A way of getting around the depreciation rate problem when comparing the intellectual capital between entities is to use Tobin’s q . This was developed initially by James Tobin as a method of predicting investment behaviour. It uses the value of the replacement costs of an entity’s assets to predict the investment decisions of an entity, independent of interest rates.
The q is the ratio of the market value of the entity (share price _ number of shares) to the
replacement cost of its assets. If the replacement cost of an entity’s assets is lower than its market value, then an entity is getting monopoly rents, or higher-than-normal returns on its investments. A high value of q indicates that the entity will likely purchase more of those assets. Technology and human-capital assets are typically associated with high q values.
As a measure of intellectual capital, Tobin’s q identifies an entity’s ability to get unusually high profits because it has something that no one else has.

Способом обойти проблему начисления амортизации, сравнивая интеллектуальный капитал организаций, является использование коэффициента Тобина. Первоначально он был разработан Джеймсом Тобиным как метод прогнозирования инвестиционного поведения. Коэффициент применяет стоимость замещения активов предприятия для прогнозирования инвестиционных решений организации независимо от процентной ставки.
Данный коэффициент – это соотношение рыночной стоимости предприятия (цена акции _ количество акций) к стоимости замещения его активов. Если стоимость замещения активов предприятия меньше его рыночной стоимости, значит предприятие получает монопольные доходы, если больше, то нормальную выручку на свои вложения. Высокий уровень коэффициента означает, что предприятие, вероятно, купит большую часть тех активов. Технология и человеческий капитал, как правило, связаны с высокими показателями коэффициента.
В качестве критерия интеллектуального капитала коэффициент Тобина определяет возможность организации получить небывало большие доходы, поскольку она обладает тем, чего нет у других.
