Source text - English Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

Ніщо не створює таких нагод полоскотати собі уяву та позловтішатись, як любовні стосунки; саме тому навколо них і закручено стільки сюжетів. Згадайте лиш, як боги товпились на небесних балконах, аби не проґавити наслідків зради Олени Прекрасної! А ваші друзі? Теж стежать! Будьте певні, ваші витівки й походеньки не раз ставали присмакою до пізніх вечірніх розмов.
Десь іще в нетрях давнини, де міфологія поплутана з історією, хитромудрий пройдисвіт Одіссей першим навчився дурити богів. І чи не найдотепніше він учудив, коли прив’язав себе до щогли, перш ніж співи сирен досягли корабля. Певна річ, є й такі, кому велике щастя стояти біля самісіньких поручнів і пильно видивлятись обрії. Якщо ж це не про вас, то виберіть собі добру щоглу та підходящі мотузки – спорт, безвилазну роботу, чернечу самоту з молитовником і дзвоном... Ne « passez jamais » à ce genre d’aveux. Dites-vous bien qu’une partie se joue en 13 (ou en 11) points, et que, avec un peu de chance, vos défauts resteront inaperçus…
- Quelle est la question qu’il ne faut jamais poser ?
- C’est paradoxalement la question que l’on entend le plus fréquemment au cours d’une partie… « Combien, de boules vous reste-t-il ? » Elle est, à mon avis, de celles qui déclassent un joueur et dévaluent une équipe. Car, à tout moment, il faut savoir non seulement le nombre de boules de l’adversaire, mais encore et surtout dans quelles mains elles sont. De la réponse à cette question dépend très souvent la tactique à adopter. Sachant qu’il vaut mieux faire tirer un pointeur et pointer un tireur…
Au sujet de cette fameuse question à ne pas poser, je me souviens d’une anecdote qui date de quelques années… Au cours d’une partie de début de concours, un des joueurs de la formation qui nous était opposée se tourna vers mon frère Jean et lui demanda : « Vous avez combien de boules ? ». Jean lui répondit sans sourciller : « Deux ! »… Après un moment d’hésitation, celui qui avait posé « la question qui ne se pose pas » de revenir à la charge : « Comment deux, il ne vous en reste qu’une… »
Et Jean de répondre sur le ton de la galéjade : « Oui, une ! Mais dans les mains de mon frère, elle en vaut… deux ! »

- Как ни удивительно, но это тот самый вопрос, который мы чаще всего слышим во время игры: "Сколько у вас шаров осталось?" Этот вопрос, на мой взгляд, выдает несостоятельность игрока и дискредитирует команду. Потому что в любую минуту необходимо знать не только количество шаров у соперника, но также, и прежде всего, в чьих руках они находятся. От этого очень часто зависит выбор тактики игры. Когда понимаешь, что бросающему надо уметь прицелиться, а снайперу - лучше бросать...
По поводу этого злополучного вопроса, который нельзя задавать, я вспоминаю эпизод, случившийся несколько лет назад. В ходе отборочной партии в начале соревнований один из игроков команды-соперника обратился к моему брату: "У вас сколько шаров?" Жан ему не моргнув глазом: "Два!" Поколебавшись минуту (нехорошо задавать такие вопросы!), тот снова принялся за свое: "Как два? У вас ведь только один..."
И тогда Жан тоном заправского шутника провозглашает: "Да, один! Но в руках у моего брата он стоит... двух!"
English to Ukrainian: PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
Source text - English The original edition of this book was written shortly after I finished graduate school. At the time, I thought it was puzzling that there were not more political philosophy textbooks written by older colleagues who presumably had many years of lecture notes to work from, and who had much more experience both teaching and researching these topics.
Twelve years later, it seems to me that only an eager postgraduate, overly confident of his new-found knowledge and convictions, would even have the idea of writing such an ambitious book. I actually had two ambitions for the book. The first was to provide a reasonably comprehensive overview of the most important theories in contemporary Anglo-American political philosophy. The second was to show the interconnections between the various theories. I wanted to show that each theory could be seen as addressing some common questions, and as responding to the weaknesses or limitations in the way previous theories answered them, so that we could see progress over time as the field developed.
Both of these now seem somewhat overambitious. The first task, of providing a comprehensive overview, was probably unrealistic at the time, but has become even more difficult in the last decade, due to the explosion of writing in the field. One indication of this is the exponential growth in journals devoted to the field. When John Rawls wrote Theory of Justice in 1971, which I take as ground zero for our debates, there was only one journal (Ethics) devoted to the field of political philosophy, and it was more or less moribund.

