English to Greek: The Concept of Empathy
General field: Science
Detailed field: Philosophy
Source text - English
Empathy is considered as the ability to possess knowledge of the inner perspective of another being. There is a passage for me through a foreign being's expression, for example the look on his face, to his inner state of feelings. When I see somebody looking sad, then I know he is sad. This means that there is a motivation partly within me and partly outside of me that motivates a new perception in me, the foreign being's experience. What is motivated in me is not a feeling but a mental activity. I do not necessarily feel what he feels but I know how he feels and I begin to understand his being. Empathy is neither compassion, nor sympathy but the precondition of their occurrence. In particular, empathy is the sharing of subjective states as objective which leads us to the concept of intersubjectivity and the understanding of the objective world.
