An idea Apr 24, 2007

I think it's a good idea to form a group from the hotel. Please take into account that it takes about 15 minutes of walking to get there. The place is booked for us from 6 pm.

Many of you might be doing some sightseeing during the day. In this case it does not make much to come back to the hotel just to join this group.

Grand Café Oktogon is very centrally located, so you can easily get there after sightseeing.

If you come from downtown, you can easily walk to Oktogon, or take the underground (line 1) from Vörösmarty tér or Deák tér to Oktogon.

If you come from the Buda Castle area (e.g. you finished the walking tour there and you stayed there for the rest of the afternoon), you have two options:
1. From Dísz tér in the Castle, take bus 16 to Deák tér and walk from there or take the underground to Oktogon.
2. You can easily walk downhill to Moszkva tér, the most important transport hub in Buda. From here, you should take tram 4 or 6 to Oktogon.

Meet @.... Apr 24, 2007

My plane lands at 15:30 so Iguess will get to the hotel not earlier then 16:40 (by the way, how is traffic in Budapest? Is the airport very far from the town/hotel?). Csaba, do I understand you correct that we could either walk to the Grand Caffe, which would take 15 minutes, or walking to the Metro station and then the short trip by Metro and then 100 meters from the Oktagon Metro Station, which all together would take 15 minutes? Could you please very roughly tell us in both cases how long do we need to count so that we fix an approximate time to meet at the loby of the Hotel Benczùr and then leave from there? Is it reasonable to say: Let's meet at 17:25 at the loby and leave 17:35? Thanks Csaba and colleagues for tidying up this bit as well. Cheers from still chilly Kiev, Ukraine)Collapse

answers Apr 24, 2007

For airport arrival info, please see the Venue tab.

It's an easy 15-minute walk from the hotel to Oktogon, so if there's a larger group, I'd recommend walking and skipping the metro.
Metro wagons on this line are quite small, so they're not suitable for very large groups.
Also, Andrássy út is a world heritage site (perhaps a bit overrated though), so you can really enjoy walking.

Greek power! :Pp Apr 24, 2007

The girls from Greece and I arrive at 16.40, and this will make it a bit hard to catch up with you at the hotel, but I hope we will manage to arrive at Oktogon, on time!)

Oktogon: it's a no brainer Apr 24, 2007

1. I am sure, you will find town centre maps in all the hotels.
2. From the Benczur, you head West, to Andrassy ut, turn left there, walk along Andrassy in southerly direction to Oktogon square. As you get nearer you will see yellow trams going accross. That's your clue to Oktogon square.
Nice walk, no rain, I promise.
I you are VERY late, ask the hotel for a taxi, 4-5 minutes ride.

Taxi Apr 25, 2007

Csaba, just wanted to let you know that is was pratically impossible to book online a cab at the City Taxi. After filling all the fields, the site requires a mandatory Hungarian contact/telephone number. Since I do not have a HUngarian telephone number I gave the one I found on the web site of the Hotel Benczur (by the way, can we include here or at the conference page at Venue tab the address of the hotel, as I didn't see it and I had to google it) but it kept telling me that it was not the cor... Will try to call them from here to book, as I imagine many cabs will be busy by that time of the 28th of April. Thanks)Collapse

Fabiana, taxi Apr 25, 2007

If you are concerned to get in from the airport, it won't make much difference to pre-order a taxi or take one from the company running it at the airport.

If you were thinking of going to the Cafe Oktogon by taxi, you just ask the hotel concierge to call one for you. It may take 5-10 minutes to arrive, but no more. As the distance is about 2 km, they are not going to be able to fleece you.
