English to Dutch: part of a book on the history of cartography (2-'08)
Source text - English The career of one of the most influential of all 16th century cartographers, Gerardus Mercator, exemplifies well the threats faced by the scientists of the period. Born near Antwerp in 1512, Mercator was the inventor of the project which still bears his name and for the first use of the word “atlas” in connection with a collection of maps. Studying in Louvrain, he produced a map of Palestine in 1537, a four-sheep map of Flanders (1538), a world map (1538) and a terrestrial globe three years later. However, he was accused, but cleared, of heresy in 1544, whereupon he fled to Duisburg in Germany in 1552 where he felt less threatened by charges of heresy and where he was able to correspond in more safety with like-minded cartographers, such as Abraham Ortrelius. The fruits of his work were to come towards the end of his life with the 18-sheet world map of 1569 and, in 1585 and 1590, the first two parts of his Atlas. Mercator died in 1594.
By the start of the 16th century, the skills required to produce detailed scale maps were in place. Many of the earliest drawn were produced by the military - for either offensive or defensive reasons. Many of the scale maps produced still retain elements of the older tradition of pictorial representation. To cartographers in the Renaissance, the pictorial representation of buildings and other facilities helps to codify. The pictorial representations that are visible in many of the maps included in this selection have three effective roles: to decorate; to provide a useful symbol (for a church or house for example); and, to form a foundation for other information.
Until the development of printing, each map was an individual work of art. Produced on paper or vellum- a long-lasting paper-like material produced from fine calfskin- maps were unique; handmade copies could be produced but this was time-consuming and prone to error. Vellum, given the nature of its production, was costly and thus a limiting factor in the dissemination of information. Ideal for state documents, it was less practical for the production for large numbers of maps. It was the development of paper that was to prove critical here. Paper was first developed in China in the 9th century and reached Europe gradually: Spain in the 10th century, France in the 12th, Germany in the 14th and the British Isles in the 15th. But with the invention of printing in the 15th century - attributed to the German Johannes Gutenberg (1400-1468) - the means of greater production was provided. The primary problem was to find a means of transferring the map into a form that could be reproduced.

Er konden wel handgemaakte kopieën worden gemaakt, maar dit was tijdrovend werk, met kans op fouten. Perkament was gezien de productiemethode kostbaar, wat de verspreiding van informatie beperkte. Dit materiaal was ideaal voor staatsdocumenten, maar minder praktisch voor het maken van grote aantallen kaarten. De ontwikkeling van papier zou hiervoor van grote betekenis zijn. Papier werd voor het eest in China geproduceerd in de 9e eeuw en bereikte geleidelijk Europa: Spanje in de 10e eeuw, Frankrijk in de 12e, Duitsland in de 14e eeuw en de Britse eilanden in de 15e eeuw. Maar met de uitvinding van boekdrukkunst – die wordt toegeschreven aan de Duitser Johannes Gutenberg (1400 – 1468) – werd een middel tot grotere verspreiding verschaft. Het belangrijkste probleem daarbij was het vinden van een manier om de kaart om te zetten in een reproduceerbare vorm.
