Στην αναζήτηση και άρθρωση του υλικού αποφεύχθηκε η
γραμμική ανάγνωση των ιστορικών γεγονότων, παρότι αγγίζονται, συχνά έμμεσα, αρκετά από τα κυριότερα. Πρόθεση ήταν να συνταιριαστούν φωτογραφίες γνωστές και άγνωστες• να γειτνιάσουν η αισθητική με την τεκμηρίωση, αλλά να αναδειχθεί και η γοητευτική πρόσμιξή τους. Παράλληλα, επιδίωξη ήταν να φανεί η πολυσημία των συνθηκών στις οποίες η φωτογραφία δήλωσε παρούσα, ο αθησαύριστος πλούτος των ιδιωτικών αρχείων που συγκροτούνται φυλάσσοντας συνήθως οικογενειακές Θερμοπύλες. Μπορεί άλλωστε να διαχωριστεί αεροστεγώς η προσωπική από τη συλλογική μνήμη; Όταν αυτό συμβαίνει δεν είναι ανώφελο και αφόρητα διδακτικό; Στη φωτογραφία, μεταξύ άλλων, συνυφαίνονται λεπτά αλλά ισχυρά το επίσημο με το ανεπίσημο, το ιδιωτικό με το δημόσιο. Όμοια, μέρος της μαγείας της συνιστά ο τρόπος με τον οποίο επιτρέπει να αρχαιολογεί κανείς ελλειπτικά το παρελθόν. Φωτογραφίες ζυμωμένες με συγκεκριμένες συγκυρίες τινάζουν από πάνω τους τη σκόνη του χρόνου διεκδικώντας εκ νέου προσοχή, ζητώντας να αποτελέσουν έκφραση μιας εποχής, μιας τάξης, μιας γενιάς. Κάποιες μας θαμπώνουν μόνο με το εύρος όσων άλλαξαν. Αυτό όμως που διαπερνά τις περισσότερες, ως κοινός παρονομαστής, είναι η ζωτική σχέση της φωτογραφίας με τη θνητότητα. Αναμφίβολα είναι κρίμα που δεν εφευρέθηκε η τεχνική εικόνα νωρίτερα, ώστε να εγγράψει ευρύτερο ακόμη πλήθος σταθμών και στιγμών από τη μακραίωνη ιστορία αυτής της πόλης, να ψάξει βαθύτερα τα σώματα και αντισώματα ενός αστικού ιστού που δεν καταλύθηκε για περισσότερο από δυο χιλιετίες.
Το αφιέρωμα περιλαμβάνει φωτογραφίες στις οποίες οι άνθρωποι είναι πρωταγωνιστές ή κομπάρσοι• διευθετούνται αριστοτεχνικά σε μεγάλα ομαδικά πορτραίτα εποχής• διαδηλώνουν μαζικά σε κεντρικούς δρόμους που φέρουν επίμονα ονομασίες πολιτικών και αυτοκρατόρων• μετέχουν σε σκηνές της μικροϊστορίας και της μακροϊστορίας, με ανύποπτη θεατρικότητα προς τον μελλοντικό θεατή, ανήμποροι συχνά να αλλάξουν τη ροή των γεγονότων. Άλλες, πιο σύγχρονες συνιστούν ένα πιο φανερά καλλιτεχνικό σκίρτημα που οι άνθρωποι εμψύχωσαν εκούσια ή ακούσια, μαρτυρώντας συγχρόνως την εξέλιξη της φωτογραφικής τεχνολογίας και αισθητικής. Η σύνθεση αυτή εικόνων επανεκτιμά την κοινότοπη, αναμνηστική φωτογραφία ως ντοκουμέντο, σπανιότερα και για τις πλαστικές της αρετές. Προκαλεί ακόμη κάποιον να σκεφτεί πόσο αδιόρατα συγκατοικούν σ’ αυτήν στοιχεία εμπρόθετα και λανθάνοντα.

While exploring and arranging the material, we have tried to avoid the linear reading of history, although a considerable number of the most important facts are touched upon, often indirectly. Our intention was to combine well-known photographs with photographs which remained unnoticed; to bring together aesthetics and documentation, and to highlight their captivating synthesis. At the same time, we wished to underline the polysemy of those moments in history at which photography was present, and the untreasured wealth of the private archives, which exist, most of the times, so as to safeguard familial Thermopylae. Besides, is it ever possible to keep personal and collective memory apart? When this happens, is it not pointless and unbearably didactic? Subtly, but firmly, photography interweaves the formal and the informal, the private and the public – among other things. Similarly, its magic lies partly in the way it allows us to create a rather elliptical archaeology of the past. Photographs which were intertwined with specific circumstances shake off the dust of time and demand our attention afresh, asking to be acknowledged as the expression of an era, a class, or a generation. Some of them astound us merely by showing how much everything has changed. However, what permeates most photographs, serving as a common denominator so to speak, is the vital relationship of photography with mortality. It is indeed unfortunate that the technical image was not invented earlier; had it been, it would have recorded an even greater number of milestones and moments from the centuries-long history of this city, and it would have looked deeper into the bodies and antibodies of an urban fabric which has remained intact for more than two millennia.
In the photographs of the present volume, people feature either as protagonists or as extras; they are masterfully arranged in large historical period group portraits; they protest en masse in central streets persistently bearing the names of politicians and emperors; they take part in scenes of micro- as well as macro-history, unaware of their own theatricality towards their future viewer, often unable to change the flow of events. Some other photographs, more recent, reflect a more explicit artistic quiver, consciously or unconsciously embodied by people, thereby attesting at the same time the technical and aesthetic developments in the art of photography. This combination of pictures re-asseses the documentational value and (although admittedly less often) the plastic virtue of the commonplace commemorative photograph. It also invites us to reflect on the imperceptible symbiosis of intentional and latent elements.

