Source text - Dutch De regelmatige toepassing van gecombineerde of hybride technieken in composities van de afgelopen decennia is niet los te denken van een wezenlijke verschuiving in tijdgeest, filosofie en esthetica. Niet alleen vanuit een modernistisch concept maar vooral ook in benaderingen die over het algemeen omschreven worden als postmodernistisch, of metamodernistisch worden muzikale standaardbegrippen als tonaliteit en a-tonaliteit niet meer benaderd als elkaar uitsluitende verschijnselen maar kunnen ze tevens optreden als polariteiten binnen één werk.
Op compositorisch technisch niveau impliceert dit een enorme uitdaging, daar dit over het algemeen een anachronistische confrontatie of vermenging van oud en nieuw materiaal met zich mee brengt. Binnen deze eclectische benadering moeten namelijk legitieme vormen gevonden worden om nieuwe muzikale interactie te verwezenlijken. Het onderzoekstraject richt zich op het specifieke deelgebied van de toonhoogtestructuur, en daarbinnen met nadruk op verschillende toepassingen van complementaire technieken. De intentie is om te onderzoeken in een actieve verbindende vorm van research (muziektheoretische analyse) en compositie.
Onderstaand project wil dan ook niet alleen benoemen wat er op dit gebied al toegepast is maar wil daarenboven tot een codificatie komen van een aantal regelmatigheden en stereotypen in dit handwerk en deze inbedden in een overzichtelijke 'overall' structuur.
Translation - English The frequent application of combined or hybrid techniques in compositions of the last few decades cannot be dissociated from a substantial shift in the spirit of the times, in philosophy and aesthetics. From a modernist concept, but also in approaches generally described as postmodernist or metamodernist, standard musical concepts such as tonality and atonality are not addressed as mutually exclusive phenomena, but as concepts that can also appear as polarities within one piece.
At the technical compositional level, this implies a tremendous challenge, since this generally entails an anachronistic confrontation or fusion of old and new material. That is to say, within this eclectic approach, legitimate forms have to be found to achieve new musical interaction. The research is focused specifically on the field of pitch structure, with the emphasis on various applications of complementary techniques.
The intention is to study in an active, connecting form of research (music theoretic analysis) and composition. This means the project described below is not aimed solely at describing what has been applied in this field so far, but also at codifying a number of regularities and stereotypes in these crafted works and embedding these in a clear overall structure.

Reception
A one-nighter may only see one member of staff – you! You may have five minutes to make or break his stay here. Make him feel welcome, that we are here to help but not to intrude. Be efficient but friendly, informative and reassuring. A smile is essential; a few words in his mother tongue are a bonus.
Wash blocks
Cleanliness of the sanitaires is vital. It’s the one place they all go, to perform their intimate body functions. They don’t want to be reminded that there may have been 100 other people in their before them. If you’re using the wash blocks yourself and you notice scraps of toilet paper on the floor, or an empty shampoo bottle hanging about …please take a few minutes to clean it up. For major muck, tell us and we’ll try and sort it out as soon as possible. The wash blocks can’t be too clean!

Geef hem het gevoel dat hij welkom is en dat we er zijn om te helpen, niet om hem lastig te vallen. Wees efficiënt maar vriendelijk, verstrek informatie en stel hem gerust. Een glimlach is onontbeerlijk, een paar woorden in zijn moedertaal zijn een bonus.
Toiletblokken
Het is uitermate belangrijk dat het sanitair schoon is. Het is de enige plek waar alle gasten komen, en ze geven zich hier letterlijk bloot. Ze willen er niet aan herinnerd worden dat er misschien wel 100 anderen voor hun zijn geweest. Als je zelf de sanitaire voorzieningen gebruikt en je ziet stukjes toiletpapier op de grond liggen, of een lege shampoofles rondslingeren… neem dan alsjeblieft even de tijd om het op te ruimen. Als het echt een zooi is, waarschuw ons, dan zorgen wij dat het zo snel mogelijk in orde komt. Het sanitair kan niet schoon genoeg zijn!

a. De strijkinstrumenten
De toon ontstaat dus door het aanstrijken der snaren. De toonhoogte wordt veranderd door met de vingers van de linkerhand de snaren vast te drukken op de toets en ze zo te verkorten. De snaar bestaat uit een geprepareerde dieren (schapen-)darm, metaal (staal, aluminium) of zijde. Zij wordt gestemd op een vaste toonhoogte. Door het heen- en weerstrijken wordt een voortdurende, gelijkmatige toon verkregen. Dit “wisselen van de strijkstok” hoeft op de continuïteit van de klank niet noemenswaard van invloed te zijn.
Het is mogelijk door het hanteren van de strijkstok modificaties van de klank te krijgen, zowel wat betreft klanksterkte als klankduur. Legato en staccato zijn in allerlei vormen uitvoerbaar.
De snaar kan worden afgedempt door het plaatsen van een demper (sordino) op of tegen de kam. Vaak bevindt zich tegenwoordig deze sordino achter de kam en kan met een enkele beweging tegen de kam worden aangedrukt.
Tot de middelen om de normale klank van de strijkinstrumenten te wijzigen behoren ook:
• Flageoletten: deze ontstaan door de vinger van de linkerhand losjes op bepaalde plaatsen van de snaar te laten rusten (dus NIET de snaar op de toets aandrukken). Het trillend gedeelte van de snaar wordt nu in twee, drie of vier gedeeld, afhankelijk van de plaats waar men de snaar raakt, en het resultaat is een boventoon van de grondtoon. De klank ervan is dunner en ijler dan de gewone.
• Vibrato: een beving van de linkerhand maakt bij goede uitvoering en smaakvolle toepassing de toon warmer en voller.
• Pizzicato: tokkelen met de vingers in plaats van strijken. Dit geeft een korte, enigszins droge toon, waaraan met vibrato nog enige expressie kan worden toegevoegd. (het strijken zelf heet arco).

b. Bowed Instruments
The sound is generated by bowing strings. To change the pitch, the fingers of the left hand press the strings down onto the fingerboard ('stop' the strings) and thus shorten them. Strings are made of prepared animal (sheep) gut, metal (steel, aluminium) or silk. They are tuned to a fixed pitch. A sustained, smooth sound is produced by bowing up and down. This 'change of bow' does not necessarily affect the continuity of the sound.
It is possible to modify both the volume and the duration of the sound by handling the bow in different ways. Legato and staccato can be performed in all sorts of ways.
Strings can be dampened by placing a mute (sordino) on or against the bridge. Nowadays, this sordino is often placed behind the bridge, so it can be pressed against the bridge with a single movement.
Some ways of changing the normal sound of bowed instruments are:
• Flageolet notes: these are produced by resting the finger of the left hand lightly on certain points of the string (NOT pressing the string onto the fingerboard). This divides the vibrating part of the string into two, three or four parts, depending on the point where the string is touched, and generates one of the harmonic partials above the fundamental. Its sound is thinner and more delicate than the regular sound.
• Vibrato: when executed well and applied tastefully, a tremble in the left hand can make the sound warmer and richer.
• Pizzicato: plucking with the fingers instead of bowing. This produces a short, slightly dry sound, to which some expression can be added through vibrato. (The bowing itself is called arco).
