Audi surpasses 100,000 cars sold in China for the first time
• Growth of 25 percent to 101,996 cars
• China is Audi’s biggest export market
• Growth doubled for imported vehicles
Ingolstadt – Audi achieved a new sales record in China in 2007, selling 101,996
cars in China (including Hong Kong) – a gain of about 25 percent compared to the
previous year.
Sales of locally produced cars grew by 21 percent to a total of 93,168 units, including
73,404 Audi A6 models (up 19 percent) and 19,764 Audi A4 models (up 27 percent). An
above-average gain of 115 percent to 7,720 units was achieved for imported vehicles.
With 3,401 units, sales of the Audi A8 were up 22 percent, and deliveries of the Audi Q7
rose by 349 percent to 3,631 vehicles. Hong Kong also recorded growth of more than
23 percent (1,108 cars sold).
“This result is a major success for us, and it confirms Audi as the market leader in the
premium segment in China,” said Ralph Weyler, Member of the Board of Management of
AUDI AG for Marketing and Sales. “This makes China the biggest export market for
Audi. And we expect further increases in sales figures for 2008. These increases will
also be driven by the market launches of the Audi R8, Audi A5 and S5.”
In order to continue Audi’s successful course in China, Audi’s dealer network is being
continuously expanded. There are currently 125 exclusive Audi dealerships in 85 cities.
Audi has been present in China since 1988, and in 2008 the company will celebrate its
twentieth year of partnership with FAW, its Chinese joint-venture partner.

DURING the six months to the end of June commodities posted their best performance in 35 years, rising by 29%. In July they had their worst month in 28 years, falling by 10%. The slide continues: an index compiled by Reuters, a news agency, shows that prices are almost a fifth below the pinnacle reached in early July. The Financier’s index, which excludes oil, has fallen by over 12%. Breathless headlines have hailed the bursting of a bubble.
But most analysts are more reticent. They cite various reasons for the recent drop in prices, chief among them the darkening economic outlook in rich countries. In recent weeks it has become clear that Europe and Japan are faring even worse than America, and so are likely to consume less oil, steel, cocoa and the like. But that does not necessarily presage a collapse in commodity prices, they argue, thanks to enduringly strong demand from emerging markets such as China.
Oil consumption, for example, has been falling in rich countries for over two years. Goldman Sachs expects them to use 500,000 fewer barrels a day (b/d) this year than last. But it reckons that decline will be more than offset by an increase of 1.3m b/d in emerging markets. It predicts China’s demand for oil will grow by 5%.
