In our day, those found in dishonesty aren't put to death, but something within them dies. Conscience chokes, character withers, self-respect vanishes, integrity dies. How cheaply some men and women sell their good names!
The year my schoolmates and I enrolled in junior high, the building could not accommodate all of the students, and it was determined that our seventh-grade class would be sent back to our old grade school.
We were insulted. We were furious. We'd spent six years in that grade-school building, and we were ready to move on. We were above going to school one more year with the younger grades. We felt we deserved something better. As a result of this perceived insult, we boys of the class all met after school. We decided that we wouldn't tolerate this kind of treatment and that we should show our displeasure by going on strike.
The next day, we did not show up for school. But we had no place to go. We couldn't stay home because our mothers would ask questions. We didn't think of going downtown to a show because we had no money for that. We didn't think of going to the park where we might be seen by the truant officer. We didn't think of going out behind the school fence and telling shady stories because, to be honest, we didn't know any. We had never heard of such things as drugs or anything of that kind. So we just wandered about and wasted the day.

В том году, когда мы с одноклассниками перешли в старшие классы, в корпусе для старших учеников не всем хватило места, и было решено, что наш седьмой класс отправят обратно в здание к младшим школьникам.
Мы посчитали это унизительным и пребывали в ярости. Ведь мы целых шесть лет проучились в этой начальной школе и уже приготовились двигаться дальше. Наша гордость не позволяла нам еще год провести в обществе учеников младших классов. Мы считали, что заслуживали лучшего. Расценив это как оскорбление, все мальчишки класса собрались вместе после уроков. Не желая мириться с подобным обращением, мы решили выразить свое недовольство забастовкой.
На следующий день мы не пошли в школу, но и других альтернатив у нас не было. Оставаться дома нельзя, поскольку мать начнет задавать вопросы. Сходить в город на представление мы тоже не могли, так как у нас не было денег. В парк мы тоже не пошли, потому что там нас мог увидеть инспектор по делам несовершеннолетних. Даже стоять за школьным забором, рассказывая друг другу сомнительные истории, не имело смыла. По правде говоря, мы и историй-то таких не знали. Мы никогда не слышали о наркотиках или чем-то подобном. Поэтому мы просто слонялись, убивая время.
