Source text - Italian La storia di Casalborgone fino all’arrivo della famiglia Broglia
Nei secoli scorsi ci sono stati dei rinvenimenti archeologici che testimoniano la presenza di insediamenti romani risalenti al II secolo a.C. nel territorio casalborgonese. In epoca romana Casalborgone era chiamata “Trebledo”, ovvero “trebbieto” o “luogo ove vegeta la trebbia”, una pianta di cui venivano utilizzate le radici; altro nome che veniva usato era “Trebea”, probabilmente dal francese “très beat”, “beatissima”, aggettivo per la Vergine Maria. Nato romano, il villaggio di Trebea seguì le vicende di Roma fino alla caduta dell’Impero (476 d.C.). I popoli germanici, che avevano invaso i territori imperiali a partire dall’inizio del V secolo, si stabilirono nella zona tra il Po e il Tanaro, e fondarono nelle vicinanze di Trebea un gruppo di abitati che chiamarono “Casalis Bergoni”, verosimilmente dal nome di un proprietario. Questo, per circa un secolo, fece parte del potere temporale della Chiesa, prima di essere sottoposto alla giurisdizione del marchese di Monferrato nel XII secolo, e poi a quella dei conti Radicati di Cocconato.
Tra la fine del Duecento e la metà del Trecento, i piccoli villaggi della zona finirono per essere abbandonati quando, forse a causa della peste nera, la popolazione si spostò più vicina al Leu in cerca della protezione del signore del luogo. A quel tempo, infatti, Casale Bergonis era già un castello fortificato.
A metà del Trecento la contea di Cocconato, di cui faceva parte anche Casalborgone, passò in giurisdizione ai Paleologi, marchesi di Monferrato; i Radicati, quindi, da feudatari divennero vassalli. Nel secolo successivo i Radicati e i Savoia stipularono prima degli accordi che agevolassero i commerci, poi veri e propri trattati di alleanza. Nello stesso periodo, però, la famiglia dei Radicati di Cocconato soffrì aspri conflitti interni, dovuti alla larga espansione che aveva avuto: aveva dato origine a molti rami, ognuno dei quali vassallo di un territorio e facente capo al conte di Cocconato. Giovanni Radicati, conte di Casalborgone e capitano del Consortile di Cocconato, temendo un’imminente occupazione da parte del ducato sabaudo, approfittò dello stato di tensione per stipulare alleanze dell’intera comunità di Cocconato con il duca di Savoia e con il duca di Milano. All’inizio del Cinquecento, per decreto imperiale, i conti Radicati furono sottomessi al duca di Savoia, che ordinò lo smantellamento del castello di Casalborgone. Seguì una rivolta dei casalborgonesi contro il conte Raynero di Casalborgone, che giurò fedeltà come suo vassallo al duca di Savoia al fine di confermare i diritti giurisdizionali e i privilegi su acque, pescagioni, forni e via dicendo. Nel 1505, il duca di Savoia investì Giovanni e Alemanni Radicati, figli di Raynero, del Consortile dei Radicata; solo tredici anni dopo però i due fratelli vendettero il feudo di Casalborgone al duca di Savoia stesso. Tra gli anni ’30 del Cinquecento e la fine del secolo la proprietà del castello passò di mano in mano; nelle ultime decadi del XVI secolo i Radicati furono consignori del castello, con i quali si alternarono varie famiglie. Negli anni ’10 del 1600 Antonio Govean, un giurista e professore portoghese, acquistò l’intero feudo di Casalborgone per poi rivenderlo. I Radicati, nel frattempo, morirono nella terribile peste del 1630.
Nel 1638 la Madama Reale Maria Cristina di Savoia comprò il contado di Casalborgone e cedette la proprietà a Mario Broglia in cambio di metà – o della sesta parte - del castello di Agliè; il conte Mario, infatti, era vedovo di Catarina San Martino d’Agliè, e aveva ottenuto con la morte della consorte castelli, beni, ragioni feudali e giurisdizionali su questo contado.
Ferdinando Morozzo della Rocca
La famiglia Broglia discende da grandi personaggi – arcivescovi, capitani d’armata, conti, marchesi e principi -, e si porta dietro una storia secolare di matrimoni, guerre, grande sfarzo e sorti altalenanti.
Il casato trova la sua origine in Ardizzone, un nobile patrizio chierese, nel XII secolo: proveniva dal contado e, trasferitosi all’interno di Milano, divenne vassallo del vescovo della città. La famiglia si divise, poi, in due principali rami, di cui il primo, quello dei Garibaldi, si trasferì a Evian nel Chablis, e il secondo, che aveva mantenuto l’antico nome Broglia, si divise ancora tra la Francia e il Piemonte; il ramo francese dei Broglia, tuttora esistente, era stato insignito del titolo di duca e di principe del Sacro Romano Impero. I conti di Casalborgone hanno le loro radici nel casato dei Broglia detto “de’ Garibaldenghi”.
Da quando, nel Seicento, la Madama Reale Maria Cristina di Savoia cedette il castello a Mario Broglia, la proprietà passo di genitore in figlio per diverse generazioni fino al disfacimento di questo ramo della casata. Ferdinando Morozzo della Rocca fu l’ultimo conte Broglia di Casalborgone. Nato nel 1888, era figlio unico del tenente generale Costantino Morozzo della Rocca e Clementina Emilia Maria Broglia; aveva ereditato il titolo di conte alla morte dello zio materno Mario Carlo Broglia, figlio del conte Carlo Felice e ultimo erede maschio della casata. Ferdinando partecipò ad entrambe le guerre mondiali – e forse alla guerra d’Etiopia (1935-36) - in qualità di ufficiale dei Bersaglieri e fu due volte prigioniero di guerra. Nel 1919 si sposò con la contessa Sofia Bertini di Montaldo, e dieci anni dopo con Francesca Elsa Crespi, originaria di Milano e la cui famiglia era legata al “Corriere della Sera”. Con la nobildonna Crespi visse a Casalborgone fino alla sua morte, nel 1969.
Il castello fu quindi venduto all’industriale oleario Conrieri; questo restaurò interni ed esterni e fece risistemare i giardini. In seguito, però, la proprietà venne abbandonata e mobili e arredi originali venduti.
Il Castello di Casalborgone
Non si hanno conoscenze certe di cosa ci fosse nel punto dove ora si trova il castello prima del Duecento, quando vi si trovava un castrum di proprietà signorile. Anche il castello duecentesco, che era stato edificato sui resti di un’antica torre di proprietà dei radicati, fu demolito nel 1269 senza lasciare tracce.
Nel XIV secolo, a cause delle continue guerre che dilagavano in Piemonte, i paesi della zona erano infestati da compagnie di avventurieri assoldati inglesi, francesi e aragonesi. Una compagnia in particolare arrecò i maggiori danni nel territorio: chiamata dal marchese di Monferrato e capeggiata da Ribino del Pino, era una banda di ottomila soldati inglesi che devastò la campagna e s’impossessò di molti castelli. Questi attaccarono il Castello d’Ivrea e, quando il conte Amedeo VI di Savoia rispose al fuoco, lo sottomisero; la vendetta non si fece attendere: con l’aiuto dei Visconti di Milano, Amedeo VI vinse gli inglesi e li sterminò, facendoli impiccare agli alberi e lungo le strade. In seguito, il conte mosse guerra al Monferrato, che aveva chiamato gli inglesi, lo sconfisse ed occupò, tra gli altri, anche il castello di Casalborgone, che dipendeva dal marchesato di Monferrato.
Risalente alla fine del Quattrocento è lo splendido soffitto del salone degli stemmi, nella cui cornice risaltano gli stemmi araldici dei conti Broglia – croce azzurra in campo d’oro e motto Pour l’avenir -, ciascuno affiancato dallo stemma della famiglia della moglie, a raccontare la storia di unioni matrimoniali della casata.
All’inizio del Cinquecento il castello fu smantellato per ordine del duca Filiberto II di Savoia, per poi essere ricostruito e occupato dalle truppe francesi di Francesco I di Valois nel 1547.
Dopo che il castello divenne di proprietà della famiglia Broglia, come dono di Maria Cristina di Savoia, il duca Carlo Emanuele II (figlio della Madama Reale) risarcì i danni risalenti al secolo precedente con un’ingente somma di denaro. Con tali fondi, a metà del XVII secolo la tenuta fu riedificata e ampliata dai tre fratelli Costanzo del Villar San Costanzo, Pietro Luigi Broglia e Tommaso Francesco, abate dell’abazia dei Santi Vittore. Durante i lavori la corte centrale venne chiusa, furono costruiti il salone delle feste (che prima era un cortile interno) e i sottotetti, che avevano funzione di granai. Pochi anni dopo Pier Luigi Broglia commissionò la realizzazione della casa parrocchiale ai piedi delle mura, dei Giardini delle Delizie e della strada che cinge il castello, anche detta viale della Torricella. La cosiddetta “Torricella” è di origine antica: nel Duecento faceva parte della struttura difensiva e, fino alla fine del 1800, era adibita a deposito di ghiaccio, che veniva raccolto in inverno e utilizzato in estate. Mario Domenico Broglia, tra la metà e la fine del Settecento, fece invece decorare splendidamente il castello e restaurare le mura.
Nel 1706, con la guerra e l’assedio di Torino, il castello fu danneggiato nonostante fosse stato minato e Giovanni Pierluigi Broglia avesse ottenuto dal generale comandante che fosse risparmiato. Gli eventi di questa guerra causarono grandi perdite nel patrimonio della famiglia Broglia, che costrinsero Giovanni Pierluigi ad alienare molti beni in Torino, Casalborgone e San Sebastiano.
Altri edifici del Leu
Nella zona a ridosso dei muraglioni del castello, in piazza Statuto e all’inizio di via Broglia, si trovava un tempo una casa di proprietà del castello, abbattuta poi nel 1939 perché pericolante. Fino alla Grande Guerra questa era affittata a una famiglia di Casalborgone, che poi fu sfrattata per fare spazio ai prigionieri di guerra austroungarici. Dopo la liberazione dei detenuti, in casa furono spesso ospiti alcune dame legate ai conti Broglia, che trascorrevano qui le vacanze estive con figli e nipoti. L’appezzamento di terreno rimasto vuoto appartiene ora al comune di Casalborgone, in seguito a una cessione da parte del conte Ferdinando Morozzo della Rocca.
La chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena, anch’essa in piazza Statuto, sorse in epoca medievale come piccola cappella del castello dei conti Radicati. Solo verso la fine del XV secolo la chiesa divenne quella della comunità casalborgonese; rimane però ancora oggi un altare della famiglia Broglia, l’altare di San Giuseppe.
Translation - English The history of Casalborgone until the Broglias came
In the last centuries there have been archaeological findings that prove the presence of Roman settlements dating back to the 2nd century b.C. in the territory of Casalborgone. In Roman times Casalborgone was called “Trebleto”, that is “place where "trebbia" grows”, a plant of which the roots were used; another name in use was “Trebea”, probably from the French “très beat”, “most blessed”, adjective for the Virgin Mary. Born Roman, the village of Trebea followed the events of Rome up until the fall of the Empire (476 a.D.). The Germans, who had been invading imperial territories since the beginning of the 5th century, established in the area between the Po and the Tanaro (the two major rivers of Piedmont), and founded a group of dwellings called “Casalis Bergoni”, probably after the name of one of the owners. For about a century this belonged to the temporal power of the Church, before it was under the jurisdiction of the Marquis of Monferrato in the 12th century, and then of the counts Radicati of Cocconato.
Between the end of the 13th and the middle of the 14th century, the small villages of the area ended up being abandoned since - maybe because of the Black Plague -, the population moved closer to the Leu in search of the protection of the lord. At that time Casale Bergonis was already a fortified castle.
In the middle of the 14th century the county of Cocconato, to which Casalborgone belonged, went under the jurisdiction of the Paleologis, marquises of Monferrato; therefore, the Radicatis from lords became vassals. In the following century, the Radicatis and the Savoys first concluded agreements that would ease the commerce, and then actual treaties of loyalty. In the same period, though, the family of the Radicati of Cocconato suffered severe internal conflicts, due to their large expansion: they had originated many branches, each of which vassal of a territory and depending from the count of Cocconato. Giovanni Radicati, count of Casalborgone and captain of the Consortium of Cocconato, fearing a forthcoming occupation of the Savoy duchy, took advantage of the state of tension to secure alliances of the whole community of Cocconato with the duke of Savoy and with the duke of Milan. At the beginning of the 16th century, by imperial decree, the counts Radicati were subordinated to the duke of Savoy, who ordered the demolition of the castle of Casalborgone. An uprising of the people of Casalborgone against the count Raynero followed, and he pledged allegiance as vassal to the duke of Savoy in order to confirm the jurisdictional rights and privileges over water, ovens and so on. In 1505, the duke of Savoy invested Giovanni and Alemanno Radicati, the sons of Raynero, with the Consortium of Radicata; only thirteen years later the two brothers sold the feud of Casalborgone to the duke of Savoy himself. Between the 1530s and the end of the century, the propriety of the castle passed from hand to hand; in the last decades of the 16th century the Radicatis owned half of the castle, and the propriety of the other half went to a few different families. In the 1610s Antonio Govean, a Portuguese jurist and professor, bought the feud of Casalborgone only to sell it again about twenty years later. In the meantime, the Radicatis all died during the terrible plague that broke out in 1630.
In 1638 the Madame Royal Christine of France bought the fief of Casalborgone and ceded it to Mario Broglia in exchange of half - or a sixth - of the castle of Agliè; the count Mario was the widower of Catarina San Martino of Agliè, and with her death he had obtained castles, goods, feuds and jurisdiction over that territory.
Ferdinando Morozzo della Rocca
The Broglia family descends from great personalities – archbishops, army captains, counts, marquises and princes -, and carries on its shoulders a secular history of marriages, wars, great glory and wavering fortune.
The lineage finds its origin in Ardizzone, a noble patrician from Chieri, in the 12th century: he came from the countryside and, after moving to Milan, he became vassal of the bishop of the city. The family later split into two main branches, the first of which, that of the Garibaldis, moved to Evian in the Chablis, and the second, that had kept the ancient name Broglia, further split between France and Piedmont; the French branch, still existing today, was named duke and prince of the Holy Roman Empire. The counts of Casalborgone have their roots in the Broglia lineage called “de’ Garibaldenghi”.
Ever since the Madame Royal Christine of France had ceded the castle to Mario Broglia in the 17th century, the propriety passed from parents to children throughout many generations until the decline of this branch of the lineage. Ferdinando Morozzo della Rocca was the last count Broglia of Casalborgone. Born in 1888, he was the only child of the tenant general Costantino Morozzo della Rocca and Clementina Emilia Maria Broglia; he had inherited the title of count with the death of his maternal uncle Mario Carlo Broglia, son of the count Carlo Felice and last male heir of the lineage. Ferdinando participated in both World Wars – and maybe in the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-36) – as official holder of the Bersaglieri and he was prisoner of war twice. In 1919 he married the countess Sofia Bertini di Montaldo, and ten years later Francesca Elsa Crespi, born in Milan and whose family was related to the “Corriere della Sera” (an important Italian magazine). He lived in Casalborgone with his second wife until his death, which occurred in 1969.
Then, the castle was sold to the oil industrialist Conrieri; he restored both the interior and the exterior and had the gardens rearranged. Afterwards, the propriety was abandoned, and the original furniture and decor sold.
The Castle of Casalborgone
There is no certain knowledge on what lay before the 13th century in the grounds where now the castle is, when there was a castrum that belonged to a lord. Also the thirteenth-century castle, that had been built on the rests of an ancient tower of the Radicatis, was demolished in 1269 leaving no trace.
In the 14th century, as a result of incessant wars in Piedmont, the villages of the area where ravaged by British, French and Aragonese hired companies of adventurers. A company in particular caused the most damage in the territory: mustered by the marquis of Monferrato and led by Ribino del Pino, is was a band of eight thousand British soldiers that devastated the countryside and took possession of many castles. They attacked the castle of Ivrea and, as the count Amedeo VI of Savoy returned fire, they subdued him; vengeance wasn’t long in coming: with the help of the Viscontis of Milano, Amedeo VI defeated the British and exterminated them, hanging them to trees and along the streets. After that, the count waged war against the Monferrato, that had mustered the British, defeated it and occupied, among others, also the Castle of Casalborgone, which belonged to the marquisate of Monferrato.
Dating back to the 15th century is the splendid ceiling of the Coats of Arms Room, in the cornice of which stand out the coats of arms of the counts Broglia – light blue cross on a golden field and motto Pour l’avenir (for the future) -, each of which sided by the coat of arms of the family of the wife, to recount the history of marital unions of the lineage.
At the beginning of the 16th century, the castle was dismantled by the order of the duke Filiberto II of Savoy, only to be rebuilt and occupied by the French forces of Francesco I of Valois in 1547.
After the castle became property of the Broglia family, as a gift from Christine of France, the duke Carlo Emanuele II (son of the Madame Royal) paid the damaged of the previous century with a conspicuous amount of money. With those funds, in the middle of the 17th century the estate was rebuilt and expanded by the three brothers Costanzo del Villar San Costanzo, Pietro Luigi Broglia and Tommaso Francesco, abbot of the abbey of Saint Vittore. During the work, the central court was closed, the ballroom (which earlier was an inner courtyard) and the attics were built. A few years later Pier Luigi Broglia commissioned the realization of the parish house at the foot of the walls, of the Garden of Delights and of the road that surrounds the castle, also named Via della Torricella (street of the Torricella). The so-called “Torricella” is of ancient origin: in the 13th century is was part of the defensive structure and, until the end of the 1800s, is was used as an ice deposit, which was collected in winter and used in summer. Mario Domenico Broglia, in the mid-to late 18th century, had the castle splendidly decorated and the walls restored.
In 1706, with the war and the siege of Turin, the castle was damaged although it had been mined, and Giovanni Pierluigi Broglia had agreed with the commanding general that it would be spared. The events of this was caused great loss in the assets of the Broglia family, that obliged Giovanni Pierluigi to dispose of holding in Turin, Casalborgone and San Sebastiano.
Other buildings in the Leu
In the area near the walls of the castle, in piazza Statuto and at the beginning of via Broglia, was once a house that war part of the property of the castle, demolished then in 1939 because it was unstable. Until the Great War it was rented by a family from Casalborgone, that was later evicted to make room for Austro-Hungarian war prisoners. After their liberation, in the house there were often ladies, as guests of the Broglias, who came to spend summer vacation with their children and grandchildren. The empty plot of land belongs now to the municipality of Casalborgone, after the count Ferdinando Morozzo della Rocca ceded it.
The church of Saint Mary Magdalene, that is in piazza Statuto as well, was built in Medieval age as a small chapel of the castle of the counts Radicati. Only by the end of the 15th century did it become the church of the community of Casalborgone; to this day there is still an altar of the Broglia family, the altar of Saint Joseph.

E.S.: Anni fa invitavo spesso (attuale proprietario) in Italia - il proprietario del Castello di Casalborgone - e dicevo, "(proprietario) stai qui in Italia con noi", e lui rispondeva "verrò in Italia solo quando troverò un castello", e così mi sono svegliata una mattina e l'ho trovato. La buona notizia è che questo è un posto veramente unico, totalmente magico, pieno di scoperte.
Io mi sono occupata di tutto il decoro che c'è stato in questi anni, di questa ristrutturazione incredibile, e con il supporto e il contributo immensi di (proprietario) sono stati fatti dei lavori molto velocemente e in maniera direi brillante.
Il Castello parla continuamente ed è un dono grandissimo, è un regalo ed è un contributo per tutte le persone: anche solo se passano a prendersi un caffè, o se passeggiano per il giardino, percepiscono che è davvero qualcosa di molto, molto unico. Dove mi sento di dire che la magia è tangibile, e ogni volta che sei in questo posto ti ricorda dell'eleganza che sei, di quel silenzio, di quella pace, e di quella bellezza che questa realtà è, e quindi per me è un grandissimo dono. E.S.: Years ago I often invited (Owner) to Italy - the owner of the Castle of Casalborgone - and I said, "(Owner), stay here in Italy with us", and he answered, "I'll come to Italy only when I'll find a castle", so I woke up one morning and found him one. Good news is that this is a very unique place, totally magical, full of discoveries.
I took care of all of the decoration that took place during these years, of this incredible restoration, and with (Owner)'s immense support and contribution the work was completed very quickly and, I'd say, in a brilliant way.
The Castle speaks ceaselessly and it's a huge gift, it's a present and a contribution to all people: even if they just come by for a coffee, or if they wander the garden, they can feel that it's something very, very unique. Where, I can say, magic is tangible, and each and every time you're in this place it reminds you of the elegance that you are, of the silence, the peace, and the beauty that this reality is, therefore it's a huge gift to me. I invite you all to explore this possibility in your world, also simply like this, coming by.
The other magical thing is that every single thing communicates with you and everything is designed to contribute to you and to your body, to the magic of this place and, for my part, it empowered me; so many things have changed and I'm very glad that (Owner) was so audacious and brilliant to create a possibility through elegance, beauty and silence in the world. And it's able to inspire people: I noticed that, when people arrive to this place, they undergo a deep change in their lives.
