I also said never, maybe after 70. It is inescapable, inevitable. This profession is inestimable.

Is it ever possible to give up anything you love with all your heart as we love tranlsation? However old we may be, I think: never.
Nikki Graham United Kingdom Local time: 23:28 Spanish to English Workaholics? | Dec 21, 2005 |
Are we workaholics or is it just that we don't have a pension plan organised? Mine won't kick in till I'm 70, but I would no doubt get bored without a translation to think about and discuss... but I am planning to go part-time from 65...

Yes, otherwise what would I do all day? Until either my hands turn too stiff, my brain too muddled or my eyesight too poor... I once read an essay about the "copy editing gene" by Anne Fadiman. She says her father planned to proof-listen if he ever turned blind. She also says that copy editors are the ones who will spot the unusual shell on the beach, or other unusual element of their surroundings, without... See more Yes, otherwise what would I do all day? Aah, after some search - it's "Insert a Carrot" in "Confessions of a Common Reader", and I am sure this is a copyright infringement (so is linking to it legal??): http://www.geocities.com/catha-edulis/humor/carrot.htm Ricki ▲ Collapse
But what about pending work? | Dec 21, 2005 |
I'll have to retire one day, otherwise some poor client is going to be waiting and getting angry with me for not completing a project because he or she has not heard that I've popped my clogs. I voted 65-70, though that is still quite a long way away. And no, I won't get bored. During my youth I have only travelled round Europe. During my retirement, if I'm still fit I hope to travel a bit around the other continents of this world.
Dream Retirement | Dec 21, 2005 |
I retired early from my previous profession for personal reasons. I now live in Valencia, Spain (in the city, not on the costas), where I studied Spanish and worked (voluntarily) in a local hospital to assimilate my English knowledge of my subjects with the Spanish version. Little by little I was asked to translate abstracts and articles for publishing in medical scientific journals. Little by little I was asked to translate abstracts and articles for publishing in medical scientific journals. I now make a reasonable living as it supplements my measly NHS pension after almost 40 years of work. Now most of my ex-colleagues envy me as I work from home, doing a job I love, with (mainly) hours that suit me and can enjoy the more relaxing lifestyle in Spain, just 10 minutes from a large beach on the Mediterranean. I hope that long may it continue. ▲ Collapse
