Preparation. Need to know as much as possible about future "consumer": meet them, call them, know at least something about them, about their interest in the oncoming contact. If it's a written translation for an agency: know anything about the manager
I have no rituals whatsoever! It depends on the text to be translated, but in general I just start translating and I am always on the mood... Unless having a cup of coffee before starting another day of work can be seen as a "ritual"...

Teresa Borges wrote: I have no rituals whatsoever! ..... I just start translating and I am always on the mood. It's that simple! I don't require to do anything to get into the mood for translating. Obviously, there are some practical/administrative tasks that have to be done each time, such as looking out the relevant dictionaries, configuring CAT tools for the particular project etc., but that falls into a different category which is not relevant to this question.

I usually light candles and start going "Ohmmm" for about five minutes sitting with my back facing the computer. Then I get up, keeping my eyes closed, do a back-flip, slap myself on the cheeks four times (each cheek) and I'm ready to start translating.

I wouldn't call it a ritual | Sep 5, 2011 |
But I always check the news in the morning before I start work. I also do it after long breaks like lunch - it is a moment when I switch from relax to work.

When I know the translation is going to be boring, I read something more interesting first, so as to have my brain nourished (too) for a couple of hours at least. As the previous person said, it also helps warming up mentally, it wakes up the neurons! I would call it a procrastination ritual more than anything else, though...

I have almost the same technique, but I have to limit myself to three slaps on each cheek otherwise I get too motivated.

My "ritual" begins the moment I open my browser. The of the (seemingly) permanently open tabs includes a video with a very inspiration song by one of my favorite singers. I do take the time to watch it, not only because of its spiritual message but also because of the fantastic background scenes. It's both relaxing and "encouraging".
My only ritual is, at any time of the day, a wonderful cup of coffee... (espresso) it helps me so much to start the day. Emanuela

Tidying my desk if necessary while the computer wakes up is the only ritual, if that is what it is. And the precise placement of a nice hot cup of coffee on the desk signals the green light.

although I would not do it all the time but sometimes on long projects when I get bored I need a bath, or a nice walk to get back in the mood when the project last for weeks. Otherwise I need a good cup of tea and some fresh air (to oxygenate my neurones I guess)
