Every time this question is asked, and it has been asked several times, I wonder if anyone has been sued or knows of any cases where a translator was sued. From this you could rightly infer that I do not have professional liability insurance…

Another attempt to provide unnecessary services? Dec 2, 2016

I really don't see why such insurance would be needed, and feel like it's a bad idea. It's one thing to be a contractor, with no benefits, but at least master of one's destiny. But even suggesting such insurance is necessary, well, feels like a bad attempt at marketing crapola.

Just got one Dec 2, 2016

It certainly is not an absolute need but if you're working in a rather specific area, it might come in handy.

I read about it a few years back at Gaëlle's blog: http://www.trematranslations.com/2013/05/04/l-assurance-professionnelle-pouvez-vous-vous-en-passer/. If your terms and contract with the client(s) are well enough d

If your terms and contract with the client(s) are well enough defined, your liability is supposedly denied or negated at some point. However I still can't shake the feeling that any client would feel "reassured" if they knew I can endorse and be fully responsible for what I translated on a formal point of view.

once again!!

ProZ Staff, why do you keep posting these sorts of questions? There are so many polls that have not been posted yet, why are constantly posting "old" ones.
I have made three or four suggestions over the past years and only see none.

I do not even make any suggestions any more because the chances of it getting an informative poll posted seem to by quite rare???

And as for those posting, you cannot really be interrested in the question othe

I think the question is relevant, and as a legal translator I have looked into this earlier.

However, it turns out that our insurance companies here in Denmark are not interested in providing such insurance for translators, and if the do it would be extremely costly.

Asked an insurer about it once and it was enormously expensive - it is geared for industrial companies.

I must agree with Teresa and Sunseri in every thing they said

If I wanted to invest in an insurance, I would certainly increase the covereages of my health plan and my retirement plan, which are the critical ones.

Reading carefully every clause of every contract you sign – and requiring the due changes before signing – as well as not accepting jobs in critical areas that are not one's specialty (for example, I won't transalte a medical procedure) are examples of me

Reading carefully every clause of every contract you sign – and requiring the due changes before signing – as well as not accepting jobs in critical areas that are not one's specialty (for example, I won't transalte a medical procedure) are examples of measures to make sure you will never be civilly liable for anything. There are others, of course. These two are just examples.

Yes Dec 2, 2016

It is necessary in Argentina when providing simultaneous interpreting services... Sometimes you don't get the job just because you don't have this insurance policy.

It is a matter of need. Dec 2, 2016

I would have one depending on job/contract specifications. In my career, I have experienced so many different paths; tools or services I said or thought I would never have or use, and then, I needed them.

I did not consider simultaneous interpretation in my feedback, but you are absolutely right. In some cases, it is necessary.
