As a recent language graduate, I feel prepared and enthusiastic to help execute translation projects. I have a Bachelor's degree in Translation Studies and English from the University of Oslo, Norway and have also studied Journalism and Communication at Middlesex University, London. Having trained as a translator, I have been subjected to the various guidelines that follow the production of a translation. My academic education viewed translation as an act of communication and not just a linguistic transaction. We dealt with simulations of real-life projects where we alternated between working alone and in groups, meeting deadlines and dealing with different projects in different modules at the same time. I was made aware of the importance of clients’ wishes for the development of a translation, and the importance of adapting style and content according to audience and medium. As proof-reading and editing are integral parts of the work of a translator, I have also studied copy editing and worked with written Norwegian in a contrastive perspective. Because I have used English at an academic level for six years, I feel I have an excellent command of the English language. During the course of my education, I have used language in a variety of ways: I have analyzed the work of others (English studies), learned writing techniques and communication skills (Communication studies) and written new texts based on source material (Translation studies). I have some experience as a journalist and proof reader of English texts for two student periodicals which strengthened my editorial sense. I am a serious, meticulous and reliable freelance translator who is greatly interested in the challenges that follow when texts of one culture become new texts in another. My overall objective is to translate so that the source information is rendered as understandable and correct in the target language, as well as making the texts a pleasant read. |
