Source text - English Why is it called the Cambridge Diet?
The diet was developed by Professor Alan Howard at Cambridge University over 20 years ago. He needed to discover a way for patients to lose weight quickly who were waiting for heart surgery. Weight loss had to be fast, healthy and effective. His research led to the formation of meal replacements, each one providing one third of an individual’s daily nutritional requirements. So in taking 3 meals a day (4 for men), the individual was having a healthy diet containing all the nutrients required by the body. Patients lost weight so rapidly that the diet was then launched nationally, as an alternative to conventional diets. The diet is now also used by health professionals worldwide and is even recommended by the UK’s National Health Service as being an effective method of combating obesity.

Η διατροφή αυτή αναπτύχθηκε από τον καθηγητή Alan Howard στο πανεπιστήμιο του Cambridge πάνω από 20 χρόνια πριν. Ο Δρ Howard έπρεπε να ανακαλύψει έναν τρόπο ώστε οι ασθενείς του οι οποίοι περίμεναν χειρουργική επέμβαση καρδιάς να χάσουν βάρος γρήγορα. Η απώλεια βάρους έπρεπε να είναι γρήγορη, υγιής και αποτελεσματική. Η έρευνά του, τον οδήγησε στη δημιουργία αντικατάστατων γευμάτων, από τα οποία το καθένα παρέχει το ένα τρίτο των καθημερινών θρεπτικών αναγκών ενός ατόμου. Έτσι με τη λήψη 3 γευμάτων ημερησίως (4 για τους άνδρες), το άτομο μπορούσε να έχει μια υγιεινή διατροφή που περιείχε όλες τις θρεπτικές ουσίες που απαιτούνται από το σώμα. Οι ασθενείς έχασαν βάρος τόσο γρήγορα, που η διατροφή προωθήθηκε σε εθνικό επίπεδο, ως εναλλακτική λύση των συμβατικών διατροφών για απώλεια βάρους. Η διατροφή χρησιμοποιείται τώρα επίσης από τους επαγγελματίες υγείας παγκοσμίως και συστήνεται ακόμη και από τη ΒΡΕΤΑΝΙΚΗ Εθνική Υγειονομική Υπηρεσία ως μια αποτελεσματική μέθοδος ενάντια στην παχυσαρκία.
