Source text - English In spite of having been far from the most significant Christian
community in the early days of the new faith, the Church of
Rome succeeded — essentially through its intrinsic relationship with
the Roman Empire — in pushing itself to the fore in both political and
theological influence. Over time, the power wielded by Rome as the
center of Western Christianity became focused on the person of its
bishop and concentrated in his hands. This power only grew when
the seat of the empire moved from Rome to Constantinople, ceding
responsibility for temporal affairs to a body whose remit had hitherto
been limited to the spiritual.
Having become an essentially political institution, whose purpose
mutated into the perpetuation of its own temporal wealth and power
at the expense of fulfilling the commands of Christ, there was a
depressing inevitability to the cronyism, nepotism, and wholesale
corruption that followed. Even at the risk of falling prey to historical
fallacy, one cannot help but be appalled at the extent to which the
cancer of vice riddled the supposed body of Christ on earth. Whilst
there have always been priests who have tended their flocks with
diligence, humility and selflessness, it has, more often than not, sadly
been in spite of the example set by the head of their Church, rather
than because of it. Of course there have been noble and good popes
— Gregory I, Benedict XIV, John XXIII and Francis are just four that
spring to mind — but many more have been grasping and corrupt, as
open to lust, greed, ambition and anger as the rest of us.
It’s only natural that an institution with a 2,000-year history
should have had its fair share of poor leaders and poor decisions. It is
also quite reasonable to suppose that some of the reports we have of
papal misdeeds may be exaggerated or even fabricated: papal detractors
will not always have been acting in good faith. Yet if even only half of
what we are told is true, the list is still damning. Popes have bribed
their way to office, cavorted with prostitutes and married women,
gambled away papal resources, ordered executions, sanctioned acts of
war, sold Church offices, and acted with the grossest immorality when
they should have been exemplars of godliness, honesty, sexual probity,
non-violence and forgiveness. As one historian commented, the
papacy has ‘discredited by its incumbents every high claim asserted for
it.' In short, the stench of hypocrisy is inescapable, and one can only
wonder at the neglect of the gospel commands that allowed such men
to flourish within the Church and be elected to its highest position.
The early Church Fathers and councils never viewed the bishops
of Rome as holding supreme authority over the universal Church. This
idea was rejected by other churches for at least the first 500 years, if
not longer — in the East it still is — and it was very gradually recognized
and then consolidated in the West only with the help of the Roman
emperors.The Bishop of Rome played no part whatsoever in the early
Church councils that defined basic Christian doctrine, and the 6th
century pope, Gregory I, rejected the idea of papal primacy, stating
that such a view came from the anti-Christ. The historical record is
extremely clear that the concept was developed retroactively, not one
that existed ab initio, as the Church would have us believe.
Far from their elections being guided by the Holy Spirit, many
popes were elected with the help of emperors, kings, and clans of
Rome through bribery, threats and violence. The popes were then
manipulated to act in accordance with their masters’ political
objectives and territorial interests. Even Pope Benedict XVI prior
to being elected in 2005 claimed that ‘There are too many contrary

instances of popes the Holy Spirit obviously would not have picked.’
When the kings and emperors were unable to bring their influence to
bear, the popes’ actions were regularly dictated by politics and by their
own interests as opposed to the spiritual well-being of their flocks,
and popes were never afraid to use every weapon in their armory to
further these interests, from offering crusading privileges for their
allies to hurling excommunications at their enemies.
Popes condemned all the great declarations whose aims were to
prevent bloodshed and advance modernity, from the Magna Carta
and Peace of Augsburg through to the Peace of Westphalia and the
Declaration of the Rights of Man. Rather than leading to peace and
unity, papal claims to supreme authority and complete possession of
the truth have repeatedly led to dissension and schism.
When faced with this litany of failures, Catholic apologists come
up with a plethora of excuses. Their first line of defence is that the
popes are human beings who have been given free will by God. As
such, they don’t expect popes to be perfect, although interestingly,
in this instance they are ready to admit the more human side of the
popes. They argue for a differentiation between the person and his
office — that is, the office remains sacred even when its incumbents
are not — and claim that Christ, the real minister, can act through the
human instrument, however weak or imperfect. It is the faith of the
recipient that matters, they claim, not the virtue of the priest. The
priest acts only as the conduit of God’s grace. Some of these apologists
even look on the corrupt popes as a way of proving that the Catholic
Church is divinely inspired: no merely human organization with such
corrupt leaders would ever have lasted two millenia. Furthermore, they
state, the Holy Church is the bride of God and has the Holy Spirit
for her guide. Consequently, there is no danger of her being deceived
or doing or permitting anything contrary to God’s commandments.
Any of these arguments might be worth considering had there
been only one or two popes that had been scoundrels. These men
could be seen as anomalies, outliers, a statistical aberration, a bad
apple in the barrel. But it begins to ring hollow when we see 20,
30, 40 or more popes that have served as the antithesis of Christian
ideals. Bad popes, while perhaps not the rule, were certainly not the
unfortunate exceptions that the Church would have us believe.

Jednak odniósł on sukces, poprzez jego nierozerwalny związek z Imperium Rzymskim, wychodząc na pierwszy plan zarówno pod względem politycznym, jak i teologicznym. Z czasem władza sprawowana przez Rzym, jako centrum zachodniego chrześcijaństwa, skupiła się na osobie biskupa i skoncentrowała się w jego rękach. Siła ta wzrosła, kiedy tylko siedziba imperium została przeniesiona z Rzymu do Konstantynopola, przekazując odpowiedzialność za sprawy doczesne ciału, którego misja była wówczas ograniczona tylko do spraw duchowych.
Kościół stał się instytucją właściwie polityczną, której cel zmienił się w umocnienie własnego bogactwa i mocy, kosztem spełnienia przykazań Chrystusa.
