Portuguese to English: extract from a petition to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
Source text - Portuguese O acusado Delsão foi ouvido em 25 de janeiro de 2001, negando qualquer envolvimento no crime. Destaca-se que Delsão negou, inicialmente, nesse depoimento, que Dezinho, o STR ou a FETAGRI tivessem feito qualquer denúncia a respeito de práticas ilegais nas suas propiedades. Posteriormente, reconheceu que tais denúncias haviam sido feitas e constavam em termo de qualificação por ele assinado anteriormente, quando declarou que Dezinho havia denunciado trabalho escravo, maus-tratos contra trabalhadores rurais, além da existência de cemitérios clandestinos e a extração ilegal de madeira nas suas propiedades .
Em 20 de abril de 2001, o Tribunal de Justiça do Estado do Pará, através do desembargador Otávio Marcelino Maciel – mesmo desembargador que concedeu liminarmente habeas corpus para Delsão - acatou outro pedido deste acusado e determinou a suspensão da instrução probatória até que as fitas de vídeo e fitas cassete apreendidas pela polícia fossem trazidas aos autos do processo, com laudo técnico do Instituto Médico Legal (IML), em virtude da alegação de suposto cerceamento de defesa, pelo fato dos acusados não terem tido acesso às aludidas fitas magnéticas.
Em virtude dessa decisão do Tribunal de Justiça do Pará, o processo criminal que apurava a morte de Dezinho ficou completamente paralisado por quase três anos.
Em 26 de abril de 2001, a juíza de direito da comarca de Rondon do Pará requisitou o laudo de transcrição das cinco fitas, que havia sido encaminhadas ao diretor do Instituto Médico Legal (“IML”) de Marabá em 1 de dezembro de 2000.
Translation - English Delsão, the accused, was heard on the 25th January 2001 denying any involvement in the crime. It is notable that in this statement Delsão initially denied that Dezinho, the STR (Rural Workers Union) or FETAGRI (Pará State Federation of Agricultural Workers) had made any accusations concerning illegal practices on his properties. He later acknowledged that such accusations had been made and that they were set out in a statement previously signed by him, when he stated that Dezinho had denounced the use of slave labor, and the mistreatment of rural workers as well as the existence of clandestine cemeteries and the illegal extraction of wood on his properties.
On the 20th April 2001, the Pará State Tribunal, in the person of chief judge Otávio Marcelino Maciel – the same judge who initially granted a writ of habeas corpus to Delsão – acceded to another of the accused’s requests and ordered the suspension of preliminary proceedings until such time as the video and audio cassettes seized by the police were brought to the proceedings, accompanied by a technical report from the Medico-Legal Institute (IML), in view of the allegation of supposed prejudice to the defense, by virtue of the fact that the accused had not had access to said magnetic tapes.
As a result of this decision by the Pará State Tribunal, criminal proceedings relating to Dezinho’s death were completely paralyzed for a period of almost three years.
On 26th April 2001, the District Judge for Rondon do Pará ordered the presentation of the report and transcript of the five tapes that had been sent to the director of the Marabá Medico-Legal Institute (“IML”) on 1st December 2000.

In the last few years I have spent six months working in Mexico City, six months studying history and philosophy at the University of Cadiz, Spain and three months working for Flammarion publishers in Paris, France. This time spent abroad has served to increase both my fluency in Spanish and French and my knowledge of Hispanic and French culture and literature.
My degree focused on both translation and literary/cultural/political studies. During my degree developed a particular interest in Latin-American politics, society and literature, and in Hispanic cinema.
