Source text - English Here is the famous speech in the Symposium, of Plato, where Socrates’s teacher, Diotima of Mantinea, discourses about the different degrees of perception of beauty. She concludes by describing the highest experience:
“Turning rather towards the main ocean of the beautiful [one] may by contemplation of this bring forth in all their splendor many fair fruits of discourse and meditation in a plenteous crop of philosophy; until with the strength and increase there acquired he descries a certain single knowledge connected with a beauty which has yet to be told.
“And here, I pray you,” said she, “give me the very best of your attention.
“When a man has been thus far tutored in the lore of love, passing from view to view of beautiful things, in the right and regular ascent, suddenly he will have revealed to him . . . a wondrous vision, beautiful in its nature; and this, Socrates, is the final object of all those previous toils.
“First of all, it is ever-existent and neither comes to be nor perishes, neither waxes nor wanes; next, it is not beautiful in part and in part ugly, nor is it such at such a time and other at another, nor in one respect beautiful and in another ugly, nor so affected by position as to seem beautiful to some and ugly to others.
“Nor again will our initiate find the beautiful presented to him in the guise of a face or of hands or any other portion of the body, nor as a particular description or piece of knowledge . . . but existing ever in singularity of form independent by itself, while all the multitude of beautiful things partake of it in such wise that, though all of them are coming to be and perishing, it grows neither greater nor less, and is affected by nothing. . . .
“[I]n the end he comes to know the very essence of beauty. In that state of life above all others, my dear Socrates,” said the Mantinean woman, “a man finds it truly worth while to live, as he contemplates essential beauty. . . .
“But tell me, what would happen if one of you had the fortune to look upon essential beauty entire, pure and unalloyed . . . ? What if he could behold the divine beauty itself, in its unique form?
“His contact is not with illusion but with truth. So when he has begotten a true virtue and has reared it up he is destined to win the friendship of Heaven; he, above all men, is immortal.”
Translation - Greek Ιδού η διάσημη ομιλία από το «Συμπόσιο» του Πλάτωνα, όπου η δασκάλα του Σωκράτη, η Διοτίμα από τη Μαντινεία, πραγματεύεται σχετικά με τους διαφορετικούς βαθμούς αντίληψης του Κάλλους. Καταλήγει περιγράφοντας την ύψιστη εμπειρία:
«Στρεφόμενος κατά κάποιον τρόπον προς τον κύριο ωκεανό του Κάλλους μπορεί (κάποιος) με την περισυλλογή περί αυτού να παράγει σε όλο τους το μεγαλείο πολλούς ωραίους καρπούς διαλεκτικής και διαλογισμού σε μια άφθονη σοδειά φιλοσοφίας. Έως ότου με τη δύναμη και την αύξηση των αποκτημάτων διακρίνει μια μοναδική γνώση που συνδέεται με ένα κάλλος για το οποίο δεν έχουμε μιλήσει ακόμη.
«Και εδώ, σε εκλιπαρώ,» είπε εκείνη, «πρόσεξε με όσο μπορείς καλύτερα.
«Όταν ένας άνθρωπος έχει εκπαιδευτεί τόσο πολύ στην γνώση της αγάπης, έχοντας περάσει από τη μια θεώρηση του ωραίου στην άλλη, με τη σωστή και τακτική άνοδο, ξαφνικά θα έχει αποκαλύψει στον εαυτό του . . . ένα θαυμάσιο όραμα, όμορφο στη φύση του, και αυτό, Σωκράτη, είναι ο τελικός αντικειμενικός σκοπός όλου του προηγούμενου μόχθου.
«Κατ’ αρχήν, υπάρχει για πάντα και ούτε έρχεται στην ύπαρξη μήτε αφανίζεται, ούτε γεμίζει μήτε αδειάζει. Ακόμη, δεν είναι ωραίο σε κάποια μέρη και άσχημο σε κάποια άλλα, ούτε είναι έτσι κάποιες στιγμές και διαφορετικό σε άλλες μήτε ωραίο από μια άποψη και άσχημο από μια άλλη, ούτε επηρεάζεται τόσο από τη θέση ώστε να φαίνεται ωραίο σε κάποιους και άσχημο σε άλλους.
«Ούτε ξανά θα βρούμε το ωραίο παρόν στην εμφάνιση του προσώπου κάποιου ή των χεριών ή οποιουδήποτε άλλου μέρους του σώματος, μήτε ως μια συγκεκριμένη περιγραφή κάποιας γνώσης . . . αλλά να υπάρχει παντοτινά στην μοναδικότητα των μορφών ανεξάρτητο από μόνο του, ενώ όλη η ποικιλία των ωραίων πραγμάτων το μοιράζεται με τόση σοφία που, ενώ όλα έρχονται στην ύπαρξη και χάνονται, αυτό ούτε αναπτύσσεται ούτε μικραίνει, και δεν επηρεάζεται από τίποτα . . .
«Στο τέλος φτάνει να γνωρίσει την ίδια την ουσία του Κάλλους. Σε αυτήν την κατάσταση της ζωής πέρα από όλα τα άλλα, αγαπητέ μου Σωκράτη,» είπε η γυναίκα από τη Μαντινεία, «ένας άνθρωπος βρίσκει ότι αληθινά αξίζει να ζει, καθώς προσυλλογίζεται την ουσιαστική ομορφιά . . .
«Όμως πες μου, τι θα συμβεί αν ένας από εσάς είχε την τύχη να κοιτάξει ολόκληρη την ουσιαστική ομορφιά, καθαρή και ανόθευτη . . .; Τι αν μπορούσε να ατενίσει αυτή καθεαυτή την θεϊκή ομορφιά, στην μοναδική της μορφή;
«Η επαφή του δεν θα γίνει με την ψευδαίσθηση αλλά με την αλήθεια. Όταν λοιπόν αυτός θα έχει γεννήσει μια αληθινή αρετή και θα την έχει μεγαλώσει τότε αυτός είναι προορισμένος να κερδίσει τη φιλία των Ουρανών, αυτός, πάνω από όλους τους ανθρώπους, είναι αθάνατος.»

1. Worked with shipping companies (Compania Maritima Katerina and Union Commercial Steamship Company Ltd.) for 4 years.

3. A large accounting firm (MS Accounting Services SA) in Piraeus, Greece, for 13 years. During this period I was accountant and tax consultant for large British Lawyers’ firms including Watson Farley and Williams, Stephenson Harward, Constant & Constant, Holman Fenwik and Willan International LLP.