Viewing from the Walls, Viewing Helen: Language and Indeterminacy in the ‘Teichoscopia’

WHEN WE DISCUSS THE ROLE OF HELEN in the Iliad, we should always keep in mind that she is situated in the midst of the Iliadic war and myth, which differs in its plot from Trojan lore, albeit their obvious connection. The Iliadic myth is not simply a miniature of its Trojan predecessor, but a sophisticated selection and reworking of certain episodes with a change of emphasis and scope. To this extent, the case of Helen is paradigmatic. For in the Trojan myth Helen was the protagonist (since both the beginning and end of the war were connected to her), whereas in its Iliadic version her importance became secondary.
The literature on Helen in the Iliad is extensive, but it has been mainly concerned with questions of a genetic nature. Scholars have been interested in the dilemma concerning her innocence or guilt, trying to examine and trace its mythological origin. Even very recent efforts have adopted the basis for this dilemma, although they interpret it in terms of its poetic function.
The aim of this chapter is to examine Helen’s language in the
‘Teichoscopia’ in an effort to determine its poetic mechanics and to disclose Helen’s status and function in this episode. In other words, how does Helen’s diction reflect her thematic marginalization within the Iliadic plot?

Γλώσσα και Αοριστία στην «Τειχοσκοπία»

Όταν πραγματευόμαστε τον ρόλο της Ελένης στην Ιλιάδα, πρέπει να έχουμε πάντα κατά νου πως η ηρωίδα τοποθετείται στο κέντρο του ιλιαδικού πολέμου και μύθου, ο οποίος διαφέρει ως προς την πλοκή από τον τρωικό μύθο, παρά την προφανή μεταξύ τους σχέση. Ο ιλιαδικός μύθος δεν αποτελεί μια απλή μινιατούρα του προγενέστερου τρωικού, αλλά μια ώριμη επιλογή και εκ νέου επεξεργασία συγκεκριμένων επεισοδίων στα οποία προσδίδει μια διαφορετική έμφαση και πρόθεση. Ως εκ τούτου, η περίπτωση της Ελένης είναι παραδειγματική γιατί, ενώ στον τρωικό μύθο η Ελένη ήταν η πρωταγωνίστρια (εφόσον τόσο η αρχή όσο και το τέλος του πολέμου συνδέονταν με αυτή), στην ιλιαδική εκδοχή του μύθου αποκτά δευτερεύουσα θέση.
Η φιλολογία για την ιλιαδική Ελένη είναι εκτενής, αλλά αφορά κυρίως ερωτήματα γενετικής φύσης. Οι μελετητές έχουν ενδιαφερθεί για το περί αθωότητας και ενοχής δίλημμα, επιχειρώντας να εξετάσουν και να ανιχνεύσουν τις μυθολογικές του καταβολές. Ακόμη και πολύ πρόσφατες δοκιμές έχουν υιοθετήσει τη βάση του ίδιου αυτού διλήμματος, αν και το ερμηνεύουν με όρους ποιητικής λειτουργίας.
Σκοπός του κεφαλαίου αυτού είναι να εξετάσει τη γλώσσα της Ελένης στην «Τειχοσκοπία» σε μια προσπάθεια να καθοριστεί η ποιητική μηχανική της και να διαφανεί η θέση και η λειτουργία της ηρωίδας στο συγκεκριμένο επεισόδιο. Με άλλα λόγια: πώς αντανακλάται στο λεκτικό της Ελένης η θεματική της περιθωριοποίηση στην ιλιαδική πλοκή;

A classicist by profession, I have been working as a freelance translator for the past 13 years both in academic publishing and in film subtitling. My studies testify both to my love for and my sound knowledge of the Greek language in all its forms throughout its millennia-long history, while my extended and extensive involvement with the English language over the years has equipped me with a solid understanding of its diction and grammar, whatever the register or style.

As a translator, I specialize in the Humanities and the Arts. Although a native speaker of Greek, and thus translating mainly from English to Greek, I do occasionally translate from Greek to English: besides numerous minor projects for online publication, I recently participated in the edition of the bilingual volume Thessaloniki: A City of People (2017), being responsible for the translation of the Greek texts into English. I am currently translating Brill’s Companion to Sophocles to Greek, which is to be published by University Studio Press of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2019.
