Che carnevali in quegl’anni, a Billerio!
Erano il più bell’intermezzo dell’anno.
Li aspettavamo con ansia e già ai Santi
si cominciava a pensarci e ad organizzarci
per viverli al meglio.
… cercavamo i tomâts per andare i maschera,
mettevamo da parte cotechino e salsicce per le cene ...
Piccole cose d’accordo,
cose di paese o di borgo, ma che bello!

Mi piace iniziare questa pubblicazione da questo estratto di Meni Ucèl, il noto scrittore del secolo scorso Otmar Domenico Muzzolini di Billerio, massimo cantore ed anche protagonista del carnevale tarcentino, tratto da Carnavâi - da “Il Pignarûl” del 1974, pubblicazione annuale della Pro Tarcento.
Carnevale tarcentino: gruppo a bello e gruppo a brutto.
Con la chiusura dei riti epifanici del 6 gennaio inizia il carnevale per concludersi il martedì grasso che precede le Ceneri, per cui la durata del periodo carnevalesco è determinato ogni anno dalla data della Pasqua. Altrove, come nella vicina Cergneu (nel comune di Nimis), la liberazione del Pust, termine sloveno che indica il Carnevale, avviene la sera del 5 gennaio.
Ma vediamo se ci è possibile capire da quando si svolge il caratteristico carnevale tarcentino articolato nei gruppi a bello e a brutto.
La prof. Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri, in riferimento alle maschere trovate nel tarcentino, negli anni 1959/1967 scriveva che le più antiche sono degli ultimi decenni del secolo precedente ove indicava in Vico Toso (1878 – 1915) “Il più bravo dei mascherai di Coia …”. La tradizione però delle maschere è molto più antica. Anche Alceo Muzzolini1 testimoniava: “Dalla fine dell’800 erano presenti le mascherate in tutta la valle del Torre”. Ma anche Meni Ucèl scriveva in Carnavâi del 1974 tomâts di cento anni a nasconderci il viso.
Possiamo senz’altro affermare, grazie alle testimonianze raccolte, che il periodo di massimo splendore e diffusione è stato tra le due Guerre Mondiali.
Già dopo i Santi iniziava l’organizzazione del carnevale cercando i tomâts2 da indossare, costruendone quelli mancanti, garantendosi i migliori suonatori, individuando le sale per poter ballare, accantonando qualche soldo per i crostoli. Qualcuno iniziava il carnevale già la sera del 6 gennaio.
Da Sammardenchia a Coia, da Zucchia a Billerio, ma anche a Malemaseria e a Zomeais, i giovani dei paesi della nostra riviera, abitualmente i coscritti dell’annata organizzavano il carnevale a cui erano presenti anche gli emigranti, rientrati dai lavori stagionali. Il corteo mascherato era caratterizzato solitamente in due gruppi: quello a bello, chiamato anche a viso scoperto, e quello a brut a brutto. Il primo non indossava le maschere e si rendeva garante del comportamento del secondo, che rovesciava i ruoli: la miseria in allegria, gli umili in potenti, gli ignoranti in sapienti. Le mascherate si facevano quasi ogni sabato,3 ma non potevano mai mancare il giovedì grasso e il martedì grasso. Il corteo mascherato veniva aperto dai suonatori, seguiva poi il gruppo a bello e chiudeva quello a brutto.
Prima di entrare nelle case veniva chiesto il permesso al padrone di casa e solo se autorizzati il gruppo delle maschere poteva entrare.4 Quasi sempre nel gruppo c’era qualcuno che sapeva suonare la fisarmonica e il contrabbasso, la chitarra o il mandolino, a seconda dell’abilità dei suonatori improvvisavano anche strumenti di fortuna. Diversamente si ricorreva a suonatori di qualche paese vicino. Questi ultimi venivano ricompensati con un pasto oppure granoturco o castagne. Ove possibile i suonatori stessi si alternavano per poter ballare anch’essi. Di solito si ballava di sabato sino a tardi, perché abitualmente il giorno dopo quasi tutti erano liberi da impegni e quindi potevano riposare.
Era famosa l’orchestra pazza, chiamata anche banda arrabbiata, per banda non è da intendersi solo come insieme di musicanti ma anche come compagnia affiatata di giovani che facevano gruppo anche nel periodo non carnevalesco. Erano più di venti giovani del borgo di S. Giacomo di Billerio che avevano costruito gli strumenti da soli, erano strani e ridicoli, ma suonavano. Ecco alcuni componenti: Arrigo Toso, violino - Menzin, armonica - Antonio Muzzolini Vergòn, contrabbasso - Gioacchino Job, Jachen, clarinetto - Aldo Revelant, Bressan, chitarra.5
Il gruppo a bello si mascherava con la pitturazione leggera del volto fatta con colori di fortuna, spesso veniva usata la fuliggine, rossetti e la farina bianca. Alcuni indossavano una velatura oppure una piccola maschera che copriva solo gli occhi. Ma indossavano il vestito migliore: brillantina sul ciuffo, la vaniglia nel taschino della giacca, per profumare un po’, e via lasciarsi andare in valzer, polche, mazurche e tanghi”.6
Il gruppo a brutto invece indossava i tomâts, le caratteristiche maschere di legno, ed il mascheramento si completava con vecchie giacche, stiriane del nonno, cappotti della grande guerra, “zoccoli di legno con il fieno dentro per scaldare i piedi nudi. Tomâts, alle volte vecchi cent’anni, cercati nelle case del paese”7, oppure realizzati dai mascherati stessi che si ingegnavano a realizzare la propria maschera, da indossare per celare la propria identità durante gli eccessi carnevaleschi. E le maschere erano perlopiù realizzate in modo rudimentale, spesso pesanti, ma alcuni intagliatori particolarmente abili raggiunsero una qualità notevole nelle loro opere.
Il carnevale era l’occasione per i gruppi mascherati di girare per le case, soprattutto quelle dotate di grandi cucine caratterizzate spesso dal focolare, fare qualche ballo con le ragazze del paese, le quali, conoscendo il percorso dei gruppi, si facevano trovare in quelle case seppure sotto l’attento controllo delle donne di casa, madri, nonne e zie che non concedevano loro molta libertà.
I gruppi mascherati, inoltre, passavano, di borgo in borgo, e anche nelle osterie o qualche sala appositamente riservata per i balli. Potevano anche entrare nelle case ove si svolgeva qualche festino privato, forti di una antica tradizione di accoglienza che non veniva mai loro negata, sicuri che nessuno si sarebbe permesso di togliere loro la maschera. L’ultimo giorno di carnevale, ogni compagnia restava nel proprio borgo.8
I ballerini mascherati potevano fare solo tre balli e poi, alla richiesta della ragazza, dovevano togliersi il tomât oppure uscire.
Ricevevano crostoli o polenta o vino da consumarsi il loco, magari uscendo per non farsi riconoscere durante la consumazione e quindi rientrare per continuare a ballare. Abitualmente veniva improvvisato un “discorsetto” oppure una scenetta, satirica o giocosa nei confronti di amministratori politici o di altri personaggi noti della comunità locale, mettendo in scena denunce umoristiche, campanilismi, vicende amorose o altri aspetti della vita quotidiana. Ma anche un matrimonio andato in fumo, la leggerezza di qualche ragazza, il parto, sottintesi di natura sessuale, questioni familiari come divisioni di beni, liti per questioni di confini; ai mascherati era riconosciuta, spesso oltremodo, il diritto di impunità, ma ci son stati casi di inimicizie nate in seguito a tali rappresentazioni.
“Che strît dobbiamo fare?”10 In queste scenette, denominate le comiche, satire o strîts, la voce dei mascherati era volutamente alterata e stridula, quasi un trillo d’uccello. L’alterazione era spesso dovuta ad una linguetta di cuoio, posta all’interno del tomât, tenuta in bocca dal mascherato. Erano pensate prima di partire per la mascherata, e poi sviluppate sul momento. Alle volte “le scene di questi teatranti si svolgevano senza parole, per non farsi riconoscere e la loro bravura dipendeva dalle capacità mimiche dei singoli soggetti”.11 “Puntavano più sulla forza della gestualità che della parola, con un’enfasi espressiva che arrivava fino al grottesco e al triviale”.12
A Sammardenchia il capogruppo in queste scenette era Ferdinando Vidoni, “ci si trovava a casa sua dove si discuteva l’argomento dello strît e poi ad ognuno veniva assegnata la parte”. 13
Questo girare per le case, ponendo attenzione a non entrare in quelle ove c’erano ammalati o c’era stato un lutto recente, consentiva loro di raccogliere uova, salame, formaggio, farina, vino ed altro, che, aggiunto ai pochi generi precedentemente accantonati dal gruppo, permetteva una cena finale in qualche osteria, per poi ballare tutta la notte. Solitamente nel gruppo c’era quello della gerla che aveva il compito di raccogliere e custodire quanto veniva loro offerto. Era festa grande per giovani ed anziani, soprattutto maschi, abitualmente infatti le donne ed i bambini non potevano mascherarsi. Abbiamo testimonianze però che a Billerio14 anche le donne ed i bambini facessero parte del gruppo mascherato presente quasi in ogni borgo, solo gli uomini però indossavano i tomâts. Le donne erano presenti soprattutto alle serate dedicate esclusivamente al ballo che si svolgeva in qualche grande sala riservata allo scopo. Sia Bruno Cjargnèl Bruno Peressoni che Meni Ucèl Otmar Domenico Muzzolini, entrambi di Billerio, hanno lasciato testimonianza di questa diversificazione del carnevale di Billerio, legata al ballo in grandi sale, rispetto al versante tarcentino di Zucchia, Coia, Sammardenchia, Bulfons e Zomeais. Già a novembre infatti prenotavano sia la sala che i suonatori. Solo dopo la seconda guerra anche nella zona tarcentina le donne sono state autorizzate a far parte del gruppo mascherato.
La maschera garantisce l’anonimato di chi la indossa, che si sente di conseguenza del tutto libero nei gesti e nelle parole, secondo il temperamento o l’estro del momento di impersonare caratteri malandrini che si divertiranno a recitare i ruoli più beffardi e istrioneschi, oppure soltanto allegri o appena ironici. “Il mascherato era “altro” da se stesso e grave sfregio era tentare di smascherarlo”15.
Pian piano iniziarono a far parte del gruppo mascherato nuove figure. Era frequente la maschera che porta la cosse la gerla con dentro una vecchia16. In effetti era una persona sola, che usciva attraverso un buco praticato nella gerla e sul davanti si metteva il busto e la testa di un pupazzo. Questo pupazzo muoveva le braccia (che erano le vere braccia del mascherato). Così si faceva pure lo scherzo della nonna col nipote nella gerla, con dialogo comico tra i due.
Oppure il gruppo mascherato portava in giro due pupazzi di paglia su di un asino bardato e infiorato. Uno vestito da donna giovane… la quaresima e l’altro da vecchio decrepito: il carnevale; a quest’ultimo, ogni tanto, con una grossa siringa venivano fatte delle iniezioni per mantenerlo in vita (Coia) … il vecchio finiva poi appeso sopra l’ingresso del ballo (Coia).17 Qualche volta, due mascherati, uno dietro ed uno davanti, fingevano un asino o si mettevano due maschere facciali, una davanti ed una sulla nuca. Ottenendo strani effetti.18
“A partire dal 1953, su iniziativa del diciottenne Ferruccio Vidoni, della famiglia Zoi di borgo Socrèt di Sammardenchia, sui tradizionali gruppi a bello e a brutto venne ad innestarsi il gruppo delle grandi teste di cartapesta che girava in autocarretta a Sammardenchia, a Tarcento per poi raccogliere applausi e premi per l’originalità e la bravura fino a Gemona e San Daniele”.19 Se il nostro carnevale tradizionale ha resistito sino allora lo si deve molto probabilmente allo stato di isolamento vissuto dagli abitanti della nostra zona montuosa.
E’ di quel periodo l’inizio del declino dei gruppi mascherati tradizionali, cioè quelli legati all’uso dei tomâts.
Il tomât, origine del nome della maschera del carnevale tarcentino.
La prima volta che le maschere lignee tarcentine vengono denominate Tomaz è nel 1964 quando Gaetano Perusini, pubblica “Mascherate rituali in Friuli” in Alpes Orientales1 riporta: “Le maschere della valle del Torre sono dette Tomaz e sono ricavate da tronchi contorti o ceppaie; …”
I coniugi Prof. Andreina Nicoloso e Dott. Luigi Ciceri in “Il Carnevale in Friuli”2 nel 1967 scrivono che le maschere lignee carnevalesche hanno in Friuli diversi nomi, a seconda delle zone. Nella Valle del Torre diversi sono i nomi: tomât, mascare, moretine, burutine, brutine e bieline. “L’appellativo tomàt era diffuso nel Friuli centro-orientale ed Alceste Saccavino nel suo scritto “Spassi carnevaleschi in Friuli”, del 1923, scriveva: “A Reana, e forse in qualche altro paese, il capo della comitiva dei mascherati portava un testone più grosso e goffo degli altri camerati ed era chiamato tomàt … Con questo nomaccio si voleva forse indicare uno sposo ipotetico che andasse alla ricerca della ragazza, …”. Un’altra definizione di tomàt, indica il tipico contadino friulano (derivante forse da Tomâs – Tommaso), spesso presente nella commedia dell’arte.
Sempre nel 1967 Alfredo Croatto3 sul Pignarûl, la pubblicazione annuale della Pro Tarcento, scrive: “Nella più parte dei casi il naso – sempre di considerevoli dimensioni – viene attaccato con viti o chiodi e cambiato ogniqualvolta si desideri trasformare il tomât, naturalmente a questa operazione si aggiunge qualche ritocco ad altri particolari oltre che alla diversa ricoloritura.”
E’ nuovamente la prof. Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri nel discorso per l’inaugurazione della “Mostra delle maschere dell’Alto Torre” tenutasi a Tarcento per l’Epifania 1982 a scrivere: “Qui ci limiteremo a parlare del tomàt … E’ certo però che ormai il tomàt è per antonomasia la maschera lignea che ha il suo habitat conservativo nell’area tarcentina. … Dalla figura del tomât il nome ha finito per fissarsi, anzi con l’equivalere, con la maschera lignea, un tempo fittamente presente nei paesi annidati sulla riviera tarcentina, caratterizzando queste comunità come gente estrosa, fantasiosa, dotata di abilità nel trattare la materia, come nativamente fornita di vocazione a creare “forma”. … le maschere di Coia e Billerio sono ispirate a spirito satirico e beffardo, quelle di Sammardenchia e Malmaseria … si deformano in un grottesco più orrido, più surreale ed inquietante, … la maschera assume così forza di documento, di testimonianza storica, oltre ad essere un vanto dell’istinto creativo e delle capacità artigianali.”
Nel 1982 Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri cita il tomàt quale maschera tipica dell’Alto Torre nella pubblicazione Tradizioni popolari in Friuli4.
