Se c’è – a Palermo – un monumento medievale che riserva ancora molti interrogativi, piuttosto che fornire certezze, questo è certamente il complesso architettonico di San Giovanni degli Eremiti. Ma è proprio l’indeterminatezza che riguarda la sua nebulosa storia architettonica nonché il particolare aspetto che, a partire dall’Ottocento, ha assunto questo luogo con l’impianto di un rigoglioso giardino, che costituiscono oggi il fascino intrinseco di questo complesso. Infatti siamo di fronte ad una chiesa, ai resti di un convento e ad un chiostro di particolare bellezza, nonché ad un giardino esotico che avvolge tutto in un’atmosfera di fascino e di mistero. Di fronte a tutti questi elementi la fantasia umana si accende in una estasi particolare che ci induce serenamente a sognare. Così questi luoghi ci appaiono come la vaga testimonianza di un Oriente favoloso che, in realtà, qui in questo luogo non è mai esistito. E allora perché ci affascina tanto? È un mistero che cercheremo di districare insieme.
Questa guida vuole aiutare il visitatore a penetrare in questo antico mondo di intrecci eterogenei ma fascinosi, dissolvendo le ombre che lo avvolgono e chiarendo le problematiche architettoniche. Ciò per far meglio apprezzare – nei suoi giusti caratteri storico-architettonici – questo importante complesso del Medio Evo palermitano.

If there is one medieval monument in Palermo which still leaves a great many questions unanswered, it is certainly the architectural complex of San Giovanni degli Eremiti. And yet, the uncertainties about its obscure architectural history and the “peculiar” aspect the place has had since the 19th century, when a luxuriant garden was added to it, contribute to its charm today. The complex consists of a church, the remains of a monastery and a beautiful cloister, surrounded by an exotic garden which creates an enchanting and mysterious atmosphere. We are enraptured by the sight of all these features, and become lost in daydreams. These places thus appear as the hazy vestiges of a fairy-tale Orient which never actually existed there. So why are they so fascinating? It is a mystery we shall try to solve together.
The aim of this guide is to help the visitor penetrate this ancient world characterized by the charming interweaving of many different elements, removing the doubts which surround it and highlighting its architecture so that the visitor can better appreciate the true historical and architectural characteristics of this important medieval complex in Palermo.

Questi mosaici palermitani sono stati studiati dai più grandi specialisti di arte musiva bizantina: Otto Demus; Ernst Kitzinger; p. B Rocco; p. G. Valentini. Il ciclo dei mosaici si è conservato per la sua gran parte ad onta delle manomissioni interne subite dalla chiesa nel corso dei secoli e della distruzione totale dell’abside centrale originaria nonché della parete occidentale. La porzione basamentale delle pareti interne che oggi risulta nuda (muratura a vista) per circa m. 4 di altezza e priva di decorazioni poteva essere anticamente rivestita da una alta zoccolatura in lastre di marmo con elementi decorativi in porfido e serpentino, come nella Cappella Palatina (Palazzo Reale) e nel Duomo di Monreale.
La disposizione dei quadri musivi segue uno schema di perfetta semplicità e simmetria, mai più raggiunto in nessun’altra delle chiese coeve panormite. È evidente che la chiesa medievale fu destinata al culto greco anche perché le iscrizioni che si accompagnano i quadri musivi sono esclusivamente in lingua greca. Infatti numerose sono le iscrizioni in mosaico che si accompagnano alle figure singole o alle scene più popolate. Queste danno il nome contratto o semplificato del personaggio raffigurato e, in altri casi, riproducono preghiere e invocazioni tratte da passi della liturgia bizantina.
Il punto focale della decorazione musiva è la cupola dove, al suo culmine, dentro un medaglione centrale, il Cristo Pantocratore appare seduto in trono, con la mano destra tesa in avanti a benedire e la mano sinistra che regge sulle ginocchia il libro chiuso del Vangelo.
Translation - English The Byzantine mosaics
These Palermitan mosaics have been studied by the greatest Byzantine mosaic art scholars including Otto Demus, Ernst Kitzinger, Father B. Rocco, Father G. Valentini. The mosaic cycle has been for the most part preserved in spite of the transformation of the church interior over the centuries and of the demolition of the original main apse and west wall. In ancient times, the lower part of the internal walls which now consists of bare, unadorned masonry up to a height of about 4 metres was probably coated with tall marble slabs with porphyry and serpentine decoration, similar to those in the Palatine Chapel (Royal Palace) and the Duomo of Monreale.
The arrangement of the mosaic panels is marked by its perfect simplicity and symmetry, both of which are unequalled in Palermitan churches of the same period. The medieval church was obviously intended for the Greek rite, as is also shown by the fact that all the inscriptions in the mosaics are in Greek. These accompany both the single figures and the more crowded scenes, indicating the shortened or simplified name of the character depicted or, in other cases, reproducing prayers and supplications taken from passages of the Byzantine liturgy.
The focal point of the mosaic decoration is the dome, where the enthroned Christ Pantocrator is depicted within a central medallion, his right hand blessing and his left hand holding a closed Gospel on his knees.
