I have been working as a Korean-English translator since 1978 after graduating from Ulsan Institute of Technology, Ulsan, Korea, with a degree of B. E. in materials engineering in 1976. Most of the translations that I have done until now are technical documents, especially patent specifications. I have translated About 110 thousand pages of patent specifications (about 300 words / page) into Korean or English, and worked as an interpreter and correspondent for patent attorneys. The patent specifications that I have translated relate to inventions covering almost all technical fields especially including electronics and communications.
For the other subjects, I also translated several legal documents including the Bill for Information and Communications System of the U. S. A., whose translation project was ordered by the Korean National Computerization Agency in the spring of 1993, and an English software manual entitled “Flight Simulator Adventure Guide by Timothy Trimble & Ed McDonald” in 1994, and into English a discourse on Internet auction authored by researchers of KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) while I was working as the director of International Department of Markpro Co. I also translated into Korean several video documentaries ordered by the SDI Media Group, which include “Untamed Amazonia: Triumph of the Water House”, “Dwarf: Standing Tall House”, “Amazing Worlds Episode 6”, and “What’s Up With the Weather Part 1”.
For your reference, I hold the view that to translate is not to simply substitute word for word, but to properly reconstruct the full meaning of the original text by using the building blocks of the target language. I think this should be seriously considered especially in translating between two languages having fundamentally and completely different syntax like English-Korean or English-Japanese pair. Therefore it would never be overemphasized that good translation depends on the capabilities of a translator to grasp the subject of a text to be translated and to correctly re-create it by utilizing a target language.
My translation specialties include almost all fields of knowledge. My translation throughput is about 3000 to 4000 words per day. I am sure that my 40 years of practicing Korean-English bilingual translation will guarantee my translation of your valuable works.
