים. את הזרוע הימנית של הכבש מפרישים לכוהנים.
במלאכה זו עוסקים הצעירים. הכבשים נתלים על ווים ולאחר הניקוי מושחלים על מוטות עץ ארוכים - שיפודים, שנעטפים ברשתות מתכת על מנת שלא יתפרקו ע"י החום הרב בתנורים.
לאחר השחיטה, מסתובבים ומחבקים ומנשקים איש את רעהו.
ממליחים" וכל-קרבן מנחתך, במלח תמלח, ולא תשבית מלח ברית אלהיך, מעל מנחתך; על כל-קרבנך, תקריב מלח" ויקרא ב יג.
הנשים מחזיקות ענף של אזוב, אותו טובלים לאחר השחיטה בדם ובעזרתו מסמנים את המצח, כתחליף לסימון המשקופים: "והיה הדם לכם לאת, על הבתים אשר אתם שם, וראיתי את-הדם, ופסחתי עלכם; ולא-יהיה בכם נגף למשחית, בהכתי בארץ מצרים" שמות יב יג.
בזמן הכנת הכבשים, המבוגרים עסוקים בשירי פסח עתיקים בעברית עתיקה וריקודים. הנשים והילדים יושבים בחברותה ומשוחחים שיחת רעים.
ממתינים לשעה תשע שבה מורידים את הכבשים לתוך ששת תנורי האדמה. במהירות מכסים ברשת ברזל שעוזרת להחזיק את השיפודים במרכז התנור, על מנת שלא ישרפו מהדפנות הלוהטים. מכסים ביריעה, האש כבאת כתוצאה מחוסר חמצן, והכבשים מתבשלות בחום העז שנותר בתוך התנור.
לא נשארנו עד הלילה, אך מאוחר יותר הם מוציאים את הכבשים מן התנורים והולכים לאכול ארוחה מהירה בבתיהם. בסיום הארוחה הם חוזרים אל המתחם עם שאריות הכבש ואותם הם אוכלים בחברותא ואת השאריות שורפים במזבח. אין להשאיר כל זכר מהזבח עד צאת החמה.
בסוכות נבקר שוב אצל השומרונים.
Translation - English
We've all heard about the ‘Samaritan’ community, but don't really know who they are and what characterizes them.
While we heard that the Samaritans were celebrating the Passover sacrifice on April 28th,2010 (which was celebrated one month after the Jewish Passover eve), we were curious. We decided to travel, see, hear, and understand.
About an hour's drive from the Rosh Hayin area, we reached Mount Gerizim.
We met lovely people, hospitable people who were happy to answer all our questions, tell us about their origins, the differences between them and the Jews, and to share with us the Passover sacrifice held that evening.
The Samaritans are members of an ethno-religious community that maintain their uniqueness and authenticity for thousands of years, with one of the oldest heritages. Samaritans (in their language Shomrim – keepers, in Hebrew, of the Torah or the Torah of Moses) are an ancient people and an ethno-religious group based on a unique text of the Torah (Pentateuch). During history, the Samaritans went through riots and massacres, conducted mainly by the Byzantines and the ‘carriers of the cross’, and from a community consisting of tens of thousands of people, in 1919 only about 150 people survived.
They attribute themselves to be part of the Israelites from the time of the desert and belong to the Ephraim, Menashe, and Levi tribes. They did not exile with the other ten lost tribes of the Kingdom of Israel during the Assyrian exile that occurred in 722 BC.
According to the Samaritan tradition, they are pure Israelis, loyal to the religion of Moses, part of the Nation of Israel, and the carriers of its true legacy. The split between the Samaritans and the Israelites, according to the Samaritans, is based upon disagreements between the two groups concerning the chosen place for the building of the Temple. According to them, Moses established the sanctity of Mount Gerizim, and therefore Joshua Ben-Nun built the Tabernacle in a nearby place named ‘Gva’ot ‘Olam’ (World Hills, in Hebrew). "Here, Pinchas ben Eliezer ben Aharon, the High Priest, and his sons, served in the Temple. The Temple used to be located on Mount Gerizim and was recognized by all the tribes of Israel. They attribute the ‘altar of Isaac’ and the place of the Binding of Isaac to Mount Gerizim.
They relate themselves to be descendants of Aharon Ha-Cohen (Aharon, brother of Moses, regarded as the first Priest) dynasty, as appears in the Book of Chronicles. The only holy books recognized by them is the Torah of Moses, which was given to Moshe Ben Amram. They are faithful to the exact observance of the written laws in the Torah. The main difference between their text, when compared to the Torah in the hands of the Jews, is that in the Ten Commandments (according to the Samaritans), the wording appears: "And you shall build there an altar to your God, an altar of stones." The Samaritans do not recognize the oral Law Torah, nor the Mishnah and the Talmud. Also, there is no recognition of the books of Prophets and Scriptures, except for the Book of Joshua, which is very different from the version of the Jewish Bible.
