Speaker details

Bio:I am a Spanish and German translator and master-level court-certified Spanish interpreter with an international background and 12 years' translation experience. I am an adjunct professor at the University of California San Diego's online certificate for English/Spanish translation.

I live and work in Las Vegas, Nevada, where I run a small business, Twin Translations. I am the immediate past president of the Nevada Interpreters and Translators Association (NITA) and currently chair the association's professional development committee. I am a voting member of the American Translators Association (ATA). In addition, I write the monthly Entrepreneurial Linguist column for the ATA's Chronicle newsletter and regularly contribute articles on marketing and entrepreneurship to the ITI's Bulletin. I have the pleasure of being a frequent keynote speaker at conferences and workshops around the world, including events in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Ireland, Scotland, etc. Together with my twin sister Dagmar, I published "The Entrepreneurial Linguist: The Business-School Approach to Freelance Translation" in April 2010. It is available at: Lulu, has sold more than 2,500 copies worldwide and is required reading at many universities. Dagmar and I also run the award-winning translation and interpreting blog, Translation Times. For tips and tricks and insight about the world of freelance translation, please visit our translation blog,Translation Times. We also collect translation mistakes, which can be found on our German-language blog Uebersetzungsfehler.

A little bit more about me:

My twin sister and I run our boutique translation and copy writing business, Twin Translations, out of Vegas and Vienna, Austria, enabling us to work for our clients around the clock -- time differences are a beautiful thing. We were born in Austria (think Sound of Music, unfortunately) and grew up in Mexico City, Mexico, where we went to the German School Alexander of Humboldt. Our native languages are both German and Spanish. I earned my undergraduate and graduate degrees from American institutions, while Dagmar has degrees from the University of Salzburg, studied abroad in Tours, France, and has a master's degree in conference interpreting from the University of Vienna. She is an accredited conference interpreter at the institutions of the European Union.

Between my twin sister Dagmar and I we have twenty years' translation experience on both sides of the Atlantic. Our most commonly requested language pairs are German ->English and English->Spanish, but we are delighted to work in any of our combination. Among our happy clients are IBM, Sony, Siemens, Roche Diagnostics, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Red Bull, etc. Besides being a translator, citizen of the world, and identical twin, I am also a Vegas expert, and have reviewed shows and restaurants for a major travel site for many years while running the Spanish-language division of this online travel company. A lot of my translations have been focused on the hospitality industry, but I also have a lot of experience in legal, technical, and IT-related (especially e-commerce) texts.