Ancora la prof. Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri in “Maschere e mascherate nell’alto Torre” 5 scrive: “Il tomàt tarcentino, dunque può essere vantato alla stregua delle tipiche maschere regionali, quale eponimo di un’area un tempo sicuramente più vasta di quella oggi nota.”
I tomâts, servono a celare ma anche a “significare”, riproducono la faccia umana in vari atteggiamenti allegri e smorfiosi con difetti anatomici ridicoli o ripugnanti. Ma anche volti ingenui, smaliziati e poco bonari, ridanciani e caricaturali.
Nel tarcentino, prima della denominazione tomât le maschere di legno venivano chiamate burutinis o brutinis per il fatto che venivano indossate dal gruppo a brutto. Anche la stessa grafia della parola ha vissuto alcune vicissitudini: dapprima la posizione dell’accento grave sulla lettera a, sostituito poi con l’accento circonflesso e poi il plurale in ts, attenendosi alla normativa della grafia, rispetto alla tradizionale z finale.
Assieme ad Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri svolse una notevole lavoro di ricerca anche il marito Luigi Ciceri che, negli anni Sessanta del secolo scorso, progettò per la Società Filologica Friulana la raccolta di corpus sistematici (racconti popolari, canti e villotte, ex voto, …). Iniziò la raccolta nel 1959 e la concluse nel 19676. Per gli usi carnevaleschi diffuse questionari appositi in tutto il Friuli e con sua massima sorpresa trovò nel tarcentino notevoli materiali. Fu entrando in una osteria di Bulfons che scoperse i tomâts e ne fece il primo acquisto. Tale lavoro lo portò a scoprire ed acquistare una settantina di maschere: 36 a Sammardenchia, 21 a Coja, 9 a Bulfons, 2 a Malmaseria, 5 a Billerio, 1 a Lusevera e 2 a Villanova. Ora tutte fanno parte del Museo Etnografico del Friuli con sede a Udine. Non era facile reperire le maschere perché venivano bruciate o gettate via per mantenere l’anonimato di colui che le aveva indossate, perché qualche emigrante le portava all’estero nei propri luoghi di lavoro, o gettate perché essendo già state viste e non costituivano più una sorpresa.
E vennero i terremoti del 1976 con forti danneggiamenti soprattutto nelle borgate e paesi della riviera tarcentina, si scoprirono così vecchi tomâts abbandonati nelle soffitte e nei granai. Questi ritrovamenti furono spesso dati in dono ai tanti volontari che intervennero in soccorso morale e materiale in quelle comunità. Vuoi per la deperibilità del materiale e per la scarsa importanza che al tempo veniva data alla loro conservazione hanno fatto sì che fossero disponibili pochi esemplari ed è per questo motivo che le poche vecchie maschere rimaste sono gelosamente conservate dagli autori o dai loro familiari.
Ricordiamo che i tomâts venivano usati anche in occasione di matrimoni, ove portavano una nota di allegria soprattutto nei balli, o in occasione “della sbarra” di legno che lo sposo proveniente da fuori paese doveva superare per poter prendere in moglie una ragazza del paese. I giovani locali pretendevano dallo sposo la dogana una quota, che avrebbero poi speso in compagnia, in cambio della ragazza che si portava via.
Una testimonianza raccolta lo scorso anno ci informa che durante la guerra i partigiani che operavano sui monti di Magnano usavano, per i loro spostamenti, le maschere di legno per non farsi riconoscere dai residenti.
Il Gruppo folcloristico “Chino Ermacora” di Tarcento usa i tomâts in un proprio ballo denominato “Le maschere”. Nel 1968 Olvino Del Medico realizzò per il gruppo le maschere per la messa in scena di questo ballo ricco di figurazioni simboliche. Questa danza trova ispirazione nell’antico folclore della Val Torre, Tarcento in particolare, con stretta attinenza alla millenaria tradizione dei pignarûi i grandi falò che ancor oggi si accendono la notte dell’Epifania nella conca tarcentina. La manifestazione vuole concludere il periodo dell’Avvento e del Natale e dare inizio al tempo gioioso del carnevale. Nel danza infatti una giovane ballerina vestita con la maschera del carnevale irrompe e scaccia la vecchia befana.
Costruzione di un tomât: modalità e legni
Gli autori delle maschere non erano scultori, spesso nemmeno artigiani del legno, anzi in maggioranza si trattava di umili muratori o contadini, quasi sempre i mascherati stessi.
Il carnevale tarcentino non avendo figure o personaggi caratteristici da rappresentare permetteva la massima fantasia al mascheraio, alcune particolari espressioni del volto erano dettate dalla naturale conformazione del legno: un nodo, un ramo tagliato o altro. Il legno non mancava stante la ricchezza dei boschi. La scelta del legno cadeva preferibilmente su: il salice, molto presente nei vigneti di allora, l’ontano, per il suo colore rossiccio, il noce, che non si spacca e non ha nervatura, il tiglio, albero decorativo facilmente reperibile nei nostri boschi, l’olmo, il pioppo, il gelso, o altro legno che presentasse particolari conformazioni (nodi, incavi, protuberanze) atte allo sfruttamento per aspetti bizzarri e deturpanti, propri di questo genere di maschere. “… Quelli che potrebbero essere considerati difetti del legno diventano le sue peculiarità, …”1
Qualche mascheraio sceglieva delle radici o ceppaie che già avessero delle sembianze umane in modo tale che con pochi ritocchi, la maschera fosse pronta. Era messa particolare cura nel modellare i lineamenti orribilmente deformati. I colori cupi e contrastanti, l’aggiunta di bitorzoli, denti di maiale o cinghiale, corna, crine di cavallo o peli di maiale per le barbe, baffi o sopracciglia, rendevano ancor più pauroso il loro aspetto.2 Crini e peli animali venivano legati con fettucce di cuoio e fissati con chiodini. Baffi e barba, alle volte, erano direttamente scolpiti nel legno.
Nella parte interna di certi tomâts, all’altezza della bocca – specie se questa era forata da parte a parte – era attaccata una linguetta di cuoio che veniva tenuta in bocca onde evitare che il tomât venisse sollevato da eventuali curiosi violando così la sacralità dell’anonimato. Erano raffigurate generalmente facce di uomini, raramente di vecchie, di animali o di diavoli, spesso erano dotate di capigliatura con paglia, pelli di agnello o crine e completate con fazzoletti o cappellacci.
Il naso, molto spesso applicato e rimovibile, poteva essere intercambiabile e ciò permetteva variazioni alla maschera nel corso dello stesso carnevale. Il naso veniva applicato, con chiodi o viti, vuoi perché di grandezza spropositata o deforme ma anche per la difficoltà, di allora, della lavorazione di nasi molto sporgenti da ricavarsi da unico pezzo di legno.
La bocca, anch’essa spesso deformata, poteva essere completata con denti scolpiti o aggiunti sia in legno che con veri denti di animali, o altri materiali. In alcuni casi la lingua fuoriusciva dalla bocca ed anch’essa poteva essere applicata in legno o altro materiale. Le guance erano spesso solcate da profonde rughe che ne abbruttivano ulteriormente l’aspetto.
La finitura era lasciata con i segni evidenti della sgorbia mentre alcune venivano rifinite con raspa, carta di vetro, paglietta o un pezzo di vetro. Anche la coloritura poteva esser fatta in maniera raffinata oppure usando i semplici colori da muratore o imbianchino, verderame, terre da stucco e polvere di mattone, oppure finite con crema da scarpe o grassi animali.
La finitura interna, che doveva garantire la vestibilità, poteva esser rifinita in maniera accurata oppure con grossolani segni di sgorbia che arrecavano molto spesso ferite al volto di chi le indossava. Alle volte l’interno veniva imbottito per evitare il contatto diretto del volto con il legno se lo stesso non era ben rifinito.
Per poter sostenere queste maschere, dato che spesso erano pesanti, venivano legate sopra la testa con grossi spaghi o fettucce telate. Uno spago partiva dal mento della maschera e veniva legato alla nuca per impedire che venisse sollevata da qualche burlone.
La lavorazione iniziava con un pezzo di legno con un diametro di circa 30 cm ed una altezza di almeno 25 cm posto orizzontalmente e bloccato sul banco di lavoro. Alle volte si avvalevano di schizzi o disegni ma generalmente il tomât era ed è già nella testa e nel cuore del mascheraio per cui erano pochi i segni che tracciava sul legno e che scomparivano man mano che iniziava ad usare scalpelli e sgorbie. “… manufatti così originariamente singolari, ciascun figlio di un momento e di uno scalpello unico e irripetibile.” così Walter Tomada definisce i âin un articolo di presentazione del volume “Tomâts: un secolo di maschere lignee nel Tarcentino”. Importanti erano le distanze dei fori per gli occhi che dovevano permettere di poter vedere, la posizione della bocca per favorire il parlare e la respirazione, e l’incavo del naso nella parte posteriore.
Da una testimonianza che ho raccolto anni addietro a Sammardenchia da Attilio Vidoni ho appreso che oltre agli attrezzi più comuni che c’erano in ogni casa come seghe e accette di varie misure si usava lo striscio, strumento che si adoperava per togliere la corteccia ai pali di legno o per realizzare tavolame da costruzione, e lo spin, sgorbia a forma di zappetta, adoperato soprattutto nella parte iniziale dello svuotamento posteriore, qualche attrezzo veniva costruito appositamente, come sgorbie e scalpelli, nelle fucine di Domenico Vidoni o Arturo Sommaro, entrambi di Sammardenchia. Si sgrezzava il tomât sul ceppo con la sega e l’accetta, poi si lavorava con sgorbie e scalpelli, il retro veniva rifinito alla meglio affinché potesse esser indossato. Venivano realizzati solo maschere al maschile ed ogni anno erano nuove in quanto ogni annata di coscritti non voleva usare maschere realizzate anni prima. Le maschere non erano sempre dipinte dal mascheraio stesso ma da altri con mano più capace.
Oggi i mascherai usano gli stessi tipi i legno ma si cimentano anche nella sperimentazione di nuove essenze vista la maggior facilità di reperimento. Tra queste il cirmolo, legno dolomitico che cresce in alta montagna il cui taglio è contingentato, che seppure ricco di tanti nodi permette una facile lavorazione degli stessi, viene scelto soprattutto per la sua leggerezza.
L’offerta commerciale di sgorbie e scalpelli oggi è molto vasta sia per tipologia della forma che per le dimensioni. Il mazzuolo di legno, sostituisce i martelli o mazzuoli di ferro di un tempo, abitualmente cilindrico con pesi diversi e lunghezza variabile del manico al fine di ottimizzare lo sforzo soprattutto nelle fasi iniziali dello sbozzo.
Anche per la decorazione oggi c’è sperimentazione, si va dalla finitura naturale quando il legno presenta caratteristiche venature e variazioni naturali di colore tra le diverse profondità del legno, come ad esempio il gelso. Oppure finiti con sole cere di diversi colori. Si usano poi colori acrilici o ad olio, con finiture con cere lucidate oppure cere anticanti e successivamente strofinate con paglietta fine per un effetto di chiaro scuri molto efficace. Oppure si usa una miscela di acqua, colla, cemento e sabbia fine per conferire una finitura molto ruvida. Alle vote il mascheraio, come avveniva anche un tempo, affida a mani abili ed esperte la coloritura delle proprie maschere.
Anche il posizionamento della maschera sul banco di lavoro si è modificata passando da quella orizzontale appoggiata al banco ad una posizione verticale od obliqua con la conseguente costruzione di appositi banchi di lavoro. Queste ultime posizioni permettono un maggior e continuo controllo della profondità delle forme su entrambi i lati della maschera.
La modificazione della posizione di lavoro è anche frutto dei contatti tra i diversi mascherai, provenienti da altre regioni italiane o anche dall’estero, presenti nei simposi, occasione per tutti di apprendimento di novità sia tecniche che di materiali e di attrezzi.
Soffermiamoci un momento sulle lavorazioni principali nella realizzazione del tomât: fissato il pezzo di legno sul banco di lavoro si inizia lo sbozzo con le sgorbie più grandi e si vanno a definire soprattutto la posizione degli occhi che devono permette a chi le indossa una buona visibilità, la distanza degli assi tra un occhio e l’altro deve essere di sette centimetri. Si definisce poi la forma del naso e soprattutto della bocca che se fatta a U le conferisce una espressione sorridente, di traverso o all’ingiù invece rappresenta un volto serio, dispiaciuto o arrabbiato. Questi elementi possono essere deformati fortemente al fine di permettere la caratterizzazione della maschera. Importante nella svuotamento posteriore la realizzazione della sede per il naso che permetta una indossabilità quanto più aderente possibile della maschera al viso di chi la indossa. Man mano che si scava posteriormente si prova la maschera al fine di verificare la buona vestibilità della stessa. Per realizzare un tomât sono necessari ben due giorni.
Mascherai di ieri e di oggi.
Scriveva Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri nel 19671 “Il più bravo dei mascherai di Coia, e più precisamente della borgata di Zucje (Zucchia) è stato Lodovico Toso – Vico dai Tôs (1878 – 1915)2, dalle cui mani uscirono maschere bellissime, con tratti del volto molto pronunciati in forma grottesca. Le maschere di Lodovico Toso servirono da modello ad altri mascherai viventi, tra i quali Augusto Del Medico – Gusto Pirinici, Ottavio Volpe – Tavio de Massime, Mario e Corrado Zaccomer, Guido e Olvino Del Medico e Cesare Toso. Altri mascherai in Coia furono Francesco Muzzolini, Antonio Vidoni – Toni de Sare, Domenico Del Medico – Meni de Surîs e Alceo Muzzolini – Alceo Vergòn. Olvino Del Medico si ispira a Lodovico Toso, le sue maschere sono con tutti i tratti facciali esagerati. Quasi tutti i mascherari erano anche gli animatori delle mascherate e gli inventori dello strît, cioè del motivo burlesco. Tra gli animatori vogliamo ricordare Pietro Muzzolini – Pieri Vergòn, padre di Alceo”. Più tardi a Coia hanno operato Remo Toso (1923 – 2003) con maschere dalle espressioni beffarde ed irriverenti e Renato Biasizzo, impresario edile, le cui maschere si caratterizzano per la ricca varietà di espressioni attinte da caricature e dai tradizionali tomâts.
In Zucchia hanno operato anche Arrigo Toso, nipote di Lodovico, orientato verso ricerche e gusti diversi dalla tradizione. Anche i figli di Lodovico Toso, Tullio e Ubaldo, costruivano le maschere, inoltre Tullio si dilettava a suonare nelle mascherate e Ubaldo era invece un abile pittore di chiese e quindi anche di maschere.
A Zomeais vanno ricordati Guido Boezio (1916 – 1987), operaio tessile, con le caratteristiche maschere rosa dal taglio ampio ed appiattito del volto e dalle espressioni bonarie. Riccardo Floreani (1914 – 1994), le cui maschere sono caratterizzate dall’essenzialità degli elementi che compongono il volto. Giovanni Nicoletti (1914 – 1989), con maschere fortemente espressive molte delle quali lasciate al naturale, senza alcuna colorazione.
