Quoting from the JAVMA website [11]: “Equine influenza (EI) is caused by a type A Orthomyxovirus. The viruses are 80 to 120 nanometers (nm) in diameter, and consist of a core of eight separate segments of single-strand ribonucleic acid (RNA) surrounded by a spiked arrangement of glycoproteins. These viruses are classified based on the relative numbers of hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N) glycoproteins in the lipid outer layer. Strains (or subtypes) of influenza viruses are formally described according to their type (A, B, or C), host species, location of first
isolation (city or country), strain number (if any), year of first isolation, and
antigenic subtype (H and N designation); shorthand methods of identification are limited to the H/N description. The two major strains known to cause disease in equids are H7N7 (prototype strain: A/eq/Prague/56[H7N7], type A influenza, equine, first isolated in Czechoslovakia in 1956) and H3N8 (prototype strain: A/eq/Miami/2/63[H3N8], type A influenza, equine, first isolated in Miami, strain 2, isolated in 1963). 3 PASSIVE STRATEGIES
3.1 GENERAL BUILDING SHAPE/TYPOLOGY
3.1.1 Description
General building shape, or typology, is defined by all the external walls that separate indoor spaces from outdoor. In single dwellings, we can distinguish, in a qualitative form, between detached, semi-detached and terraced houses. The difference is the way of joining the different residential units in each case; thus, detached houses does not have any party walls, semi-detached houses only have one party-wall and finally, terraced houses are joined making a row, so each house has two or more party walls. Quantitatively we can distinguish between the different typologies using a parameter called “compactness” – or characteristic length. Compactness is the ratio between the total treated volume of the dwelling and the heat loss surface area. Typically, for dwellings with the same total treated volume, this parameter takes low values for detached houses, low-medium for semi-detached houses and, medium-high in terraced houses. Minimum compactness values are around 0.8m and maximum around 2.2m.
3.1.2 Relevance in Passivhaus design
A dwelling with a correct shape, in terms of energy efficiency, will be a house with a high compactness. For winter, a high compactness is functional due to the fact that exposed surface area is low and so the heat losses are. Moreover, we can take advantage to design a dwelling with medium-high compactness in summertime, because the cooling demand will be reduced. A high compactness could be sacrificed sometimes in order to have a higher surface oriented to the south, in this situation an intermediate solution can be adopted with medium compactness.
3.1.3 Reference to the regional solutions/Climatic applicability
In general, it is desirable to design buildings with high compactness. The more compactness, the lower heating demand. In Mediterranean climates, it is convenient to sacrifice higher compactness in order to increase south oriented glazing area – see Spanish Passivhaus description.

3.1.1 Descrizione
La forma o la tipologia generale degli edifici viene definita da tutte le pareti esterne che separano gli spazi chiusi da quelli aperti. Nelle singole abitazioni possiamo distinguere, dal punto di vista qualitativo, tra case singole, abbinate e a schiera. La differenza sta nel modo in cui vengono collegate le diverse unità residenziali in ciascun caso; pertanto, le case singole non dispongono di pareti divisorie, le case abbinate dispongono soltanto di una parete divisoria e le case a schiera dispongono di due o più pareti divisorie. Quantitativamente, è possibile distinguere tra le varie tipologie utilizzando un parametro denominato “compattezza”, o lunghezza caratteristica. La compattezza è il rapporto tra il volume trattato totale dell’abitazione e la superficie di dispersione termica. Tipicamente, per abitazioni aventi lo stesso volume trattato totale, questo parametro assume valori bassi per case singole, medio-basso per case abbinate e medio-alto per case a schiera. I valori di compattezza minimi si aggirano attorno agli 0,8 m, i massimi attorno ai 2,2 m.
3.1.2 Rilevanza nella progettazione della Passivhaus
Un’abitazione di forma corretta, in termini di efficienza energetica, sarà una casa con un elevato livello di compattezza. Durante l’inverno, la compattezza elevata è utile per il fatto che la superficie esposta è ridotta ed è ridotta anche la dispersione termica. Possiamo inoltre sfruttarla per progettare un’abitazione che abbia una compattezza medio-alta in estate, in modo da ridurre la necessità di raffrescamento. A volte è necessario rinunciare a un’elevata compattezza per poter avere una maggiore superficie orientata verso sud, in questa situazione è possibile adottare una soluzione intermedia con compattezza media.
3.1.3 Riferimento alle soluzioni regionali/Applicabilità climatica
In genere è consigliabile progettare edifici a compattezza elevata. Maggiore è la compattezza, minore è il fabbisogno di riscaldamento. Nei climi mediterranei conviene sacrificare la compattezza elevata per aumentare l’area dedicata a vetrate rivolte verso sud – consultare la descrizione della Passivhaus spagnola.
