WFC: Classic -- it is a macro that runs inside MS Word, so you need MS Word installed, and you can basically translate only MS Word files (there are ways to translate Excel, PowerPoint and HTML files also but you need to be highly skilled to do it). What you see in the MS Word file is what you see while you translate it. The way you apply formatting is the same as in MS Word -- simply select text and click a button to format it.

WFP: Pro -- it is a program that runs on any of Windows, Mac and Linux. You can translate many more file types with it. However, in WFP you see only the translatable text, in two columns, and not the MS Word file as it would normally look like in MS Word. The way formatting is applied is through complex codes that you have to copy and paste.

WFA: Anywhere -- it is a web site where you can translate online. The way you translate in WFA looks similar to what it would look like in WFC, but you can translate WFP files as well (as well as any files that WFP can translate). It is free but it is slower.

Here is a simple expanationJan 26, 2012

The main difference between Wordfast -Pro and Wordfast Classic is that the former is a stand-alone program ( stand-alone ) and the latter is composed of a batch of macros which apply to MS - Word. To use the CLASSIC version you need to run MS-WORD on your PC.
Wordfast Classic was founded over 15 years ago while Wordfast - Pro was released for the first time in June 2009.

Therefore, this program represents the most advanced evolution of the Wordfast technology.
Obviously Wordfast - Pro has many more features than its predecessor - Wordfast Classic.
However, even the Classic version can still be interesting in some respects.
The third version, so called wordfast-anywhere is part of a cloud-computing technology, you do not need to download and install anything on your PC, but everything is done ONLINE –it goes without saying that to use this solution you must always be connected online with a good DSL connection.
The first 2 softwares are not free and currently they cost 350.00 euros each, if purchased together (Wordfast-Studio) the total cost is € 500.00.
However, after attending one of our courses, you may have the opportunity to purchase these programs with a 20% off the current price.
Finally, the third software ( Wordfast -Anywhere ) is totally free.
The basic functioning among the three versions is very much alike but each one has got different features to reach more or less the same objective: this means that all of the tree versions are based on a TM (a txt file which contains all your translated sentences) and a GLOSSARY, (a txt file which contains all your terminologies).
I hope this explanation is helping you to understand the basic differences among the 3 different versions.
Do not hesitate to contact me for further help or explanation.

Wordfast Classic must beJan 26, 2012

Sam - Thank you it is as if you were reading my mind when I said simple and systematic this is how I imagined the answer to be. Very Helpful!

Paolo - thank you for the useful information. And it's good to know about the discount. I think that I'll go for Wordfast Classic since I mainly translate Word documents.

But I also get a lot of dead PDFs and JPG documents (scanned obviously). Is there a way to convert those to Word doc. And if there's a way is it worth taken

1. OCR, e.g. ABBYY FineReader.
2. WFA can convert dead PDFs but the conversion is not always good.
3. Hire a typist (much cheaper than typing it yourself).

WFA: Will this be of help to me?Feb 28, 2012

Started using WFA about a year ago. Self taught. Think I've got to grips with most of it though there might still be some aspects I'm missing... Will this course be of help to me? Why?
