If possible, I finish it before the end of the day (which for me would be the working day, ending around 6 or 6.30 pm) so that I can read through it the next morning before sending it off.

Especially if I'm getting to the end of the document after a long day and am tired. Sometimes little problems like vocabulary choices or turns of phrase can vanish overnight when approached with fresh eyes and rested brain the next morning.

If the subject is difficult to me and/or quality is very important, I leave it overnight - one can always find additional mistakes and/or improvements on the morrow. As to routine translations, I want to have them off my hands as fast as possible.

Isn’t there a slight incoherence in the question? Or is it my turn to be picky? For me, finalize means to put in final or finished form… What I general do, deadline permitting, is to complete the translation part of the work before the end of the day and proofread it the next morning with (hopefully) fresh eyes.

When I finish my translation (which is usually in final form; I rarely do drafts), I proofread it immediately. I worry that something might come up that would prevent me from delivering it the next day, such as a power outage or computer malfunction. Also, I have made mistakes in the past in interpreting the time difference. So to be on the safe side, unless I feel brain dead, I don't take a break; I go straight into proofreading and then delivery.

Ditto. The longer the gap between translating and checking, the better.
However, I suspect that this is less feasible for CAT slaves.

If time allows, I prefer to put a translation aside for a while before checking it. A fresh mind is more alert and better at spotting errors.

It all depends on how many hours I've spent on the translation, the level of difficulty, and the time of the day when I'm finished with it. If it's still relatively early in the day/evening, then I just leave it sit for a couple of hours and then proofread/finalize it.

But after an event a couple of months ago, which left us without electricity one morning, I am wary of leaving things unsent once finished.

If it's on Euro time, I just make sure it's done before I retire for the night, but if it's more local, I'll leave it for the AM and give it one more look-over, especially if it's a longer project, technical in manner or a powerpoint presentation.

If possible, I like to finish the translation as soon as possible, review it once for style and QA issues when asked by the client tool and leave it vanish from my mind before a last good proofreading, in particularly for spelling. I never see all spelling or grammar errors if I do that immediately. Sleep helps me much to clean up my mind.
As for CAT tools, I've never felt "enslaved" and I can proofread whenever I want.

If I don't finish the job before 4:00 am, I'll only work on it again after 2:00 pm the next day. So the deadline has to be next evening or two mornings later.
