Source text - English TECHNOLOGY AND MORAL CONFUSION
It is surprising how many contemporary moral crises are aggravated by recent technological developments in science and medicine. Moral questions arise frequently regarding prenatal diagnosis and abortion, euthanasia and therapeutic obstinacy, gene therapy, environmental ethics, animal rights and industrial stockbreeding, just war and the use of nuclear weapons, and the list goes on. The gap between rapid technological growth and slower ethical reflection on the consequences of that growth is startling. In the sciences the human being is often viewed simply as an animal. The stark, modern dogma of scientific naturalism often prevails in our high-tech world, where morality is reduced to the practical and expedient.
American philosopher Francis Fukuyama recognizes the challenge of the current biotechnological revolution. Biotechnology improves human quality of life, but it may also be used unwisely in the hands of those wielding its powers. The same technology that grants freedom may also take it away by creating a new elitism. According to Fukuyama the unequal division of talents now determined by genetic fate may eventually become determined by human decision. Instead, human rights should be determined by human nature, that is, by species-specific structures and capacities. Contra John Locke, the human being is no tabula rasa but possesses innate ideas or species-specific forms of cognition and emotional reaction. Morality does not begin with acquired behavior but is rooted in human nature itself.

To lead is to struggle. In a world such as ours, in history as we know it, to choose the path of leadership is to be on a collision course with conflict.
Why? The reason is quite clear. Leadership always involves change, moving people from one point to another, from the old way of doing things to the new, from the security in the past to the insecurity in the future. Within us there is a built-in resistance to change which seems to threaten our stability and challenge our power. Even if our current situation is unhappy, we still dig in our feet. …
The degree of resistance depends on how critical the change is. Crisis is a word which comes from the Greek krisis. It implies a separating or dividing. Every crisis brings about a polarization and reveals what is truly inside people. During the First World War, a munitions ship blew up in the harbor in Halifax, Canada, causing terrible devastation. Much of the city was knocked flat, and thousands were killed or injured. That crisis brought out the best and the worst in people. One man with half his face blasted refused treatment in order to rescue those who were buried under the rubble. But others prowled the wreckage, stealing rings and money from the corpses.
Since leadership involves change, and change precipitates crisis, a leader must expect that there will be those who resist as well as those who follow. “One could argue,” writes John W. Gardner, “that willingness to engage in battle when necessary is a sine qua non of leadership.”

Jahrhundert zur ersten technischen Revolution, bei der manuelle Arbeitskraft durch technische Hilfsmittel – energieverarbeitende Maschinen – weitgehend ersetzt wurde. Desgleichen haben die Erkenntnisse zum Wesen der Information in unserer Zeit die zweite technische Revolution ausgelöst, bei der geistige menschliche Arbeitskraft durch technische Hilfsmittel – datenverarbeitende Maschinen – eingespart wird. Der Begriff „Information“ ist nicht nur ein Zentralbegriff für die Informationstheorie und Nachrichtentechnik, sondern er ist darüber hinaus eine fundamentale Grundgröße vieler Wissenschaften, wie z. B. Kybernetik, Linguistik, Biologie, Geschichte, Theologie. Er ist darum zu Recht als der dritte Fundamentalbegriff neben Materie und Energie anzusehen.
Claude Edwood Shannon (1917-2001) hat als erster versucht, den Informationsbegriff mathematisch zu definieren. Die so begründete Informationstheorie erbrachte den Vorteil, verschiedene Verfahren der Nachrichtenübertragung miteinander vergleichen zu können und die Grenzen ihrer Leistungsfähigkeit aufzuzeigen. In Mesopotamia, archaeologists discovered items with features which at first glance appeared to be merely piles of earth situated in unlikely locations. Viewed from the air, however, the items appeared in a larger context, and significant details could be discerned which were not readily discernible from the ground. From the air it was apparent that what at first appearance seemed just piles of earth were, in fact, the remains of man-made objects. Upon further examination of these objects, it was discovered that they were the remains of edifices known as ziggurats. Ziggurats were pyramid-like structures built at about the same time as were the Egyptian pyramids. Ziggurats were carefully constructed, carefully engineered, and of high quality. It is now known that they were used for religious purposes and also were associated with astrology. Inscriptions and other evidence show the astrological significance of the ziggurats. Apparently the peoples associated with them worshipped the sun, moon, planets, and stars.
