My condolences Apr 10, 2010

To the Polish people on this tragedy. There was not only the president, but "Poland's army chief, central bank governor, MPs and leading historians were among more than 80 passengers." Very sad, indeed.

1. You are not shell-shocked. You are simply shocked.

Shell-shock: A mental disorder caused by stress of active warfare.

2. You have my sympathies. There are countries where sudden death of the president would be considered a blessing, but it is my understanding that the Polish leader was much loved, right?

I guess you are talking about countries with a military dictatorship.
And it seems to me that you are not aware that Poland is not one of them.

It doesn’t matter now if we loved our President or not. He and his wife died in a tragic catastrophe, together with other ca. 90 persons.
It’s a human tragedy. Don’t you think so?
regards, Ewa

Not that it matters in this situation, but since you mentioned it:
“shell-shocked (adjective) - shocked, confused or anxious because of a difficult situation, and unable to think or act normally”
according to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary

Poland's history has been complicated, and when you read that one of the victims of the tragedy of 10 April 2010 was the last President of the Government of the Republic of Poland in Exile you may want to know more.

Please spare a moment and look here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_government-in-exile#Presidents

you may learn something new about Poland's complicated history, and if you read about our history after 1939 you should understand why we say that Poland got its real independence in 1989.

Very sad we are now indeed.....
Once more part of Poland's elite died in the same place - this sends shivers down my spine.

Lech, I need 50 years or more practicing before I can sing it like you do, but once I'll join you up there and we'll sing it together! In the meantime, you praise the Lord up there like you did here below, I'm sure!

Rest in peace, all who died!

Is the discussion about the ducks useful?
Incumbent politicians hardly are loved. We want politicians to give us hope, so we revere them when they predict better times. They get so used to honeycooling that they do the same when reigning "Re-elect me and in my next term I'll solve the current problems". "It's the economy, stupid" said silly Billy and gave people false hope by raising sound mortgage restrictions to make "everybody rich". Half of the world walked in his trap so his successor got elected with 80% or so.

Not really and not by everybody. Others knew him as "The new potato of Poland" (a satiric joke, the title of an article published in 2006 in the newspaper taz, which caused some shocked polish not-taz-readers to be even more shocked)

But yes, if following the forum, he seems to have been quite much loved, almost personally somehow. I'm surprised a bit, but that's how it looks like. Large family or a very fomal codex.
