n the third summer of the war I began to meet refugees. There were large numbers of them in Montreal - to me a source of infinite wonder. I could not get enough of them. They came straight out of the twilit Socialist-literary landscape of my reading and my desires. I saw them as proph-rls of a promised social order that was to consist of justice, equality, art, personal relations, courage, generosity. Each of llinn - Belgian, French, Catholic German, Socialist German, Jewish German, Czech - was a book I tried to read from start to finish. My dictionaries were films, poems, novels, Lenin, Freud. That the refugees tended to hate one another seemed no more than a deplorable accident. Nationalist pig-headedness, that chronic, wasting, and apparently incurable disease, was known to me only on Canadian terms and I did not always recognize its symptoms. Anything I could not de¬cipher I turned into fiction, which was my way of untangling knots. At the office where I worked I now spent my lunch hour writing stories about people in exile. I tried to see Montreal as an Austrian might see it and to feel whatever he felt. I was entirely at home with foreigners, which is not surprising - the home was all in my head. They were the only people I had met until now who believed, as I did, that our victory would prove to be a tidal wave nothing could stop. What I did not know was how many of them hoped and expected their neigh¬bors to be washed away too.

Translation - Portuguese Comecei a conhecer refugiados no terceiro verão da segunda guerra. Havia um grande número deles em Montreal – o que, para mim, era fonte de infinito deslumbramento. Não me cansava deles. Vinham direto da obscura paisagem literária socialista de minhas leituras e anseios. Via-os como profetas de uma ordem social prometida, que consistiria de justiça, igualdade, arte, relações pessoais, coragem, generosidade. Cada um – belgas, franceses, alemães católicos, alemães socialistas, judeus alemães, tchecos – era um livro que eu tentava ler do início ao fim. Meus dicionários eram filmes, poemas, romances, Lênin, Freud. Que os refugiados se destestassem não me parecia mais do que um infeliz acidente. A obstinação nacionalista – doença desgastante, crônica e, aparentemente, incurável – me era familiar somente em termos canadenses, e nem sempre reconhecia os seus sintomas. Tudo o que não conseguia decifrar eu transformava em ficção, o que era a minha maneira de desatar nós. No escritório em que trabalhava, eu agora passava a hora do almoço escrevendo histórias sobre exilados. Tentava enxergar Montreal com os olhos de um austríaco e sentir o que ele sentia. Ficava totalmente à vontade com estrangeiros, o que não é surpreendente – a idéia de lar vivia em minha mente. Essas eram as únicas pessoas que havia encontrado que, como eu, acreditavam que nossa vitória provaria ser uma maré que nada seria capaz de deter. O que eu não sabia era quantos deles esperavam e estavam na expectativa de que água levasse embora também os seus vizinhos.

Source text - English It is important, however, to clarify what I mean by 'taste'. In the context of this book, ste' refers solely to the five tastes that we can detect in specialized taste cells in the
mouth. Current research indicates that these tastes are sour, salt, umami, bitter and sweet - umami has only recently been confirmed as a fifth taste - it is typified by the intense, wury taste of soy sauce or chicken stock. 'Taste' does not refer to flavour, which is aroma and is picked up by the olfactory cells in the roof of the nasal cavity. Every culinary ingredient has myriad flavours and usually several tastes, each of which vary in strength, ripe peach, for example, is predominately sweet with a hint of sourness, yet as you bite into its velvet skin, you will taste a little bitterness which is echoed in the flesh that clings to the stone. The peach's flavour lies in the subtle nuances of its scent. Which cook can resist trying to draw out such flattering tastes so that they resonate with one another like piece of music? Add a few drops of bitter almond essence with some sugar and cream id Ihe peach can be transformed into a sexily bitter-sweet ice cream.

No contexto deste livro, “gosto” refere-se apenas aos cinco gostos que podemos detectar em células degustativas específicas da boca. Pesquisas recentes indicam que estes gostos são azedo, salgado, umami, amargo e doce – é recente a confirmação de umami como um quinto sabor, aquele intenso, salgado, tal como o do molho de soja ou de um caldo de galinha. “Gosto” não se refere a “sabor” (que é “aroma”, detectado pelas células olfativas das paredes superiores da cavidade nasal). Todos ingredientes culinários possuem uma miríade de sabores e, comumente, diversos gostos, que variam na sua pungência. Source text - Spanish La tasa de nacimientos está batiendo récords en España. El número medio de hijos por mujer ha alcanzado su valor más alto de los últimos 19 años. A lo largo de 2008 se situó en 1,46, frente al 1,40 registrado en 2007, que fue también la cifra más alta de la década.
El Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) ha hecho públicos sus datos provisionales correspondientes a 2008 sobre el Movimiento Natural de la Población. En su informe indica que "la fecundidad en España prosigue su recuperación", buenas noticias que apuntan a un pequeño boom de natalidad en estos tiempos de crisis que corren.
Nuestro país se pone, así, en el puesto número 13 en la tabla conyuntural de fecundidad de la UE. Aquí se tienen más hijos que en Alemania, Reino Unido, Italia o Austria, pero menos que en Irlanda y en Francia, que son los dos estados más fértiles de Europa.

Translation - English It was Miguel Krigsner's, Boticário's founder, entrepreneurship in conjunction with his willingness to innovate and to attend to each of his customers in a personalized way that turned a small chemist's, inaugurated in 1977 in Curitiba's downtown, into the biggest perfums and cosmetics franchise chain stores in the world.
Boticario's expansion wasn't accidental. The brand has won its customers over with innovative products, ethical relations with its partners and the community and by keeping up with the good practice standards which have guided its contributors since the beginning.

Being a journalist as well as a translator means I am not only worried about the 'accuracy of meaning' of my translations - my concerns have equal strenght when it comes to 'how' I am going to transmit this same meaning to the language and style of my native culture. Writing as journalist creates a natural sense of customer skills and localisation, as you have always to bear in mind the 'whom' you are writing to.
Translating is re-writing and it requires the same, if not better, excellence found in the source text, my work transcends the language equivalence - there is always a sense of localisation and cultural context when I write and translate.
