Este estudo foi realizado em uma área de savana (02° 51’N 60° 45’W) próxima da cidade de Boa Vista, capital de Roraima. O objetivo geral foi realizar uma investigação de monitoração de tamanduá-bandeira (Mymercophaga tridactyla, Linnaeus, 1758) por rádiotelemetria, subsidiando o desenvolvimento de planos de manejo para a espécie na Amazônia, e em especial em Roraima. Foi estimada a área de vida, uso de habitat e seu padrão de atividade. Vinte e um tamanduás-bandeira (12 fêmeas e 9 machos) foram capturados, dos quais 10 foram equipados com rádio-coletes com transmissor VHF e, seis indivíduos receberam receptores GPS, entre fevereiro de 2007 e maio de 2008 em períodos distintos. A área de vida média calculada a partir das informações obtidas por VHF pelo método do Mínimo Polígono Convexo (MPC) para todos os indivíduos foi de 4,35 ±2,94 km2. Pelo método Kernel Fixo BCV (Biased Cross Validation) foi de 10,89 ± 9,29 km2 e Kernel Fixo LSCV (Least Square Cross Validation) de 3,57 ± 6,2 km2, ambos para 95% das localizações. A área de vida calculada pelas localizações obtidas por GPS de acordo com o MPC foi de 2,57 ± 0,1 km2 para três fêmeas e 3,13 km2 para o único macho acompanhando. O índice de sobreposição das áreas de vida dos indivíduos variou de 0 a 98,9%. Todos os indivíduos sobrepuseram sua área com três ou mais tamanduás-bandeira. A razão sexual foi 1:1,33 (n = 21). O sistema de GPS modificado permitiu o monitoramento dos tamanduás-bandeira por períodos de 17 a 20 dias. O deslocamento diário mínimo de um tamanduá-bandeira foi de 35 metros e, o máximo, de 5962 metros. Em geral, os tamanduás-bandeira se deslocaram com velocidade inferior a 1,0 km/h, mas podem alcançar 8,63 km/h. A atividade do tamanduá-bandeira foi noturna para o período analisado, com os picos ocorrendo entre as 21:00h e 6:00h. Os animais estão (i) ativos (deslocamento e forrageio) nos horários mais amenos, entre 20°C e 28°C utilizando principalmente ambientes abertos, e (ii) inativos em horários mais quentes, quase sempre acima de 28°C quando utilizam os ambientes de vegetação fechada. Foi realizado hemograma completo em 19 indivíduos, com as análises hematológicas demonstrando que a espécie da localidade estudada em Roraima está próxima da média sugerida pela literatura científica para outras regiões. Nos esfregaços sangüíneos foi encontrada Microfilaria em dois indivíduos. Foi diagnosticada Malassezia sp em lâminas de cerúmen. Todos os indivíduos foram diagnosticados negativos para Leishmaniose pelo teste de ELISA. O estado clínico geral de todos os animais foi considerado bom.

This study was carried out in the savanna area (02° 51’N 60° 45’W) close to the city of Boa Vista, the capital of the state Roraima, Brazil. The main objective was to carry out an investigation, monitoring the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Linnaeus, 1758) by radio-telemetry, to help the development of management plans for the species in the Amazon, and especially in Roraima. The species’ home range was estimated, habitat usage and its standard activities. Twenty one giant anteaters (12 females and 9 males) were captured, of which 10 were equipped with radio-collars with VHF transmitters, and six individuals were tagged with GPS receivers, between February 2007 and May 2008 in distinct periods. The main home range calculated based on the information acquired by VHF using the Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP) method for all individuals was 4.35 ±2.94 km2. For the Fixed Kernel BCV (Biased Cross Validation) method, it was 10.89 ±9.29 km2 and for the Fixed Kernel LSCV (Least Square Cross Validation), 3.57 ±6.2 km2, both for 95% of the locations. The home range calculated for the locations obtained by GPS according to the MCP was 2.57 ±0.1 km2 for the females and 3.13 km2 for the only male. The overlay register of the home ranges of the individuals varied from 0 to 98.9%. All individuals had their home ranges overlaid with three or more giant anteaters. The gender ratio was 1:1.33 (N= 21). The modified GPS system allowed monitoring of the giant anteaters during periods of 17 to 20 days. The minimum daily movement of a giant anteater was 35 meters and the maximum was 5962 meters. Generally, the giant anteaters move at a velocity inferior to 1.0 km/h, but they can reach up to 8,63 km/h. The activity of the giant anteater was nocturnal during the period of investigation, essentially between 21 and 6hs. The animals are (i) active (displacement and foraging) in the cooler periods, between 20°C and 28°C using mostly open environments, and (ii) inactive during the hotter periods of the day, mostly over 28°C when they use closed vegetation environments. Samples of blood were collected from 19 specimens to evaluate the hematological patterns of wild life. A complete blood analysis was done, with the hematological analysis demonstrating that the species from the area studied in Roraima is close to the mean parameters suggested by scientific literature for other regions. Dirofilaria immitis was found in two individuals and by means of the Panoptic method, Malassezia sp was diagnosed on otologic smears. All individuals tested negative for Leishmaniasis using the ELISA test. The general condition of all animals was considered good.

Bio
I was born in a tiny town on the Brazilian border with Guyana, South America.

My formal education, right through university, was first in Guyana then I moved back to Brazil to take up teaching English as a second and foreign language. Though my major at university was Electrical Engineering, I took up English language teaching in 2002 investing in this new field - my now chosen career.

I worked with the leading language school in the city for three years, a year and a half of which in the capacity of Academic Coordinator, before setting out to start my own school in partnership with a fellow teacher. In the three years of our existence (2005 - 2008), we have grown from two classroom operation to the only language institution offering six languages in the northern most states of Brazil and a member of the elite few in the entire country offering English, German, French Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

I am fluent in two languages - English and Portuguese and one English based creole dialect of the Caribbean. As a translator/interpreter my CV includes work done for jungle hotels and resorts in the Amazon, the Brazilian Armed Forces, the Brazilian Federal Police, the Federal Courts in the City of Boa Vista, an American Multinational Agricultural Company, the Federal University of Roraima, the State University of Roraima and private citizens in the cities of Boa Vista and Manaus, Brazil. I have also done work in the city of Georgetown, capital of Guyana, for companies and private citizens alike.

I am currently employed by an American company as a permanent translator/interpreter handling all monthly communication between headquarters in Columbus, Iowa, USA and their sister company in Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil and simultaneous translation on directors visits to Brazil for company business and conferences. I am also preparing my second batch of students - university professors - for the English Language Entry Examinations to the Masters Degree and Doctorate Selection Programme in Boa Vista.