The Samaritans observe the Sabbath properly, are committed to the land of Israel, they only celebrate biblical holidays (that are mentioned only in the first five books of the Bible), and their customs are different from those practiced by the Jewish people. The Samaritans are counting the years, and their calendar started when the Israelites entered the land of Canaan.
They keep the ancient Hebrew script and still use ancient Hebrew in their prayers.
The Samaritan community now has about 750 people, half of whom live in Holon (close to Tel Aviv) and the rest in the Loza neighborhood of Nablus, near Mount Gerizim, where their sacred sites are. All Samaritans have Israeli citizenship. The residents of Loza neighborhood, which is included in the municipal area of Nablus (located within the PA territories), also have Palestinian citizenship. They are mixed with their Arab neighbors, the children attend the Arab schools in Nablus, so their spoken language is Arabic. Also, they learn both the Hebrew language and the ancient Hebrew used during prayers in an orderly way. Economically, the Samaritans are involved in the West Bank economy, so it seems like they enjoy the best of both worlds.
Passover sacrifice
Passover sacrifice is the most important holiday for the Samaritans. All members of the community are obliged to be present at the sacrifice. The Samaritan residents of Holon (in the Tel Aviv area) leave their homes for the Passover days and move to their homes in the Loza neighborhood.
In the days before the sacrifice, preparations were made, buying sheep and washing them, and preparing the lumber to light the fire in the ovens.
We arrived around three o'clock and came to the archeological site at the summit of Mount Gerizim. We saw the place where the Samaritans believe that there stood The Tabernacle of Testimony, in a place called ‘Giv’ot ‘Olam’. We also saw the ‘altar of Isaac’ and the location of the Binding of Isaac, according to the Samaritans tradition.
We went down to the center of the neighborhood, to the ceremony complex that slowly began to fill. Guests concentrated on the guests' bar. Six huge ovens that have already been lit were at the site of the ceremony area, around which piles of firewood have been prepared. The complex was slowly filling up with people. Community members wore white clothing.
Around five o'clock, they brought the sheep. The congregation continued to sing and chant their prayers. In order not to waste time until sunset and the ceremony, chanting was sung. High Priest Elazar ben-Zdakah was the only one who wears a "Talit" as we know it. The Samaritans call "Tallit" the long robe with 22 buttons and loops. Everyone was waiting for the opening signal for the slaughter by the High Priest, who presides over the ceremony.
The ceremony began when the High Priest read: " Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight. " Exodus 12:6. This was the sign!
All butchers are on the side of the slaughter ditch, the "altar of the earth." About sixty sheep were slaughtered at the same time. They took off the sheep's skin and cleaned them from the forbidden organs. These organs were immediately transferred to the great altar for burning.
They removed the skin of the lamb and burned it in the ovens. The lamb's right arm is secreted to the priests. In this craft, the young were engaged. The sheep were hung on hooks and after cleaning are threaded onto long wooden rods - skewers, which were wrapped in metal nets so as not to break apart by the high heat in the ovens. After the slaughter, everyone turned and hugged and kissed one another.
" And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt." Leviticus 2:13.
The women were holding a branch of hyssop, which they dipped in the blood after the slaughter. They used the hyssop to mark their forehead, as a substitute for the doorpost marking: " Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. While preparing the sheep, the adults were busy with ancient Passover songs in ancient Hebrew and with dancing. The women and children sat for a conversation and chat.
They waited for nine o'clock when the sheep were lowered into the six earthen ovens. Quickly covered with an iron mesh that helped keep the skewers in the center of the oven, so that they do not burn from the hot walls. Covered by blankets, the fire goes out due to lack of oxygen, and the sheep simmer in the intense heat left in the oven.
We didn't stay until the end of the feast, but later they took the sheep out of the ovens and went for a quick meal in their homes. At the end of the meal, they returned to the compound with the leftover lamb, which they ate together, and the leftovers were burnt at the altar. No trace of the sacrifice should be left until dawn.
In Sukkot, we will revisit the Samaritans.

Until the Covid19 broke – my primary profession was as an English tour guide in the Land of Israel, parallel to translation services I offered.
In 2019, I published a one-of-a-kind Hebrew/English dictionary for terms relating to the Land of Israel – “Know the Holy Land”. It was the first attempt to create a professional glossary in Hebrew and English, covering geography, geology, archeology, architecture, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, site names, flora, fauna, and many other subjects. Since the Covid19 started and tourism collapsed, I was busy writing my second book in English, connecting the Evangelical Christians to the roots of their faith in the Land of Israel. In October 2021, I finished writing my book, which holds 125,000 words.
I am now ready for the next phase in expanding my translation career.