A Sammardenchia invece ricordiamo Aldo Micco, il bottaio, (1934 – 2000) nelle cui maschere si nota una forte personalità, con volti fortemente deformi, colorati con tonalità stridenti. Attilio Vidoni Tilio di Zoi (1926 – 2014) con caratteristiche maschere non dipinte ma solamente patinate a cera. Ferruccio Vidoni Ferucio di Zoi (1935), autore di una limitata produzione di maschere in legno a vista, rifinite con cera. Fernando Vidoni Nando il Lunc (1912 – 1991) di cui si conservano poche maschere. Dobbiamo aggiungere Sergio Micco (1935 – 2018) di Sammardenchia che possiamo considerare l’ultimo mascheraio operante sino al terremoto e poi “padre” dei successivi mascherai del nostro territorio e prezioso testimone delle vecchie mascherate. In Tomâts, video del prof. Valter Colle, Sergio racconta: “La prima maschera l’ho realizzata a 15 anni, imparando da mio padre, Aldo. L’ho fatta per necessità, infatti dovevo usarla io per andare in maschera. Tutti i giovani si ingegnavano a realizzarle per uso personale. Quando andavo a tagliare legna nel bosco e mi capitava tra le mani qualche legno di quelli che a me sembravano adatti, lo mettevo da parte e poi d’inverno lasciavo che si asciugasse, perché non si spaccasse e lo scolpivo la sera o nei giorni di pioggia”. Valter Colle nell’introduzione di quel video scriveva: “Questo breve filmato vuole essere dedicato a chi con capacità e caparbia sa ancora far sopravvivere, nonostante tutto, antiche pratiche e tradizioni … come i mascherai del tarcentino che nonostante la totale trasformazione delle locali tradizioni carnevalesche hanno saputo continuare e tramandare l’arcaica pratica del creare dal legno tradizionali maschere facciali”.
Andreina Ciceri nel 1996, elencando una serie di mascherai presenti nel catalogo della mostra organizzata dal C.I.C.T. concludeva la nota n. 59 del saggio “Maschere e mascherate nell’Alto Torre” in “Tarcint e Valadis de Tôr” interrogandosi sul futuro dei mascherai del nostro territorio: “… E domani?”. Riteniamo che la presenza nel tarcentino di oltre venti mascherai attivi possa essere la giusta risposta.
Nell’immediato post terremoto del 1976 fu “lo sguardo da fuori”3 come lo definì il prof. Gian Paolo Gri, che riportò in evidenza il ritrovamento dei tomâts e diede loro valore. “Fu una riscoperta anche per i locali che, … trovarono la forza ed il desiderio di ritornare se stessi e di recuperare la propria cultura.”4. Alcuni locali furono invogliati a riprendere l’arte mascheraria, fedeli ai modelli tradizionali nonostante la temporanea interruzione del carnevale locale. Luigi Revelant è stato l’artefice di questa ripresa, coinvolgendo le scuole locali, curando i cataloghi e le mostre stesse, organizzando simposi, sollecitando la ripresa degli strîts e riavvicinando e coinvolgendo i pochi mascherai rimasti sul territorio.
Andiamo a conoscere questi mascherai: di Sergio Micco, venuto a mancare nel febbraio del 2018, abbiamo già accennato precedentemente ed ha rappresentato la continuità tra il passato ed il presente. Dino Vaccari, nato a Sammardenchia nel 1944, apprende dai cugini la tecnica della costruzione delle maschere e realizza da solo gli attrezzi per lavorarle. Il terremoto interrompe questa sua passione per riprenderla più tardi, nei primi anni novanta, realizzando i tomâts che partecipano a diversi carnevali e vengono esposti in una mostra nel 2002. Remo Del Medico, nato a Coia nel 1947, dopo anni di emigrazione torna al paese natale ove agli inizi degli anni novanta si dedica ai tomâts continuando così la tradizione del padre Olvino, attivo mascheraio sino agli anni ottanta. Anche Luigi Revelant, nato nel 1951, stimolato dai rapporti con i tre mascherai, si dedica all’intaglio delle maschere lignee ponendo attenzione particolare alla vestibilità e leggerezza delle stesse. Si dedica inoltre all’organizzazione di corsi per intagliatori di maschere e trova nell’amministrazione comunale un valido sostegno.
Dai corsi nasce una nuovo gruppo di mascherai che oggi conta più di una ventina. Aniceto Revelant, nato a Billerio nel 1931 e scomparso nel 2018, ha respirato lungamente l’aria di un paese “storico” per i tomâts, dopo aver perfezionato la tecnica si dedica con successo alle maschere. Sergio Ganzitti, nato a Zomeais nel 1953, è un sostenitore della cultura popolare locale ed ha appoggiato, da amministratore pubblico, la rinascita della tradizione carnevalesca del territorio. Si dedica anch’egli all’intaglio dei tomâts, preferisce finire le sue maschere con l’evidenza dei segni della sgorbia e per la pittura, spesso, si avvale delle abilità di pittori o altri mascherai. Walter Gualtiero Della Schiava (1945 – 2013), appassionato alla tradizione del carnevale locale si dedica all’intaglio utilizzando perlopiù il tiglio lasciando le sue maschere al colore naturale del legno o semplicemente finite con delle cere. Fabio Polla, di Billerio, si innamora delle maschere di legno e frequenta un corso per l’intaglio, da lì ha inizio la sua produzione di maschere. Marco Olivo, nato nel 1963 vive a Tarcento dove conosce le locali maschere di legno, incuriosito inizia a intagliarle per poi essere usate negli strîts di cui è promotore. Le sue maschere sono caratterizzate dalla confortevole indossabilità. Gianni Moro, nato a Tarcento nel 1947, inizia a scolpire maschere dopo aver partecipato ad uno dei primi corsi di intaglio. Enzo Baselli, nato nel 1949 vive a Segnacco, dopo una pluriennale esperienza di disegno con il pirografo si dedica all’intaglio delle maschere. Esse sono caratterizzate da essenziali colpi di sgorbia ed anche la pittura delle stesse è molto particolare. Italo Rovere, vive a Tarcento, artigiano del legno sino a pochi anni fa decide di liberarsi di vincoli di misure sempre obbligate ed affronta il legno con più libertà e fantasia per la produzione delle maschere. Ezio Cescutti, vive a Magnano in Riviera, dopo diverse esperienze nell’arte figurativa si cimenta con successo nell’intaglio delle maschere lignee. Con fantasia e capacità dà forme sempre diverse alle sue maschere finendole con nuove tecniche pittoriche che danno un tono di modernità ai classici tomâts. Andrea Agnoletti, nato nel 1977 vive a Talmassons, conosce i mascherai ad una manifestazione regionale e subito si interessa alla loro attività. Sin da subito acquisisce la manualità necessaria per realizzare i suoi fantasiosi tomâts. Enrico Pilotto, nasce a Tarcento nel 1967, avvicinatosi alle maschere in occasione di una manifestazione tarcentina in breve tempo diventa abile nell’intaglio e nella finitura. Igino Boschetti, nasce a Tarcento nel 1950, trova in un mercatino dell’antiquariato una maschera tarcentina che lo spinge a conoscere questa realtà e, dopo aver frequentato il corso, diventa a sua volta mascheraio. Giulio Antoniutti, nato nel 1976 vive a Tarcento. In visita ad un laboratorio per bambini organizzato dai mascherai resta ammaliato dalla realizzazione dei tomâts. Partecipa subito al corso e con applicazione ed entusiasmo si dedica all’intaglio. Franco Desomaro, nato nel 1956 vive a Udine. Appassionato del legno, quale materia prima per varie forme artistiche, si dedica con passione alle maschere. Fautore della partecipazione a Telethon de “i Mascarârs di Tarcint”5 ove ogni anno, nelle ventiquattro ore della gara podistica, viene realizzato un mascherone. Kabyr Frisano, nato nel 1985 vive a Udine. Per lavoro frequenta Tarcento ove, in una osteria, si imbatte nel caratteristico carnevale locale. Si appassiona a questa forma di satira ed alle sue caratteristiche maschere e ne diviene animatore ed intagliatore. Luca Trink, nato nel 1957 vive a Mels di Majano. La passione per il teatro lo porta a conoscere gli strîts, da lì a breve il passaggio alla conoscenza dei tomâts ed al suo impegno nella costruzione degli stessi. Una attenzione particolare va posta nei confronti di due mascheraie. Dileta Tomadini, vive a Billerio. Alla scoperta dei tomâts si entusiasma e si avvicina all’intaglio, la precedente esperienza pittorica la facilita nella finitura e colorazione delle sue maschere ed anche di altri intagliatori. Eleonora Zaccomer, tarcentina vive a Magnano in Riviera. Frequenta l’istituto d’arte e la sua inclinazione artistica l’avvicina alla realtà dei mascherai tarcentini ove da subito dimostra creatività e ottima mano nella finitura. In questi ultimi tempi si sono avvicinati al mondo dell’intaglio Marco Trink, che ha ereditato la passione dal padre mascheraio, Michele Siega, con interesse anche alla costruzione dei krampus di legno, Raffaele Revelant, nato a Billerio, è cresciuto circondato dal fascino dei tomâts e Diego Biasizzo che, dopo aver ricevuto in dono un vecchio tomât, si è avvicinato al mondo delle maschere lignee tarcentine. Altri sono, sul nostro territorio, i mascherai che saltuariamente si impegnano nella costruzione dei tomâts, in particolare in occasione del carnevale.
Così scrive il dott. Stefano Morandini nel suo saggio “Tomâts o burutinis” in occasione della mostra tenutasi a Tarcento a Palazzo Frangipane nel 2004 in cui erano esposte le maschere della Collezione Ciceri e la recente produzione dei mascherai tarcentini “… le creazioni dei mascarârs mascherai degli ultimi anni: una sorta di dialogo tra tradizione e innovazione. Dal punto di vista funzionale non passa differenza tra quelle in bacheca e quelle dei mascherai più giovani: sono tutte “maschere d’uso” e “non da attaccare alla parete” come dice Luigi Revelant”.
Il Carnevale tarcentino al giorno d’oggi.
“Alla fine, ovviamente, si è perduta ogni consapevolezza degli antichi riti agrari e ci si è mascherati per puri scopi ludici, conservando tuttavia un sentimento ancestrale dell’obbligo della continuità” così affermava la professoressa Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri già nel 1982.1
Del carnevale di un tempo sono rimasti solo gli strîts, interpretati originariamente dal gruppo a brutto, mentre la parte legata al ballo nelle famiglie e nelle osterie, interpretata dal gruppo a bello, è caduta del tutto in disuso.
“… dovete sapere, l’idea di riprendere questo tipo di Carnevale è venuta a un tipo che si chiama Luigi Revelant … che non aveva niente a che fare con Sammardenchia …”. Così si legge nelle prime pagine di “10 ains di … scùmul”, la pubblicazione edita dal gruppo mascherato il Scùmul nel 2007 in occasione del decimo anniversario di costituzione. Questo ci aiuta a datare e riconoscere la paternità della ripresa del carnevale tarcentino. Fu infatti Luigi Revelant a promuovere nel 1997, dopo una fugace e isolata esperienza avvenuta nel 1993 a cui avevano partecipato i gruppi di Sammardenchia, Coia e Ciseriis, la ripresa degli strîts. Da subito si costituì a Sammardenchia il gruppo dello Scumul, prendendo il nome del luogo dove si buttavano le cose che non si usavano più, quelle che non servivano, recuperando così qualcosa che non veniva più usato. L’anno successivo presentarono il primo loro strît: Il parto. “… Scùmul: un gruppo spontaneo di ragazzi, ultimi interpreti del Teatro d’osteria con tomâts. Poco prima di carnevale si incontrano per stendere un canovaccio …”2 così lo definisce Stefano Morandini. Nel 2005 è nato il gruppo “Virus pegri”, ovvero un virus che si insinua lentamente negli astanti, mentre nel 2013 vediamo l’esordio del gruppo “I rusclis”, i pungitopo, per indicare la natura pungente dei loro strîts. A questo gruppo negli ultimi anni si accompagna un gruppetto di musicanti riprendendo un po’ l’usanza dei vecchi gruppi mascherati. Si ricorda, nel 2003, anche una isolata interpretazione del gruppo “La gote” di Segnacco e di una occasionale messa in scena da parte della compagnia teatrale della associazione “La Clape di Crosis” di Ciseriis e Zomeais mentre gli altri tre gruppi sono tuttora attivi. Tutti gli strîts vengono messi in scena in lingua friulana e sono oggi fra le poche forme di teatro spontaneo che ancora si incontra nelle nostre zone.
Abitualmente l’organizzazione dello strît avviene con un primo incontro dei partecipanti nel quale si decide in linea di massima quale sarà il tema della rappresentazione, ripercorrendo a ritroso gli accadimenti significativi dell’annata sia locali che esterni alla comunità. Individuando quali saranno i personaggi chiave e chi li dovrà interpretare, stabilendo anche le osterie che verranno toccate dal percorso del gruppo. Poi c’è qualcuno che butta giù un primo canovaccio che poi viene integrato e modificato dal contributo dei partecipanti e via via che ci si incontra si arriva al testo finale che non è mai definitivo. Ciò è dovuto al fatto che non sempre possono esser presenti tutti, oppure si aggiunge qualche ultima battuta relativa agli ultimi fatti. Vengono studiati i movimenti e la presenza in scena dei personaggi da adattarsi di volta in volta a seconda degli spazi disponibili nelle osterie.
Ognuno trova i vestiti più adatti al personaggio che rappresenterà avvalendosi anche di accessori o strumenti di lavoro consoni al ruolo e poi i tomâts. Il gruppo di Sammardenchia si avvale della inesauribile scorta di tomâts del mascheraio Sergio Micco, individuando quelle più confacenti, oppure ottenevano da Sergio, ricco di pazienza, la realizzazione di maschere specifiche per nuovi personaggi, ricordiamo la testa di una mucca, Bin Laden, extracomunitari, … All’interno degli altri due gruppi invece, di cui fanno parte anche alcune donne, ci sono alcuni mascherai che le producono o mettono a disposizione. Si verifica spesso la gioiosa inversione dei ruoli dove le donne interpretano la parte dell’uomo mentre ormai è consolidata l’inversione opposta.
