A year which began with optimism ends in the harsh glare of reality

This was the year the shadow fell. Perhaps we didn't allow ourselves to notice it, but some fin de siècle optimism, even idealism, had seeped into the collective bloodstream during the 90s.
We branded the decade a new era of caring and sharing, an antidote to the avarice and excess of the 80s. By 1997 the country seemed ready for a fresh start and more upbeat about itself than at any time since the 60s: we declared Britannia cool. But in the year 2000 we seem to have had a reality check - to have remembered that every light comes with shade.
Of course the most glaring symbol of the contrast is the dome. It was dreamed up as the incarnation of millennial confidence and hope: instead, it became a monument to British incompetence, vanity and a system of power which allows our governing politicians to make mistake after mistake with no scrutiny until it is too late.
The dome symbolised a more specific fall from grace, too. For the shambolic scenes in Greenwich last New Year's Eve marked the beginning of deep trouble not only for the big tent in east London but also for the big tent known as the Labour party.
Just as the dome was born of shining 90s optimism, only to be felled by a dose of 21st-century realism, so New Labour endured the same fate. The year 2000 was truly an annus horribilis for Tony Blair and his party. From the drubbing the government received last December 31 onwards, this year has been a series of kicks, dents and holes drilled into the once-gleaming façade of New Labour.
Perhaps the decisive vandal was Ken Livingstone, whose humiliation of Frank Dobson in the London mayoral contest was hailed as the lowest point of the Blair premiership (little did we know what was to follow). It exposed to public view what had long been the fatal flaw of New Labour: its control freakery, its tin ear for democracy, its contempt for dissent.
The bloom kept fading from the New Labour rose. If it wasn't a leaked memo from the PM's own pen - revealing him as no less scheming, calculating and image-conscious than any other politician - it was the poison that dripped from Andrew Rawnsley's book, which cast the Labour top table as a vipers' nest.
But the internal travails were the least of it. When Tony Blair was slow handclapped by the Women's Institute in June, the love affair with middle England entered its terminal, plate-throwing phase. Divorce proceedings began in September, when a few hundred fuel protesters seemed to put the country in a time-warp, plunging it back into the bad old days of the 70s.
So don't be surprised if Tony Blair toasts the new year with gusto tomorrow night - he's delighted to see the back of the old one. The irony, though, is that the PM might actually benefit from this year from hell. For he emerges from it a normal politician - and all the stronger for that. He is no longer the grinning good-luck charm of the mid-90s; he's now a leader tested in battle. He has come through the storms of the last year - and still commands a poll lead in double digits. In the past 12 months Blair has proved that he's not just a bridegroom who can charm the public during the honeymoon; he can also get stuck into the long haul of marriage.

Este ha sido el año en que cayeron las sombras. Quizá no nos permitimos caer en la cuenta de ello, pero en la década de los 90 cierto optimismo finisecular, incluso idealismo, se había filtrado en la corriente sanguínea colectiva.
Denominamos la década como una nueva era para cuidar y compartir, un antídoto contra la avaricia y los excesos de los 80. Hacia 1997 el país parecía estar preparado para empezar de nuevo con más optimismo que nunca desde los años 60: declaramos a Britania cool. Sin embargo, parece que en el 2000 hicimos una revisión de la realidad ―y nos acordamos de que no hay luz sin sombra.
Evidentemente el más flagrante símbolo de este contraste es el Dome. Fue soñado como la encarnación de la confianza y la esperanza en el Milenio; y sin embargo, se ha convertido en el monumento a la incompetencia y la vanidad británicas, además de a un sistema de poder que permite a los políticos que nos gobiernan cometer un error tras otro sin ser examinados rigurosamente hasta que ya es demasiado tarde.
El Dome ha simbolizado también otro tipo más específico de caída en desgracia: las escenas caóticas de Greenwich, en la Noche Vieja del año pasado, marcaron el comienzo de graves problemas no sólo para la gran carpa de la zonal este de Londres, sino también para aquella otra conocida como el Partido Laborista.
El destino del Dome, nacido del resplandeciente optimismo de los 90 y echado por tierra mediante una dosis de realismo del siglo XXI, fue compartido por el Nuevo Partido Laborista. El año 2000 fue un auténtico annus horribilis para Tony Blair y su partido. A partir de la derrota aplastante encajada por el gobierno el pasado 31 de diciembre, este año ha constituido una serie de patadas, abolladuras y golpes contra la antaño resplandeciente fachada del nuevo laborismo.
Tal vez el principal autor de este acto de vandalismo haya sido Ken Livingstone, cuya humillación a Frank Dobson en las elecciones a la alcaldía de Londres fue aclamada como la hora más baja del mandato del primer ministro Blair (poca idea teníamos entonces de lo que seguiría). Aquel incidente sacó a la luz lo que durante largo tiempo habían sido los defectos irreparables del nuevo laborismo: el control obsesivo, la falta de oído para la democracia, el desdén por los desacuerdos.
La flor del rosal del nuevo laborismo seguía marchitándose. Cuando no se trataba de un informe filtrado y escrito por el propio primer ministro ―revelando que era tan maquinador, calculador y consciente de su propia imagen como cualquier otro político― era el veneno que goteaba del libro escrito por Andrew Rawnsley, en el cual se retrataba a la cúpula del Partido Laborista como un nido de víboras.
Sea como sea, las tribulaciones internas del Partido eran lo de menos. Cuando, en junio, el Instituto de la Mujer manifestó su desaprobación a Blair, la historia de amor con la clase media inglesa llegó a su fase final al tirarse los platos a la cabeza. El proceso de divorcio empezó en septiembre cuando algunos cientos de manifestantes que protestaban por el precio del combustible parecieron sumir al país en una máquina del tiempo haciéndolo regresar a la desafortunada década de los 70.
Así que no se sorprendan si mañana Tony Blair brinda con entusiasmo por el año nuevo: estará encantado de despedir el que acaba de terminar. Lo irónico, no obstante, es que el primer ministro puede incluso beneficiarse de este año infernal, ya que emerge de él como un político normal ―y por lo tanto, fortalecido. Ya no es el encantador talismán de amplia sonrisa de mediados de los 90, sino un líder puesto a prueba en el campo de batalla. Ha atravesado las tormentas del año pasado y sigue encabezando las encuestas con más de diez puntos de ventaja. En los últimos 12 meses, Blair no sólo ha demostrado ser un novio capaz de cautivar a la opinión pública durante la luna de miel, sino también el que puede soportar el peso del largo y arduo camino del matrimonio.
