English to Portuguese: Frieze from a sarcophagus lid
Source text - English Frieze from a sarcophagus lid
Origin: Chelas Convent. Lisbon
Century: 3rd d.C
Marble
National Museum of Archeology Collection, Lisbon/IMC
“Front view of a sarcophagus lid in relief, with theatrical masks at the lid’s ends. In the center, there is an epigraphic chart. On the left and on the right, there are two framed, figurative groups, composed of four muses and four idols. 2/3 of their heads are visible. Their lower limbs are cut; their feet have been chopped off”. L.J Gonçalves
On the beholder’s left panel stand the Comedy and Tragedy muses, each one in front of sitting men.
On the right panel, there are two groups, each one with an old man sitting down and a muse standing up, maybe Calíope. She rests her right elbow on the lyre and her left hand on a long plectrum, the figure’s symbolic instruments. She rests on her left foot with her right leg crossed over the left one.
Clio is wrapped up in the "himation" or mantle, her right hand touches the chin and her forearm rests against a column. The man in front of Clio is sitting down, dressed in a mantle fastened over the left shoulder and falling over the legs. He talks to the Muse, raising his right arm while the left one holds a volumen. Next to the three long-haired men, rests the capsule of rolls.
The Muses and the wise men at the Parnaso; the Muses and authors of the Tragedy, Comedy, Eloquence and Lyrical Poetry or Muses and Arts, can be used as titles for the themes treated on the sarcophagus lid’s platband, in which a departed friend of arts rests.
It is characterized by icons, on the transition from the High and the Low Empire, where the theme ‘Intellectual Conversation’ will be brought back by the Christianity. Certainly imported from Rome, it was produced to be part of a family mausoleum at a villa of civitas de Olisipo.