E sono pronti finalmente alla mascherata. Il capo della compagnia entra per primo nella osteria, presenta la compagnia e spiega il motivo di questo “fare teatro” chiedendo anche il silenzio e l’attenzione dei presenti. Seppure l’ospitalità sia stata concordata non sempre l’ingresso rumoroso delle maschere viene accolto con interesse. Superate le difficoltà della “prima”, di osteria in osteria, la satira diventa più fluida e spesso modificata personalizzandola anche al luogo in cui si svolge. Alle volte i presenti si inseriscono nei dialoghi e il gruppo, facendo attenzione a non perdere la trama, interagisce rendendo così partecipata la rappresentazione. L’improvvisazione alle volte aiuta ad uscire da momenti di impasse ma è necessario poi ritornare al canovaccio concordato per non perdere magari la parola o la frase chiave che introduce la battuta della figura successiva. C’è sempre però il capo, o il più smaliziato del gruppo, che risolve i momenti di difficoltà o con una battuta, un applauso strappato, un suggerimento o anticipando l’ingresso di un personaggio. Applausi veri e sinceri che arrivano spontaneamente dal pubblico presente e affezionato. Giunti alla fine il gruppo esce e poi rientra come nei finali a teatro, il gruppo di Sammardenchia si toglie la maschera rivelando l’identità, gli altri gruppi non lo fanno, se non per scelta individuale, e consumano quanto viene loro offerto dalla generosità dell’oste.
“Lo strît e il tomât sono la nostra storia, ma per non dimenticare la tradizione deve essere viva, schietta, riempita dal gusto di ridere e dalla felicità di sentire una risata, spinta dal coraggio di denunciare il padrone e anche dell’onestà di prendersi gioco del sottomesso” questo leggiamo sul testo in lingua friulana edito dallo Scùmul nel decennale di fondazione. I gruppi mascherati finiscono la serata con una cena in compagnia, non più con le vivande raccolte, ma in qualche tipica osteria o frasca.
Gian Paolo Gri, allora docente di Antropologia Culturale all’Università degli Studi di Udine, nel suo saggio in occasione del Convegno tarcentino “Il futuro dei carnevali alpini, tra ricerca e riproposta” del 2004 afferma: “… Mi piace che a Tarcento i gruppi di giovani che gestivano il carnevale si chiamassero una volta “Bande rabiose” (Banda arrabbiata) e oggi Scùmul (discarica). Il Carnevale rivive se ha questa capacità di muovere dai margini, di rimettere in circolo l’usato, il vecchio, il buttato. Qui vedo bene, nella riproposta, il ruolo centrale delle maschere a brut (brutto) con la loro capacità inquietante. … Mi impressiona questa contraddizione fra la rinnovata vitalità di molti carnevali alpini e l’estenuazione invece di altri rituali di natura carnevalesca legati ai riti di passaggio giovanili. E mi piace immaginare una riproposta del carnevale che sapesse diventare contagiosa e potesse contaminare altre situazioni, altri contesti, altri ambiti ai quali gioverebbe molto il gioco della dissacrazione, della deformazione, dell’irriverenza, dell’anticonformismo, del gusto per lo sberleffo, della capacità di ironia impiantata sull’autoironia. Dio sa se ce ne sarebbe bisogno: sono dimensioni che la società e i giovani non possono permettersi di perdere.”.
Mostre, convegni, simposi e laboratori.
Le maschere tarcentine furono oggetto di una prima mostra a Tarcento nel 1982 in occasione dei festeggiamenti epifanici: “Mostra delle maschere dell’Alto Torre”, fu promossa dal Comune e curata dalla prof. Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri che presentò le maschere di legno del nostro territorio, raccolte dal marito Luigi Ciceri e donate al Museo delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari di Udine ora denominato Museo Etnografico del Friuli.
Il depliant di presentazione della mostra “i tomaz” - Mostra delle maschere lignee carnevalesche del Tarcentino” tenutasi a Tarcento nel Palazzo Frangipane nell’estate del 1987 a cura del C.I.C.T. (Centro Iniziative Culturali Tarcento) terminava così: “per concludere noi vorremmo che questa rassegna costituisse uno stimolo, una proposta a ravvivare questa affascinante esperienza nella sua versione friulana. E non dimentichiamoci che il Friuli, come diceva Ippolito Nievo, è un piccolo compendio dell’universo”. L’appello non è caduto nel vuoto. Ricordiamo chi allora si era particolarmente impegnato nella realizzazione della mostra: Vittorio Battistuzzo, Dino Durigatto, Giselda Lucatello, Gianpietro Maroello, Luigi Revelant e Carlo Vidoni.
Già nel 1988 sempre il C.I.C.T. propose una nuova mostra “I tomàz – Maschere lignee del tarcentino (Friuli)” tenutasi a Milano nella galleria d’arte “Studio Bramante” con l’esposizione di oltre cinquanta maschere di Guido Boezio, Olvino Del Medico, Riccardo Floreani, Sergio Micco, Alceo Muzzolini, Giovanni Nicoletti, Arrigo Toso e Remo Toso.
Nel 1993, in occasione degli eventi epifanici, venne organizzato a Tarcento, da “Il Laboratorio” di Udine, il primo simposio di mascherai, denominato “I tomàz – Fascino antico, nuove emozioni” tenutosi in via Roma e piazza Roma con la partecipazione di scultori provenienti dall’arco alpino.
Nel 1994, sempre in occasione dell’epifania, l’appuntamento “I tomàz – Fascino antico, nuove emozioni” viene arricchito con la presentazione del Carnevale Ladino della Val di Fassa, “uno dei più interessanti e documentati delle Alpi Orientali”. Viene inoltre presentata, a cura de “Il Laboratorio” e in collaborazione con gli insegnanti e gli studenti della locale scuola media, la ricerca sul carnevale. Successivamente alcuni intagliatori locali hanno donato alla scuola alcune maschere realizzate su disegno degli alunni partecipanti. Il tutto grazie all’attenta organizzazione di Luigi Revelant e numerosi collaboratori tarcentini.
Nel 1995, 4 5 6 gennaio, terza edizione di “I tomàz – Fascino antico, nuove emozioni” con la partecipazione di mascherai ospiti e la presentazione dei “I Rölar” di Sauris con la partecipazione del prof. Gian Paolo Gri e la realizzazione di una mostra fotografica di maschere lignee presso il centro commerciale Alpe Adria.
Nel 1996 i tomâts vengono esposti a Cividale nell’ambito della festa di carnevale “Scaramatte”.
Dopo alcuni anni di silenzio, nel 2000 viene organizzata ai Colonos di Villacaccia di Lestizza una mostra ed una conferenza sui tomâts in occasione della manifestazione “In file”. Per i festeggiamenti patronali di San Pietro, ha luogo un simposio, sostenuto dall’amministrazione comunale, con i mascherai locali: Remo Del Medico, Sergio Micco e Luigi Revelant.
Nel gennaio del 2002 Remo Del Medico, Sergio Micco e Luigi Revelant e Dino Vaccari – con il nome “I mascarârs di Tarcint” (I mascherai di Tarcento) - presentano, presso il centro commerciale Alpe Adria, i loro tomâts con lo scopo di “sostenere con convinzione una tradizione specifica delle nostre terre e rispondere attivamente agli stereotipi del carnevale globalizzato e uniforme”.
Sempre nel 2002, il Comune di Tarcento, promuove il simposio di scultura di maschere lignee “Su la maschera” – così titolata da Luigi Revelant – negli “ampi e luminosi spazi del Centro Europeo Luciano Ceschia che non potevano fornire cornice migliore…”. Vi partecipano oltre ai mascherai locali anche gli ospiti Osvaldo Casanova e Pierfrancesco Solero di Sappada, Silvana Buttera di Rodda ed Ermanno Plozzer di Sauris. Viene inoltre presentato da Valter Colle il libro “Storiis e mascaris dal carnevâl di Tarcint” (Storia e maschere del carnevale di Tarcento), edito da Comune. Una pubblicazione con testi scritti da Meni Ucèl (Otmar Muzzolini) e Paolo Pellarini e che mette insieme le testimonianze dei nostri vecchi sulla tradizione dei tomâts e degli strîts raccolte da Gigi Revelant e Sergio Ganzitti, che le ha anche tradotte in lingua friulana.
Nel marzo 2003 il Comune organizza a Palazzo Frangipane la mostra “Une volte a Carnevâl” “Una volta a Carnevale” ove una ricca esposizione di immagini e testi illustra i carnevali del passato. Diversi materiali sono stati messi a disposizione della mostra da singoli privati. Fa bella mostra un documento del 1662 dedicato a Giovanni Battista Frangipane, patrono e mecenate, - Signore di Castello, Porpetto e Tarcento - scritto da Iacobo Medico (forse Jacopo del Medico). Si tratta di una locandina che annuncia uno spettacolo in undici scene in parte scritta in lingua friulana e con attori, tarcentini, magnanesi, tricesimani e segnaccesi. I temi trattati sono caratteristici del carnevale, ci piace quindi pensare che gli strîts abbiano origini così remote. Inoltre viene organizzato negli spazi del Centro Ceschia il secondo simposio “Su la maschera!” con la partecipazione di scultori internazionali, la presentazione del carnevale ungherese di Moahcs ed un corso di scultura di maschere lignee sotto la direzione di Feliciano Costa, scultore di Moena e di Carlo Vidoni, pittore tarcentino per la finitura delle maschere. Inoltre viene allestita la mostra fotografica “Tomâts” a cura del circolo fotografico tarcentino Helice. Viene inoltre presentato il video “Strîts e tomâts: il carnevale tarcentino”, prodotto dal regista Carlo Della Vedova per conto dell’Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Tarcento. Il video è stato prodotto nelle lingue italiana, friulana ed inglese per il sempre crescente interesse per il nostro carnevale. Nelle musiche che accompagnano il video è inserito il brano “Mateçs” del maestro tricesimano Marco Maiero dedicato ai tomâts.
Nel febbraio del 2004 i tomâts volano in Grecia a Salonicco unici ospiti della mostra “Maschere lignee carnevalesche delle Alpi orientali” organizzata dall’Istituto Italiano di Cultura presso la propria sede. Con un allestimento particolarmente originale l’addetto culturale Ezio Peraro presenta ad un numeroso pubblico il carnevale tarcentino indossando un tomât e completando la sua vestizione con abiti di un ipotetico contadino friulano.
Nel 2004 il Comune, assieme all’associazione “Mascherai alpini”, predispone un ricco programma per la valorizzazione del carnevale tarcentino organizzando la terza edizione di “Su la maschera!”, simposio che vede la partecipazione di ben 12 mascherai tra cui uno di Cerkno (Slovenia) sede di un famoso carnevale che viene presentato a Palazzo Frangipane dove ha sede anche la mostra temporanea “Tomâts e burutinis”. In questa mostra vengono esposti i tomâts della collezione “Ciceri” messi a disposizione dalla sezione etnografica del Museo di Udine e presentati dalla conservatrice Tiziana Ribezzi. Accanto alle maschere del museo vengono esposte anche le maschere di più recente produzione dei mascherai locali. Intervengono alla presentazione della mostra gli’antropologi Gian Paolo Gri e Stefano Morandini che evidenziano l’importanza del lavoro che Luigi Revelant e l’amministrazione comunale stanno facendo. Morandini definisce2 “Tarcento, patria dei tomâts …”. Viene inoltre organizzato il convegno “Il futuro dei carnevali alpini, tra ricerca e proposta” cui partecipano quali relatori Cesare Poppi, Franco Castelli, Roberto Dapit, Gianluigi Secco, Alexis Bètemps, Stefano Morandini e Gian Paolo Gri, moderati da Luigi Revelant.
Nel 2005 il ricco programma della quarta edizione di “Su la maschera!” prevede due sedi Tarcento e Tolmezzo. Nella nostra città viene organizzato il simposio con la partecipazione di dodici scultori tra cui due austriaci, uno ungherese e due sloveni. Viene altresì presentato il carnevale ospite di Imst (Austria) e la realizzazione in piazza del “tronco delle maschere”, formato dalla sovrapposizione concentrica di una maschera realizzata da ogni singolo partecipante. Si tiene pure un corso di scultura di maschere sotto la direzione artistica di Engelbert Demetz. A Tolmezzo, in collaborazione con il Museo Carnico di storia popolare, viene proposto un confronto tra le maschere storiche e quelle attuali per leggere la continuità di questa tradizione; inoltre viene realizzato un simposio con sei scultori.
Nel 2006 l’edizione di “Su la maschera!” ha un programma più ridotto e comprende la mostra delle maschere realizzate dai ragazzi delle quinte elementari e la presentazione degli Atti del convegno del 2004.
Nel 2008, in occasione del Festival dei Cuori, la rassegna folcloristica mondiale che si tiene a Tarcento, alcuni mascherai locali regalano, al folto pubblico, emozioni antiche con la realizzazione in piazza delle caratteristiche maschere lignee.
Nel 2009 in occasione dell’Epifania c’è la prima partecipazione degli intagliatori tarcentini a “Su la maschera! Domani è carnevale” organizzata da “i Mascarârs di Tarcint” la neonata associazione che riunisce i mascherai tarcentini. La presenza degli stessi viene arricchita da una vetrina, a tema carnevalesco, nel centro cittadino. Nel mese di maggio alcuni intagliatori partecipano a Passariano a “Sapori Pro loco” esportando così la conoscenza dei tomâts al di fuori dell’ambito comunale. Si ripete anche la presenza al Festival dei Cuori. In questo anno inizia la partecipazione, dei mascherai a due significative manifestazioni carniche: “Mistîrs” a Paularo e “Magia del legno” a Sutrio, da allora sono sempre graditi ospiti delle stesse. L’anno si chiude con l’organizzazione del corso di intaglio di maschere tenutosi a Billerio, organizzato dai “Mascherai alpini” in collaborazione con il Comune di Magnano in Riviera, corsi che verranno ripetuti anche negli anni successivi.
Inizia il 2010 con la seconda edizione di “Su la maschera! Domani è carnevale” inserita nelle manifestazioni epifaniche tarcentine. Anche la RAI nazionale con la trasmissione “Geo & geo” si interessa del carnevale tarcentino regalandogli, con la regista Isabella De Felici, il palcoscenico nazionale, premiando così il lavoro dei tanti che si sono adoperati per la valorizzazione del caratteristico carnevale.
Nel 2011 l’associazione “i Mascarârs di Tarcint” organizza a Billerio un incontro intitolato “Tomâts: maschere di ieri e di oggi nella conca tarcentina” dove i relatori Stefano Morandini, dell’Università di Udine, e Luigi Revelant, presidente dei “Mascherai alpini”, illustrano, ad un pubblico sempre più interessato, le peculiarità dei carnevali friulani ed in particolare il nostro carnevale. “Nei nostri musei etnografici le maschere “escono” come per tradizione solo a carnevale spesso per essere esposte in mostre temporanee e poi tornare nella loro routine museale di “tempo cristallizzato” ed asettico” questo un breve stralcio dell’intervento di Morandini che ricorda anche “dopo la mostra dei Tomâts del 1983 allestita da Luigi Ciceri, il tarcentino è diventato laboratorio di studio e riflessione attorno alle maschere lignee.”
Nel 2012 “i Mascarârs di Tarcint”, all'interno del tradizionale appuntamento di inizio anno "Su la maschera! Domani è Carnevale", interpretano la figura del Vecchio Venerando, a cui dedicano la prima rassegna di maschere a tema, manifestazione che ancor oggi si ripete. Viene di nuovo presentata “Su la maschera!”, giunta, seppure in località diverse, alla undicesima edizione. L’associazione “Mascherai alpini” in collaborazione con il Comune, presenta un programma denso di appuntamenti. Ben venticinque scultori, provenienti dall’arco alpino ma anche da Sardegna, Austria e Slovenia, partecipano al simposio. Viene proposto “le mani sulla maschera”, un laboratorio per i bambini che hanno la possibilità di realizzare con le proprie mani dei semplici ma affascinanti visi di legno da portare a casa. Il locale gruppo folcloristico “Chino Ermacora”, in una performance notturna presenta il suo repertorio di danze popolari tra cui “Maschere” un ballo in cui i ballerini indossano i tomâts. Per la prima volta le maschere tarcentine, realizzate da Luigi Revelant, sono usate in uno spettacolo teatrale, prodotto da “Farie Teatrâl Furlane”, messo in scena in prima assoluta al Mittelfest di Cividale da Gigi Dall’Aglio, intitolato Siums (Sogni).
Il 2013 si apre con l’esposizione a Bovec, paese sloveno gemellato con la città di Tarcento, di ben quaranta tomâts. Allestita dall’associazione “i Mascarârs di Tarcint” in collaborazione con la locale amministrazione comunale, ha saputo cogliere l’interesse di tante persone sia tra i bambini che gli adulti, alcuni dei quali hanno voluto conoscere più da vicino le tecniche di costruzione e finitura delle maschere stesse. I bambini, accompagnati dalle loro insegnanti, seppur alle volte timorosi di fronte alle maschere spesso rappresentate con paurosi ghigni, si sono avvicinati per scoprire il fascino delle maschere di legno e trasferire su carta con tanti colori il loro modo di vedere queste maschere. A dicembre le maschere tarcentine sono ospiti a Malborghetto di una esposizione di maschere assieme ai locali krampus.
Nel 2014 “i Mascarârs di Tarcint” aderiscono al progetto “Musei, mostre e momenti”, promosso dal consorzio Dolce Nord Est, ed aprono la loro sede ai bambini per la creazione di piccole maschere realizzate con la plastilina intitolando l’incontro “E tu? Che tomât sei?”. Manifestazione che incontra l’entusiasmo dei piccoli partecipanti e la scoperta delle maschere e del carnevale tarcentino durante la visita guidata alla Cjase dai tomâts (Casa dei tomâts). Questo appuntamento viene inserito per alcuni anni nel programma dell’associazione.
Il 2015 vede l’organizzazione da parte del Comune della manifestazione “Festa dei popoli. Incontro di saperi” e, in collaborazione con “i Mascarârs di Tarcint”, viene realizzato a Villa Moretti “I tomâts incontrano i krampus” dove hanno modo di incontrarsi i mascherai tarcentini e quelli austriaci con i loro krampus in un arricchimento reciproco di tecniche costruttive delle maschere di legno rispettivamente usate per il carnevale e per la festa di San Nicolò. Ecco una breve nota sull’uso dei krampus. Si racconta che tanto tempo fa, nei periodi di carestia, i giovani dei piccoli paesi di montagna si travestivano usando pellicce formate da piume e pelli e corna di animali. Essendo così irriconoscibili, andavano in giro a terrorizzare gli abitanti dei villaggi vicini, derubandoli delle provviste necessarie per la stagione invernale. Dopo un po’ di tempo, i giovani si accorsero, però, che tra di loro vi era un impostore: era il diavolo in persona, che approfittando del suo reale volto diabolico si era inserito nel gruppo rimanendo riconoscibile solo grazie alle zampe a forma di zoccolo di capra. Venne dunque chiamato il vescovo Nicolò, per esorcizzare l’inquietante presenza. Sconfitto il diavolo, tutti gli anni i giovani, travestiti da demoni, sfilavano lungo le strade dei paesi, non più a depredare ma a portare doni o a “picchiare i bambini cattivi”, accompagnati dalla figura del vescovo che aveva sconfitto il male.
Nello stesso anno prima partecipazione a Telethon, la staffetta udinese organizzata per la raccolta fondi per la ricerca, dove “i Mascarârs di Tarcint” sono presenti con una staffetta di scultura di 24 ore continuate per la realizzazione di un mascherone gigante raffigurante un tomât che viene consegnato ad uno sponsor ed l’offerta ricavata versata a Telethon. Questa esperienza si ripete negli anni successivi.
Nel 2016 “i Mascarars di Tarcint”, in collaborazione con l'associazione "Lis Mascaris" di Morsano di Strada ed il coordinamento dell'Associazione “Storie dai Longobards”, con il patrocinio del Presidente del consiglio della Regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia, partecipa, a Trieste, alla mostra "Maschere, tra tradizione e innovazione". “Approda negli spazi del Consiglio regionale a Trieste, cuore della vita istituzionale della nostra Regione, una bella mostra di Tomâts, le maschere lignee del Tarcentino. Segno della sensibilità dell’Istituzione e della tenacia di tutti coloro che si sono adoperati negli ultimi decenni per salvare, rivitalizzare, rimettere in scena, una tradizione prossima a diventare solo traccia e testimonianza silenziosa in qualche raccolta di museo, o in qualche rievocazione nostalgica in pubblicazioni locali.”3 Un confronto tra le tradizionali maschere di Tarcento e le moderne e variopinte maschere di Morsano.
Nel 2017 “i Mascarârs di Tarcint” sono ospiti del Museo Etnografico di Udine, ove sono esposte le numerose maschere di legno raccolte sul nostro territorio dai coniugi Ciceri. Presentano ai partecipanti al laboratorio, ivi organizzato, il carnevale tarcentino con dimostrazione di intaglio di una maschera.
Nel febbraio del 2018 viene realizzata a Tarcento nella sala polifunzionale “Al Margherita” la mostra “Tomâts. Le maschere lignee del carnevale tarcentino”. Mostra collettiva, ben 27 i mascherai che hanno esposto, è stata organizzata da “i Mascarârs di Tarcint”, con il patrocinio del Comune di Tarcento e curata da Sergio Ganzitti. Esposizione presentata dopo 36 anni della prima mostra organizzata dalla professoressa Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri in cui hanno trovato spazio ben 187 maschere prodotte dalla fine degli anni 80 ai giorni nostri.
Nel gennaio del 2019 “i Mascarârs di Tarcint”, in occasione dei festeggiamenti epifanici tarcentini, presenta, nella Sala Margherita, un ricco programma di eventi denominato “Su la maschera! Domani è carnevale. Alla riscoperta dei vecchi tomâts tarcentini”. Il 4 gennaio, in occasione della consegna del Premio Epifania, ha luogo la presentazione di una selezion

I’d like to start this publication with this extract by Meni Ucèl, Otmar Domenico Muzzolini - well-known writer of the last century from Billerio, the greatest bard and a protagonist of the Tarcento Carnival as well - taken from Carnavâi (Il Pignarûl of 1974, the annual publication of Tarcento’s Pro Loco).
Tarcento’s Carnival: the beautiful and the ugly.
Carnival begins with the closure of Epiphany on January 6 and lasts until Mardi Gras – right before the Ashes -, so the duration of the carnival period is determined every year by Easter day. Elsewhere, as in nearby Cergneu (in the municipality of Nimis), the liberation of Pust, a Slovenian term indicating Carnival, takes place on the evening of January 5.
But I’d like to try and understand since when the characteristic Tarcento Carnival has been celebrated, divided into two groups, the beautiful and the ugly.
Prof. Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri, in reference to the masks found in the Tarcento area, wrote in 1959/1967 that the oldest are from the last decades of the 19th century, where she indicated in Vico Toso (1878 - 1915) "The best mask maker in Coia...". However, the tradition of wooden masks is much older. Even Alceo Muzzolini testified: "Masquerades were present throughout the valley of the Torre since the end of the 19th century". But Meni Ucèl wrote in 1974’s Carnavâi of hundred-years-old tomâts to hide one’s face.
The testimonies collected confirm that the period of maximum splendour and diffusion was between the two World Wars.
The organisation of the carnival began already after All Saints’ Day, when people started looking for tomâts2 to wear, carving the missing ones, gathering the best musicians, spotting the best ballrooms, setting aside some money for the crostoli – angel wings, a traditional sweet crisp pastry. Sometimes Carnival began already on the evening of January 6.
From Sammardenchia to Coia, from Zucchia to Billerio, but also in Malemaseria and Zomeais, the young people of the villages of the Riviera - usually the conscripts of the year - organised the carnival which was also attended by emigrants who had returned from seasonal work. The masked procession was usually characterised by two groups: the beautiful one, also called bare-faced, and the brut, the ugly one. The former did not wear masks and made itself the guarantor of the latter's behaviour, which reversed the roles: misery into joy, the humble became the powerful, the ignorant became the wise. Masquerades were done almost every Saturday,3 but they could never miss Fat Thursday and Fat Tuesday. The masked procession was opened by the musicians, followed by the beautiful group and closed by the ugly one.
Before entering the village’s houses, the landlord was asked for permission and only if authorised could the group of masks enter.4 The group often featured someone who could play the accordion and the double bass, the guitar or the mandolin, and - depending on the skill of the players - some also improvised with makeshift instruments. Otherwise they resorted to players from some neighbouring village. The latter were rewarded with a meal or corn or chestnuts. Whenever possible, the players themselves took turns to dance too. The dances were usually held on Saturdays late into the night, because on Sundays almost everyone was free from commitments and could therefore rest.
The ‘crazy orchestra’ or ‘mad band’ was very popular as well - band meaning not only a group of musicians but also a close-knit company of youngsters who gathered even in the non-carnival period. More than twenty young people from the village of S. Giacomo di Billerio had built the instruments themselves: they were strange and ridiculous, but they could be played. Here are some components: Arrigo Toso, violin - Menzin, harmonica - Antonio Muzzolini Vergòn, double bass - Gioacchino Job Jachen, clarinet - Aldo Revelant, Bressan, guitar.5
The beautiful group disguised themselves with light face painting done in makeshift colours: soot, lipsticks and white flour were often used. Some wore a veil or a small mask that only covered the eyes. But they wore their best clothes: glitter on the tuft, vanilla in the breast pocket of the jacket as perfume, and the dancing would start: waltz, polkas, mazurkas and tangos.6
The ugly group wore tomâts instead - the characteristic wooden masks - and the masking was completed with old jackets, grandfather's Styrian, coats of the Great War, and "wooden clogs with hay inside to warm their bare feet". The tomâts - sometimes a hundred years old - were found in the houses of the village7, or made by the wearers themselves, who made creative efforts to carve their own mask, to be worn to conceal their identity during the Carnival excesses. And the masks were mostly made in a rudimentary way, often heavy, but some particularly skilled carvers reached a remarkable quality in their works.
Carnival was an opportunity for masked groups to wander around the houses, especially those with large kitchens often endowed with a hearth, to do some dancing with the girls of the village, who - knowing the path of the groups - were found in those houses, although under the careful control of housewives, mothers, grandmothers and aunts who did not give them much freedom.
The masked groups also wandered from village to village, and in the taverns or some ballroom as well. They could also enter the houses where some private parties were held, thanks to an ancient tradition of hospitality which they were never denied, confident that no one would dare to try to take off their masks. On the last day of Carnival, each company remained in its own village.8
The masked dancers could only do three dances and - upon the girl’s request - they had to take off their tomât or leave.
They received crostoli (angel wings) or polenta or wine to be consumed on the spot, often going outside so as not to be recognised during consumption and then returning inside to continue dancing. Speeches or satirical or playful skits were often improvised, directed towards political administrators or other well-known personalities of the local community, during which humorous complaints, parochialism, love affairs or other aspects of daily life were staged and made fun of. But also, a marriage gone up in smoke, the lightness of some girls, childbirth, implications of a sexual nature, family matters such as divisions of property, disputes over border issues; the masked were often recognised the right to impunity, but there were cases of enmities that arose because of these representations.
"What strît shall we do?"10 In these skits - called satires or strîts - the masked person's voice was deliberately altered and shrill, almost a bird's trill. The alteration was often due to a leather tongue placed inside the tomât, held in the mouth by the masked person. The strîts were arranged before leaving for the masquerade, and then improvised on the spot. Sometimes "the scenes were performed without words, so as not to be recognised by one’s voice, and their success depended on the mimic skills of the actors".11 "They focused more on the strength of gestures than words, with an expressive emphasis that reached the grotesque and the trivial".12
In Sammardenchia the group leader in these scenes was Ferdinando Vidoni, "we were at his place, where the topic of the strît was decided and then everyone was assigned a role". 13
This wandering around the houses - carefully avoiding those where sick people rested or where there had been recent mourning - allowed the group to collect eggs, charcuterie, cheese, flour, wine and more, which - added to the few genera previously set aside by the party - allowed them to have a final dinner in some tavern before dancing the night away. The group always featured a person carrying a pannier, who had the task of collecting and keeping what was offered to them. It was a big party for young and old, especially males, in fact, women and children could not usually disguise themselves. Some evidence, however, shows that in Billerio women and children were part of the masked group too and they were present in almost every village, but only men could wear the tomâts. The women were present above all at the evenings dedicated exclusively to the dance that took place in some large room reserved for the purpose. Bruno Cjargnèl (Bruno Peressoni) and Meni Ucèl (Otmar Domenico Muzzolini), both from Billerio, left evidence of this diversification in Billerio's Carnival, characterised by the dancing in large rooms, as opposed to the Tarcento versions of Zucchia, Coia, Sammardenchia, Bulfons and Zomeais. As early as November, in fact, they booked both the venue and the players. In the Tarcento area, women were allowed to be part of the masked group only after World War Two.
The mask guarantees anonymity to the wearer, who consequently feels completely free in gestures and words, according to temperament or the inspiration of the moment to impersonate mischievous characters, playing the most mocking and histrionic roles, or just happy or slightly ironic ones. "The masked was ‘other' than himself and trying to unmask him was a serious offence"15.
New characters gradually began to be part of the masked group. A masked person carrying la cosse - a pannier with an old woman inside - was also very common 16. In fact, it was a single person, who came out through a hole in the pannier and placed the torso and head of a puppet on the front. The puppet moved its arms (which were the real arms of the person), which translated into the grandmother's joke, as if the old woman was carrying her grandson in the pannier, with a comic dialogue between the two.
Or sometimes the masked group carried around two straw puppets on a harnessed and flowered donkey. One dressed as a young woman – symbolising Lent - and the other as a decrepit old man - Carnival; every now and then, with a large syringe, injections were made to keep him alive (Coia’s version). The old man's puppet was finally hung over the ballroom’s entrance (Coia).17 Sometimes two masked people, one behind the other, pretended to be a donkey or put on two face masks, one in the front and one on the back of the head, obtaining strange and surreal effects.18
"Starting from 1953, on the initiative of eighteen-year-old Ferruccio Vidoni, of the Zoi family from the Socrèt hamlet in Sammardenchia, in addition to the two traditional groups, there was a new one of large papier-mâché heads which travelled on a lorry through Sammardenchia and Tarcento and later collected applause and prizes for its originality and skill as far as Gemona and San Daniele".19 If such Carnival traditions had survived until then it is most likely due to the state of isolation experienced by the inhabitants of the mountainous area.
