Source text - English There are hundreds of stories in Turkey about the jester Nasreddin (also a kind of folkoric fool), including one showing intercession. When Tamerlane was doling out horrific punishments, Nasreddin is said to have talked him out of the extreme sentences, 800 lashes to this man, 1200 to that and 1500 to another. Drawing the king in through an apparently innocent and irrelevant question, he confronted him with his own cruelty:
Nasreddin Hodja interrupted the King by asking: ‘Oh King, do you know everything?’ ‘Of course I do!’ he snapped back. ‘Then how could you inflict such a punishment? Either you don’t know the meaning of the number 1500 or you don’t know the sting of a whip!’
Translation - Portuguese Existem centenas de histórias na Turquia sobre o bobo da corte Nasreddin (também um bobo da corte folclórico), incluindo uma que mostra intercessão. Quando Tamerlane estava distribuindo punições horríveis, conta-se que Nasreddin o convenceu a não aplicar sentenças extremas, 800 chicotadas neste homem, 1200 neste outro e 1500 naquele outro. Envolvendo o rei com uma pergunta aparentemente inocente e irrelevante, ele o confrontou com sua própria crueldade:
