Source text - English European legislation on the labelling of perfume ingredients in consumer products is changing. New legislation covering both cosmetics and detergents was established in 2005 that requires 26 perfume ingredients to be named on the product label whenever they are present in concentrations equal to or above 0.01 per cent (100 parts per million) for detergent and rinse-off cosmetics or 0.001 per cent for leave-on cosmetics. Previously, only the word ‘perfume’ needed to be included.
The 26 ingredients are fairly commonly used in combination with other fragrance ingredients to create fragrances which are used to modify base odours of consumer products and provide a better experience for the consumer. The legislation followed concern expressed by a group of dermatological experts about the potential allergic effects of these ingredients, and there has been, in one of the member states, a fair amount of media coverage and investigation by a consumer group both before and after the legislation was enacted.

A native speaker of Russian, I was born in the heart of Russia, in a city renowned for its literary heritage. After graduating from a local university in 1998 with an MA-level qualification in English and a ‘Distinction’ for the final dissertation I relocated to the UK where I have lived for a number of years in the southern county of Dorset.
My experience in the language practice is diverse covering feature writing for a Russian radio station, work with asylum seekers, news translation for e-media and a trade magazine as well as translation and interpreting work for courts and social services.
Since late 2004 I have worked for an international human rights organisation as a translator and translation reviser.
My recent translation and editing projects (in the last three years) include several non-fiction books and other large publications.
I hold full membership of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (UK) - a leading organisation for language professionals.
As a practising linguist I believe in creative and open-minded approach to translation, that is communicating your message and ideas, not merely replacing words, and writing with the reader in mind. Thus, my ultimate goal both as a translator and a reviser is to create a perfectly translated text that flows as smoothly as any writing in the target language, and never to raise your readers' suspicions that what they see is in fact a translation.
