II am
a freelance medical interpreter and translator with diverse backgrounds and
experiences including a banking industry, an educational field, medicine,
religion, multimedia, etc. Particularly nowadays, as a certified medical
interpreter, I am more focused on translating medical documents including
medical research papers, clinical trial reports and business-related document.

I
was born in South Korea, and I majored in English Language and Literature at
university. I started my career at the international investment banking company
where I had experienced a lot of translation work such as investment deal-related
documents and proposals submitted to the client companies. While I belonged to
the financial company, I studied and completed a course of TESOL (Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages) at graduate school to obtain the
certificate.

Following
more than 10 years at the financial industry, I decided to run my own English
Academy and implemented the plan. At the time, my academy became one of the top-ranking
branches and was honorably inducted into the Hall of Fame in the franchise
headquarter, based on the business results. About three years later, I quit the business and started a new journey. My
church asked me to work at church, so I worked at the multimedia department of
the church for about four years, where I was engaged in handling cameras and audio
equipment, editing, selecting music, taking care of worship screen display, making
worship subtitles in both Korean and English, and even translating lyrics and
sermons into English, etc. Hence, I happened to be familiar with all these
different kinds of areas which were very new to me.

Also,
with interest in the medical field and to challenge myself in a new world, I
studied to be a practical nurse (assistant nurse) and passed the exam after
completing the necessary course for a year. Finally, I got an official license
for it issued by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Republic of Korea. I
worked at clinics for actual practice for a while. Moreover, I also studied on
Tourism at the same time while I was preparing for the assistant nurse exam, in
order to be an English-speaking tourist guide-interpreter certified by the Ministry
of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and finally obtained both licenses of an assistant
nurse and a tourist guide-interpreter in the same period of preparing for both
exams. Then I started to prepare for a medical interpreting examination that
was my next goal, and I passed the primary written test and the final
interpreting performance test consecutively. Finally, I have achieved a
qualification as a Korean-English medical interpreter certified by the Ministry
of Health and Welfare, after having time of immersing myself in intensive
learning of medical subject areas and the related subjects.

Even
though it’s not many years since I started my new career as a freelance
translator, I have many more years of experience doing this while I was working
at different fields, including translations for private clients and companies with
requested big and small projects.

Now
I’m working with several translation agencies, and one of them suggested an
independent consultant contract to me. From the first year as a freelance
translator, I have been preferred by clients for translating their documents in
several cases. And honorably, I was recently awarded Translator of the Year
2021-2022. I think this is the result
that they appreciated my hard work so far. Before starting translation, I
primarily take much time to research the subject matter-related content and
terms for accurate and meticulous translation. It seems to be a reason that I
have become a preferred translator by many clients.

I’m
more than happy to work with a company that can give me more opportunities to
expand my career. To that end, I will do my best as always!