Спливло дванадцять років, і я починаю розуміти, що лише палкому випускникові, сповненому свіжих знань і переконань, могла зайти в голову амбітна думка взятися за таку непросту справу. Власне, амбітних думок було дві: по-перше, зробити більш-менш ґрунтовний огляд найважливіших напрямків сучасної англо-американської політичної думки; по-друге, розкрити взаємозв’язки між різними напрямками. Я хотів показати, що кожну теорію можна розглядати як звертання до певних загальних проблем, а далі – як подолання слабкості й обмеженості попередніх теорій у цих проблемах. Таким чином, мав би стати очевидним поступ у політичній філософії.
Обидва ті заміри тепер видаються трохи зухвалими. Зробити ґрунтовний огляд було, мабуть, нереально вже тоді, та стало ще важче за останнє десятиріччя, зважаючи на бібліографічний вибух у цій галузі. Одним із показників вибуху є лавинне зростання спеціальної періодики. Source text - French Dans cet ouvrage, nous ne parlons pas de la jeunesse qui correspond au temps entre l'enfance et la maturite, mais plutot de l'ensemble des caracteres propres a la jeunesse qui peuvent demeurer presents jusque dans la vieillesse. Quand on dit de quelqu'un: "Je suis etonne de voir combien cette personne demeure jeune, elle semble meme rajeunir plutot que de vieillir", on ne parle pas necessairement de l'age ou du corps physique de cette personne, mais plutot de ce qui degage d'elle. Peu importe son age, on sent qu'elle possede le dinamisme, l'energie et la joie de vivre d'une jeune personne. Neanmoins, demontrer ces caracteristiques typiques de la jeunesse ne signifie pas de s'habiller comme eux, ni de tenir des propos et leur language particulier, ni de faire les memes activites qu'eux car de telles attitudes denotent plutot une facade pour ceux qui refusent de vieillir. De plus, sachant que les gouts changent, nous ne sommes donc pas tenus de faire les memes choses qu'a l'age de 20 ans.

Когда так говорят о человеке, то обычно имеют в виду не его возраст и даже не физическое тело, а производимое им впечатление юношеского динамизма, энергии, радости жизни, и не так уж важно, сколько ему календарных лет. Однако с этой молодостью не следует путать стремление некоторых взрослых людей одеваться по молодежной моде, разговаривать на молодежном жаргоне и заниматься тем же, чем занимается молодежь; такое поведение может послужить лишь фасадом для тех, кто отказывается стариться. A new architecture improves power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) and provides very fast turn-on times. Designed to improve overall system performance, the was created for demanding applications in mobile phones and other portable communication devices. It is capable of delivering 1W of continuous average power to an 8 Ohm bridge-tied load (BTL) with less than 1% total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) from a 5V DC power supply. The LM4906 has an internal selectable gain of either 6dB or 12dB. It does not require output coupling capacitors or bootstrap capacitors. It contains advanced pop and click circuitry that eliminates noise which would otherwise occur during turn-on and turn-off transitions. Additionally, the features a low power consumption shutdown mode (the part is enabled by pulling the shutdown pin high) and an internal thermal shutdown protection mechanism.

Source text - Russian Лучшим и самым безопасным методом лечения расширенных сосудов кожи сегодня является обработка кожи специальным сосудистым лазером на красителе Sclero Plus. В отличие от других, лазер избирательно воздействует на сосуды, не "видя" и не повреждая при этом нормальную кожу. В результате на месте воздействия лазерного импульса образуется синячок, сосуды склеиваются, прекращают функционировать и становятся чужеродным телом для кожи, а со временем рассасываются. Процедура практически безболезненна, а какие-либо ощущения сводятся к минимуму специальной системой местного охлаждения. Манипуляция длится всего несколько секунд, синячок держится на коже 3-5 дней, а вот процесс рассасывания сосудов - 6-8 недель. Если сосуды крупные или расположены в несколько слоев - процедуру необходимо повторить через месяц. После окончания лечения даже при очень внимательном рассмотрении на месте обработки нельзя увидеть никаких следов.
Translation - English Processing the skin with a special vascular pulsed dye laser ScleroPlus is the best and most safe modern method for treatment of dilated skin vessels. In contrast to others, ScleroPlus acts upon the vessels in selective way, not “seeing” and not damaging normal skin structures. The laser impulse leaves but a minor bruise: the vessels stick together and cease their function; they become foreign bodies and dissolve with time. The procedure is, in fact, painless; a special system of local cooling brings to a minimum any possible sensation. The whole manipulation takes several seconds; the skin bruise lasts 3 to 5 days; and as to the vessel dissolution process, it requires 6 to 8 weeks. After the treatment course is accomplished, there are no visible traces at the processed area.
