Μια πιο σύνθετη, πάντως όχι συνολικά διαφορετική, εικόνα μπορεί να προκύψει αν υπολογίσουμε τους δείκτες για επιμέρους ομάδες μεταναστών και χρησιμοποιήσουμε ως μονάδα ανάλυσης τον απογραφικό τομέα της ΕΣΥΕ και όχι το δήμο. Επίσης, μια άλλη διάσταση του διαχωρισμού θα μπορούσε να αναδειχθεί αν στην ανάλυση περιλαμβάναμε και περαστικούς δήμους ή κοινότητες της Ανατολικής και Δυτικής Αττικής, όπου συγκεντρώνεται σημαντικός αριθμός μεταναστών που απασχολούνται σε αγροτικές δραστηριότητες (Μωϋσίδης και Ζιώγα 1996).
Για να αναδείξουμε τις αμφίδρομες διαδικασίες που οδηγούν στο διαχωρισμό, μπορούμε να υπολογίσουμε δείκτες έκθεσης σε διπλή κατεύθυνση, δηλαδή δείκτες απομόνωσης της πλειοψηφίας από τις επιμέρους ομάδες αλλοδαπών και αλληλεπίδρασής της με αυτές. Δεδομένου ότι οι δείκτες διαχωρισμού είναι χαμηλοί για την Αθήνα, οι δείκτες «έκθεσης» των Ελλήνων αποδίδουν καλύτερα τις μεταβαλλόμενες συθήκες. A more complex, although not entirely different, view could be gathered if we calculate the indices for specific immigrant groups, and if the analysis unit we use is the National Statistical Service of Greece’s (NSSG) census area rather than the municipality. In addition, we could distinguish a further dimension of segregation if we also include the transient boroughs or communities in East and West Attica in the analysis, as they are home to significant numbers of immigrants, employed in agricultural work (Moisidis and Zioga 1996).
In order to show the two-way procedures which lead to segregation, the exposure indices can be calculated for a second set; that is, the indices expressing the majority group’s isolation from, and interaction with, the aforementioned groups of foreign nationals. Given that the segregation indices for Athens are low, the “exposure” indices for Greeks can better convey the changing conditions. Replacing F with G and G with F wherever they appear in formulae (3) and (4) gives:

Due to the asymmetrical distribution of Greeks and foreign nationals, it can be seen that the interaction of the Greek population with foreign nationals (8.8%) is lower than both the interaction of foreign nationals with Greeks (87.2%) and the isolation of foreign nationals (12.8%). However, the Greek population’s isolation from foreign nationals (91.2%) is higher than both the interaction of foreign nationals with Greeks and the isolation of foreign nationals (87.2%) (sic).
