당뇨약 '아반디아' 부작용 논란

앵커： 국내에서도 많이 쓰이는 당뇨병 치료약， 아반디아가 심장병 위험을높인다는 연구 결과가 나와 논란이 일고 있습니다.
신재원 의학전문 기자가 보도합다.
기자： 다국적 제약회사 ＧＳＫ가 ８년 전 개발한 당뇨병 치료제 아반디아입니다.
기존 약보다 효과가 뛰어나 전세계적으로 ３０억달러어치가 팔리고 있고 우리나라에서도 점유율 １위를 차지하고 있습니다.
그런데 이 약을 먹는 환자들은 급성심근경색 발병 위험이 ４３％ 높아진다고 미국 클리블랜드 병원 연구팀이 발표했습니다.
인터뷰： 추가 사망자는 엄청나게 많은 숫자일 것입니다.
이 약에 대한 심각성에 대해 정확히 따져볼 필요가 있습니다.
기자： 그동안 아반디아의 부작용으로 알려진 것은 간기능이 떨어지거나 심장이나 폐에 물이 찰 수 있다는 것이었습니다.
하지만 급성심근경색의 발병 위험을 높인다는 연구 결과는 이번이 처음입니다.
그러나 ＧＳＫ측은 이번 연구가 단기간 관찰한 자료들 분석한 것이라며 위험하다는 주장에 동의할 수 없다고 반박하고 있습니다.
국내 당뇨 전문의들은 신중해야 한다는 입장입니다.
인터뷰： 현재 약제를 쓰고 있는 환자분들께서는 이 약이 갑자기 내가 심근경색증을 나한테 일으키지 않을까 하는 걱정을 할 필요는 없을 것 같고 대신에 심장질환에 대한 기초검사를 충분히， 주기적으로 받음으로써...
기자： 아반디아에 대한 대규모 임상시험 결과는 ２００９년에나 나올 전망이어서 위험 논란은 당분간 계속될 것으로 보입니다.

당뇨병 치료제 ‘아반디아’ 심장 발작 위험 높여
당뇨병 치료제로 널리 쓰이는 아반디아가 심장발작 위험을 크게 증가시킨다는 경고가 나와 파장이 일고 있습니다.
기현정 기자의 보도입니다.
전 세계적으로 6백만 명이 복용하고 있는 당뇨병 치료제 아반디아입니다.
영국계 회사인 GSK가 8년 전부터 시판하고 있으며 국내에서도 지난 한 해 동안 4백억 원 상당이 팔렸습니다.
그런데 아반디아가 심장질환을 오히려 가중시키고 심할 경우 사망에 이르게 할 수 있다는 연구결과가 나왔습니다.
미국 클리블랜드 클리닉의 스티븐 니슨 박사 연구진은 당뇨병 환자 2만 8천 명을 대상으로 한 42개의 임상연구를 분석한 결과 아반디아를 복용한 사람의 심장발작 위험이 비 복용자보다 43% 높아지는 것으로 나타났다고, 미 의학전문지 뉴잉글랜드 저널 오브 메디신을 통해 발표했습니다.
또 다른 약을 복용하거나 아무 약도 먹지 않는 사람에 비해 심장병으로 인한 사망 위험은 64% 높아지는 것으로 나타났다고 밝혔습니다.
스티븐 니슨(클리블랜드 클리닉): "이 연구 결과가 지지를 받는다면, (저는 그것이 지지를 받을 것이라고 믿어요) 이는 공공 건강상의 엄청난 우려를 야기시키는 것입니다."
이와 관련해 FDA는 아반디아의 안전성을 재검토하기로 하고 약을 복용중인 당뇨병 환자에게 의사와 상담할 것을 권했습니다.
로버트 메이어(美 식품의약국): "우리는 안전을 위해서 예방 조치를 강구하길 원합니다. 그러나 당뇨병 환자 수백만 명이 불필요하게 치료를 중단하게 해서는 안됩니다."
이에 대해 제조사 GSK는 이번 분석이 과학적으로 입증되지 않았다며 아반디아를 복용해서 얻는 이로움이 위험성에 비해 더욱 클 것이라는 것을 믿는다는 내용의 성명서를 냈습니다.

Reporter: Diabetes medication Avandia has developed by the multinational pharmaceutical company GSK 8 years ago.
This medication has been sold around the world with estimating earnings worth of 30 billion dollars due to its great effect compared to the existing diabetes medications, and even in Korea this medication has been taking up highest occupancy rate in the market.
However there has been announcement from Cleveland clinic in America, the patients who have been taking this medication showed about 4.3 % higher chance of encountering acute myocardial infarction.
Interview: I suspect more deaths from this medication. We need to really question the serious side effect from this medication now.
Reporter: The side effects from this medication have been known to drop the function in liver or fill up the heart and lungs with water.
This is the first study result about higher chance of encountering acute myocardial infarction. Nevertheless the GSK Company is rebutting the announcement, saying since the data from this study has been observed in very short period, they can not agree with the risks of medication.
Local diabetes specialists say that we need to be careful for using this medication.
Interview: For the patients who have already been taking this medication don’t need to worry about getting myocardial infarction, instead you need to get a basic check up on heart disease regularly…..
Reporter: Since the clinical trial for Avandia is planning to come out 2009, the controversy over the medication will be continuing.

Avandia, widely used drug for diabetes, increased the risk of heart attack causing big controversy.

There are over 600 million people using Avandia all over the world.
British company GSK has been marketing Avandia for 8 years, and it has sold 4 hundred million dollars worth in the last year.
However the study about Avandia raising heart attack risks, and even causing death has been just come out.
In the medical journal, New England journal of medicine, Steven Nissen, M.D. in Cleveland clinic had mentioned in an analysis of 42 trials, he found that use of the drug rosiglitazone (Avandia(TM)) raises patients' risk of heart attack death by 43%, respectively, in comparison to the patients who haven’t use this medication.
Moreover, in comparison to the patients using no drugs or other drugs, Avandia raises patients’ risk of heart attack by 65%.
(Interview) Steven Nisson (Cleveland clinic): “If this study gets supported (which I believe it will), the results of this analysis raise serious concern about the public health.”
The FDA has started review on Avandia based on this study, and has recommended that all patients should consult with doctors before the use of this medication.
(Interview) Robert Mayor (U.S. FDA): “We are demanding precautionary measures for safety. However the hundred million diabetes patients shouldn’t have to stop the treatment unnecessary.”
GSK made announcement about all these side effects, saying this study hasn’t even been proved scientifically, and the benefits from the medication would be a lot bigger than risks.