The period marks the beginning of the decline of traditional masked groups – those who performed wearing tomâts.
The tomât: origin of the name of the mask of the Tarcento Carnival.
The first time Tarcento’s wooden masks are called Tomaz is in 1964, when Gaetano Perusini published Masquerade rituals in Friuli in Alpes Orientales 1, stating: "The masks of the Torre valley are called Tomaz and are obtained from twisted trunks or stumps."
Spouses Prof. Andreina Nicoloso and Dr. Luigi Ciceri wrote in The Carnival in Friuli2 (1967) that the carnival wooden masks have different names in Friuli, depending on the area. In the Torre valley, masks have had several names: tomât, mascare, moretine, burutine, brutine and bieline. The appellative tomàt was widespread in central-eastern Friuli and Alceste Saccavino wrote, in his Carnival traditions in Friuli of 1923: "In Reana, and perhaps in some other towns, the head of the masked party wore a bigger and clumsier mask than the other comrades, and it was called tomàt. Such nickname was perhaps meant to indicate a hypothetical groom who would go in search of a wife". Another definition of tomàt possibly refers to the typical Friulian farmer (perhaps deriving from Tomâs - Tommaso), often present in the comedy of art.
In 1967, moreover, Alfredo Croatto 3 wrote in Pignarûl - the annual publication of Tarcento’s Pro Loco - that: "In most cases the nose - always of considerable size – is attached with screws or nails and changed whenever wanted to transform the tomât; of course, a few tweaks or other details are added, as well as a different recolouring."
In the speech for the inauguration of the Exhibition of the masks of the Alto Torre - held in Tarcento, Epiphany 1982 - it was once again Prof. Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri who wrote: "Here we will just talk about the tomàt... It is certain, however, that by now the tomàt is by definition the wooden mask which has its conservative habitat in the Tarcento area." Indeed, the word tomât has now become a fixed expression and it conjures the idea of the wooden mask - once densely present in the villages nestled on the Tarcento Riviera, characterising these communities as whimsical, imaginative people, gifted with the ability to deal with the material, as natively endowed with a vocation to create “form”. The masks of Coia and Billerio are inspired by a satirical and mocking spirit, those of Sammardenchia and Malmaseria are deformed into a more hideous, surreal and disturbing, grotesque manner. The mask thus assumes the role of document, of historical testimony, as well as being a symbol of creative instinct and craftsmanship."
In 1982, Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri mentions the tomàt as a typical mask of the Alto Torre in the publication Popular traditions in Friuli 4.
Moreover, in Masks and Masquerades in the Alto Torre 5, Prof. Ciceri writes: "Tarcento’s tomàt can therefore be boasted in the same way as typical regional masks are, as an eponym of an area that was once certainly larger than the one known today."
The tomâts are used to conceal but also to "signify", they reproduce the human face in both cheerful and smirky attitudes with ridiculous or repulsive anatomical defects; naive, shrewd and not good-natured, laughing and caricatured.
Before they acquired the tomât denomination, wooden masks in Tarcento were called burutinis or brutinis because they were worn by the ugly group (brutin meaning ugly in the Friulian language). Even the very spelling of the word has experienced some vicissitudes: first the position of the grave accent on the letter -a, then replaced with the circumflex accent and then the plural in -ts, following the handwriting rules, compared to the traditional final –z (Tomaz > Tomàz > Tomâts).
Together with Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri, her husband Luigi Ciceri also carried out considerable research work. In the 60s of the last century, he created a systematic corpus for the Friulian Philological Society (folk tales, folk songs, votive offerings such as ex-votos, ...). The collection process began in 1959 and ended in 1967.6 Specific questionnaires about Carnival traditions were spread throughout Friuli and to his utmost surprise, he discovered remarkable information in the Tarcento area. It was upon entering a Bulfons tavern that he discovered the tomâts and made his first purchase, which led him to discover and purchase about seventy masks: 36 in Sammardenchia, 21 in Coja, 9 in Bulfons, 2 in Malmaseria, 5 in Billerio, 1 in Lusevera and 2 in Villanova. Now all of them are part of the Ethnographic Museum of Friuli based in Udine. Finding the masks was not easy because they were either burned or thrown away to maintain the anonymity of the one who had worn them, or because some emigrants took them abroad to their workplaces, or they were simply thrown away because they had already been seen and no longer constituted a surprise.
Afterwards, the earthquakes of 1976 came with severe damage, especially in the villages and towns of the Tarcento Riviera, so old tomâts were discovered abandoned in attics and barns. These findings were often given as a gift to the many volunteers who intervened in the moral and material relief in those communities. Due to the perishable nature of the material and the scarce importance given to their conservation at the time, few copies were traceable and therefore the few old masks that are left are jealously preserved by the authors or their families.
Note that the tomâts were also used for weddings, where they brought a note of joy especially in the dances, or on the occasion of the "wooden bar" that the groom from outside town had to overcome in order to be able to marry a girl from the village. The young locals demanded a fee from the groom, which they would then spend in company, in exchange for the girl he (metaphorically) took away.
A testimony collected last year revealed that during the war, partisans who operated in the mountains of Magnano used wooden masks so as not to be recognised by the residents during their movements.
The folk group Chino Ermacora of Tarcento uses the tomâts in its own dance called "The masks". In 1968, Olvino Del Medico created masks for the group for the staging of this dance full of symbolic figures. The dance finds inspiration in the ancient folklore of the Torre valley - Tarcento in particular - with close relevance to the millenary tradition of the pignarûi, the large bonfires that to this day light up on Epiphany night throughout Tarcento’s hamlets. The event puts an end the Advent and Christmas period and marks the beginning of the joyful time of Carnival. During the dance, in fact, a young female dancer wearing the Carnival mask bursts and casts out the old Epiphany witch.
Carving a tomât: modalities and woods
The authors of the masks were not sculptors, often not even wood craftsmen, indeed most of them were humble masons or farmers, who almost always wore the masks themselves.
The Tarcento Carnival, having no characteristic figures or characters to represent, allowed mask-makers to give free rein to their imagination. Some peculiar facial expressions were dictated by the natural conformation of the wood: a knot, a cut branch or other. Wood was not lacking given the richness of forests. The choice of wood preferably fell on: willow - very present in the vineyards at the time; alder - for its reddish colour; walnut - which does not split and has no ribbing; linden - a decorative tree easily found in the nearby woods; elm, poplar, mulberry, or other wood that had unique conformations (knots, grooves, protuberances) suitable for exploitation to create bizarre and disfiguring aspects, typical of this type of masks. “What could be considered wood defects became its peculiarities”.1
Some mask-makers chose roots or stumps which already had human-like features, in such a way that with a few tweaks the mask was ready. Special care was taken in modelling the horribly deformed features. The dark and contrasting colours, the addition of lumps, pig or boar teeth, horns, horsehair or pig hair for beards, moustaches or eyebrows, made the masks' appearance even more frightening.2 Horsehair and animal hair were tied with leather straps and fastened with tacks. Sometimes moustaches and beards were directly carved in the wood.
In the inner part of certain tomâts, at the height of the mouth - especially if the mask was pierced from side to side - a leather tongue was attached, which was held in the mouth to prevent the tomât from being raised by any onlookers who tried to violate the sacredness of anonymity. Faces of men were generally depicted, rarely of old women, animals or devils, and they were often equipped with hair made from straw, lambskin or horsehair, and completed with handkerchiefs or hats.
The nose, very often applied and removable, could be interchangeable, which allowed variations to the mask during the same Carnival. The nose was applied with nails or screws, either because of a disproportionate or misshapen size but also because of the difficulty, at the time, of working a single piece of wood to create very protruding noses.
The mouth, often deformed as well, could be completed with carved or added teeth both in wood as well as with real animal teeth, or other materials. In some cases, the tongue came out of the mouth and it too could be made of wood or other material. The cheeks were often furrowed by deep wrinkles that further worsened their appearance.
The finishing was usually left to the striking marks of the gouge while some masks were finished with rasp, sandpaper, a scourer or a piece of glass. The colouring could be done in a refined way as well or by using simple colours of a bricklayer or house painter, verdigris, stucco and brick dust, or finished with shoe polish or animal fats.
The internal finish - which was to guarantee the wearability of the mask - could be refined accurately or with coarse gouge marks that very often caused wounds to the wearer's face. Sometimes the interior was padded to avoid direct contact of the face with the wood if it was not well carved.
To support the masks, often heavy, they were tied over the head with large twine or cloth tapes. A string started from the chin of the mask and was tied to back of the head to prevent it from being lifted by some prankster.
The making process began with a piece of wood with a diameter of about 30 cm and a height of at least 25 cm placed horizontally and blocked on the work bench. Sometimes sketches or drawings were used, but the tomât generally was and already is in the head and heart of the mask-maker, so there were few signs that he traced on the wood and that disappeared as he began to use chisels and gouges. "Such originally unique artefacts, each child of a moment and a unique and unrepeatable chisel.” These were the words of Walter Tomada in an article presenting the volume Tomâts: a century of wooden masks in Tarcento. Proportion and symmetry were fundamental: the distance of the holes for the eyes to allow good sight, the position of the mouth to facilitate speaking and breathing, and the recess of the nose in the interior.
From a testimony that I collected years ago in Sammardenchia from Attilio Vidoni I learned that in addition to the most common tools that were in every house as saws and hatchets of various sizes, the scraper was used as well - an instrument used to remove bark from wood poles or to produce construction planks - and the spin - a hoe-shaped gouge - used especially in the initial part of the rear carving. Some tools, such as gouges and chisels, were built specifically in the forges of Domenico Vidoni or Arturo Sommaro, both from Sammardenchia. The tomât was polished on the stump with the saw and hatchet, subsequently worked with gouges and chisels, and the back was carefully refined so that it could be worn comfortably. Only male masks were realised and every year new ones were produced because each vintage of conscripts did not want to wear masks made years earlier. The masks were not always painted by the mask-maker himself but by others with a more capable hand.
Mask-makers today use the same types of wood but also try their hand at experimenting with new cores given the greater availability. Among these, Swiss pine wood - a high-altitude Dolomite wood of which the cut is curtailed - which although rich in nodes is easy to work and is chosen above all for its lightness.
The commercial offer of gouges and chisels today is very wide both in terms of shape and size. The wooden mallet replaced the hammers or iron mallets of the past; usually cylindrical, with different weights and a handle of variable length, it is widely used to optimise the effort especially in the early stages of the draft.
Experimentation has become common in the decoration stages as well, ranging from the natural finish - when the wood grain is peculiar - to natural colour variations in the different depths of the wood, such as in mulberry wood. Otherwise they are finished with waxes of different colours. Acrylic or oil colours are also used, subsequently refined with polished waxes or ageing waxes and finally rubbed with fine wool to obtain a very effective light and dark effect. Alternatively, a mixture of water, glue, concrete and fine sand is used to give the mask a very rough finish. Oftentimes, as was done in the past, the mask-maker entrusts the colouring of his masks to skilled and expert hands.
The positioning of the mask on the work bench has changed as well, from the horizontal resting on the bench to a vertical or oblique position with the consequent construction of special workbenches. The latter allow a greater and continuous control of the depth of the shapes on both sides of the mask.
The modification of the working position is the result of the contacts between various mask-makers from other Italian regions - or even from abroad - at conferences and meetings, which are an opportunity for everyone to learn about technical innovations, new materials and tools.
These are the main processes in the making of the tomât: once the piece of wood is fixed on the workbench, a draft is made with the larger gouges; the eye position is defined first, as it must allow the wearer good visibility, and the distance of the axes between one eye and the other must be of seven centimetres. Afterwards, the shape of the nose and above all the mouth is defined; if made in a U shape, it gives the mask a smiling expression, if sideways or downwards, it represents instead a serious, sorry or angry face. These elements can be strongly deformed to allow greater characterisation of the mask. When carving the interior of the mask, making sure there is room for the nose is crucial, because the mask should be as close as possible to the face of the wearer for it to be comfortable. While carving the back of the mask, the maker wears it to check its good fit. It takes two days to make a tomât.
Mask-makers of yesterday and today.
Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri wrote in 19671: "The best mask-maker in Coia, and more precisely in the hamlet of Zucje (Zucchia), was Lodovico Toso - Vico dai Tôs (1878 - 1915) 2, from whose hands came beautiful masks, with very pronounced facial features, almost in a grotesque form. Lodovico Toso's masks served as models for other living makers, including Augusto Del Medico - Gusto Pirinici, Ottavio Volpe - Tavio de Massime, Mario and Corrado Zaccomer, Guido and Olvino Del Medico and Cesare Toso. Other mask-makers in Coia were Francesco Muzzolini, Antonio Vidoni - Toni de Sare, Domenico Del Medico - Meni de Surîs and Alceo Muzzolini - Alceo Vergòn. Olvino Del Medico was inspired by Lodovico Toso, and all facial features are exaggerated in his masks. Almost all mask-makers were also the entertainers of the masquerades and came up with the strît, that is, the mocking bit. Among the entertainers, a special mention goes to Pietro Muzzolini - Pieri Vergòn, father of Alceo". Afterward, famous mask-makers in Coia include Remo Toso (1923 - 2003), who realised masks with mocking and irreverent expressions, and Renato Biasizzo, a building contractor, whose masks were characterised by the rich variety of expressions drawn from caricatures and traditional tomâts.
Arrigo Toso, Lodovico's grandson, also worked in Zucchia, but was oriented towards research and tastes different from tradition. The sons of Lodovico Toso, Tullio and Ubaldo, also built masks; Tullio enjoyed playing in the masquerades as well, while Ubaldo was a skilled painter of churches and therefore of masks too.
Noteworthy mask-makers in Zomeais include: Guido Boezio (1916 - 1987), a textile worker, with his characteristic pink masks with a wide and flattened cut of the face and good-natured expressions. Riccardo Floreani (1914 - 1994), whose masks are characterised by the essentiality of the elements that make up the face. Giovanni Nicoletti (1914 - 1989), with his highly expressive masks, many of which were left in their natural state, without any colouring.
In Sammardenchia, on the other hand: Aldo Micco (1934 - 2000), the cooper, whose masks presented a strong personality, with strongly deformed faces and coloured with strident shades. Attilio Vidoni - Tilio di Zoi (1926 - 2014) with characteristic unpainted masks, but only wax coated. Ferruccio Vidoni - Ferucio di Zoi (1935), author of a limited production of exposed wooden masks, refined with wax. Fernando Vidoni - Nando il Lunc (1912 - 1991), of whom few masks are preserved. An honourable mention goes to Sergio Micco (1935 - 2018) from Sammardenchia, who can be considered the last mask-maker operating before the earthquake, and "father" of the subsequent makers in the territory, a precious witness of the old masquerades. In Tomâts, a video by prof. Valter Colle, Sergio says: “I made my first mask when I was 15 years old, learning from my father, Aldo. I made it out of necessity, in fact I had to use it for the masquerade. All the young people went out of their way to make them for personal use. When I went to cut wood in the forest and I happened to find some core that seemed suitable for me, I'd put it aside and let it dry in the winter, so that it wouldn't split, and I carved it in the evenings or on rainy days". In the introduction to the video, Valter Colle wrote: “This short video is dedicated to those who, with all their skills and stubbornness, still know how to pass on ancient practices and traditions despite everything... like the mask-makers of Tarcento who, despite the radical transformation of the local carnival traditions, have been able to continue and hand down the archaic practice of creating traditional face masks from wood".
In 1996, while listing a series of mask-makers in the catalogue of the exhibition organised by the CICT, Andreina Ciceri concluded note no. 59 of the essay Masks and masquerades in the Alto Torre (in Tarcint and Valadis de Tôr – Tarcento and the Torre valley), wondering about the future of mask-makers in the territory: "What about tomorrow?”. The presence of over twenty mask-makers active today in Tarcento might be the right answer.
Immediately after the earthquake of 1976 it was "the look from outside"3 - as prof. Gian Paolo Gri described it - that brought back to light the discovery of the tomâts and gave them value. "It was a rediscovery for locals as well, who found the strength and desire to return to themselves and recover their culture"4. Some locals were tempted to resume the mask-making art, faithful to traditional models despite the temporary interruption of the local Carnival. Luigi Revelant was the architect of this recovery, involving local schools, taking care of the catalogues and the exhibitions, organising conferences, encouraging the resumption of the strîts and bringing together the few mask-makers left in the area.
The mask-makers: Sergio Micco, who passed away in February 2018, was mentioned previously and embodied the continuity between the past and the present. Dino Vaccari, born in Sammardenchia in 1944, learned the mask-making technique from his cousins and made the tools for working them himself. The earthquake put an end to his work, which he resumed in the early nineties, making the tomâts which were used different Carnivals and displayed at an exhibition in 2002. Remo Del Medico, born in Coia in 1947, returned to his hometown at the beginning of the nineties after years of emigration, where he devoted himself to the making of tomâts, thus continuing the tradition of his father Olvino, an active mask-maker until the eighties. Luigi Revelant, born in 1951, stimulated by the relationships with the three mask-makers, also dedicated himself to carving wooden masks, focusing on their wearability and lightness. He also started organising courses for mask carvers and found valuable support in the local council.
The workshops brought forth a new group of mask-makers which today counts more than twenty carvers. Aniceto Revelant, born in Billerio in 1931 and deceased in 2018, had long breathed the air of a "historic" hamlet for tomâts, and after perfecting the technique he successfully dedicated himself to masks. Sergio Ganzitti, born in Zomeais in 1953, is an advocate for local popular culture and has supported, as a public administrator, the revival of the local Carnival tradition. He also dedicates himself to carving tomâts, but prefers to finish his masks with striking gouge marks and relies on the skills of painters or other mask-makers for the colouring of his creations. Walter Gualtiero Della Schiava (1945 - 2013), passionate about the local Carnival tradition, dedicated himself to carving using mostly lime, leaving his masks in the natural colour of the wood or simply refined with waxes. Fabio Polla, from Billerio, fell in love with wooden masks and attended a workshop for carving, after which he started producing masks. Marco Olivo, born in 1963 in Tarcento, where he gets to know the local wooden masks; intrigued, he begins to carve some to be used in strîts, of which he is a promoter. His masks are characterised by their comfortable wearability. Gianni Moro, born in Tarcento in 1947, began sculpting masks after taking part in one of the first carving courses. Enzo Baselli, born in 1949 and living in Segnacco, after years of drawing experience with the pyrograph dedicated himself to carving masks which are characterised by evident gouge marks and unique colouring. Italo Rovere, living in Tarcento, has been a wood craftsman until a few years ago, when he decided to free himself from constraints of mandatory measures and began working wood with more freedom and imagination, focusing on the production of masks. Ezio Cescutti, living in Magnano in Riviera, successfully ventured into the carving of wooden masks after several experiences in figurative art. With imagination and ability, he always gives different forms to his masks, finishing them with new painting techniques that give a modern tone to the classic tomâts. Andrea Agnoletti, born in 1977 and living in Talmassons, met the mask-makers at a regional event and became immediately interested in their activity. He soon acquired the manual skills needed to realise his imaginative tomâts. Enrico Pilotto, born in Tarcento in 1967, approached masks at a local event; in a short time, he became skilled in carving and refining. Igino Boschetti, born in Tarcento in 1950, found a wooden mask in an antiques market which pushed him to learn about this reality and, after attending a workshop, became a mask-maker as well. Giulio Antoniutti, born in 1976 and living in Tarcento, after attending a workshop for children organised by mask-makers, he is fascinated by the making of tomâts. He immediately took part in the course and dedicated himself to carving with application and enthusiasm. Franco Desomaro, born in 1956, lives in Udine. Passionate about wood as raw material for various artistic forms, he passionately dedicated himself to mask making. He is the author of the participation in Telethon of I Mascarârs di Tarcint5 (Tarcento’s Mask-makers) where every year, in the twenty-four hours of the relay race, a huge mask is realised. Kabyr Frisano, born in 1985, lives in Udine. He frequently came to work in Tarcento where, in a tavern, he came across the traditional local Carnival. He became passionate about this form of satire and its characteristic masks and became a promoter and carver himself. Luca Trink, born in 1957, lives in Mels di Majano. His passion for theatre led him to experience the strîts; shortly thereafter he discovered the tomâts and started carving them as well. Noteworthy are two female mask-makers as well. Dileta Tomadini, who lives in Billerio; enthusiastic about tomâts, she approached the carving activity, and her previous painting experience facilitates her in finishing and colouring her masks and those of other carvers. Eleonora Zaccomer, living in Magnano in Riviera; she attended the art institute and her artistic inclination brought her closer to the reality of the mask-makers in Tarcento, where she immediately showed creativity and an excellent hand in refinement. In recent times, more have approached the wood-carving world. Marco Trink, who inherited the passion from his father; Michele Siega, who is also interested in the construction of wooden krampus; Raffaele Revelant, born in Billerio, who grew up surrounded by the charm of tomâts; and Diego Biasizzo who, after receiving an old tomât as a gift, approached the world of wooden masks. Many other mask-makers in the area occasionally dedicate themselves to the construction of tomâts, particularly during Carnival.
On the occasion of the exhibition held in Tarcento at Palazzo Frangipane in 2004, in which the Ciceri Collection of masks and a recent production of the area’s carvers were displayed, Dr. Stefano Morandini wrote in his essay Tomâts o burutinis: “The creations of the mascarârs (mask-makers) in recent years are a dialogue between tradition and innovation. From a functional point of view, there is no difference between those showcased here and those of the younger carvers: they are all "masks for use" and "not to be attached to the wall", as Luigi Revelant would have said".
Tarcento’s Carnival today.
"In the end, of course, all awareness of the ancient popular rites was lost and we disguised ourselves purely for playful purposes, while maintaining an ancestral feeling of the obligation of continuity", said Professor Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri as early as 1982.
Of all the Carnival traditions of the past only the strîts have remained, which were originally interpreted by the ugly group, while the part related to the dance in the town’s houses and in the taverns, interpreted by the beautiful group, fell completely out of use.
“You must know, the idea of recovering this type of Carnival came to a man named Luigi Revelant... who had nothing to do with Sammardenchia". The quote comes from the first pages of 10 ains di... scùmul (Ten years of… garbage), a publication by the masked group Scùmul in 2007, on the tenth anniversary of its establishment. This provides help in dating and recognising the authorship of the resumption of Tarcento’s carnival. Indeed, it was Luigi Revelant who successfully promoted the recovery of the strîts in 1997, after a fleeting and isolated experience occurred in 1993 in which the hamlets of Sammardenchia, Coia and Ciseriis had participated. Immediately afterwards, the Scùmul group was formed in Sammardenchia, taking the name from the place where the things that were considered useless were thrown away – a landfill of some sort, thus metaphorically recovering something that was no longer used. The following year, in 1998, they presented their first strît, about childbirth. “Scùmul: a spontaneous group of young people, the last performers of the tavern theatre with tomâts”. As Stefano Morandini explains it: “They usually met just before Carnival, to develop a draft of the plot. ”2 The group Virus pegri - a virus that slowly affects all bystanders - was formed in 2005, while the debut of the group I rusclis - from ruscus, or butcher's broom, to indicate the pungent nature of their strîts - took place in 2013. In recent years, the group has been accompanied by some musicians, somewhat echoing the custom of the old masked groups. Noteworthy, in 2003, an isolated performance of the group La gote (The drop) from Segnacco and an occasional staging by the theatre company of the association La Clape di Crosis (The lot from Crosis) from Ciseriis and Zomeais. The other three groups are still active today. All the strîts are performed in the Friulian language and are among the few forms of spontaneous theatre still encountered in the area to this day.
The organisation of the strît usually takes place with a first meeting of the participants, during which the theme of the representation is decided, tracing the most significant events of the past year, both local and external to the community. Subsequently, the key characters and the roles are assigned, and the taverns in which the group will perform are decided. Somebody comes up with the initial plot, which is then integrated and modified with a contribution from the participants until the final script is ready, although it is never definitive. This is because not everyone is always present, or some joke about the latest facts is added last minute. The movements and stage presence of the characters are arranged, but are to be adapted from time to time according to the spaces available in the taverns.
Everyone looks for the most suitable clothes for the character they will portray, making use of accessories or work tools which fit the role and finally, the tomâts. The Sammardenchia group makes use of the inexhaustible supply of tomâts of mask-maker Sergio Micco, identifying the most suitable ones, or Sergio, full of patience, gently carves specific masks for new characters – a cow’s head, Bin Laden, non-EU citizens... Within the other two groups instead, which also include some women, there are some mask-makers who produce them or make them available. The joyous reversal of roles often occurs, where women play the part of a man, while the opposite is now well-established.
The groups are thus finally ready for the masquerade. The head of the party enters the tavern first, introduces the troupe and explains the reason behind this ‘doing theatre’, asking for the silence and attention of those present. Although hospitality has been granted, the noisy entrance of the masks is not always welcomed with interest. Having overcome the difficulties of the ‘premiere’, the group travels from tavern to tavern, the satire becomes more fluid and is often adapted to the place where it is performed. Sometimes the audience joins in the dialogues, and the group - carefully sticking to the plot - joyfully interacts, thus making the act participatory. Improvisation sometimes helps to get out of moments of impasse but returning to the agreed script is essential in order not to lose the word or key phrase which introduces the next joke. However, the leader or the sharp-witted of the group are always ready to intervene and resolve moments of difficulty with a joke, a clap from the audience, a suggestion or anticipating the entry of a character. Real and sincere applause comes spontaneously from the present and loyal audience. At the end the group leaves and then returns as in the theatre to take a bow; the Sammardenchia group takes off the masks revealing their identity, the other groups usually do not - if so, it is an individual choice - and finally enjoy what is offered by the generosity of the host.
"Strîts and tomâts are our history, but in order not to forget it, the tradition must be alive, genuine, filled with the taste of laughing and the happiness of hearing laughter, driven by the courage to denounce the master and the honesty to make fun of the servant" - as written on the Friulian text published by Scùmul on the tenth anniversary of its foundation. The masked groups end the evening with a dinner party, not with the food gathered, but in some typical tavern or frasca.
On the occasion of the Conference The future of Alpine carnivals, between research and revival held in Tarcento in 2004, Gian Paolo Gri - then professor of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Udine - stated in his essay: "I like that in Tarcento the groups of young people who ran the Carnival were once called Bande rabiose (Mad band) and today Scùmul (Garbage). Carnival lives on if it has the ability to move across boundaries, to put back into circulation the used, the old and the thrown away. I am pleased to see the central role of the tomâts in this recovery, with their uncanny ability. I am impressed by this contradiction between the renewed vitality of many Alpine Carnivals on one side and the decline of other Carnival rituals linked to youth rites of passage on the other. And I like to imagine a re-proposal of Carnival which could become contagious and could impact on other situations, other contexts, other areas which would benefit from the game of desecration, of deformation, of irreverence, of nonconformity, of the taste for mockery, of irony founded on self-irony. God knows it would be necessary: these are features that society and young people cannot afford to lose."
Exhibitions, conferences, symposia and workshops.
The tomâts were the subject of a first exhibition in Tarcento in 1982 on the occasion of the epiphany celebrations. The Exhibition of the masks of the Alto Torre was promoted by the Municipality and curated by prof. Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri, who presented the wooden masks of the territory, collected by her husband Luigi Ciceri and donated to the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions of Udine - now the Ethnographic Museum of Friuli.
The presentation brochure of the exhibition Tomaz - Exhibition of the carnival wooden masks of Tarcento, held in Tarcento at Palazzo Frangipane in the summer of 1987 by the CICT (Centre for Cultural Initiatives of Tarcento) stated: “In conclusion, we would like this review to become a stimulus, an encouragement to recover this fascinating tradition in its Friulian version. And let's not forget that Friuli, as Ippolito Nievo said, is a small compendium of the universe". The appeal has not fallen on deaf ears. The group of people who had been particularly involved in the realisation of the exhibition at the time included: Vittorio Battistuzzo, Dino Durigatto, Giselda Lucatello, Gianpietro Maroello, Luigi Revelant and Carlo Vidoni.
Already in 1988, the CICT proposed a new exhibition, Tomàz - Wooden masks of Tarcento (Friuli), held in Milan in the art gallery Studio Bramante - an exhibition of over fifty masks by Guido Boezio, Olvino Del Medico, Riccardo Floreani, Sergio Micco, Alceo Muzzolini, Giovanni Nicoletti, Arrigo Toso and Remo Toso.
In 1993, on Epiphany, the first symposium of mask-makers was organised in Tarcento (by Il Laboratorio of Udine), called Tomàz - Ancient charm, new emotions and it was held in via Roma and piazza Roma, with the participation of sculptors from all over the Alps.
In 1994, always on Epiphany, the meeting Tomàz - Ancient charm, new emotions was enriched with the presentation of the Ladin Carnival of the Val di Fassa, "one of the most interesting and documented in the Eastern Alps". A research on Carnival is also presented, curated by Il Laboratorio and in collaboration with the teachers and students of the local middle school. Subsequently, some local carvers gifted the school with masks based on drawings made by the pupils. All thanks to the careful organisation of Luigi Revelant and several collaborators from Tarcento.
The third edition of Tomàz - Ancient charm, new emotions took place on 4-6 January 1995, with the participation of guest mask-makers and the presentation of I Rölar from Sauris, in the presence of prof. Gian Paolo Gri and the opening of a photo exhibition of wooden masks at the Alpe Adria shopping centre.
In 1996, the tomâts were exhibited in Cividale as part of the Scaramatte Carnival party.
