Just over a hundred years ago, the first paper machines were put into operation at the same site where we now have one of Europe’s most modern, high-tech soft paper mills for the production of special tissue and certain categories of airlaid material.

In Gustavsfors, near Skåtafors, pulp production started as early as 1874 under the direction of mill owner Johan Ekman. Early on, he made plans to expand activities to include a sulfite factory in Skåpafors. However, in 1890 the general meeting found that a chemical pulp factory in Skåpafors required far too much investment, and the plan was scrapped.

Not until 1897 was the decision made to move paper production from Gustavfors to Skåpafors. It was the idealistic location at Skåpaströmmen that dictated where the paper-mill would be located. In the autumn of 1898, after a certain amount of remodeling, the first paper machine began production in Skåpafors. The machine, with a working width of 183 cm, was known as a “Yankee machine.”

The demand for kraft paper in the fast developing industrial society grew rapidly. As a result, industrial-strength kraft paper became Skåpafors paper-mill’s first product. The mill probably also produced striped wrapping paper and bag paper in different colors—“all cellulose and exceptionally strong,” as the advertisements claimed.
