Translation - English The concept of a business model is partly self-explanatory. The term’s two different parts evoke the image of a kind of description of business-related activities. A comprehensive review of research on business models, however, has shown that there is a wealth of different definitions and manners in which the concept can be used (Zott, Amit & Massa, 2011). In the article, it is revealed that the concept makes up a new analysis unit which complements a product, business and industry to build a system-approach to explain how a company does business, or more specifically, how value is produced and harnessed by a company within a specific market context. A business model must be able to describe, on a system level, all the factors which are considered to be important to explain how value is produced and harnessed by a company. A business model is based on a number of different assumptions about how the company's resources, activities and its surroundings work. For example, it can be about acting on assumptions about how the company's internal production works, what customers value and how suppliers act.
Within business-economic theory development, the search for the company's and thus the entrepreneurial aspect's essence has been a prevalent problem. The physical and social attributes that are directly visible were early building blocks in a Darwin-like research tradition that sees a company's adaptation of such attributes as being directly crucial for its ability to survive in a competitive market. Based on this, it is talked about finding compliance between the company's internal configuration and its external environment (Andrews, 1971). Research on business models has, to a large extent, been built on this tradition and the business model is usually seen as a way to map a company's internal configuration.
Within business model research, several schools of thought have arisen which can be roughly divided two categories of business model descriptions. The first category relies on a visual representation of the company and the stakeholders that the company interacts with in order to create a visual representation (Demil & Lecocq 2010) of different resources and flows. The focus is not so much on getting the details right, as in a process control analysis, yet is rather to create an overview of e.g. needs, motives, resources, activities and abilities. The second category of business model descriptions exclusively uses a narrative format (Magretta 2002) which means that the business model consists of a story that describes the logic which is considered to be able to explain why a company can create and capture value. Common to both types of business model descriptions is that they must reflect two sides of the business model. The purely commercial logic which justifies its very existence and, secondly, the purely economic side of the business which shows that there is a profit opportunity.
