Source text - English The fast fashion culture in the developed and newly developing world, has drastically altered social trends, the economy, and the environment surrounding this industry. This process has changed history and culture of regions. Fashion is a cultural identifier across the globe; it creates a unique awareness among varying individuals when interacting, engaging, and witnessing people from different regions and ethnicities. It is a means of communication, symbolism, religion, and an aspect of social identity. In simpler terms, clothes are a basic need for humans, but over the years have morphed into one of the largest industries in the world valued at $1.2 trillion with $250 billion coming from the United States (JEC, 2015). This has led to the textile and apparel industry being saturated today with very expensive clothing on one hand, and with cheap, trendy, mass produced items on the other.
As the fashion industry demand increased, American based corporations responded by outsourcing labor to developing nations (Breward, 2003). These locations abroad had the infrastructure to support this level of manufacturing due to cheap labor costs and the manpower to support it. American corporations recognized that outsourcing increased their profit margins, which led them to continually cut costs in a multitude of ways. These profits, though beneficial to shareholders, came at an excessive cost to garment workers and the environment.
Based on this rational and the fact that America is a nation of fast trend setters, the purpose of this thesis is to understand how American fashion has impacted the traditional apparel industry of certain regions of the world. The primary research question being analyzed is how has apparel and culture, which is found through traditional apparel in certain regions of the world, undergone drastic change due to American fast fashion.
This topic is very pertinent because of the threat fast fashion poses, as it destroys the global economy and environment; and thereby, impacts millions over the world.
Translation - Portuguese A cultura da rapidez da moda nos países desenvolvidos e em desenvolvimento alterou drasticamente as tendências sociais, a economia, e o ambiente acerca dessa indústria. Esse processo mudou a história e a cultura das regiões. A moda é um marcador cultural ao redor do mundo; ela cria uma consciência única entre diversos indivíduos ao interagirem, envolverem-se e observarem povos de regiões e etnias diferentes. Ela é um meio de comunicação, simbolismo, religião e uma expressão de identidade social. Em outros termos, o vestuário é uma necessidade básica para os seres humanos, mas tonou-se, ao longo dos anos, uma das maiores indústrias do mundo, no valor estimado de 1.2 trilhões de dólares sendo 250 bilhões provenientes dos Estados Unidos (JEC, 2015). Isso acarretou a saturação atual da indústria têxtil e de vestuário com roupas caríssimas por um lado e itens muito baratos, na moda do momento, produzidos em massa, por outro lado.
À medida que a demanda da indústria da moda foi aumentando, as empresas norte-americanas reagiram terceirizando o trabalho nos países em desenvolvimento (Breward, 2003). Esses locais no exterior apresentavam a infraestrutura necessária para acomodar esse nível de fabricação em função dos baixos custos trabalhistas e da mão-de-obra para a sua realização. As corporações estado-unidenses perceberam que a terceirização aumentava suas margens de lucro, levando-as a reduzirem suas despesas cada vez mais e de várias maneiras. Esses lucros, ainda que favoráveis aos acionistas, custaram muito caro para os trabalhadores das confecções e para o meio ambiente.
Com base nesse raciocínio e no fato de que os Estados Unidos são uma nação de lançadores de moda efêmera, o objetivo desta tese é compreender o impacto da moda norte-americana na indústria tradicional de vestuário em certas regiões do mundo. A primeira questão da pesquisa a ser analisada é como o vestuário e a cultura, que é encontrada na vestimenta tradicional em certas regiões do mundo, passou por mudanças drásticas em função da brevidade da moda americana. Sendo assim, esse assunto é muito pertinente uma vez que a velocidade de mudança da moda constitui uma ameaça, visto que não apenas destrói a economia global e o meio ambiente, mas também afeta milhões de pessoas ao redor do mundo.
