In fact, I did so yesterday. My colleague sent me back one of my translations she had just proofread. So, I open my laptop with her version on it and go through her comments and changes, editing them in my still unclean version, which I then clean up and give another once-over before finally delivering it to the client.

However, I rarely use two screens while I'm doing the initial translation. Only on those occasions when you need to keep referring to the original screen, for example in some of those annoying fiddly PowerPoint or Excel files we sometimes get, with lots of little text boxes, or images obscuring the text...

Works well for me Oct 16, 2018

I’ve been using two monitors – the bigger the better – for the best part of 20 years. One of the best moves I ever made. Currently have a 17” gaming laptop (very fast) and a widescreen monitor, so I can see my CAT tool, the original file, several websites, etc., all at once. I’d feel lost without that big extra monitor.

Only on rare occasions Oct 16, 2018

As far as I know, people who work with more than one monitor use CAT tools and I don’t. So, usually, one monitor is quite enough for me, but on rare occasions I have used my PC and my laptop side-by-side...

I do now Oct 16, 2018

I currently have two desktop computers side-by-side. (Neither one of them works very well.) I've been using both monitors at the same time, but it's not two monitors on the same computer, which is what I think the question was about.

Three, all the time Oct 16, 2018

I find it very helpful to use three. If I'm using a CAT tool, I have the tool in the middle, the preview on the left and the internet on the right. If I'm not using a CAT tool, I have the source on the left, the target in the middle and the internet on the right. I think it helps me work quicker and saves me from ALT-tabbing.
Now that you can get good USB monitors, I even take two with me when I travel, so that I can work on my laptop in pretty well the same fashion as on the desktop at ho

I use one very large monitor. Occasionally, if I need more, I use my laptop as a second screen, but it is an independent computer.

Otherwise I print out a section of the source text, or a text I am proofreading, after the spelling check and the first run-through, and I work on paper. (This is when I need to make notes - I cannot write in pencil on the screen!!)

I only print out when I need to, and all my paper is recycled or sourced from sustainable forests, used on both sides by me, and sent as 'clean paper' for recycling again.
I think it is more environment-friendly than using an extra monitor + electricity, but my main reason is that it is more comfortable and efficient for me!

I don't use CAT tools but I use two screens. I put the original on the right-hand screen and produce the translation on the left-hand one.

One for the CAT Tool /file to translate, the other to display the source, searching terminology etc .. Increased productivity without compromising quality

Are you multiple-monitor users extremely short-sighted?

I have one bog-standard 23" screen which has plenty of room for Internet on the left, Word on the right.

What more could you need?

(OK, if I need to look at another window I have to take a nanosecond to alt-tab to it.)

I have the source text on one screen, target on the other, to begin with. There will be various research tabs open at the same time, and sometimes related texts.

I don't know what near-sightedness (short sighted) has to do with it. It's just more convenient to use less tabs and be able to look back and forth at a glance. I am in fact near sighted, but that actually makes it harder to see the other screen "over there".

As an interesting OT, I find the difference between the terms "nearsighted" and "shortsighted" across either side of the pond interesting. The term shortsighted is used over here too, but here it means someone who makes impulsive ad hoc decisions without considering the "long view" (future effects / lack of planning).

My desk consists of two kidney shaped desks that fold out from a central axis, so that the screens are at about a 60 degree angle from each other. Very convenient.

I will, but only for some projects Oct 16, 2018

I don't like too large monitors. My setup is so that my main screen is 90 cm away from my nose.

Once I had a chance to try all sizes of monitors up to 21", which I found too large. Too much neck motion. I found that a 19" 4:3 is ideal for me.

I had two spare old CRT monitors stashed away, just in case, respectively 14" and 15". Both working okay. Used them once or twice, while fixing my main one. Got rid of one already, will be donating the other one too, as I got a fla

Got rid of one already, will be donating the other one too, as I got a flat screen 14" which I intend to put to use, as soon as I get the time to tidy up all my wiring here.

I think the second monitor will be useful in projects where I have to frequently query reference materials, online dictionaries etc., as well as some video projects where now and then I have to stop video editing to create some static elements to overlay.

All the time, I wouldn't do without them.
I could even use one more, if it were not for lack of space.
