One problem often encountered when powder coating recessed objects is excess powder at the outside of the recess and practically no powder at the inside corners and sometimes almost no powder at the bottom of the recess. This phenomenon is a consequence of the so-called faraday cage effect. The electrostatic lines of force will tend to concentrate on the edges of a recess because of electrical resistance created by depression on the surface of the object. Electrical forces will always follow the path of least resistance. Powder will build rapidly on the edges, following the field lines and much less powder will drift into the recesses. This is a typical example of faraday cage effect in a corner. To overcome the faraday cage effect, there are different techniques to apply. By increasing the air pressure, powder particles may break out of their electrical field and penetrate the recess. By decreasing the voltage, the electrical field will be weaker and it is easier for the powder particles to break out of the electrical field and penetrate the recess.