After a few years of silence, in 2000 an exhibition and a conference on the wooden masks was organised at the Colonos of Villacaccia di Lestizza for the event In file (In line). Another symposium took place during the patronal celebrations of Saint Peter, supported by the municipal administration, with local carvers Remo Del Medico, Sergio Micco and Luigi Revelant.
In January 2002 Remo Del Medico, Sergio Micco, Luigi Revelant and Dino Vaccari - with the name I mascarârs di Tarcint (Tarcento’s Mask-makers) - presented their tomâts at the Alpe Adria shopping centre, with the aim of "supporting with conviction a specific tradition of our lands and actively respond to the stereotypes of the globalised and standardised Carnival ".
Also in 2002, the Municipality of Tarcento promoted the symposium of sculpture of wooden masks Su la Maschera! – Put the Mask on! - as named by Luigi Revelant - in the "large and bright spaces of the Luciano Ceschia European Centre, which could not be a more perfect location". In addition to the local mask-makers, the guests included Osvaldo Casanova and Pierfrancesco Solero from Sappada, Silvana Buttera from Rodda and Ermanno Plozzer from Sauris. The book Storiis e mascaris dal carnevâl di Tarcint (History and masks of Tarcento’s Carnival), published by the Municipality, was also presented by Valter Colle. The book gathers texts written by Meni Ucèl (Otmar Muzzolini) and Paolo Pellarini, which bring together the testimonies of the elders on the tradition of tomâts and strîts as collected by Gigi Revelant and Sergio Ganzitti, who also translated them into the Friulian language.
In March 2003, the Municipality organised the exhibition Once upon a time at Carnival at Palazzo Frangipane, where "a rich display of images and texts illustrates the Carnivals of the past". Various items were made available for the exhibition by private individuals. A document from 1662 dedicated to Giovanni Battista Frangipane - patron of the arts and Lord of Castello, Porpetto and Tarcento - written by Iacobo Medico (perhaps Jacopo del Medico) made a fine display. The document is a playbill that announces a show in eleven scenes, partly written in the Friulian language and with actors from Tarcento, Magnano, Tricesimo and Segnacco. The themes are typical of Carnival, so it is fair to assume that strîts have such ancient origins. Furthermore, the second symposium Su la Maschera! - Put the Mask on! is organised at the Ceschia Centre as well, in the presence of international sculptors, the presentation of the Hungarian carnival of Moahcs and a workshop on sculpture of wooden masks under the supervision of Feliciano Costa, a carver from Moena, and Carlo Vidoni, a painter from Tarcento specialised in the colouring of wooden masks. Moreover, a new photo exhibition named Tomâts is organised by photo club Helice in Tarcento. The video Strîts and tomâts: Tarcento’s Carnival, realised by director Carlo Della Vedova on behalf of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Tarcento, is also presented. The video was produced in the Italian, Friulian and English languages for the ever-growing interest in the local Carnival traditions. The music that accompanies the video includes the song Mateçs (Jests) by master Marco Maiero from Tricesimo, which is dedicated to tomâts.
In February 2004, the tomâts flew to Thessaloniki, in Greece, as the only guests of the exhibition Carnival wooden masks of the Eastern Alps, organised by the Italian Cultural Institute at its headquarters. With a particularly creative setting, cultural attaché Ezio Peraro presented Tarcento’s Carnival to a large audience by wearing a tomât while dressed as a hypothetical farmer from Friuli.
In 2004 the Municipality, together with the association Alpine Mask-makers, prepared a rich programme for the enhancement of Tarcento’s Carnival by organising the third edition of Put the Mask on!, a symposium that saw the participation of 12 mask-makers including one from Cerkno (Slovenia) - home to a famous Carnival - which was held at Palazzo Frangipane where the temporary exhibition Tomâts e burutinis was also located. The exhibition displays the tomâts of the Ciceri collection made available by the Ethnographic Museum of Udine and was presented by curator Tiziana Ribezzi. Next to the museum masks, the most recently produced masks of local carvers were also exhibited. Anthropologists Gian Paolo Gri and Stefano Morandini spoke at the opening of the exhibition, highlighting the importance of the work that Luigi Revelant and the municipal administration had been doing. Morandini describes Tarcento as the hometown of tomâts. The conference The future of Alpine Carnivals, between research and proposal followed, with speakers Cesare Poppi, Franco Castelli, Roberto Dapit, Gianluigi Secco, Alexis Bètemps, Stefano Morandini and Gian Paolo Gri, moderated by Luigi Revelant.
In 2005, the rich programme of the fourth edition of Put the mask on! had two venues in Tarcento and Tolmezzo. In Tarcento, the symposium was held in the presence of twelve sculptors including two Austrians, one Hungarian and two Slovenes. The guest Carnival of Imst (Austria) and the realisation in the main square of the "trunk of masks” - formed by the concentric overlapping of masks made by each participant - were also presented. A mask carving workshop was held as well, under the artistic direction of Engelbert Demetz. In Tolmezzo, in collaboration with the Carnic Museum of Popular History, a comparison between ancient and current masks made it possible to outline the continuity of this tradition; in addition, a symposium was held in the presence of six sculptors.
In 2006, the edition of Put the Mask on! had a smaller programme which included the exhibition of masks made by elementary school children and the presentation of the Proceedings of the 2004 conference.
In 2008, during the Festival of Hearts - the world folklore festival held in Tarcento - some local carvers gave the audiences ancient emotions by carving characteristic wooden masks in the main square.
In 2009, on Epiphany, carvers from Tarcento participated for the first time in Put the Mask on! Carnival’s tomorrow, organised by I Mascarârs di Tarcint (Tarcento’s mask-makers) - the new-born association which brings together carvers from Tarcento. Their presence is celebrated with a Carnival-themed showcase in the city centre. In May, some carvers participate at Sapori Pro loco in Passariano, thus exporting the knowledge of tomâts outside the municipal area. Their presence at the Festival of Hearts is also repeated. The year marks the participation of the carvers in two significant Carnic events: Mistîrs (Crafts) in Paularo and The Magic of wood in Sutrio, to which they have since been well-received guests. The year ends with a mask carving workshop held in Billerio, organised by the Alpine Mask-makers in collaboration with the Municipality of Magnano in Riviera, which is repeated in the following years as well.
2010 begins with the second edition of Put the Mask on! Carnival’s tomorrow, among the epiphany events in Tarcento. The show Geo & Geo by national broadcaster RAI is also interested in Tarcento’s Carnival, and director Isabella De Felici brought it into the spotlight on national television, thus rewarding the work of the many who strived for the enhancement of this characteristic Carnival.
In 2011, the association I Mascarârs di Tarcint (Tarcento’s mask-makers) organised a meeting in Billerio called Tomâts: masks of yesterday and today in the Tarcento area, where speakers Stefano Morandini, from the University of Udine, and Luigi Revelant, president of Alpine Mask-makers, illustrated, to an increasingly interested public, the peculiarities of the Friulian Carnivals and particularly the one in Tarcento. "In our Ethnographic Museum, the masks come out - as per tradition - only at Carnival, often to be exhibited in temporary exhibitions and then return to their museum routine of crystallized and aseptic time”. This is a brief excerpt of Morandini's intervention who also recalls: “after the exhibition of the Tomâts set up by Luigi Ciceri in 1983, Tarcento has become a laboratory of study and observation of the wooden masks”.
In 2012, I Mascarârs di Tarcint, during Put the Mask on! Carnival’s tomorrow, portrayed the figure of the Old Venerando, to whom they dedicated the first series of themed masks, an event which is still repeated to this day. Put the mask on! is presented again, at its eleventh edition, albeit in different locations. The association Alpine Mask-makers subsequently presented a programme full of events in collaboration with the Municipality. Twenty-five sculptors from the Alps but also from Sardinia, Austria and Slovenia were present at the symposium. A workshop called Hands on the mask is then organised, allowing children to create simple but fascinating wooden masks with their own hands and take them home. Local folk group Chino Ermacora, in a nocturnal performance, presents its repertoire of popular dances including Masks, in which dancers wear tomâts. For the first time, Tarcento’s masks created by Luigi Revelant are used in a theatre play, produced by Farie Teatrâl Furlane (Friulian Theatre Company) and staged for the first time at Mittelfest in Cividale by Gigi Dall'Aglio, entitled Siums - Dreams.
2013 opens with the exhibition of forty tomâts in Bovec, a Slovenian town twinned with the city of Tarcento. Set up by the association I Mascarârs di Tarcint – Tarcento’s mask-makers in collaboration with the local administration, it has been able to capture the interest of many people both among children and adults, some of whom wanted to learn more about the construction and finishing techniques of the masks. The children, accompanied by their teachers - at times fearful of the masks which often depict scary grins – had the chance to discover the charm of wooden masks and to draw their way of seeing them on paper with different colours. In December, Tarcento’s tomâts were guest at an exhibition of masks in Malborghetto, together with the local krampus.
In 2014, I Mascarârs di Tarcint joined the project Museums, exhibitions and moments, promoted by the Dolce Nord Est consortium, and opened their doors to children for the creation of small masks made with plasticine by titling the meeting And you? Which tomât are you? The event met the enthusiasm of the young participants and allowed them to discover the masks and the Tarcento Carnival through guided visit to the Cjase dai tomâts (The house of tomâts). The event was included for some years in the association's programme.
In 2015, the Municipality organised the Festival of Peoples. An encounter of knowledge and, in collaboration with I Mascarârs di Tarcint, the event Tomâts meet krampus was held at Villa Moretti, where local mask-makers came together with the Austrians and their krampus in a mutual exchange of carving techniques for wooden masks used for Carnival and for St. Nicholas, respectively. A brief note on Krampus: Once upon a time, in times of famine, the young people of the small mountain towns used to dress up using furs made up of feathers and animal skins and horns. Being so unrecognisable, they went around terrorizing the inhabitants of nearby villages, robbing them of the supplies needed for winter season. After some time, the young people realised, however, that among them was an impostor: it was the devil himself, who had entered the group taking advantage of his real diabolical face, but was only recognisable from its goat’s hoof-shaped legs. The bishop Nicholas was therefore called upon to exorcise the terrifying presence. The devil defeated, the young people - disguised as demons - paraded along the streets of the villages every year, no longer to plunder but to bring gifts or to "beat up bad children", accompanied by the figure of the bishop who had vanquished evil.
In the same year, at the Telethon - a fund-raising relay race for research organised in Udine -, I Mascarârs di Tarcint were present with a 24-hour sculpture race to create a giant tomât which would be delivered to a sponsor, with funds donated to Telethon. The event recurred over the following years.
In 2016, I Mascarârs di Tarcint, in collaboration with associations Lis Mascaris (The Masks) of Morsano di Strada and Storie dai Longobards (Lombardic Histories), participated at the exhibition Masks, between tradition and innovation in Trieste, with the patronage of the President of the Regional Council of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. “A beautiful exhibition of Tomâts, the wooden masks of Tarcento, arrives in the spaces of the Regional Council in Trieste, the heart of the institutional life of our Region. A sign of the sensitivity of the institution and of the tenacity of those who have strived in recent decades to save, revitalise and re-enact a tradition close to becoming only a trace and silent testimony in some museum collection, or in some nostalgic re-enactment in local publications."3 The event allowed a comparison between the traditional Tarcento masks and the modern and colourful Morsano masks.
In 2017, I Mascarârs di Tarcint are guests of the Ethnographic Museum of Udine, where the numerous wooden masks collected in the territory by the Ciceri are exhibited. They represented Tarcento’s Carnival to the participants in the workshop by demonstrating the mask-carving technique.
In February 2018, the exhibition Tomâts: the wooden masks of Tarcento’s Carnival was held in Tarcento, in the multi-purpose room Margherita. A collective exhibition with no less than 27 mask-makers who exhibited their works, and which was organised by I Mascarârs di Tarcint (Tarcento’s mask-makers), under the patronage of the Municipality of Tarcento and curated by Sergio Ganzitti. The exhibition was opened 36 years after the first one, which was organised by prof. Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri, and has gathered 187 masks realised from the late 80s to the present day.
On Epiphany in January 2019, I Mascarârs di Tarcint presented, at the Margherita, a rich programme of events called Put the Mask on! Carnival’s tomorrow. Rediscovering the old tomâts of Tarcento.
On January 4th, on the delivery of the Epiphany Prize, a selection of ancient wooden masks made in the first half of the last century was presented. In the following two days, an exhibition of themed masks relating to the "Characters of the Historical Epiphany Procession" was held, a five-year experience of the mascarârs. A workshop with the mask-makers at work and a display of their creations was also set up.
On Epiphany 2020, the association organised The tomâts meet the Hilzan Maschkars of Sauris in Tarcento, which involved the presentation of the Sauris Carnival and its exhibition at Palazzo Frangipane, while in the multi-purpose Margherita hall the Sauris and Tarcento mask-makers were exchanging techniques during a workshop.
Mask-makers’ Associations
The interest generated with the rediscovery of the Tarcento Carnival has attracted many people, which led Luigi Revelant to create an organisation that included the carnivals of the Alpine arc as well. This is how the association Alpine Mask-makers was born in 2002, on the initiative of a group of sculptors of wooden carnival masks, from various Alpine locations in the north-east of Italy. The consortium is a non-profit association which recognises itself in a ‘manifesto’ that enhances the tradition of Alpine carnivals, and particularly the wooden mask. The members put the awareness of the cultural value of their creations at the centre of their interest, together with the pleasure of meeting, of comparing and enriching each other's knowledge. Each year in the summer, mask-makers meet at an international sculpture symposium, which is held in rotation in the various Alpine locations where this tradition is still alive. The members come from Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Hungary.
Luigi Revelant became its first president and immediately organised the first conference, Put the Mask on!, in collaboration with the Municipality of Tarcento. It promoted all the town's activities related to wooden masks until 2008 (as illustrated in a previous chapter) but integrated them with workshops of mask sculpture held in Tarcento and Billerio, in addition to the workshops organised at the elementary school.
In January 2009, on the initiative of a group of fans of the Tarcento Carnival, the association I Mascarârs di Tarcint – Tarcento’s mask-makers was born, which aims to promote and spread the knowledge of the tomâts - the traditional carnival wooden masks -, of the strîts, of events and local realities connected to them, ethnographic and/or artistic exhibitions. It brings together a few “historical" mask-makers with a new generation of fans of all ages, who have approached the practice more recently. The founding members are: Italo Colautti, Gualtiero Della Schiava, Remo Del Medico, Sergio Ganzitti, Sergio Micco, Gianni Moro, Marco Olivo, Fabio Polla, Aniceto Revelant and Luigi Revelant. Sergio Ganzitti became the second president and continued what had already been started as a public administrator.
The association started cataloguing tomâts produced until 1985, following an invitation by scholar Andreina Nicoloso Ciceri 1, who stated: “Having a space dedicated to the preservation of all the copies, found and traceable, would be very important: I hope someone will do it”. Finding very old masks was particularly difficult for the reasons which were previously discussed in this article. However, the work was satisfactory:
