Source text - English When she moved into his tiny house in Stroud, and took charge of his four small children, Mother was thirty and still quite handsome. She had not, I suppose, met anyone like him before. This rather priggish young man, with his devout gentility, his airs and manners, his music and ambitions, his charm, bright talk, and undeniable good looks, overwhelmed her as soon as she saw him. So she fell in love with him immediately, and remained in love for ever. And herself being comely, sensitive, and adoring, she attracted my father also. And so he married her. And so later he left her - with his children and some more of her own.
When he'd gone, she brought us to the village and waited. She waited for thirty years. I don't think she ever knew what had made him desert her, though the reasons seemed clear enough. She was too honest, too natural for this frightened man; too remote from his tidy laws. She was, after all, a country girl; disordered, hysterical, loving. She was muddled and mischievous as a chimney-jackdaw, she made her nest of rags and jewels, was happy in the sunlight, squawked loudly at danger, pried and was insatiably curious, forgot when to eat or ate all day, and sang when sunsets were red. She lived by the easy laws of the hedgerow, loved the world, and made no plans, had a quick holy eye for natural wonders and couldn't have kept a neat house for her life. What my father wished for was something quite different, something she could never give him - the protective order of an unimpeachable suburbia, which was what he got in the end.
The three or four years Mother spent with my father she fed on for the rest of her life. Her happiness at that time was something she guarded as though it must ensure his eventual return. She would talk about it almost in awe, not that it had ceased but that it had happened at all.

Source text - English Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. It was only a qualified victory, however. You'd see the winner, exhausted, barely able to wave to the crowd. The triumph was mainly one of survival.
Translation - Russian Зимы в Англии были холодными. Мы, а в особенности мои родители, коротали их перед телевизором, смотрели соревнования по борьбе. Субботними вечерами поединки борцов на черно-белом экране шумно врывались в их жизнь и на короткое время расцвечивали яркими красками ее бесцветное однообразие. Выцвела одежда, в которой они ходили на работу, выцвело покрывало на диване – оно лежало там годами, выцвела и память о том, какими они были до того, как приехали в Англию. Родители, как и всё их поколение, медленно убивали свои лучшие годы, горбатясь на фабриках за гроши. Каторжный труд, изуродованные спины, хронический артрит, искривленные пальцы... Закусив губу, они превозмогали боль – что еще им оставалось? По субботам, усаживаясь перед телевизором с чашкой кардамонового чая с молоком, родители смотрели борьбу. Они ждали развлечения, им хотелось посмеяться, но больше всего они мечтали увидеть, как «наш» победит «чужого», как наглый хвастливый обидчик получит по заслугам – хотя бы раз в жизни. Когда «наш» лежал, прижатый к ковру запрещённым захватом, или с искажённым лицом хватался за почки, они молились, чтобы он не сдался. Давай, парень, еще чуть-чуть, терпи боль, держись до конца... Это борьба: вытерпишь всё – получишь шанс победить.
Но и тогда победа будет всего лишь по очкам, и после поединка измученный победитель едва найдёт в себе силы помахать зрителям. Победить значило выжить.
